PSL Council saves SLW Heart pumping jumping water customers cash Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE WEST — The Service District water customers are going to save some cash, thanks to an pioneering plan the City Council approved at its last regular meeting, Feb. 8. “We came up with a process by which we could use some of the lands at McCarty Ranch for a preservation bank,” Jeff Bremer, city manager, told the commission. Under the deal the council
approved, The St. Lucie West Services District will buy about 6.5 acres of McCarty Ranch from Port St. Lucie. Sort of. The Basin 4E-5 interconnect project, bounded within Cashmere and St. Lucie West boulevards and the Ronald Reagan Turnpike, will scratch almost four acres of upland pine land. City rules require that the district find about one and half times that amount of upland pine to designate as preserve area. The district simply doesn’t

TRADITION — John Textor, most well-known for helming Digital Domain Studios, is enjoying a comeback, it seems. His new animation house, Pulse Evolution Corporation, has announced a partnership that will infuse $10 million into the company, which produces hyper-realistic digital humans for movie special effects, virtual reality applications and artificial

According to Textor, the investment is an endorsement of his company’s abilities. “We are excited to have further validation of our technology from Shanghai U9 Game and its CEO Liang Liu. Digital

“I thanked God for bringing me to that Miracle Man, Joe Mutter.”
Joe Mutter and his Niece patient care coordinator Tammy Shearer-Carpenter
Carmela Buhrman knows a miracle when she hears one. And the 88 year-old heard one loud and clear after more than 20 years of suffering from profound industrial deafness. Buhrman had tried several hearing aids costing several thousands of dollars, but when she met Joe Mutter and tried her hearing aids for the first time, the whole world changed. “I fell down on my knees and thanked God for bringing me to that miracle man, Joe Mutter,” she said. “You would too, if suddenly you were able to hear sounds you hadn’t heard in over twenty years. I was missing out on so much.” “What a gift I have been given. The whole world opened up for me,” said Buhrman. “From the moment I walked into his office, Joe was gracious and approachable. He takes pride in his work and wants to make sure you are happy. Thanks to Joe Mutter, you can turn your back on me and I can still hear you,” she boasted. Thank you so much Joe! Carmela Buhrman ST. TREASURE COAST — Leonard Villafranco has entered a now four-man race to fill the position F. Shields McManus is vacating. “It’s time to do it,” Villafranco said. “I’ve been (practicing law) for a long time.” The election is for the state’s 19th Judicial Circuit Group 6. The elections are non-partisan, and judicial candidates cannot discuss how they might rule in particular cases, or even in hypothetical ones. That’s to ensure judicial impartiality to future litigants. “No, we cannot talk about specific issues,” Villafranco said. “Our job as a judge is to apply the law based on the facts as presented.” What they can discuss is their experience and general motives about what they’d like to do to improve the court system. Villafranco said experience is something he likes talking about. “I’m a litigation attorney,” he said. “I’m always in the courtroom.” However, Villafranco started his career life not in courtrooms, but in classrooms. Back in the ‘80s, he got a degree in education and taught in junior high and high schools in New York. Then he headed into the printing, publishing and advertising business, including working for South Florida’s Franklin Press. Courtrooms, however, were in his thoughts the whole time. “I’ve always enjoyed the law,” Villafranco said. So he started classes at Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad Law Center in 2001. He graduated in 2004, and was quickly involved in efforts to reduce the cost of justice. However, Villafranco said, while he favors reforms to make law more affordable, he
believes law should work to resolve issues and amend wrongs. “I’ve settled cases in excess of a million dollars,” he said. If elected, Villafranco said he’d like to find ways to speed cases to avoid having lines of lawyers charging clients for waiting in courtrooms. “Courts are extremely backlogged and there have to be ways to streamline that,” he said. “It’s not fair to the litigants and it’s not fair to the courts.” Leonard Villafranco Florida Rural Legal Services and Florida Supreme Court Pro Bono Services Coordination have awarded Villafranco for his work representing folks without charge. He’s been the vice president and president of the Port St. Lucie Bar Association. He’s also a board member of Mothers and Infants Striving for Success, among other efforts to improve life on the Treasure Coast for everyone. He sees running for the judicial seat as part of building a better world. “This is my community,” Villafranco said. “The community has been good to me, and I want to give back.” Additionally, he said, “I think I’m ready to (become a circuit court judge). I think I have the experience and temperament for it.” In addition to Villafranco, Michael McNicholas, Robert Meadows and Chet Weinbaum are running for the seat. To learn more about Villafranco, visit www.villafranco4judge.com. His campaign has a Facebook page, too.

City University goes to Parks & Rec mecca
T
his week at the Port St. Lucie City University class we went on our first adventure out of a classroom environment to the Port St. Lucie Civic Center with Parks and Recreation as the topic of this week’s syllabus. Anytime I hear from someone who is looking for someplace to relocate, these are often their top two concerns; (if they are a young family with children), how are the schools, what are the parks like and what are the programs they offer? Let me just dispel the old wives’ tale that Parks & Rec is just for kids. With numerous outlets such as (and I won’t be laundry listing them all) the adult softball league, golf at the city-owned Saints Golf Course, senior fitness, yoga, Zumba and the Humana Fitness & Wellness Center (a fully equipped workout facility) at the Civic Center, there is no reason anybody should be sitting around bored. First, by a show of hands, how many of you have actually ventured eastward to the Civic Center facility on U.S. 1? The Parks & Recreation mecca is just one avenue of what
is offered throughout the city. Erin Murphy, rec supervisor, spoke of the numbers of participation. Of the 118 programs, there were more than Mitch Kloorfain 7,000 participants. City Council member Michelle Berger took the time to join the class to share how the parks department is interwoven with her family as they grew up here in the city. While the Civic Center is the pinnacle of this division with 40 staff members, it is the Saints Golf Course that offers a great opportunity for those who don’t have access to that country club avenue. While there is an argument that city-owned golf courses should be sold or privatized, this city has made a huge (and much needed) renovation of the golf course, and now takes in 56,000 rounds a year.

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Jenny Newell, Port St. Lucie public information officer switches roles with City University class member, Phil Malhoyt during an exercise demonstrating how the city shares information to the various media outlets. If I was a betting person when asked how many volunteers I thought the city had in parks & rec, I’d have been a big loser by under-guessing. The list of volunteers has grown to 300 in various roles through-
out the 40 city park properties and the 900 acres they cover. We ventured next to Human Resources with Natalie Cabrera speaking of how 7.5 employees
live without COLAs in 2016, he didn’t try to stop it either. Allen West wrote about this last October. The excuse used was cheaper gasoline. If your retired, you don’t drive much, so I fail to understand the connection, but if we don’t fight it, next year it could be another excuse. I decided to write a petition to the White House, and will need 100 thousand signatures for it to get any attention, see link and please sign: https://petitions. whitehouse. gov//petition/ president-saidno-cola-seniors2016-because-cost-gasoline-down-drug-companies-aretaking-anything-save/. Didn’t the people involved figure out when they used the Gasoline excuse, other companies would fill in the hole, and charge higher prices? The drug companies are going after that money because we don’t pay $3 to $4 bucks a gallon for gas, so they raised drug
prices 300 to 400 percent with a few of my drugs. I re-filled two prescriptions, last year they were $3 each co-pay a month, it’s $11.46 this year, a 380 percent increase, when I called my drug plan they said: oh yeah...we raised them from a tier one to a tier two. I said that’s not very nice when one considers I already pay a hefty premium per month for this plan. Seniors are getting choked, especially if Social Security is your only income, it seems they can’t figure. Are you getting sick because of this? Some companies will assume there’s extra money in retiree’s pockets even if there isn’t, Social Security Cola’s are needed every year, and doing away with it isn’t fair!

have enough land to set aside to cover that, so it has to buy some. Dennis Pickle, manager and utilities director, said in an interview after the meeting the district looked around at some qualifying land to purchase and put into a mitigation bank. It had kicked some proverbial tires and got sticker shock. “We would not have been able to do this project — it would have driven the cost up $700,000, $800000 higher,” he said. However, the district also has to do something with storm water. “If we had to bond (the project), everybody would have had to pay for the special assessment to pay for the bonds,” he said. In other words, the service district customers would have been paying additional fees on their property tax bills. That’s something that didn’t sit well with Mayor Greg Oravec. “St Lucie West residents pay (fees) to not only us, but to the St. Lucie West Services District,” he said at the meeting before voting to approve the deal. Under the McCarty Ranch arrangement, the district is purchasing the acres to satisfy its mitigation responsibilities for about $201,000, Pickle said. The project will add drainage from around the intersection of
Cashmere and St. Lucie West boulevards. “The storm-water model we ran on it, it would give us about two and a half to three inches of additional capacity during a 100-year storm event,” he said in a previous interview. That can become dramatically important during hurricanes particularly. After a large storm, many have to get supplies from Home Depot and Lowes. Both are at that intersection. Additionally, there’s a Walmart Supercenter on St. Lucie West Boulevard, and there are soon going to be three grocery stores: Aldi, Publix and a Walmart Neighborhood Market will soon open. Two are going to be at the intersection: Aldi and Walmart. Pickle said the land deal helped the entire city, not just St. Lucie West. “It benefited everyone in the district, but also the people who come and shop in the district,” he said. “If you can’t get the water off the streets, you can’t shop over there.” In addition to the land-purchase and design costs, the project will run about $450,000. The district and the selected contractor are working out the final design and construction times. “This has been about a year and a half, two years, talking to the city about an innovative way to get this done,” Pickle said.
The worst time to make these decisions, is the day you need to. Be prepared, protect your family

The investment is part of a strategy that poises both U9 gaming and Original Force to have first dibs on Pulse’s human animation software — programming that creates digitally animated humans that are indistinguishable from live-action actors. Through the two companies, Pulse’s technology will be deployed in the gaming and motion-picture industries. Pulse exploded onto the scene during the 2012 Coachella Valley Music Festival, when a digitally projected Tupac Shakur made his posthumous debut. In 2014, Pulse created a digital Michael Jackson as an anchor performance at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. Since then, Pulse has secured the rights to the digital likenesses of Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe, and recently announced the launch of a digitally rendered Elvis Presley concert tour. It was these milestones which attracted the Chinese investment. “Original Force has always aspired to the highest ideals of rich storytelling and stunning visual imagery, in our films and

The people of Pulse represent the greatest traditions of computer animation and their new company has quickly become the gold standard of human animation,” Original Force founder and president Harley Zhao said in a statement. U9 Gaming reps also applauded Pulse’s work, saying that the choice for them to invest comes from the need to make digital animation more authentic. “As the convergence of film, games and live performance continues, it is critical that we are able to deliver the most visually stunning, believable and engaging human characters into the increasingly digital domain,” said company CEO Liang Liu. Pulse has certainly delivered. The 2014 Michael Jackson performance and Coachella Tupac Shakur event may be just the beginning. Pulse and its new investors see digital human animation as an emerging entertainment platform with applications in marketing, medical study, concert entertainment and personalized gaming. In the near future, characters in the gaming world may be lifelike avatars of the player. According to the company, “Future digital humans will provide a relatable human interface for

Morningside Branch Supervisor Maureen Gallagher said the whole project for celebrating Treasure Coast authors began as an idea from Library Administration. “Library Systems Manager Susan Jacob felt there was a lot of talent in the Treasure Coast area,” Gallagher said. “And instead of having a one-time book signing, or book talk, she felt it might be beneficial to bring all of them together, at one time. Gallagher said that last year’s event was tremendously successful, with around 150 patrons who’ve expressed very positive feedback. Tradition resident and published author, Erik P. He’s penned several books including his self-published post-Civil War novel “Common Threads.” . “I hope to gain an audience,” he said. “But more than that, I hope to encourage others to write if I can.” An entertainment writer attending the Fair is R.J. Blacks, a retired engineer who’s looking to write now that he has time to himself. His first book “Alligator Park,” has received several 5-star reviews on Amazon.com. ST. LUCIE WEST — What do 38,000 pounds of bell peppers, Rolex watches, and the Bahamian tourism industry have in common? One St. Lucie West resident named Joseph Rieger. A self-made entrepreneur since age 17, Rieger and his wife have operated businesses for more than 30 years all over Florida and Tennessee. His numerous enterprises can be characterized by a focus on quality, loyalty, curiosity, and local responsibility. Florida Organic Farms International is his latest venture: a 396acre, USDA-certified organic farm in Okeechobee. Last month, the farm donated 30 pallets of red bell
peppers to House of Hope in Stuart. After a spate of storms curtailed this season’s distribution, he was faced with a surplus of thousands of the peppers. Instead of selling them off locally, as many business owners might do, he decided he’d once again give back to the community. “If you’re fortunate to have the things you have,” he says, “even though you work as hard for them, you’ve also got to reach out and help others.” Last year, he donated several tractor-trailers of green bell peppers to House of Hope, the result of the trials that first-year farms conduct to demonstrate their product. His emphasis on local support, as well as his insistence on quality, are in large part the result of his

AUTHORS from page A11 tery, action, science and murder, it’s been described as a “rather remarkable book” and a “real page-turner.” “I’m hoping to connect with some new readers,” Blacks said. St. Lucie County resident and Mariposa Elementary School teacher, Janet Balletta, who participated at last year’s event, will be talking about her children’s book, “The Legend of a Colombian Mermaid” at the Morningside Branch. Her book recently won the Mariposa Award from the International Latino Book Society. The book is a retelling of a folk tale her mother told her as a bedtime story, where a young girl is transformed into a mermaid after disobeying her parents and goes swimming on Good Friday. Baletta’s book has been translated into Spanish as she promotes bi-lingual literacy. “I think our school district would greatly benefit from a dual language program,” she said. The Fort Pierce Branch will be hosting the Caras Family, Joanne, and her husband, Harvey. Joanne Caras is the author of the “Holocaust Survivor Cookbook,” and its second volume, “Miracles and Meals,” plus the host of her own nationally syndicated TV show “Meals and Miracles,”
presented on JLTV (Jewish Life Television) in St. Lucie County. Caras, along with her husband and children, developed, photographed and wrote a cookbook that includes not just recipes, but stories of Holocaust survivors, which she said you could ultimately tell and pass on as you prepare their family recipes. “The survivors become less and less in numbers, as the years go on,” she said. “I feel this is a beautiful way for us to remember the resilience of people who had the strength go on, as well as preserving the fact that this really did happen.” The books are sold all over the world, and the proceeds from each edition are donated to the Carmei Ha’ir Kitchen, in Jerusalem, to help feed hungry Israelis. To date the books have generated $1 million for charity. “While I’ve spoken in more than 300 cities from Israel to Australia, Canada and all over the U.S., to get an opportunity to speak in my own neighborhood is absolutely fabulous,” she said. Library Systems Production Coordinator Sheila Small said what’s unique about this year, is the expansion of accepting authors from neighboring counties. “This year we decided we would make the event open to a

upbringing, he says. His parents ran an international antiquity business when Rieger was a child, and he and his brother received the sort of education one doesn’t learn from books, travelling around the world and helping with antique shows as he grew older. “I always circle back and give my folks the highest of credit,” he says. “When we were growing up that way, we were exposed to all walks of life, different types of people, cultures, and attitudes. I think the biggest success we could ever have is from that education.” When Rieger was 8 years old, his mother Terry, the remarkable artisan behind Diamonds for Terry in Stuart, taught him how to carve wax for jewelry and cast. In 1986, when he was still just a teenager, Rieger founded his first jewelry business in Kendall, called Giovanni Fine Jewelry. Nine years later, he started Swiss Pre-Owned Inc. (SPO), a company that deals in high-grade refurbished watches. At that time, he says, previously owned reworked time pieces weren’t being done, and his company helped create that secondary market. The fascination with watches was formed when Rieger began studying the crime of counterfeiting. After a short while, he became so adept at identifying a watch’s authenticity,
he was sought after by dealers to guarantee their products. SPO, still in operation today, wholesales refurbished Rolex style watches to mom-and-pop stores all over the country, allowing them to compete in the industry. Rieger’s entrepreneurial curiosity and drive did not stop there, however. In 1998, when Rieger was living in Tennessee, he built an add-on to his home and discovered a hitherto untapped talent. Once word got out about his annex, all manners of professionals were lining up to ask him to build for them. That’s when it occurred to Rieger to found Excel Building and Development Corps. Rieger says without a doubt his experience with manufacturing jewelry directly influenced his burgeoning architectural design: “When I got into the development business, the guys who used to work for me would hate it, because I’d come to a job site, look at a door, and see that it was crooked by an 8th (of an inch). I’d tell them, ‘Take the door off. It’s crooked.’ They’d ask, ‘How can you see an 8th, Mr. Rieger?’ When you set tiny one-point diamonds, you can see an 8th across the room.” With all of his companies, Rieger strives for high-quality and artisanship. “I am a big advocate of giving the customers the highest

ORGANIC from page A14 quality, even if it means making less money,” he says. “That’s not normal in most businesses. People want to make the most they can, but I’ve always been a believer that I’ve been successful because of doing it the right way.” His jewelry and watch businesses specialize in unique items, made entirely by hand, and custom-designed — one-of-a-kind heirlooms that could be passed down through generations. Extending this model to his other businesses has served him well. While much of the real estate world felt the sting of the 2008 subprime mortgage collapse, Rieger survived by developing custom-made, highend rentals or buying up houses and making them “like no other property in the community. We gave people more for their money, instead of just a mop and glow, trying to sell it to the next buyer.” Humility and charity are at the core of Rieger’s business philos-
ophy. He fondly remembers an adage his grandfather used to tell him: “You never look down on a man, unless you’re putting your hand out to lift him off the ground.” Keeping this credo close to heart, Rieger has contributed to both local and national communities across the nation. He has worked with FEMA to rebuild the homes of hurricane and tornado victims in Texas, Tennessee, and Virginia. He has also donated to a whole rank of charities in the Treasure Coast, from the Stuart Sailfish Club to the Bulls for Brooke fishing tournament. The number of national charities he and his wife support is beyond count. Rieger also pays special attention to his staff. In 1988, while running his jewelry business out of St. Petersburg, he founded a school of 150 aspiring craftsmen. He often gave his students hiring priority, and he has helped many of his past collaborators achieve suc-

TREASURE COAST — Tradition’s Al Soricelli is a runner whose times tell of a man in exceptional shape for his 52 years. “About three, almost four years ago, I was 60 pounds — that’s a six and a zero — heavier,” he said. And on a medical ledge, about to find himself on a daily diet of medications to slow him from falling from it. Today, Soricelli is organizing the kick-off event at the upcoming Marathon of the Treasure Coast, the Care Net for Life 5K, March 5. The marathon events are the middle of a four-week fitness trifecta that’s raising money for local charities, and proving many athletes’ mettle. On Sunday, Feb. 21, the Chasing Caterpillars Triathlon launches the local exercise endurance episode that’ll culminate in the fifth annual Riding for

Inspired by Nature 2016 is an important year for the creative journey of Terry Rieger of Diamonds By Terry. Many
of her new designs are inspired by the sky, the earth, insects, sea life and flowers. The fact that Terry is not only a jewelry designer but a painter and sculptor as well as a chef, gives a unique twist in the background story of how certain collections are born and created. This incorporates a clear connection with pictorial and artistic elements. Cooking & Cake Sculpture, painting and jewelry, all have a common denominator, the inspiration that Terry draws from nature. This Italian artist has always taken from and captured the atmosphere of her muse, Nature, always with huge focus on stones and the color & quality of the gold Her designs’ originality stands out thanks to the uniqueness of her collections. Terry is always dedicated to the women searching for jewelry to wear at all times, day or night.. and exactly what a man would think was a perfect design for him. Simple forms but full of character. Designs that never stop looking like a piece that is unquestionably Terry. As she always says, “standards aren’t just set, they’re born & cultivated from something with meaning, with a story of a treasured experience or a rich history”.

MARATHON from page A16 Heroes bicycle ride on March 20. The triathlon is happening at Sailfish Splash Waterpark, Stuart. Among the racers is Tradition’s Chris Bertorelli, who’s always game for a triathlon. The Marine Corps Force Recon veteran is a triathlon coach. “For me, it’s because of the charity they give to,” he said. That charity is the Treasure Coast Down Syndrome Awareness Group. Bertorelli’s niece, Roma Comfort, has the pervasive developmental disorder. He said she teaches him about courage and tenacity needed to be a Marine and triathlete. “People say, ‘You’re a Marine’ — they say, ‘You’re tough,’” Bertorelli told Your Voice News & Views last year. “They say, ‘You were Recon; you’re tough.’ These kids have challenges, physical challenges and developmental challenges, every day of their lives and they go through it with smiles.” Some of those athletes will transition from triathlon to two weeks of intense run training starting the following Monday to get ready for the Marathon of the Treasure Coast, with events in Stuart on March 5 and 6. Some of them will then trade running shoes for road bikes for

two weeks of putting in road time to get ready to ride 105 miles from Palm City west and back for the fifth annual Riding for Heroes, to benefit local veterans charity Justin’s Wings. That’s on March 20, starting from the LCpl Justin Wilson Park. Soricelli said the Care Net 5K has grown rapidly. “We grew it from 40 to 180 registered runners,” he said. “Last year we took it from 180 to 270 registered runners.” Part of that is the organizer’s passion. Soricelli said he’s on a bit of a mission to raise awareness about Care Net Pregnancy Services of the Treasure Coast — a faith-based pregnancy care organization that started in 1989. “Not enough people know about Care Net,” he said. “They have a loving and caring staff that makes you want to help them. What an am amazing organization, and I want to see them continue the work they do.” He’d also like to get more folks caring for their physical and spiritual lives with running. Shortly after Soricelli got bad news about his heart and blood-sugar health, he turned to God for help. God sent health his way in the form of a 5K. “I put this up in prayer, and my

He found a training program, but had to condense it by a third. The program called for a nine-week progression from start to covering the 3.1 miles of a 5K. Soricelli liked what was happening as the miles passed under him. “I was liking the results, losing weight as well as feeling better, and I took it deeper and deeper and deeper,” he said. “(Running) helped me reclaim my fitness, because it was gone. I couldn’t run 100 yards without bending over and begging for mercy.” What’s more, Soricelli found that God was with him on the runs. “I refer to running as my personal (Garden of) Gethsemane,” he said. “Running, especially when I normally run at (5 a.m.), allows me to pray and reflect and cast my cares upon the Lord.” Oh, and those run times mentioned earlier — Soricelli does 8:20 a mile over six miles. To put that in perspective, if a man half Soricelli’s age can do that time over just two miles, he’d pass the Army’s run requirements and then some. The Care Net 5K will launch
from Stuart’s Memorial Park, 300 S.E. Ocean Blvd., at 7 a.m. The fifth annual Riding for Heroes bicycle ride to support The Lance Corporal Justin J. Wilson (US Marine) Memorial Foundation, better known as Justin’s Wings, is next. Wilson, who moved to Palm City shortly before enlisting, died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. After Wilson’s 2010 death, his parents started the foundation that helps military families and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. The ride with 40-, 56-, 80- and 105-mile routes will be taking off from the Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson Memorial Park, 2050 S.W. Mapp Road, Palm City, starting at 7:30 a.m. To find out more about the Care Net 5K, visit www.runforlife5K. com. Meanwhile, the land in Okeechobee became available, and Rieger was very quick to act. The farm had originally been plotted in 2012, but nothing was ever grown on it. Now they produce about 1,000 pounds a week, and they are looking to double up for next season. The farm operates a 7.5acre greenhouse, which will soon be cultivated vertically, yielding about 40 acres of product, helping to ensure a year-round harvest for the farm. Rieger also says that they plan to focus more on inhouse distribution to be able to control better where the crop goes. Discussions are still in the works regarding opening an organic farm in the Bahamas to totally benefit their local economy. “Organics used to be a niche market,” Rieger says, “and the reality is we’re not really driving this market; the consumer is. They want healthy food. They want to feed their children healthy food. The demand has really overcome the supply. It’s nice to see. It’s a bit more costly, and definitely a lot more time-consuming, but it’s do-able.” The motto of Florida Organic Farms International is “Growing for a healthier world.” Rieger says he not only wants to grow for a healthier world, but support it as well, to promote the most important things in life: friends, family, and health. In this latest enterprise, Rieger has shown the same creative, driven, and gracious attitude that is indicative of his business model at large, and clearly he is a persevering testament to the good, dutiful enterprise that has become so forgotten in the 21st century.

cess in their own right. “My lead general contractor, who was with me in Tennessee for 18 years, has since branched off and opened up his own company,” says Rieger. “I helped set him up, and now he is taking on those big jobs and living the life that he didn’t think was ever possible.” The idea for the organic farm came to Rieger when he was touring around agricultural facilities in the Bahamas. In 2012, Rieger, an avid boater, helped turn around a struggling boating resort in Grand Bahama, called Blue Marlin Cove. Originally a complex of 30 condominiums, Rieger helped turn it into an exclusive Windham RCI timeshare resort with 60 hotel suites, an 18-slip dock, a beauty spa, and restaurant. Rieger says that one goal for the resort will be to fall under the management of his 5-year-old daughter when she comes of age. “She’ll have to learn to earn, though. Just like I did,” he says. In the Bahamas, Rieger quickly became friends with Bahama Prime Minister Perry Christie, who took him to a new college they were building in Andros that would focus on hydroponic and aquaponic horticulture. It was amazing to Rieger how much of the Bahamian product was grown on the island, shipped elsewhere, and then sold back to Bahamians. He started looking into organic farming, and commencing discussions with the Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism, and other offices about starting an organic farm in the Bahamas.

UNIVERSITY from page A6 service 980 employees with benefits, wellness, labor relations, payroll, training and maintaining personnel records to name a few. I had never known that the city offered its own health clinic for employees. The clinic treats minor emergencies, strains, sprains, broken bones, lacerations, sports injuries and more, which allows the employees and their families to be treated without having to make a visit to a hospital emergency room. Jenny Tomes was next on the schedule to discuss her role as the public information officer. Tomes is the conduit between information coming from outside agencies or from within the city, that is then disseminated into a press release and shared out through news media and social media to get the word out to the residents. It got interactive when Tomes called upon City University participant Phil Malhoyt to take on her role as PIO while she played a news reporter seeking information about a fictitious accident. There was limited information
that can be released but the reporter, Tomes, in this case, kept needling Malhoyt for more than he knew or was allowed to release. It was truly an exercise in patience. We closed out with Renee Major, director of Risk Management for the city, speaking on topics of protection and prevention for the residents and employees. It was the extensive list of safety training that caught my eye. There were 22 items such as Back Safety, Blood-borne Pathogens, CPR and automated external defibrillator devices, power tools, heat stress, school crossing guards — and like the Parks & Rec list of services, too many to mention in this space. The city has an extensive website at www.cityofPSL. com. I challenge you to go on it and just explore the options in search of something you didn’t know about before you started that the city offers of which you or your family can benefit from. If nothing else, sign yourself up as a volunteer. Three hundred people can’t all be wrong, can they? Reese would pull out his Rolodex and start calling veterans organizations for donations to those folks. The guys at VVA 1041 just didn’t like the thought of hungry veterans waiting for Reese to get a hold of people for help. So, they told him about their idea: a rapid-response fund that he could tap immediately. Reese thought the upstart chapter meant $500, $1,000. After all, it had maybe 70 some members, right? He said getting a $17,500 rapid-response account bowled him over. “It makes my job 10 times easier,” he said. “I don’t have to think how to get (a veteran in need) help. I can

We were able to give (Martin County Veterans Service Office supervisor) Tony Reese a check for $17,500.” Last year the Vietnam Veterans of America’s Chapter 1041 had an idea. What if the Martin County Veterans Service Office supervisor, Reese, had a pot of money to help cash-strapped veterans? Normally Reese fills his days helping veterans file claims and appeals to the Department of Veterans Affairs. But, a few times a month he gets veterans who need things the VA doesn’t offer. ST. LUCIE WEST — Lang Realty is very pleased to congratulate the sales team of Kay Rodriguez and June D’Angelo for being the top sales team in total sales and gross commissions for 2015. Also, in addition to being number one in sales, they lead the office in number of listings as well. For the past 17 years, Kay and June have been the sales leaders in PGA Village, year in and year out. In fact, no one has sold more real estate in PGA Village than Kay and June. “We are extremely proud to recognize Kay and June for their remarkable accomplishments,” said John Falkenhagen, sales manager at Lang Realty. Kay and June work tirelessly to maintain their Top Producing status by networking with their large network of satisfied customers, many of whom they have helped repeatedly with either buying and selling several homes through the years, and now their children are clients as well. A major part of their business comes from referrals, which is a significant part of their business and a very important aspect of the real estate field. Another reason for their continued success, noted Falkenhagen, is their tremendous marketing campaigns, which include continuous mail-outs, full page and front cover pages in the daily newspapers,
Photo courtesy of Lang Realty Kay Rodriguez and June D’Angelo, winners of the Diamond Award, earned more than $20 million in sales. They duo has ranked the top agents in the office for 17 years.
Genny is a dear sweet lady, kind hearted to all; beloved by her 3 children, her 13 grandchildren; her 23 great grandchildren; and legions of friends who love and respect her.

LANG from page A29 Your Voice News & Views, Homes and Land magazine and The Real Estate Book. In addition, they have a significant internet presence, and employ an internet marketing assistant. Another important part of their operation is their longtime licensed assistant Alexis, who helps with their daily work flow. “I am certain their advertising budget surpasses that of any of the other local Realtors in the area,” Falkenhagen said. The Kay and June team have an advantage over most other Realtors in the market because of their unique knowledge of the history of the community and all of the different floor plans and various models available. There are also distinct characteristics to each neighborhood that they are intimately familiar with. Another advantage is that they know the residents, not only as customers, but as neighbors and friends Kay Rodriguez and her husband George, both avid golfers, moved to PGA Village from Sailfish Point in 1999 after buying a home through long-time resident and successful Realtor June D’Angelo. Soon thereafter, a partnership was formed, and within a short period of time they began setting
sales records — and the rest is history. Legend has it that nearly every home in PGA Village has probably been sold at one time or another by Kay or June. The dynamic duo earned the Diamond Award for over $20 million in sales and they have both been the number one agent in the office for 17 years. “Our goal is to be your ‘go-to’ professionals for everything related to our community,” Falkenhagen said. “Of course, selling homes is our passion, but we want our customers to feel free to contact us with any questions they may have about real estate in general, or their home specifically. We’ll be happy to help any way we can.” Lang Realty was established in 1989, and has grown from a modest start with just three sales associates to become one of the top real estate companies in South Florida. The company has expanded to nearly 400 agents with offices in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Manalapan, Jupiter, Port St. Lucie and Boynton Beach at Hunter’s Run. FORT PIERCE – The St. Lucie County Fair is almost here, opening Feb. 26 and running through March 6. There are always a lot of entertainers, but one group, Cactus Moon, a dance troupe, has been coming to the fair for nearly a quarter century. Lisa Johns-Grose of Cactus Moon had been looking for a way to get more physical activity. She began taking line dancing classes at 20 and by 21, she was instructor. Now John-Grose is president of the troupe that has been together since 1993. That was the first year they performed at the St. Lucie County Fair and they return again this year on Feb. 2627 and March 5. The group is unusual in that it is a non-profit 501© (3) organization that performs to raise money for charity. The 23 members do not all dance; some may have injuries and others may want to help with the fundraising but aren’t dancers. “As long as you are interested, we want you with us,” JohnsGrose said. The dancer is a professional teacher, teaching at the Walton Community Center in Port St. Lucie, the Council on Aging in

Comedian’s son remembers era of ‘cool’ STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TREASURE COAST — Sandy Hackett grew up in show business. The son of comedian and actor Buddy Hackett, he called Joey Bishop Uncle Joey and got to see the coolest guys in town: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bishop and Sammy Davis Jr. Those four were the nucleus of the group that came to be known as the Rat Pack. Sandy Hackett first appeared on television on “Rowen and Martin’s Laugh-In.” He was 11. He went on to earn a degree in hotel administration and was an entertainment promoter for many years. In 2000, he started working on a script about the Rat Pack that played in Las Vegas for a number of years. In 2009, Hackett and his wife, Lisa Dawn Miller, created their own show, known as “Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack Show.” Miller has her own show business pedigree, as the daughter of Ron Miller, composer of songs such as “For Once in My Life” and “Wasn’t I a Good Time.” The two bring the show to the Sunrise Theatre Feb. 25.
Hackett and Miller spoke from California about the show that details a special era in show business history. “The Rat Pack was the perfect storm of entertainment, circa the 1960s,” Hackett said. “Frank Sinatra was the Number One live attraction and Number One at the box office and recording. No other performer did this. He came up with “Ocean’s Eleven” and put his friends in it. They made the movie by day in Las Vegas and had fun at night (on stage.) They sold out Las Vegas. Everyone wanted to see a show with the megastars.” “Part of the magic was that no one knew what would happen,” Miller said. “It was tearful and funny. The show was only together for the 30 days they were together for filming, but it endured because of the love and friendship and bond.” The show they are bringing to the Sunrise is set in 1960, but it is not a period piece. “God, which is a recording of my father’s voice, sends them back for one more show in modern day,” Hackett said. “It allows much more comically and wonderful songs by

Jodie Langel the last 40 years, and his performances are events that generate energy, excitement and a creative look at Judaism. Accompanying Langel and Benson on the piano will be Alan Mason, the music director at Temple Miami of Greater Miami. Mason has been accompanist at all of Temple Beth El Israel’s Broadway Scores shows. Mason’s primary area of training and work is as an accompanist to singers, instrumentalists and choral ensembles. He has performed in concerts at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York City — and locally with the New World Symphony, Florida Philharmonic and Florida Philharmonic Chorus. In addition to the music at Broadway Scores, Temple Beth Israel will be honoring the following longtime volunteers: Arno & Miriam Cassel, Len Heller, Dorothy Janin, Suzanne Klatch,Faith Krumenacker and Ethel Rolnick. Sheldon Cantor, the chairperson of Broadway Scores, said all the people being honored have been making contributions to Temple Beth El Israel for at least 10 years. “This is a group of people who are part of the backbone of our congregation,” Cantor said. “Their volunteerism and service deserves to be honored.” According to Temple Beth El Israel president Harvey Levy, the temple has been undergoing somewhat of a resurgence since Benson’s arrival. “It’s a complete turnaround from where we were before,” Levy said. “Things are so much better at the temple now.” “Since Rabbi Benson’s arrival, he has brought Reform Judaism back to the forefront of our synagogue,” added Cantor. “We have been re-admitted to the Union of Reform Judaism (the national as-

ST. LUCIE WEST — On March 13, folks in St. Lucie West and the surrounding communities will have the opportunity to hear a real live Broadway professional right here in Port St. Lucie. On that night, Jodie Langel, of Boca Raton, will be the headline performer at Temple Beth El Israel’s fifth annual Broadway Scores event. The idea behind the event is to provide a fun night of Broadway show tunes for temple members and the community — in addition to being a fundraising evening where the synagogue honors some of its longtime volunteers. With the participation of Langel this year, however, the Broadway in Broadway Scores will have extra special meaning. “It’s great to have someone performing Broadway songs who doesn’t just like singing this type of music, but has actually been there,” said Rabbi Bruce Benson, the temple’s new spiritual leader since July of 2015. “If you are going to do a show about Broadway songs, what is better than to have a performer who has done the real thing? “I would encourage people who like this kind of music to go ahead and get their seats now for this wonderful show.” Among the shows Langel will be singing music from is “Les Misérables” — which she appeared in on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre on West 45th Street in New York City in 1987. Langel will also be singing music from “Evita” — a show in which she played the title role of Eva Perón at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre in 2009. Benson saw Langel performing this role in this production at the Maltz and was very impressed. “Jodie was wonderful,” Benson said. ‘She was extremely good. When I found out we had the opportunity to get someone of this caliber for our Broadway Scores show, I was extremely happy.” Langel — in addition to being an actress, author, teacher and coach — has performed in more than 50 symphonies, concerts, condos and concert halls all over the United States. Joining Langel on stage will be Benson, who is also a cantor — a Jewish liturgical singer. According to a Temple Beth El Israel press release, Benson has been a guiding voice in music for

Hailing from Northern Ireland, Feherty turned professional in 1976 and spent most of his playing career in Europe, where he won five times and finished in the top ten twice in the European Tour’s Order of Merit, placing tenth in 1989 and eighth in 1990. He spent 1994 and 1995 playing mainly on the PGA Tour in the U.S. His best result on the tour was a second place finish at the 1994 New England Classic. Feherty represented Ireland in international competition and captained the victorious 1990 Alfred Dunhill Cup team. Feherty played for Europe on the 1991 Ryder Cup team. Photo courtesy of Rabbi Bruce Benson Rabbi Bruce Benson, a leading force in Jewish music for the last 40 years, will be one of the performers at the Broadway Scores event at Temple Beth El Israel in St. Lucie West on Sunday evening, March 13. He has been rabbi of the temple since July of 2015.
BROADWAY from page B5 sociation of Reform synagogues). “This links us more closely to the other Reform synagogues on the Treasure Coast in Vero Beach and Stuart.” Cantor said this shift has brought about a dramatic rise in temple membership. “Since July, we have had about 30 new or returning families,” Cantor said. “Services are much better attended as they are more uplifting. Our Friday night attendance is three to four times what it used to be.” “That kind of growth is extraordinary in this atmosphere of low synagogue and church attendance,” added Benson. “We are having 75 to 100 people for Friday night services. “That’s a large number for a smaller Jewish community. But, there’s always room for more.” In the spirit of growth and planning for the future, Temple Beth El Israel will be formally acknowledging its commitment to Benson in light of his signing a new multi-year contract with a special ceremony on Friday evening, Feb. 19. “This Broadway Scores event
is just the beginning for us,” Benson said. “We are planning many exciting events in the coming months, as well as already starting to plan for next year. This temple has a very strong future ahead of us.” The Broadway Scores concert will take place at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 13 at Temple Beth El Israel, located at 551 S.W. Bethany Drive in St. Lucie West in Port St. Lucie (zip code 34986). The show is expected to last about an hour-and-a-half. Tickets are $36 for general seating and $25 for student seating. Patron admission is $75, including preferred seating. There will be dessert offered after the performance. There also will be a process in which one member of the audience will have the opportunity to join Langel on stage (call the temple office for more details). Tickets, or more information about the show or synagogue, are available at the temple office — which is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — or by calling (772) 336-2424. Information about the temple can also be found online at www.tbei. org.

FAIR from page B1 and instructors that help us raise money. Johns-Grose said that line dancing has changed a great deal since the days of the Electric Slide. “We dance the same steps they use on Broadway,” she said. “It’s jazz, tap, salsa, merengue and cha cha. It’s not all country anymore. It’s world-wide and it has hip-hop and blues. We use music from a variety of genres. We’re traditional in our uniforms and open up line dancing to a whole new audience.” Jeanne Keaton is general manager of the fair. She noted that fair-goers have the opportunity to hear local talent that has pre-registered to perform on Saturdays
and Sundays from noon -7:30 p.m. at the Adams Arena. “We have kids that do gymnastics, dance and boxing teams,” she said. “These are kids that don’t get to perform in front of such a large audience. They’re all local and they get the crowds dancing. When the groups come to perform, the fair donates $150 to each group for expenses.” Come to the Fair. You can see professionals do what they do best and kids working their hearts out. It’s a win-win for everyone. The 51st annual St. Lucie County Fair will take place Feb. 26-March 6 at 15601 W. Midway Road, Fort Pierce. For more information. Visit the website www.stluciecountyfair. org.

Battle of Okeechobee a look back at history FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TREASURE COAST — Once again the reenactment of the Battle of Okeechobee, specifically the Second Seminole War, will be held in Okeechobee County on Saturday, Feb. 27 through Feb. 28. A new venue and fresh entertainment have been added. The Paul Buster Band and Cypress Billie, are featured this year. Jed Marum and Ricky Pittman will be back from Texas to entertain with 1800s Irish Folk Music. At the upcoming event, time period Federal and Seminole artifacts will be featured and on hand for display. You will not want to miss this opportunity to see these historic artifacts which have never been viewed in such a public venue. The artifacts are courtesy of Mr. Steve Carr. The Okeechobee Battlefield Friends, Inc. are coordinating the upcoming event. Gates will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days and battle re-enactments will also be held both days; Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. Admission is $10 per car. Seating is limited; it is recommended to bring your own chair. This historic battle, fought on Christmas Day in 1837, was the largest and fiercest battle of the Second Seminole War. A talented cast of reenactors will portray fierce Indian warriors such as the great Indian war leaders Abiaca, Coacoochee, Halleck-Tustenug-
gee and Alligator. Some of these great warriors are portrayed by their descendants. As the drama unfolds, it depicts how the Seminoles, greatly outnumbered, battled the massive militia and U.S. Army troops led by Colonel Zachary Taylor and Colonel Richard Gentry of the Missouri Volunteers. The dramatic battle will be narrated by author and historian John Missall. Experience Seminole and other artisans, Seminole clothing raffles, Pow Wow Dancing, period vendors and exhibits, Seminole Indian food, living history, cannon demonstrations, alligator demonstrations, children’s horse rides, music, fun, food and more. Come and enjoy a fun-filled family day. Please note there is a location change for the upcoming event. Due to large amounts of rainfall and wet conditions at Okeechobee Battlefield Historic State park, this year’s event will take place at Okee-Tantie Park, 10430 St Rd 78W. Directions to Okee-Tantie are: From Hwy 70, turn South onto US 441, then right onto St Rd 78W to the Kissimmee River. Okee-Tantie Park is on the left just before the River, 10430 St Rd 78 W, Okeechobee. Please look for signage. This event is sponsored by many agencies, organizations and individuals. Please call (863) 610-2333 or (863) 763-8667 for further information or visit www.okeechobeebattlefield.com or Facebook: Battle of Okeechobee.

HACKETT from page B3 Ron Miller. It’s not a tribute show.” “Sandy brings improv comedy,” Miller said. “There’s no holding back with Sandy.” The two also perform in the show. Hackett plays Joey Bishop and Miller Frank Sinatra’s “One Love.” “We related it to Ava Gardner,” Miller said. “People are so definite about who it was. Some say it was (first wife) Nancy and others (last wife) Barbara. As a team, we felt it was Ava Gardner. They were tempestuous.” The cast is made up of people who capture the essence of the performers they portray. “They are not look-alikes or sound-alikes,” Hackett said. “People say, ‘You look just like Joey Bishop.’ I look nothing like Joey Bishop.” “I think what we see with so many tribute artists is accentuated mannerisms,” Miller said. “That’s not what they were about. What has worked is the relationship between them. There will never be another Frank. It’s the relationships between him and Dean or Sammy. We do have a relatively new Frank, but Sandy has been friends with ‘Dean’ and ‘Sammy’ for decades. That enters into the performance.” Hackett and Miller met in Las
Vegas, when Miller, a stockbroker, came to see a show and Hackett ended up in her lap. Miller had never wanted to go into the family business of entertainment, but together, the two have become a power musical couple. They have written a show about male menopause done in musical theater style and are working on a new musical, “For Once in My Life,” about Miller’s father. Hackett also has a show, “My Buddy,” about his father, a man he said was his best friend. Hackett said that while fans of the Rat Pack will love the show, you don’t have to know who they are to enjoy the show. “Even if you never heard of these guys, it’s an incredible evening of entertainment,” he said. “It’s funny and it’s a history lesson.” “The music is great,” Miller said. “These songs have endured 50-60 years. They’re timeless. A well-written, well-crafted song will survive the ages. If you start with a great song that is melodic, it can go for generations and each one will make it their own.” “Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack” will be presented at the Sunrise Theatre, 117 S. Second St., Fort Pierce, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $45 and $55. Call the box office at (772) 4614775 or order online at www.sunrisetheatre.com.
