Reflections from the Board President on YOBC’s 25th Anniversary Our family has been involved with YOBC since 1997. During that time YOBC has expanded from 110 students to over 320 today. What has enabled a classical music organization to do that? There are many reasons for it; these are four that I see as critical:

 Our mission, which is, “YOBC creates opportunities for young musicians to achieve artistic excellence

through enriching classical music experiences.” The YOBC staff and board regularly reflect on this mission and endeavor to make sure that everything we do remains true to it.  YOBC is participant-focused – we consistently try to create experiences that make the student experience superior. The Board doesn’t come first, the staff doesn’t come first, and the parents don’t come

first. Making the educational experience rich, rewarding, and fun for our students is what is most important to us.  Music education benefits students beyond just the ability to play and perform – our conductors as well as our participants and their families see that. I’ve seen those benefits with our children and believe that participating in a superior-level classical music ensemble benefits each YOBC member.  YOBC is innovative. We’ve continually sought ways to strengthen the music education programs that we provide for our students through Crossing Classical Boundaries concerts like the 25th Anniversary concert, sectionals, our SIC program for school districts where music programs have been reduced, collaboration with the Philadelphia Orchestra, our first-ever summer camp this year … the list goes on. The drive to continually improve what we do and how we do it sets us apart. The 25th Anniversary is not just a time to look back. Looking forward, we need to and will adapt, innovate, and strengthen what we do. Our Board has just voted on an updated strategic plan which will guide us over the next 3–5 years. We hope that many of the people who joined us for our 25th Anniversary Gala will able to attend the 30th Anniversary celebration – wherever that may be held.

2016–17 YOBC Initiatives

This season, YOBC staff has implemented new strategies to improve the effectiveness of student recruitment. YOBC’s Wind Symphony invited student musicians from the community to join an open rehearsal. Almost 20 visiting musicians participated in the rehearsal and a festive reception. New this year, YOBC’s summer camp program will include two week-long band camps and a one-week string camp at Bucks County Community College. YOBC artistic staff have created the curriculum and will teach both camps.

YOBC offers students and alumni opportunities to grow and expand their horizons beyond our standard programs. Opportunities include internships and student initiatives. This year, YOBC students Rachel Schodowski and Isaac Ashton, YOBC alumna Michelle Davis, and TCNJ student Nick Parent volunteer as interns each week. This summer, a young professional from the community will be serving as an intern for YOBC’s summer camps. These positions are structured and require commitment on the part of YOBC staff as well as the intern. All interns are supervised and given feedback on their work. YOBC also supports individual student initiatives. This year, YOBC student Charly Avril approached us with a proposal for creating Positive Notes, an organization designed to support our Students in Concert program by securing musical instrument donations. Charly has established a website, newsletter, and student advisory board and collected about 10 instruments to date. YOBC staff provides guidance, administrative support, and oversight for the project, but Charly works independently to build the organization and fulfill its mission.

2016–17 Master Classes With the Philadelphia Orchestra

David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, was YOBC’s Artist-in-Residence for the 2016–17 season. In addition to his violin master class in February 2017, Mr. Kim helped arrange master classes with several of his colleagues from the Philadelphia Orchestra for YOBC students and community guests:

Hai-Ye Ni, principal cello, offered a master class to YOBC cellists, including six from our Advanced Division ensembles who performed for the group. Jennifer Montone, principal horn, tutored YOBC French horn students and community guests. Ms. Montone will be YOBC’s guest artist for a spring 2018 concert. YOBC students had several additional opportunities for master class enrichment: a workshop with new music collective Wooden Cities and a workshop with Ken Megan of the US Coast Guard Woodwind Quintet.

Bristol Borough The borough program ran through April 26. A spring concert was held May 11 at Bristol High School for all the instrumental students and featured the SIC students. Bristol Township Guest clinician Dr. Quincy Hilliard spent two days with our SIC students, rehearsing and inspiring them before presenting the annual Honors Band Concert on March 11. The concert is not restricted to SIC students, but they were a majority of the participants. Dr. Hilliard also worked for an hour with students at Mill Creek Elementary School in Bristol Township.

Morrisville Morrisville string students presented a recital for family and friends on February 13 that was well attended, including some of the students’ teachers. The recital featured solos and small ensembles. Nine students signed up to attend the YOBC-sponsored Philadelphia Orchestra trip in April.
