ST. It will include live safety demonstrations, safety-related information from all local first responders and more. “We’ve got the Sheriff’s Department, the St. Lucie County Fire District, the police department, Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, public schools, anybody and everybody will be involved in it and giving information to the public,” Farrell said. The live demonstrations will feature the Port St. Lucie Police SWAT Team, the Florida Fire Marshal’s burn trailer, St. Lucie County Fire District’s Jaws of Life and more. “If you’ve never seen a SWAT team demonstration, it’s amaz-

Christ Fellowship readies to serve STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TRADITION — Christ Fellowship is throwing open its doors at the former Tradition Studios on Friday, April 29, for its first public-welcomed program in Tradition. “It’s an opportunity for our neighbors to come and see what we’re all about,” Rochelle Gilken, spokeswoman, said. “They’ll get to know some of our church team and see what we’re building as church together.” When Christ Fellowship opens it’ll be the only permanent-structure church in Tradition. There are at least two other churches meeting in Tradition. Exponential Church meets at Renaissance Charter School at 10900 S.W. Tradition Parkway. The other, Living Faith Church, meets at Tradition Town Hall, 10799 Civic Lane. Christ Fellowship made a stir last year when it approached the city with a $13 million offer to buy the defunct Digital Domain’s Tradition Studios. That was far less than the city hoped to get for an unwanted asset from a failed
ᾐ
economic-development project, and the proposed sale would take the valuable property off tax rolls. But every other potential buyer was coming up with more problems than cash. The City Council bit the bullet and took the money. In July Port St. Lucie City Manager Jeff Bremer ceremonially handed the keys of Tradition Studios over to Christ Fellowship pastors. Buying the building came about the same time the Palm Beach Gardens church was preparing to open its new 50,000-squarefoot Stuart campus. That facility, which opened in August, was its eighth. The church had been holding services at Stuart’s South Fork High School before then. The church claims about 21,000 weekly attendees among its facilities, which span from Palm Beach County westward to Okeechobee. The church also has a location in New York City. Gilken said Christ Fellowship had essentially tore out walls in the 115,000-square-foot Tradition building to reconfigure its interior to create classrooms and a sanctuary Gilken said the church needs a number of separated areas, because it runs several

On April 29 doors will open to the public at 6:30 p.m. programs simultaneously. For example, when regular services are going, so are CFKids programs. “The children in there learn Bib-
lical stories and are in with other children their age,” Gilken said.

ST. LUCIE WEST — C’mon in, the water is fine. When the St. Lucie West Services District mails water bills next week, they’ll arrive at mailboxes with the annual drinking water quality report, too. Normally there aren’t a whole lot of folks who read those annual reports. However, there are lingering reports about water problems discovered in various places around the country, but especially in Flint, Mich. There’s also, of course, the proliferation of pollution in local waterways that have people wondering about their drinking water supplies. Folks have been calling the district with questions about water quality.

“The biggest thing that people are fearful of right now is the lead and copper,” Dennis Pickle, manager and utilities director, said. “We are not exceeding any toxic levels of lead or copper and we’re not having the issues in Michigan and other parts of the nation.” Pickle said the water-quality report can be a bit confusing to the average readers. For that, he apologizes, and said he’d design it differently. “The Florida Department of Environmental Protection requires this format,” Pickle said. “The format is regulated. We can’t vary from the format.” In a nutshell, the report says that fluoride levels in St. Lucie West are right at the bottom end of optimal levels. The dis-

Civility breaks out at Cascades Dear Editor: Amazing! After Your Voice News & Views printed the letter regarding various situations in the Cascades of St. Lucie West, from Mr. Pritchard and Mr. Knoll, and then Mr. Gavaletz trying to stir the pot of discontent, and Sharon Sorensen’s reply, things started to happen. Please note, after you placed the issues transparently for all to read in Your Voice — and after a new president and some new district reps were voted in, and only after a new Board of Directors was voted in — an amazing thing happened. Calmness and civility broke out. Experience in HOA management, and financial expertise took center stage. Open and transparent discussions rolled through the meeting room. Residents and the new board talk about solving problems and making life in this beautiful retirement community even better. Bill Lamm showed giant savings on a few projects, and peaceful discourse filled our ears with hope and a fresh attitude of “teamwork” for Cas-
cades. Spring housecleaning took place. The mean-spirited attitude of the past boards was replaced with reasonable people doing the right thing for Cascades, not just playing kings and queens, us against them, voting 4 to 3 again. Your Voice’s coverage and efforts, and the resulting overwhelming board changes, show the impact of your community newspaper. I agree with Sharon. Cascades is truly a beautiful bit of paradise, and like any gem, it needs constant attention, frequent polishing and care. This is an association of neighbors, all interested in the best for residents and homeowners. This is not competition games between board members. This should be a team effort, with lots of homework, research, and input from residents and comparisons of costs and value. Like they say, a new broom sweeps clean. This is our spring cleaning. Thanks, neighbors for your support ... and thanks, Your Voice. Bob Poller St. Lucie West

OUR MISSION We are here to provide our readers with completely unbiased news coverage. Fun and entertaining features about the communities in which they live. For our advertising partners we pledge to provide the most complete consultative and marketing programs possible for the best return on their investments.
Dear Editor: Just a quick note to again say thank you for the great coverage of the district’s initial budget review. I hear positive responses from those I meet about the communication provided and their appreciation. On another note — as a resident of the Cascades of St. Lucie West, and a well-respected SLW resident, I am hopeful the controversy alleged and countered through the letters being published will now end. The sequence of letters has been tough on the community; however, I commend
you and your staff for positioning the various letters as was done. That sequence indicated the community’s true beliefs. Someday, when we meet, I’ll be glad to share with you the real facts surrounding the perceived allegations of the two part-time residents quoted. It was also very interesting to read the Eovaldi letter relative to Lake Charles, which also proves how perceptions without facts can turn into a real mess. Wayne Smith Cascades Board Secretary, Seat 2, St. Lucie West
There’s nothing we can do about All Aboard Florida? Dear Editor: I’ve always said, for me the most hated sentence in the English language is, “There’s nothing we can do.” Nothing? There is almost always something. It may not be a pleasant thing or a socially acceptable thing and sometimes, not even a legal thing, but there is almost always something we can do. In a newspaper article, Rich Campbell (TCPalm) said there is nothing we on the Treasure Coast can do about AAF (All Aboard Florida) because it is a federally protected and promoted project, and will go through regardless of our little ant-like attempts to affect policy with our clever cardboard signs and our bird-like cries of protest. It’s all bigger than us, he says, only we don’t realize it yet. The feds want it, Florida politicians are already bought and paid for, so … don’t think that your efforts
can make a whit of a difference. Think about history. What did angry, fed-up, righteous citizens do when it seemed there was nothing anyone could do about an injustice? Did they just wring their hands and stand back as powerful groups had their way with them? Or did they band together and come up with a plan to overcome? Are we there yet, “mad as hell and not going to take it anymore?” Or are we still hoping that our [bought off] leaders and [expensive] legal advisors will find a way to save us from this destructive and intrusive invasion into our peaceful existence? Rich Campbell says we’re wasting our money on that path. That there’s simply “nothing we can do.” Well, what other options does a free, taxpaying, power holding, self-directing, self-respecting citizen have? Any ideas? Anyone? Tricia Allison

An avid fisherman all his life, as well as a speedboat racer and breeder of beagles, it wasn’t until 1999, that Jarusinski began competing professionally as a sports fisherman. After an inarguable victory at the SKA 2005 championship in the small boat class, and a landslide vote that won him the third slot in the organization’s Hall of Fame, Jarusinski claims that now the only thing on his boat or person that isn’t sponsored is his underwear. Jarusinski has never been satisfied with mediocrity and is always developing new techniques to reel in bigger results. He is a strong proponent of straight rigs — which keep hooks horizontal instead of letting them fall slack — ringed hooks which allow his bait better flexibility, and small

Stan has also become so adept at reading his prey, that he can often guess the weight of his fish within a halfpound and sometimes the gender, solely based on their run. Even in 2004, when Stan was laid up in a hospital bed after triple bypass surgery, he had only one thing on his mind: how to win the next year’s SKA championship. Which he did. Jarusinski hit the shoals with renewed courage that year and describes the 2005 championship, perhaps the largest feather in his crest, as a moment of

St. Lucie West Service District to consider permanent building Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — The St. Lucie West Services District has been getting by on the cheap with a modular office building since about 2010. It also hasn’t raised rates since 2010, and it’s not looking at raising them next fiscal year. Still, through consistent fiscal care, the district has accumulated about $4.2 million, and Dennis Pickle, manager and utilities director, thinks it might be prudent for it to spring for a new, permanent office now before construction costs go up. “It wouldn’t raise (water) rates in any way if we built a hardened structure,” he said. The current modular office is rated for winds up to 135 mph, which is enough to rough most storms. Nevertheless, Pickle said it’d be better to have a hardened structure to serve as a command center during a major hurricane. Last year the board of directors had Pickle start a building fund, aiming to stretch it over about five budget years. “I started looking at it and said, ‘Why wouldn’t we pull the trigger,’” he said. Pickle, who hasn’t yet had an opportunity to present the proposal to the board of directors, said it would cost about $700,000 to $1 million to build a 5,000-square-foot building. Pickle believes it’d come in at about $800,000. Pickle said that a new office building, if approved by the board, could be built behind the
modular office at 450 S.W. Utility Drive, so customers wouldn’t experience any interruptions. After construction, the modular could be sold to make room for Dennis Pickle a parking-lot expansion. If the board wishes, it could approve funds to start engineering plans in June or July. The board meets monthly. “That way we’d be ready to bid in the October to November timeframe,” Pickle said. That is, after the start of the next fiscal year, which is October. “Construction costs are just going to go up year after year,” Pickle said. If all is approved and construction moves forward, building the permanent facility could start the beginning of 2017 and finish by summer. The district is a Community Development District, which is a hybrid creation of the State Legislature. The districts operate as governmental bodies to deliver some municipal services, such as water and sewer. The services district also handles storm-water management in St. Lucie West.

TRADITION — The St. Lucie Mets are excited to announce their initial 2016 roster, one that features six of the Mets’ top 30 prospects, according to MLB.com. Highlighting the roster is Amed Rosario, a 20-year-old shortstop who is MLB.com’s third ranked Mets prospect. Rosario will be joined by other highly ranked position player prospects in outfielder Wuilmer Becerra (No. 8), third baseman Jhoan Urena (No. 12) infielder Luis Guillorme (No. 15) and outfielder John Mora (No. 28). Right-handed starter Chris Flexen (No. 29) rounds out the top 30 Mets prospects in St. Lucie. As the youngest player in the Florida State League in 2015, Rosario played in 103 games with St. Lucie. He was briefly promoted to Double-A Binghamton at
the end of the season. With St. Lucie he batted .257 and hit 20 doubles. Rosario’s partner in the middle infield will be slick-fielding Luis Guillorme, who was the everyday shortstop at Savannah in 2015 and will shift to second base to start this year. Lauded for his glove work, Guillorme won the South Atlantic League Player of the Year award in 2015. Speed should be a strength for the Mets. Guillorme swiped 18 bases in Savannah last year, and infielder Jonathan Johnson stole 23 for the Sand Gnats. Outfielders Partick Biondi (38), John Mora (14) and Becerra (16) combined for 68 stolen bases with Savannah. Champ Stuart returns
to St. Lucie. He was successful in 21 of 24 stolen base attempts. That’s a total of 89 stolen bases among the four outfielders on the roster. Becerra should bring a power aspect to the lineup. He blasted nine home runs last year, and drove in 63 runs while batting .290. Becerra came to the Mets organization as part of the trade that sent R.A. Dickey to the Toronto Blue Jays in return for Noah Syndergaard and Travis d’Arnaud. At the time of the trade, Becerra’s

The Mets rotation doesn’t feature an uber prospect like Jacob deGrom or Steven Matz this year, but Flexen, Ricky Knapp, Josh Prevost, Corey Oswalt, Casey Delgado and Scarlyn Reyes are all coming off solid 2015 campaigns and should be in the rotation. Prevost has been tabbed as the Opening Day starter. Robby Coles and Jimmy Duff return to the Mets bullpen after they finished the 2015 in St. Lucie. Other familiar faces on the Mets’ pitching staff include Kevin McGowan, Michael Gibbons, Paul Paez and Tim Peterson. The two catchers on the roster are Tomas Nido and Cuba native Lednier Ricardo. destiny. A few days before the tournament, during a pre-fishing expedition, he tells how a seabird flew onto his hat and stayed there for a half-hour. He and his three team-mates saw this as a sign from above. Jarusinski’s team only caught two fish the entire two-day aggregate that year, but that was all they needed to reel in the trophy. The first fish weighed in at 42.47 pounds, and the second day they hauled in a 39.91 pounder for a grand total of 82.23 pounds. A massive tornado loomed on the horizon as they turned back to shore to claim their prize, amid the “holy mackerels” of the crowd. The 2005 SKA championship was originally scheduled to be held November in Biloxi, MS, a favorite locale for the tournament, but due to adverse weather conditions, it was postponed and held in Fort Pierce the following April. In 2010, during the BP spill that leaked almost 5 billion barrells of oil into the gulf, the organization again relocated to Fort Pierce. Since then, St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky, his colleague at the Tourism Development Council (TDC), Charlotte Bireley, as well as the Treasure Coast Sports Com-
mission, and Fort Pierce mayor Linda Hudson, among others, have endeavored to make Fort Pierce a regular staple for the tournament. Dzadovsky says that Jarusinsky has been relentless in his efforts to help attract the competition, and has helped organize the community around the idea, being one of the more prominent fishing celebrities in the area. This January, SKA committed to holding their championship in Fort Pierce on a three year cycle, and lesser exposure tournaments in the off-years. That isn’t enough, says Jarusinski: he wants to lock in Fort Pierce as the championship headquarters and make Fort Pierce as much of a destination for kingfish competitions as Homestead is for NASCAR. “Stan moved to Port St. Lucie because of the good fishing in Fort Pierce, and he knew the SKA really belonged here,” says Linda Hudson, mayor of Fort Pierce. “So he has been tirelessly working toward that, and his enthusiasm has been so contagious that he got everyone on board. So, we’ve been working on them for about 4 years, and we’ve tried to convince them that this is the place they need to be. They finally gave in,” she says with a laugh. 26319

CHURCH from page A3 The children are divided by age groups from newborns to fifth grade. “Then we do CFStudents, which is middle and high school,” Gilken said. She said the church’s individual campuses develop programs based largely on needs in their areas. For example, if a large number of, say, people with severe hearing impairments attend the Tradition campus, a deaf ministry would likely follow. “Over time ministries that help to meet the needs of people in the community will grow,” Gilken said. The church has had a few events at Tradition. In February and earlier this month, it invited select groups of people to what the church calls “connect events.” “Those events were attended by a few hundred people,” Gilken said. On Saturday, April 16, the Tradition campus will have its first part in a program called Makea-Meal. The church did it for the first time last year. It assembled food care packages bound for food-insecure areas in Africa. “Last year we made 290,000 meals,” Gilken said. She said while the church loves

However, volunteer opportunities will abound at Christ Fellowship. “What we want is people to know God, to grow in their faith, and impact the world around them,” Gilken said. “One of the ways to do that is to serve.”
Christ Fellowship is opening at 10250 S.W. Village Parkway. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and there’ll be a short program starting at 7 p.m. Attendees can reserve at www.gochristfellowship.com/ port-st-lucie.

trict adds fluoride to the water. There are many who argue that fluoride, which occurs naturally in water, shouldn’t be added. That includes a member of the St. Lucie West Services District Board of Directors, “I’m concerned about overmedicating people for no reason at all,” member Charles Altwein said at the last board of directors April workshop. Pickle told Altwein that fluoridation is a countywide issue. He said so long as St. Lucie County says to fluoridate, the district must. Sodium is another drinking water concern in South Florida, due to apparently increasing saltwater intrusion. The district has less than half the maximum acceptable amount of sodium. The lead and copper in drinking water usually doesn’t come from the source. It’s picked up along the way from pipes. How water is treated before getting sent down those pipes to homes can affect how much lead and copper is picked up along the way. The district, which tests water from about 40 homes a year, has 1.79 parts per billion of lead. The maximum allowed under federal and state laws is 15. Copper tested at an average of .092
parts per million The maximum is 1.3. Pickle said anyone who can’t find the water report, or wants extras, can get them at the district’s office, 450 S.W. Utility Drive. “They’re sitting there right at the counter,” he said. Those with questions about the report, or water quality in general, Pickle said, can call him. He said that while the report is annual there’s constant water-quality testing. “There are all sorts of tests (the federal and state governments) require monthly,” Pickle said. The district is a Community Development District, which is a hybrid creation of the State Legislature. The districts operate as governmental bodies to deliver some municipal services, such as water and sewer. The services district also handles storm-water management in St. Lucie West. The biggest water-quality test is this simple question. Does Pickle, who lives in St. Lucie West, drink the water? He points to a large cup when asked that. “I drink it right out of the tap,” he said. “I live in St Lucie West and drink the water.” For answers about the annual water report, call the St. Lucie West Services District at (772) 340-0220.

Port St Lucie, FL- The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have generic names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, or Cymbalta and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects.

As you can see in Figure 2 , as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning and many additional symptoms. l blood these very smal Figure2: When seased they begin di e vessels becom the nerves begin to d to shrivel up an . te ra ne ge de
The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage then your condition can been treated
In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined. 1. What is the underlying cause? 2. How Much Nerve Damage Has Been Sustained. NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is nothing that we can do for you.
3. How much treatment will your condition require?
The treatment that is provided at our clinic has three main goals: 1. Increase blood flow
The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here on the Treasure Coast that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neruopathy severity examination at the end of this article)
2. Stimulates small fiber nerves
Dr. John Silva will be offering this neuropathy severity examination to the first 15 callers Call to make an appointment with Dr. Silva to determine if your peripheral neuropathy can be treated.

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.
Dr. John Silva at The Neuropathy Relief Center will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. ST. LUCIE WEST — For the last two years, IRSC biology students at the Pruitt campus in St. Lucie West have been conducting real experiments in an authentic laboratory setting. As participants of the national SEA-PHAGES program (which stands for Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science), the students are being exposed to “the skill set they need for jobs in biotechnology and molecular biology,” says Tom D’Elia, who teaches the course with Dr.

Helen Koch. “They leave here with very good lab skills compared to students who haven’t participated in research like this,” he says. The two semester course has students identifying never-before discovered viruses and analyzing them. They begin by collecting soil samples from the local environment, and then isolating certain viruses in the soil called bacteriophages. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect and kill bacteria, such as the non-pathogenic strain of tuberculosis the students are working with. Once they’re able to isolate and purify the virus populations, they

BIOLOGY from page A23 extract the DNA and send it to Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) at University of Pittsburgh, where the national program is headquartered. HHMI then sequences the DNA and sends the code back to the students for computational analysis. During the second semester, the young scientists are able to name their phages, and categorize and cross-compare their specimens against others, using bioinformatic technology to find similarities and unique genetic attributes. The technique has a distinct parallel in current epidemiological practices, including the dangerous Zika virus, says D’Elia. “One of the first things (scientists) do with the Zika virus is purify it, sequence its genome, and then figure out what it’s similar to,” he says. “Once you know what the genes are, you can start to see the sort of experiments you have to do to figure out how it spreads, how we can prevent it, and how we can develop vaccines.” Because the program is so relevant to the professional field and provides the students with project ownership, it has engaged students in a way that exceeds other biology courses. Ivanna Meservey, a former nursing student at IRSC who is in her third year with the biology department, says the program is indispensable for students wanting to enter the research or medical field. “The skill set is very practical and very applicable to what you’ll use if you work for a real lab,” she says. “It’s been one of the most important courses I’ve taken in the biology department. Otherwise, it’s like playing in the lab, but there’s not a real purpose. (SEA-PHAGES) is very purposeful.” Meservey recently began an internship with the USDA in Fort Pierce and is applying what she’s learned with SEA-PHAGES to the study of infectious diseases in oranges. Meservey claims her work with DNA extraction within the SEA-PHAGES program was a deciding factor in her being chosen for the opportunity.
IVC Filters are medical devices designed to prevent pulmonary embolism by catching blood clots that may be traveling through your bloodstream. Studies have indicated that retrievable IVC filters may have caused multiple types of adverse events, including:
• Fracture causing metal pieces to spread throughout the body • Migrate to the heart and lungs • Perforate major organs The FDA is aware of these adverse event reports and twice has recommended that retrievable IVC filters be removed as soon as safely possible. We provide free evaluations regarding these cases. We will not charge you for this evaluation; and in fact, we will never charge you a fee or cost unless we take your case and you first recover money. Dr. Graham Hatfull, the professor with HHMI who helped launch the national program in 2008, says that bacteriophage research is not a new phenomenon, though it’s experienced a recent resurgence. There are more bacteriophages in the world than all other forms of life added together, says Hatfull. Additionally, scientists believe that phages are extremely old, based on their structural makeup. This means that phages are enormously diverse due to genetic mutation over billions of years. “The chances are very high that students will isolate something that’s never been isolated before,” says Hatfull. “So it’s a scenario that’s set up to be richly rewarding in terms of discovery. That element of having such a strong seam of discovery not only advances the science, but at the same time it can have a very positive impact on the students who are taking part in the work.” From the ‘50’s through the ‘70’s, bacteriophage research helped cultivate advances in molecular biology and biotechnology. Now, with many bacteria adapting antibiotic-resistant strains, renewed attention is being given to bacteriophages as an alternative treatment for infectious disease. While phage therapy and phage engineering (which is used by scientists to address issues like infant mortality) are becoming more prevalent, there is still much to learn about the diversity of these viruses, as well as their behavior. That’s where the students come in.

“At this stage of our knowledge, we don’t know what the genes do,” says Meservey, whose class named their particular phage “DudeLittle.” “They’re just called genes, because they have a beginning and an end, but we don’t know what the genes are doing. We’re collecting all the knowledge of these phages and trying to figure out what’s going on.” In so doing, the students are playing a real part in the natural history of the viruses, much like Charles Darwin who filled notebooks with illustrations of genetically mutated pigeons, before formulating a theory of

evolution. Perhaps the most important element of the program, however, is a reinvestment of student interest in laboratory science. Within the last decade, the attrition rate for bachelor’s students studying STEM courses has been nearly 50 percent; the rate is higher for community colleges. Because of the authentic laboratory experience and the ability for the students to discover and classify their own specimens, the SEA-PHAGES initiative has helped offset the loss of interest. D’Elia says, “They have a lot of statistics that show how students in the SEA Phages program have higher retention, and
are more likely to graduate and continue in the sciences.” “I don’t think they’re really saying that they’re going to absolutely find a tuberculosis cure by this,” D’Elia adds. “The more important emphasis of the program is providing students with an authentic research experience, a hands-on active learning experience, so that they can apply what they’re learning in class to a real context.” In general, the biology department at IRSC is progressive, Meservey claims, and the addition of SEA-PHAGES makes it all the more superb. “(The department) is very competitive, very good quality. All of the instructors have doc-
torates, so the level of instruction is very high. And the commitment of the teachers is very high, because they don’t have other things they’re working on at the time.” D’Elia says that he and his colleagues are currently looking at ways to incorporate segments or techniques from the SEA-PHAGES program, right now studied primarily by juniors and seniors, into the general coursework, They’ve already begun doing miniature versions of it in the regular microbiology course, but he says there’s plenty more that can be done and is being done to incorporate the SEA-PHAGES program into their core curriculum.

FISHING from page A17 Fort Pierce has a long-standing history with fishing culture, and is one of the best places for catching kingfish just off the coast. In a place like Biloxi, boaters have to traverse 80 miles to get out to the shoals, whereas in Fort Pierce, they can go out just two or three miles and start fishing. Stan claims it is the best place in Florida for northern and southern migrating kingfish, and an obvious choice for the championship. With the new docks which were built just last December, there is an added attraction for such events. Dean Kubitschek, Fort Pierce marina manager, says, “People move to Fort Pierce because of the small-town environment and its fisheries. The tournament is helping to reiterate how strong the fishing community is here. Fort Pierce has one of the best utilized public marina facilities I’ve ever seen.” Apart from telling people where to fish, Stan will famously share all of his tricks and expertise with whoever asks. ki will lead a seminar at the Fort Pierce Yacht Club where he will go over all the aspects of rig, reel, and tackle, the SKA, and specific techniques that have helped him in his career. As a young man, he says, it was fishing that kept him out of trouble, and he is always looking for an opportunity to give back and inspire more people to fish. In North Carolina, where he lived before moving to St. Lucie in 2011, he and his wife Barbara organized an annual tournament that raised $263,000 over 14 years for impoverished and sick children. It’s hard to say exactly what SKA has in store for Fort Pierce, but Capt. Stan Jarusinski has set his hook in them, and now he’s waiting for this big fish to come swimming back to this smalltown pond. The May 18 event will be at 7 p.m. at the Fort Pierce Yacht Club, 700 N Indian River Dr., Fort Pierce. Please direct any inquiries to John Rost with the Fishing Club. Summer intense for ballet students Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — In 2004, husbandand-wife dancers Lydia Oquendo Corrales and Rogelio Corrales opened the St. Lucie Ballet. Its goal was to instill in young dancers the training and discipline necessary to become proficient in ballet, as well as in other dance forms. This summer, the St. Lucie Ballet will present Summer Intensive 2016 in two sessions. The first runs from June13-July 1 and the second from July 11-July 29. There are classes for toddlers, children, teens and pre-professionals. Students can take classes in ballet, jazz and contemporary dance. There are no auditions for the summer sessions, but students are asked to try a class so that they can be placed at the appropriate level. Every student at the Summer Intensive takes ballet every day and students can also try other styles of dance. Students from the Intermediate Level and up take ballet from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and have classes in technique, vocabulary and choreography, Pointe and Pas de Deux, and Pointe and Variations. Pre-ballet through Level 2 take classes in the evening. There is also Creative Movement in the early evening for those ages 3-4. Special events during the summer sessions include workshops in contemporary and jazz dance and choreography. In the latter, students can choreograph their own works. They will also perform in Mini-Shows, presented for friends and families. Oquendo Corrales noted that the summer

All styles of dance have good ballet training as their base.” Lydia Oquendo Corrales in mind, St. Lucie Ballet is definitely the right fit.” The Ballet is known for its production of “The Nutcracker” at the Sunrise Theatre in December and Oquendo Corrales noted that special consideration for that production is given to students in

BALLET from page B1 sessions permit more intensive training on a day-to-day basis. The Best Chinese Cuisine
Starring Steve Cohen, Debbie Arthur, Dan Beuscher and others. Directed by John Procino George’s favorite hobby is hypochondria. When he mistakenly overhears his doctor discussing another patient with heart trouble, he prepares to meet the end bravely, and is sure it’s his time. Putting his affairs in order, he writes a heartbreaking letter to his wife to be read as his eulogy. He even arranges a good second husband for his soon-to-be widow, with a cemetery plot for three: himself, his wife and the new future ‘Mister Kimball’. The fun really starts when Mrs. Kimball learns that George is as healthy as a horse.
