GUEST EDITOR How's cross country season going? We sure hope you ran hard, got dirty, made some new friends, and impressed yourself a little bit. I have always loved cross country season for the ability to impress myself by trying and doing things I've never thought possible before. Those times when coach tells you to run up the longest and steepest hill... 10 times in a row. When you're out on a long run in the rain and wind. Or the worst, finally taking off your warm-ups to race on a cold and windy day. We do all of these things we never thought we could! And everyday is different, too, just like the trails we run. Each turn we wind around and each hill we climb offer surprising obstacles to face and new views to enjoy. These are the victories

that I enjoy the most. What's do you enjoy the most about cross country season? Lila Crowley of Colorado loves the natural peace and quiet of running on trails. Check out our feature on her and find out what to do if you take a wrong turn on the course. And while I'm thinking about it, our Youth Runner cover athlete, Matti Erickson has a story of getting lost and finding his way in a trail running race, too. Turns out getting off course once in a while and being a champion runner go hand in hand. And while most of us are enjoying a rest at the end of the season and planning out our holiday breaks (check out our holiday gift and gadget guide), a group of top Youth Runners are off to Nationals. See you on the course, Ian Kesterson

YR BLOGGER & DISTANCE RUNNER My name is Ciara Martinez and I had an amazing experience with Nike South this year. I drove up the night before with my team and was very nervous especially because I knew how big of a race Nike South was. My coach put our team in the Elite division, which was even scarier. This was my second race back since I fractured my ankle. I just wanted to get a good time and run in, I didn't care about place too much. I started the race out way too fast because of my adrenaline and the rush that went through my body. When I started to slow down to go back to my pace, a group of girls passed me and each of them I had beaten before which frustrated me. That caused me to not run a very smart race. I felt like I could've ran a better race but I did give it my all so I wasn't disappointed.
I also got a line of really bad blisters from my spikes, which was probably the only bad part. I still ended up getting 34th and beating many other runners, but that discouraged me, and didn't make my comeback an easy one. I proved even more people wrong that I would comeback and still be fast. The course is always such a pleasure to run on. It is so beautiful and in the woods. It feels like a pretty fast course as well. I was very proud of myself for pushing through all my pain and having a good race. Whatever happens during a race my suggestion is to stick to what you do best and run YOUR race!

Q&A WITH MATTI: We met Matti after he won his race at the Nike Portland XC Meet in September. YR: Describe the middle school race...the difficulties, your race strategy, did the race go as planned? A: There were more runners than I’m used to so getting out fast and out of the masses was a priority. I did not know any of the other runners so the plan was to get in the lead group and see what the pace was. I quite often run with older runners so I am use to a faster pace than what we ran at. I tucked into fourth and with 400 or so meters to go started shifting gears. The race went pretty much as planned with a sprint to the finish. How about the hale bales and the whoop de doos? Like or dislike? The bales and whoop de doos were a good way to break up the race on a relatively flat course. I do hurdles on the track so am use to jumping over obstacles. Tell us more about yourself, when did you start running and how did you get into it? My first running race was in Trail BC when I was ten. I entered all the events and did quite well. The reason I entered the meet was because my grade three teacher, Mr. Manson, could not catch me at lunch during a game of tag. He did track in Calgary quite a few years ago and suggested I try running in competition. I ran four running races that day with the first event being the 60m hurdles. I had never done hurdles but it seemed like a fun event. I was quite nervous and felt better when the other runners looked more nervous than me. I won the race in a track record. 10 | NOV/DEC 2016
What is the worst racing experience you've had and how did you recover from it?
Running can be hard, what inspires or motivates you every day?
My dad took me to a track meet in Maple Ridge, which is an eight hour drive from Nelson. When I went to put my running shorts on for the first race I realized I had forgotten them. My dad took off to find a pair and returned just in time. I also ran in the Kaslo Sufferfest last year and got off course for several minutes. Not quite lost but almost. I was able to backtrack and figured out were I went wrong.
I don’t train every day but when I do run I run hard which gives me confidence in races. My dad and coach are always talking about good runners so I figure if I keep trying hard maybe one day they will be talking about me.
Tell us about your hometown and what is special about it.
Who was your favorite Olympian or event from Rio? The men’s 400m was incredible. It’s not very often a world record is set from the outside lane. Andre Degrase was good to watch. He is very confident and respectful.
YOU HAVE TO HAVE FUN RUNNING OR YOU WON'T ENJOY IT.
My hometown is Nelson BC. We don’t have any industry here so the air and water are very clean (I drink out of the lake). We are surrounded by mountains and trees so hill running and skiing are part of what most kids do in the area. Nelson is known as a great place to grow up and live and even a better town to visit. Nelson is one of the top ten best little towns in North America for arts and culture.
What are your goals for XC and for Track come spring?
I would like to try to break the two minute mark in the 800m. I would also like to make the BC midget track team for the Legion nationals in Manitoba. Role models? My Dad
What are your PR's - Best Times in the events you run?
Best advice your coach has given you?
I run all the distances from 100m to 2000m on the track and whatever distance the cross country is. My 300m PR is 39.17, 200m hurdle is 27.11, 800m is 2:06.54, 1200m is 2:23.61. I don’t try for times in cross country. Rather I run and try to win regardless of time. (B.C. has different distances in their track meets than the U.S.)
Run your own race. Any advice for other Youth Runners? You have to have fun running or you won’t enjoy it.

LILA CROWLEY
AGE: 11 SCHOOL: 6th Grade at Goddard Middle School in Littleton, CO CLUB: Parker Panthers
SAM GEHRKE 12 | NOV/DEC 2016
LILA CROWLEY Lila runs for her middle school and competes in some local races. As a 6th grader, she broke the course record for girls during the Middle School Fund Run, and broke the course record for women at the FallFest 5K to raise money for Autism. She also loves running on trails. “It feels free when you are running in the mountains because you are out on your own and there is no noise except for the sound your feet makes on the trail. It is really pretty and quiet. It is peaceful – even during a race.” Recently Lila ran the Beaver Creek Oktoberfest 5K and came in first overall (for women and men). She said that, “It was a huge learning experience because I
was leading the race from the beginning and took the wrong turn. Once I realized I had run into a dead end, I had to turn around and run through the entire crowd to get back in front. Since the path was so narrow, I ran through tall grass and bushes on the side of the trail to pass everyone.”
TRAIL RUNNER AND RACER
When you got to the top of the mountain (around mile 4.5) you could see the ocean and the city and the views are amazing. “I love the beauty – it was one of the most beautiful courses I have ever seen. It was challenging but not so much that it ruined the fun of the run. I came in first for women in the Open and am super excited to compete in the Invitational next year.”
"IT FEELS FREE WHEN YOU ARE RUNNING IN THE MOUNTAINS BECAUSE YOU ARE OUT ON YOUR OWN."
Her favorite race so far has been the Dipsea in San Francisco. The Dipsea is the oldest trail race in America. The 7.4-mile course from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach is considered to be one of the most beautiful courses in the world. You start out by running up 648 steps, and then you are climbing up a trail in the Muir Wood.
Lila’s favorite color is Turquoise, likes Skiing, & the Hunger Game Series. Her advice to other girl runners is, “When it hurts while running, think of the finish and how good it feels when you are done. Never stop believing in yourself.”
"NEVER STOP BELIEVING IN YOURSELF"

Our favorite time of the year is getting back into the routine of school, fall cross country and road runs. What’s cool about XC is that every one is competing as a team but also doing your best to beat your own time from the week before. Plus it’s a great way to meet new friends and experience real team spirit. Riding home from a meet in a van full of tired muddy runners and telling race stories is one of the best ways to make friends for life. Good Luck to everyone at your District, State, Regional, or National competitions in November and December. If you see any of the Youth Runner Crew please say hello. Have some photos you’d like featured from your last mud run, cross country race, or 5k you can email to editor@youthrunner. com or #youthrunner on your instagram posts. 19

RICHARD BOLT
TEAM USA MEN’S JUNIOR MOUNTAIN RUNNING TEAM JUST MISSED A BRONZE MEDAL AT WORLD MOUNTAIN RUNNING
BY RICHARD BOLT We’ve been following the Junior Mountain Running Team since its beginning in 2002 and it gets more exciting every year. To make the team you first need to apply and if you’re selected you’ll get to compete at the World competition. This year it was in Sapareve Banya, Bulgaria on September 11th. The course was all uphill, meaning 20 | NOV/DEC 2016
you start at the bottom and ascend 2500 to the top of the course without stopping. Next year it will be an all downhill course. Our Junior Men’s Team just missed getting a bronze medal. The team included an all-star line up of Phillip Rocha, Joe Benson, Edward Herrera, & Ben Butler.
PHILLIP ROCHA Philip has the fastest 5k cross country PR on the team with a 14:32 and a 3200 track PR of 8:59.42. He was the top junior for the US at the BUPA Great Edinburgh Cross Country Challenge in Scotland and was also 2nd overall at Footlocker Cross Country Nationals. Phillip has also been a three-time USATF cross country champion. He now attends the University of Colorado and competes for the Buffaloes as part of the cross country squad.
EDWARD HERRERA Eduardo graduated from Madera South High School and has a 4:04.99 personal best in the mile as well as being 5th at Nike Cross Country Nationals in 2016. His 5km cross country PR is 14:49 and spends some of his training time in Mammoth Lakes, CA. He also attends the University of Colorado and is on their cross country team.
BEN BUTLER JOSEPH BENSON Joe attends Timpanogos High School in Orem, Utah and has a 5km cross country personal best of 14:55 and a 1600 meter track personal best of 4:20. Joe was 4th at the state cross country championships in 2015 and 16th at Nike Cross Country Nationals.
INTERESTED IN MAKING THE 2017 TEAM?
Ben finished 9th at the World Mountain Running Championships last year in Wales and is the only returning junior team member. Ben was also a member of 2016 US Team that competed at the 2016 Pan American Cross Country Championships in Venezuela. Ben was the 2014 and 2015 Colorado 3A Cross Country State Champion. He finished 23rd at Nike Cross Country Nationals and has a personal best of 14:56 in the 5k and a 4:18 1600 meter track time at altitude.
For athletes interested in the Junior Mountain Running Team you need to be between the ages of 16-19 on December 31, 2017. The junior teams include a maximum of four runners with the top three scoring. Junior team members are not required to compete at the Qualifier races although it is encouraged to help provide them with mountain running experience. Junior runners should fill out the application form at USMRT.COM, including personal bests and noteworthy performances.

He took 2nd at the Free Spirit Invitational and was chosen the "Athlete of the Month" in October for the LA Jets. Jordan's biggest wish is to meet his idol Usain Bolt some day. He loves watching videos of Usain and is inspired to be a great competitor just like he is. Besides running he enjoys playing soccer, kickball, basketball and handball.
