YOUTH IN REVOLT

Size four models that look like they haven’t had a bad hair day or a zit in their entire life, celebrities airbrushed beyond recognition, one thousand and one ways to get an orgasm, articles encouraging girls as young as thirteen to go out dressed in little more than a hanky, a one thousand five hundred dollar scarf advertised as a wise investment, girls ‘dressed’, posed and hotographed for the pleasure of perverted old men and pubescent little boys, 20 question quizzes that will determine the rest of your life, miracle diets and miracle creams. That’s not life that’s a glossy magazine. Life’s is an amazing, beautiful, eye opening journey, a learning process through which we gather the knowledge and experience required to pass from this life into the next. Youth in revolt will evoke thought, feeling and discussion from start to finish, life will never be a glossy magazine but this, is progress. This is YOUTH IN REVOLT.

YOUTH IN REVOLT

Letter from the editors This time last year we began planning something that we both knew was going to change our lives in a big way. We came together and started thinking about a way to use both of our talents to create a collaborative project that would act as a platform to promote both ourselves and other young creatives. It has now become much more than that. Youth in Revolt has been an incredible motivator for us to not only become better at our chosen crafts, but also to encourage others to get out of their comfort zone and explore different ideas both personally and creatively, in much the same way Youth in Revolt has allowed us to. 2011 was an incredibly trying year for us both in different ways. Creating and working on Youth in Revolt together has been very therapeutic. It’s not often you meet someone that you can work with and with whom you can form a genuine bond. We consider ourselves very lucky. We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished so far and can’t wait to produce even bigger and better issues over the next year. Just before we started writing this ‘Letter from the Editors’, we sat there perplexed as to how we would accurately describe the amount of love and gratitude we have for our readers, and as cliché’ as it sounds (we can’t believe we’re about to say this) there really are no words. The readers aren’t the only people we have to thank though, over the last ten issues we have had countless contributors of all different varieties who have helped us to make every issue better than the last, and for that we are indebted to you all. So now that’s over, on to the apologies – We are sorry that sometimes Nicole does her write-ups drunk and the spelling and grammar is a little eh, we are sorry sometimes the page count is a little low in comparison to the issue that preceded it, Nicole is sorry she can’t decide whether to write under ‘Nicole Daphne’ or ‘Nicole Daphne Wilson’ and Olivia is sorry that sometimes she spells it wrong. We’re sorry we don’t check our emails enough, we’re sorry that sometimes we talk like this -“OmFg F0 ReAlz?” and we’re sorry for being so ‘fucking weird’. We’re not really sorry about that last one. We honestly have no idea what will happen to Youth in Revolt between now and this time next year but we couldn’t be more pumped to take it on. Happy New Years everybody, Stay Revolting. “What’s in your bag?” Editors edition

Nicole’s Bag

(1) Paw Paw ointment - I take it everywhere because my lips get super dry without it, it’s a life saver. I bedazzled the lid using left over nail stickers from my 21st party because I’m so creative, obviously. (2) Headphones - Listening to music can make any situation seem, easier, quicker, happier and more enjoyable. I can’t bare the thought of not being able to listen to music on a long trip, I’d die. (3) A pencil and a diary - Being a writer, it’s always good to keep something handy if the mood strikes. (4) Nail clippers - I’m always constantly breaking my nails. I hate looking at ugly, uneven nails so I always keep a pair handy. (5) Roaccutane - My skin breaks out because of stress and this year I’ve started taking Roaccutane to stop the random breakouts and it’s worked great. (6) Mood ring - I bought this recently from a thrift shop. It has a smiley face, a peace sign and other symbols on the band. (7) Fake flower - A month or so ago I made a flower crown using fake flowers and I saved this one. (8) Red lipstick - I don’t really like wearing lipstick, but when I do, it’s red, I think I just left it in my bag last time I wore it out. (9) Panadol - This particular week I’d been suffering from a headache for a few days so I made sure I didn’t go anywhere without panadol.W

bL0GG3Rz interviewed by olivia mroz

Alex/Twenty-three/Cleveland/Sagittarius www.nascartween.tumblr.com What do you do? Art director @ ad agency. Do you have any animals? A beautiful piebald cat baby named Ham. What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve done? Having a shart scare while sitting alone in an Arby’s eating curly fries and listening to One Direction. If you started a revolution what would it be? Miss Petite Energy. I love to dance. How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are? Probs like a 90 year old woman. This is solely based on my interests. If you could offer a newborn child only one piece of advice, what would it be? Bathing suit as underwear. Practical. What’s something you know you do differently than most people? Having a shart scare while sitting alone in an Arby’s eating curly fries and listening to One Direction. Are you sick in any way? Avian flu?

Where are you from? Uhh idk really, somewhere around Nottingham. I’m adopted and I’ve forgotten the name of the place, oh well. What do you do? Not a lot. I’ve finished school for now but I’m doing A levels next year. I make music and “art” sometimes I guess though. I spend most of my time just hanging around and being bored. Do you have any animals? No :-(((( I’ve always wanted a dog super bad but my mum won’t let me have one. What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve seen? I saw a drunk 14/15 year old girl on a park flash her tits once. She was fighting with some other girl and her strapless dress thing fell down. She carried on fighting regardless though, super cute. I guess that’s kind of embarrassing. Are you holding onto something you need to let go of? Not really, I usually just tell people stuff if I need to. Or I just forget about it, having a fairly bad memory is a good thing sometimes. Have you been the kind of friend you want as a friend? Probably not, I can imagine myself being really annoying. I don’t know how I have any friends. Actually, I have like 2 or 3 so yeah. What’s your favorite thing to blog about? Pictures of the internet puking because I love Photoshop. What inspires you? This is really sad, but I’ve got to say the internet. I spend so much time on it so it’s influenced me a lot. Do you create? I make “art” @ tomkross.tumblr.com when I’m bored. I make it as a kind of release, and I really love playing around in Photoshop. I like to think that some of it confuses people. Do you think you’re a Indigo/Crystal child? I’ve been told that I’m an Indigo child, but idk. Maybe, maybe not. Have you ever seen anything die? I trapped a spider under a glass once. How do you want to die? There was that woman who jumped off a building or something and landed on a car. The car looked like a coffin kind of and there was a really famous photo taken of it, I think. That’d be pretty cool. How do you feel about cannibalism? “If you like what you’re doing then fuck it.” If someone gave you too much change at a store, and you knew they did, would you keep it? I’d keep it, it’s not my fault they can’t do their job right. If you started a revolution what would it be? Free information. If you could offer a newborn child only one piece of advice, what would it be? Stay away from the internet and kill yr tv.

YOUTH IN REVOLT

What do you do? Art school dropout currently partying hard like Lohan. Who’s your favorite artist? Warhol forever + ever because his work made people think. He involved the creative people he surrounded himself with, it was like one big family. Recently I’ve been obsessing over Frida Kahlo also, a very romantic and stylish woman with a sad life. Tchmo’s prints I found on Tumblr are also inspiring me right now. Have you been the kind of friend you want as a friend? I think I give a lot into friendships which can make me a very vulnerable person most of the time but I think you have to give all of yourself if you want to be close with people. So in that case, maybe I am. I want a friend that gives all of themselves and doesn’t hold back. I still have close friends that I’ve known for years and they still surprise me in the best way because I’m still getting to know them. That’s nice isn’t it? What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you? A bit predictable but I wouldn’t do anything differently! You’re gonna get judged no matter what, its the world we live in, we all do it. It’s better to not think about it + do what you want. I decided when I was around 15 that I had to stop caring about the people that were too lazy to discover new things. I don’t have time for closed minded fucks. If someone is going on at your opinions + views in a negative way 24/7 then cut them out of your life. They’re taking life too seriously and we all know this life is one big joke anyway. Oh and don’t listen to music snobs either, listen to what you want... even if its the latest Cheryl Cole single 50 times in a row. What’s the biggest secret someone has told you? An old friend once told me she was pregnant when I was 11, that was pretty big + fucked up. Turned out she lied though, attention seeking whore. What’s your favorite thing to blog about? Any colourful clashing prints, I’m a big colour fan. That and Madonna because she is my God. What inspires you? At the moment, anything colourful to get me in the summer mood: Fashion designers Meadham Kirchhoff, Roberto Piqueras, Manon Kundig, director Sofia Coppola + the sunsets in my daydreams. Have you ever seen a ghost/ alien? When I look in the mirror I see a fallen angel (lol) + whenever I’m in new cities I always see lookalikes of my friends. Sort of like they’ve evolved their bodies. Does that count? How do you want to die? In my happy place - at a party with a glass of your cheapest white wine on my right, surrounded by friends with J.Lo blaring in the background. How do you feel about cannibalism? I’ve never had the urge to eat someone myself. Some of my friends have though, only because they’re cute. Why would you want to eat someone cute? I’d rather spoon them, stroke them + kiss them all over. I’d treat them like my pet instead, not dinner. Do you believe in true love? I do, I don’t think I could live in a world where there possibility wouldn’t be there. Whether I think I’ll discover it myself is another question. If someone gave you too much change at a store, and you knew they did, would you keep it? Hell yeah, a dolla make me wanna holla hunni boo boo child.

Sandberg’s subject matter combined with his use of vibrant colours makes his works extremely enjoyable to look at. There is also a feeling of mystery to the pieces, a hidden message that we can’t quite put our finger on – so we’ll keep looking till we find it and we hope that you (undoubtedly) enjoy his portraits too. YOUTH IN REVOLT

It’s a Saturday night and to your surprise it’s taking you a lot longer to get drunk than usual, what do you do? Let’s not even pretend you don’t know what I’m about to propose. I’m assuming you have a large bowl handy? What about a deck of cards? And I’d be a bit worried if you didn’t have a few mates over to play with… drinking on your own on a Saturday night isn’t ‘angsty’, it’s sad. So if you answered yes to all of the above, KING’S CUP is about to catapult you into a world of fun, or a world of pain. Good luck, young Skywalker, let us hope the game plays out in your favour. To be honest, every time I’ve played this game the rules have changed especially with the introduction of several King’s Cup apps, putting the cards that we both love, and hate and that had become a Saturday night staple back in the family games cupboard for good. But if you’re a sentimental bastard like myself, here’s some basic rules for traditional Kings Cup game: Ace – Waterfall The person who draws this card begins to drink, then the next, then the next and so on. You cannot stop drinking until the person before you puts down their cup. Two – You The person who draws this card selects another player to take a drink, some nasty targeting often goes down with this card. Three – Me If you draw this card then the joke’s on you. Take a drink buddy. Four – Whores Drink up girls! Five – Jive Each player must bust a move, then you go around and around the circle until someone stuffs up the pattern, and who ever does, drinks! Six - Dicks Your turn to have a drink guys! Seven - Heaven Last person to point to the sky has to drink. Eight - Mate Choose someone who has to drink every time you drink, it’s the perfect chance to be strategic. Nine - Rhyme Pick a word or a phrase and go around the circle until someone fails to come up with something to rhyme with the word/phrase given by the last player. Ten – Categories Choose a category, for example: Cigarette brands. Same deal as ‘Rhyme’, first person to stuff up has to drink. Jack - Never have I ever Finish this sentence ‘Never have I ever…’ with whatever you want, and whoever has done it has to drink. It’s the perfect opportunity to embarrass your friends and get them more hammered. Queen - Make a rule Pretty self-explanatory, no? King - In the cup When a King is drawn, that person has to empty some of their drink into the King’s Cup. The person who draws the last King’s card has to chug the contents of the cup. Un-fucking-lucky. So there it is, are you up for the challenge?

YOUTH IN REVOLT

i fink u freeky Well, my good friend came back from university in Australia during the summer and brought along his two friends. We all met up at a bar one night. All three guys saw the same girl and were immediately taken aback by her. So, they agreed that the first to get her attention had dibs. My friend was the lucky one and after a couple of drinks he came over and tells me he was going back to her’s. So I was left at the bar with the two guys who I’d just met. After 2-3 hours I got a call from my friend and it and sounded like he had been crying. He asked if I was still at the bar and that said he was going to cab it over. Once he got to the bar he told us what had happened. They were having sex when the girl stuck a finger up his ass. He was really shocked but kind of went along with it because he was quite drunk and happy to please her, hoping that it wouldn’t last long. Then she stuck another one in. This time, my friend starts shitting himself, quite badly. He freaks out and starts to cry. Apparently she was totally chill about it, calmed him down and told him to take a shower in her bathroom. He does that. But, when he comes out, he sees the girl on the bed rubbing his shit all over her body. My friend had clearly sobered up by now and it clicks that she probably has some sort of poo fetish and that she knew how this situation would unravel. That’s what I call one shitty situation. - A shitty situation I was sober at a comic-sci-fi convention in southeast US. It was 2 am. A very intoxicated man in a skunk costume flipped me off and motioned me over. We talked for a while. He said “I’m calling a cab to pick you up at your hotel room.” Later that night I went to his house and we had sex for hours in his roommate’s bed. His roommate had a chihuahua that kept jumping onto the bed. Next day I left and never saw him again. - Doggy style I’m not usually a footballer type girl, but I met a guy out at a club early last year who, from that moment on, pursued me like I’d hadn’t been pursued since high school. He knew all the right things to say and never let me pay. Once we were filling up at a petrol station, and he came out after paying, with a Kinder Surprise he’d bought for me. On our third date we stayed in and drank with his roommates, I tried to keep up with them. I’m quite petite and hadn’t eaten and I was trying to drink as much as these three large men. What was I thinking? Anyway, eventually he led me away from the others and upstairs where we began to make out. My head was spinning and I couldn’t think straight but I just went with it because I didn’t know what else to do. At first it was fun, the alcohol allowed me to forget my inhibitions and let loose. Half way through having sex I began to sober up though, and started thinking about how little I really knew about this person, “Wait.” I said and he stopped …. Quickly followed by “Don’t worry.” And he didn’t. After it was over I cried but I made sure he didn’t see. He pulled out some Speed and offered me a line and I accepted, I subtly messaged a friend to pick me up and when they did he kissed me passionately at the door. We spoke a few times after that but I knew it was over. - Winning goal I slept with this guy a few times that I’d met on a dating site. He seemed pretty boring and average but then when we were having sex he would spit in my face. We’d discussed it beforehand and I’d agreed to it but then when he did it, it was just so gross. Once it went intoW my eyeball, so I never called him again because I decided that I didn’t want to be having the kind of sex where you let strangers spit in your eyeballs! - Slag Are you freeky? YOUTH IN REVOLT

By Olivia Mroz

Isolated Heroes latest A/W collection 2012 “Cyber Barbiez” Sticking to the brand’s tribal roots and infusing technically advanced prints with traditional African fabrics, the collection holds a strong fantasy element; mixing futurist alien graphics, caricature prints and neo-tribal witch-doctor fabrics. The collection merges the ancient with the modern with illustrative embroidery, over-sized silhouettes and vivid clashing colours transcending into a collection of wearable pieces with a distinct street wear feel. This collection surrounds the idea of “The end of the outside world” and focuses on the remaining survivors of this futuristic tribe, where Ghetto Goths and Cyber Barbies have taken over. The film was shot with basically no budget; it works with vibe of the brand. Isolated Heroes wanted the fashion film to have a really fresh and raw style of filming and to reflect the positive, youthful nature of the label. This is why they decided to throw a big party rather than do anything superficial or scripted. The fashion film is a very natural flow of events and follows four main characters, from working in their mundane day-jobs to attending a big warehouse rave at night. The film challenges the perceptions of the British public and the ideas around the way people dress. Using street cast models and non-conformist characters, we had each character dressed head-to-toe in Isolated Heroes and filmed them on hand held cameras while they walked through the streets of Dundee to their work places, capturing public reactions to seeing people dressed like this in the middle of the day. The warehouse party scene accumulates the brand’s ethos of optimistic clothing and captures the Isolated Heroes ideal customer. They invited 150 people to attend a big secret warehouse party and filmed the whole thing! We hope you enjoy the film as much as YIR did! Watch the film to see the collection. PLAY The best of 2012 - Keith Nallawalla

Hype

Some of you may agree with me, some of you may not, but I think we can all agree that 2012 was a big year for multi-platform games and sequels. I hope you have all enjoyed my gaming reviews, I can’t wait to see happens in the gaming world in 2013! This year will be hard to beat. So without further ado here’s the Y.I. R top ten games of 2012 (In no particular order) - The Walking Dead: A Telltale Games Series - Borderlands 2 - Orcs Must Die 2 - Cry 3 - Halo 4 - Mass Effect 3 - Assassins Creed 3 - Diablo 3 - Pokemon Black / White 2 - New Super Mario Bros. U

In the new year we will be adding a new regular contributor to our team who will be filling us in on all her beauty secrets. She’s full of wisdom and knows a bunch of stuff about clean skin and good coverage. Oh and did we mention she’s absolutely beautiful too? Well she is, there, we said it. Anyway, this facial is one we’ve learnt from her. Start by using your regular cleanser to remove any dirt and oil from your skin, use a gentle exfoliating cream to remove any dead skin, white sugar also works, legit. Boil some water using a kettle and use it to fill your bathroom sink, position your head above the water and put a towel over your head so you get as much of steam as possible. This opens your pores and removes any dirt that has buried its self deep within them. When you feel like you’ve been under there for enough time (try not to pass out) remove the towel and drain the water. Grab some coffee! Any coffee will do! Add a little water to it so it becomes ‘mushy’ but not runny. Cover your entire face with and leave it on for 6-10 minutes. After removing the coffee from your face your face will feel a lot cleaner and smoother, you’re welcome. Don’t forget to moisturise.

Summer and the new year are here and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than to get yourself a fresh new pair of roller skates. Available online from Urban Outfitters, this modern take on an old school favourite by Moxi Lolly is so fresh. Can’t you just picture yourself rolling along on a summers day, ice cream in hand, shades on and tunes pumping? Absolute bliss. Get in before they sell out, $299 a pop.

They’re back! Remember those cute, fluffy, gremlinesque toys that said the darndest things and were always hungry, for your finger no less? Well they’re back with a vengeance and will soon be on every shelve of every toy store and in every room of every kid (and every big kid) worldwide once again. Love them or hate them, they’ve made a comeback like no other. Prices vary, but they’re available at Toys ‘R’ Us, Big W, Kmart and similar retailers. Grab one before they disappear again!

For some time now I’ve required assistance of the spectacle variety, and for a long time I’ve dreaded the task of picking out new frames, but not any more. Boonlook.com has heaps of different options that you wouldn’t find in your normal optometrist, glasses store or pharmacist. If you’re a fashion-conscious, vision-impaired person like myself, you not only want something that helps you avoid the embarrassment of running into a closed glass door or holding up the line at McDonald’s because no matter how hard you squint you can’t quite read the menu, but something that also compliments your unique style too. Bonlook has every fashion preference covered from retro, sophisticated and kooky to chic, plus they are super affordable!

I know I have well and truly exhausted every opportunity I’ve had to endorse this book, but now it’s a motion picture! If you haven’t seen The Perks of Being a Wallflower yet, I have to question, why? The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of the few movies I can stand up wholeheartdely say does the novel justice. An extremely moving story, of which I don’t want to give away (even though I probably already have done so in previous issues), it is a must see that you can find for a bargain on Amazon.com

Do you love things that are a bit quirky? A bit gimmicky? Does finding something in a shop that’s just that right amount of cutesiness and wit make you weak at the knees? Do you allow yourself to be lured to the counter to buy it even though you really don’t need it and you might never use it? If you answered yes to all of the above, I’m sorry but this one’s for you. Introducing the Camera Lens Mug. Another Urban Outfitters find, this mug is crazy fun and a must have for any budding photographer. Just look at it! $28

“New Years Absolutions” By Made Stuchbery

New Years Eve already? Yet again it is that time of year when we all drink far too much white wine and fry in the sunshine because we’re too hung over to move from our position on the grass in the front yard. The time of year where pouncing on an unsuspecting underage boy at the local pub for a, umm, special midnight kiss does not mean that you will be kicked out and removed from the premises. The one time of year it is socially acceptable to drink Passion Pop. There is something rather sweaty, sticky and special about New Years Eve and the dull thudding sense of shame and pain that comes with the dawning of New Years Day. The New Year always brings such promise: this is the year that I will finally lose weight, the year I will learn French and stop biting my nails, the year I will stop murdering children. You know, the usual. These and more are typical of the usual blithe and, to be brutally honest, rather boring resolutions that we all conjure up in a panic around the 31st of December. It is equally as traditional to abandon these ‘resolutions’ of ours a mere month or two into the aforementioned ‘New Year.’ Which brings me neatly to my main two points: One, when does the ‘New Year’ stop being so and simply morphs into ‘this year;’ and two, why are we constantly on a quest to further improve ourselves? Now, although I have no idea what the answer to my first question is (although I strongly suspect the answer is mid-February), I can hopefully shed some light on the more tricky concept of my second musing. Why is it that we choose this time of year to dream of a new ‘me?’ Perhaps it is the guilt and lethargy that comes a week or two after Christmas; a day spent cramming every orifice with as much of your mum’s home cooking and pickling ourselves in as much alcohol as humanly possible. Perhaps it is that moment when you no longer fit into your summery denim shorts, that sure as hell fit last year but seemed to have shrunk in the wash, despite the fact that they’ve been sitting on the top shelf of the wardrobe since April. (I’m getting slightly off topic here. I’ve never even owned denim shorts) Why do we all bother to make ‘New Years Resolutions’ when we are all painfully aware that they will be tossed aside and abandoned with relish by the time Autumn rolls around? So this year, my only ‘resolution’ consists of one radical idea: to NOT make

any resolutions whatsoever. I am calling it, ‘Made’s New Years Absolutions.’ And I urge you readers to embrace this idea too. We can be the children of the revolution and make a decent change in the world. Or at least, purge our lives of a little bit of potential disappointment when we discover that we are not as committed and dedicated as we would like to ultimately be. To give my brainchild a little bit of substance, I googled the definition of the word, ‘absolution.’ Apparently, ‘absolution’ is the act of freeing from blame or guilt; a release from consequences, obligations, or penalties. Which sounds pretty darn good to me. Absolution basically seems like living in a constant state of inhibition-less freedom without being constantly drunk. Which is ironic, really, considering that my favourite brand of Vodka is ‘Absolute.’ But I digress. History dictates that any previous attempts at committing to my New Years Resolutions have always failed in a spectacular manner. There was that year that I decided to learn to play golf, but all I learnt to do is to run fast when you accidentally clock your little brother on the head with your club. I once decided to brush up on my Japanese Kanji writing skills, and the calligraphy set that I bought at age 14 still sits, completely wrapped in plastic, on the bookshelf in my mother’s study. I could go on but the year is rapidly drawing to a close and I must complete this article before the year is out. My main point I guess is this: I believe that we spend so much time focusing on the trivial, materialistic concept of abiding by a list of ‘resolutions’ for the new year that we truly lose sight of what a new year is all about. It is a time in your life that is unique and somewhat special. There is nothing quite as magical in my opinion as the promise of a brand new year. Think of the birthdays to be had, the holidays that will gradually roll around and relive you of work pressures. The seasons change, and once again we get to watch Summer wane and give way to Autumn. We see the rains roll in around June, and we wave them goodbye in the Spring. There are fresh books to be bought for the start of a new school year and friendships reunited once more. Granted, the new year does mean tax-time and car registration but, for illustrative and procrastinative purposes I’m going to gloss over that. If you are going to make any conscious decisions to better your life in the New Year, I suggest you make only one: become absolute. Absolve yourself of any guilt, greed and sense of responsibility that comes with sticking to a new diet or depriving yourself of the simple pleasure of laying in bed on a Sunday morning when you’re forcing yourself to run a million miles on the treadmill at the local gym. Make it your goal to spend 2013 living your life without responsibility, consequence, blame or guilt. I know I am. And I strongly suspect that this year might just prove to be one of the most freeing, enlightening and fun years of your life to date. A very Happy New Years to you all. Now let’s get drunk off life. Or vodka, if you prefer something a little less cheesy. From the desk of Made Stuchbery.
