LETTER FROM THE
GUEST EDITOR I first got serious about running at a pretty young age – maybe 5th or 6th grade. At the time, I didn’t yet understand why I enjoyed it so much; after all it was painful and hard for a skinny kid like me; but I never once considered quitting and I loved it then and still do. It’s only been in the last couple of years that I started to figure out what kept me going and always looking forward to race day; it was the friendships and the people I met that drove me. Some of my very best memories and experiences have come from running were with people just like me, and it has become apparent that the challenges and rewards of my youth running career will last a lifetime. Never lose that drive to “keep the guy behind
EDITOR'S NOTES 6 | JULY/AUG 2016
you right where he is – and if there’s another guy in front of you; go get em!” That’s just an unbelievable feeling that’s hard to explain. Then at the finish line – give it all away! Give the credit for your success to all those in front of you pulling, and the dudes behind you pushing – for it’s those runners who make you great. And no matter where you finish – each of you is great; remember that. My final advice to all the young grasshoppers is to “run through the finish line“; because for runners and all the great ones…there is no end of the road, just your next chance to be a great person. These are the lessons and convictions of my life so far; take them for what they’re worth. - Hayden "The Bruce" Scott Twitter: @Haydfontaine_97
Hayden was on the cover of Youth Runner in the 7th grade & we’ve followed his many successes. He wrote his letter from the cadet dorms of US Air Force Academy, he is hoping to run for Team Army after he graduates from high school next year.

YR REPORTER & DISTANCE RUNNER I started running when I was 5 years old in Albuquerque New Mexico with Cougar Track Club. I moved when I was 8 years old to Maple Valley, Washington and joined Speed Unlimited in Bellevue. I have been an All-American six times in cross country and track and have set personal bests of 5:11 in the 1500m and 2:32 in the 800m. My most memorable race was when I finished 4th at Nationals at the USATF Cross Country Championships when I was only 7 years old. This race showed me that if I worked hard, I could accomplish the goals I set for myself and it also gave me confidence to be brave while competing at a big race. I love running so much and I hope to be a professional runner in the future and hopefully will get the chance to run for the University of Oregon. I love being a Youth Runner Reporter because I get to travel and go to the professional meets and interview professional runners, the best high school runners, and also
kids at Junior Olympics. I love interviewing professional runners because every once and awhile I get the chance to get their autographs and get to talk to runners that I always have dreamt about meeting. I get so inspired while interviewing that it makes me want to work even harder at accomplishing my goals. The professional athletes give younger runners tips and they encourage us to work hard, but to always have fun and enjoy the sport. I am sure that future Youth Runner Magazine reporters will enjoy the experiences I have had and will be able to bring their own experiences to other youth runners and will give them memories to last a lifetime.

LEXY
8TH GRADE DISTANCE RUNNER
HALLADAY 8TH GRADER LEXY HALLADAY RAN THE MILE DURING PE IN THE 6TH GRADE AND DISCOVERED THAT RUNNING WAS PRETTY FUN! SINCE THEN SHE HAS WON SOME SERIOUS RACES AND EVEN COMPETED AGAINST COLLEGE AND PROFESSIONAL RUNNERS. LEXY DESCRIBES HERSELF AS DRIVEN, HAS YOGURT AND JUICE BEFORE A BIG RACE, AND LOVES READING HARRY POTTER BOOKS.
Q&A WITH LEXY: YOUTH RUNNER: Can you describe again any strategy you had or what you were feeling coming into the Open Women's 1500m at the PTF? (only one other 8th grader was in this race, it was mostly college and professional athletes) LEXY: The strategy I had for this race was to either stick with the front pack or run my split times.
I didn’t really think about it. It was a good experience to have tougher competition. How do you prepare for race day? Usually an easy run the day before with some strides to make sure I am loosened up. I try not to think about the race too much the night before. I try to get to bed early so I am rested and ready to race. Did you do anything different for this race? Nope. Were you nervous?
Did you expect to win that race?
In this race I felt confident and excited! I had never run the 1500 meter before. There have been some races where I was pretty nervous. Running at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in the fastest mile heat I had some nerves before the race. Knowing there were some of fastest high school girls in the nation in my heat I was a bit nervous.
Yes, I go into every race with the goal to win.
Tell us about your training in the last month.
How did it feel the first time you moved up to run with college women?
My middle school track season ended the last weekend in May, so I had a week recovery and then I started pre-

paring for the Portland Track Festival. I did my long runs and recovery runs on my own, but for the track-interval workouts I trained with my Team Idaho teammates and Coach Tim Severa. Will you be competing in the Junior Olympics or any other meets this summer? No, I am taking 2-3 weeks off and then I will start preparing for my first season of High School Cross Country. I am really excited to train and compete at the high school level. What about high school, will you be running with the team before school starts? Yes, I will be going to a College running camp in July (BYU) and then we have a High School camp the last part of July and the season will start right after that. What about your first race-run ever and how did you get started in running? Kid's run, middle school team? When I was in 6th grade I ran the mile in PE and did it in 5:40. I was wearing

court shoes, jeans and it was around the field. I went home and told my Dad how fast I ran the mile and he was really impressed. I decided running was pretty fun. What other sports have you participated in or still do now? I played soccer and basketball. Up until last year I played on an ECNL U14 girls’ soccer team for FC NOVA. This was the top team in our State. Soccer was a great stepping-stone to where I

am now. I also played school basketball and on a club basketball team, Boise Flite. I have decided to focus on my love, which is running. What runners to you most aspire to be like or look up to? Galen Rupp! He’s an amazing runner. Watching him run and seeing his accomplishments really stand out to me. I also like Steve Prefontaine, I like how he gave it all every race, he never held back. What keeps you motivated to train and race? What drives you to win? I love pushing my limits to see what I can do. How fast can I run? How many seconds can I take off my mile time, 1,600 time, 800 time! I love competing against high caliber athletes and seeing how I do against them. I have a lot more to experience and I’m excited to see how I do.
How do you stay positive after a bad workout or a disappointing race? I try to keep things in perspective, some days or races you just aren’t in your top form. When I feel like that sometimes you just have to grind it out for the win. I know I can’t train or race at the top all the time, I will have moments where I’m tired or not as strong. But when I am strong and I am running incredible…it’s these moments that make running all worth it! Has there been any races where you got boxed in or made a mistake that cost you a win? What did you learn from it? When I raced at New Balance Indoor Nationals in the mile against the top High School athletes in the Nation (Kate Murphy, Katie Rainsburger) I learned a lot about placement and pace in the pack. Up to that point I had never really had to run in the pack. After the first lap I was in last place bringing up the back of the pack. I wasn’t ready for the speed they ran the first lap. I worked my way up to 3rd place about ¾ of the way through and ended up placing 6th in the heat. I ran a 4:48 at that race which was a PR for me. It was a blur! It’s experiences like this that will make me stronger! Best advice anyone has given you? I’ve learned from my mom that I have a shot to win every race I participate in. Never go into a race to come in second. Regardless of the outcome, I know I will learn something from every race experience.

MIGUEL PANTOJAS
ONE OF PUERTO RICO'S FASTEST KIDS!
"I WANT TO RUN THERE." 12 | JULY/AUG 2016
ADVICE FROM THE 11-YEAR-OLD RUNNER/JUMPER
MEET MIGUEL! MIGUEL PANTOJAS, AGE 11, LIANEROS T&F CLUB BASILIO MILAN HERNANDEZ SCHOOL, PUERTO RICO
Miguel competes in events from the 400m to the 1200m run & the long jump. When he was seven years old he saw a video about the Olympics and in his mind he would say, “I want to run there.” That’s when he told his mom and dad that he wanted to do track & field. He also participates in Softball and Soccer. Last year his dad took him to see the adidas Grand Prix in New York. He got backstage and had his photo taken with Olympians Usain Bolt and David Rudisha. Plus they gave Miguel their autograph. That sounds like an awesome experience! In Puerto Rico the distances are different. Instead of the 800m they run a 600m and they run a 1200m vs. a 1500m. This year his best times in the 11-12 year old races were: 400 Meter Dash 1000 Meter Run 1200 Meter Run Long Jump
1:00.95 3:12.84 3:52.88* 13-05.50
*1200 time converts to a 4:48 1500m
During June Miguel is resting, playing video games, getting into the pool, and having fun with family and friends. Then It’s back to some training again!

IT'S
already July and if’ you’re still competing say hello to us in Houston at the AAU Nationals and in Sacramento at USATF Junior Olympics. If you’re putting in some mileage to prepare for cross country this fall make sure you stay in touch with your coach or at least log your miles so you can compare notes once your official practice starts. Also, make sure you’re staying hydrated out in the heat and put some sunscreen in your backpack. If you’re taking a break from the track we’re hoping that your summer will be full of fun activities. WHO TO WATCH TEENAGERS TO WATCH AT THE
OLYMPIC TRIALS IN GYMNASTICS AND SWIMMING IT’S COMMON FOR TEENAGERS TO MAKE THE OLYMPIC TEAM. BUT IN TRACK & FIELD IT’S A LOT TOUGHER BECAUSE SOME OF THE BEST TRACK ATHLETES HAVE ALREADY TURNED PROFESSIONAL. THIS YEAR WE THINK THAT SOME OF THE TEENAGERS WILL MAKE THE TEAM. COMMENT AND LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK AND THEN CHEER THEM ON WHEN THEY GO TO RIO FOR THE OLYMPICS.

TEENAGERS TO WATCH
SYDNEY MCLAUGHLIN
is a two-time Gatorade state track and field athlete and also holds the prep record in the 400 Meter Hurdles.
VASHTI CUNNINGHAM
is our first pick to make the Olympic Team. We watched her win the High Jump at the World Indoor Championships against the best and the week before at the USA Nationals. Vashti was a high school senior this year. Be sure to watch the high jump.
TAYLOR MCLAUGHLIN
On the same day as his sister's record, McLaughlin shattered the U Michigan 400 Meter Hurdle record with a time of 46.42. Â In his first outdoor season, he placed 5th at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships. YOUTHRUNNER.COM | 21
TEENAGERS TO WATCH
WHAT IS THE OLYMPIC TRIALS, ANYWAY?
ALEXA EFRAIMSON is a clear contender in the 1500 Meter Run; her season best of 4:03.39 places her 4th in the US.
CANDACE HILL
We were there at the Brooks PR Invitational last year when she set a new high school record in the 100 Meter Dash and soon after turned professional. Candace is real and she has a shot at the Olympics.
Great question! To make it on an Olympic Team you first have to qualify by competing at the Trials. The top three athletes in each event that have achieved an “A” standard performance go to Rio for the Olympics. If you were trying to make your state meet you would first have to qualify at districts. Same thing except now it’s the Olympics and the “Trials” is the name for the meet. There are lots of rules and exceptions. If only two athletes make the “A” standard then they may allow a “B” standard on the team.
KATE MURPHY
better known as "The Nation's Fastest Sophomore" has ran 4:14.26 in the 1500 Meter Run, the 6th fastest time for a US high school girl. This is going to be a tough race even though she has been doing really well leading up to the Trials. Can’t wait to see her race.

TEENAGERS TO WATCH
DONAVAN BRAZIER
blew the crowd away at the NCAA Championships winning the 800 Meter Run and he has since gone with Nike to become a pro athlete. YR picks him to go through to the Olympics.
CHRISTINA ARAGON
punched her ticket to the Trials at Portland Track Festival when she on the second section of the 1500 Meter Run in a time of 4:09.27, the 3rd fastest time in prep history.
NOAH LYLES MIKE NORMAN
is the California state record holder in the 200 Meter Dash and his time of 20.15 is the 3rd fastest time for a US Junior athlete.
blazes through the 100 Meter Dash before most of us can blink. He amazed us at the World Junior Championships and no doubt he will do the same at the Olympic Trials. He won the Arcadia Invitational 100m in 10.17, the 8th fastest time in prep history and the 200m in a time of 20.48.

REMEMBER THE GOAL COMING AUGUST 26TH
Youth Runner Bloggers Thea, Taitum, Faith, and Bree put some questions together for the cast of Remember the Goal. Some of these girls are first time runners and actresses and others have been running and acting since they were kids. They offer some great advice and talk about what it was like to be in a movie. Coming on August 26, this a new high school cross country movie called Remember the Goal. It’s about a girl’s team at a private Christian school. The female coach is fresh out of college with this being her first coaching job. She sets an ambitious goal for the team to win the state XC title, something never achieved in the history of their school, Orange Hills Academy. On their quest for state, they run into some challenges. Parents and Athletes don’t trust the new coach’s abilities and many personal challenges that are common to high school students come up. The Coach though has great wisdom for her young age and guides the girls in these situations teaching some life lessons along the way for Athletes, Parents, and Coaches that all of us can use. It’s a movie more than just about running. To read the full interview with the cast members, go to www.youthrunner.com

ASK A
COACH
ANSWERS FROM THE YOUTH RUNNER COACHES Advice about strides, improving mile times, and figuring out what mileage you should be running!
Q I’M A 12 YEAR OLD GIRL. AT THE MOMENT, MY BEST MILE TIME IS 6:20. I'D LIKE TO IMPROVE MY TIME. IN THE PERFECT WORLD, I WOULD LIKE TO BE UNDER 6 MINUTES. PLEASE HELP! ALSO, WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD TIME FOR MY AGE?
COACH MICK: You are doing fine and it
is important that you always enjoy the journey of gradual improvement. A good time for your age is gradual improvement. Don't worry about chasing times someone else makes up as "important." You should gradually work on slowly increasing your mileage, so you have a solid aerobic endurance base. I like my athletes to improve their 400m and 800m time before moving up to the mile. If you improve your strength by building an aerobic base, and you improve your speed in the 400 and 800, I think you are well positioned to transition to the mile. For mile pacing, you need to learn how to run even pace splits. For example, if you want to run 6:00 for the mile, you can practice how to run 1/4 mile pace 90 seconds. Have Fun! 26 | JULY/AUG 2016
Mick Grant: Youth Coach
Jordan Schillit: Professional Runner
Q WHAT ARE STRIDES AND WHY SHOULD I DO THEM?TEAM?
COACH JORDAN: Strides are a quick
'sprint' of about 100 meters (the straightaway length of an outdoor track). A stride is simply fast running that prepares your body for tough workouts and races. The reason we do strides is to work on speed! Strides make you a more efficient runner (so that you can keep getting faster and faster). Speed is key in EVERY RUNNING EVENT in track, so incorporating strides into your weekly routine is quite important. Check out more on Strides: news.youthrunner.com/news/ story/wacky-workouts-strides
"THE REASON WE DO STRIDES IS TO WORK ON SPEED! STRIDES MAKE YOU A MORE EFFICIENT RUNNER ."
Drew Wasmund: Cross Country Coach
Q I'M 13 AND GOING INTO HIGH SCHOOL THIS YEAR. I RAN A 5:31 MILE IN TRACK. WHAT MILEAGE SHOULD I BE RUNNING THIS SUMMER TO GET READY FOR MY HIGH SCHOOL CROSSCOUNTRY TEAM?
COACH DREW: There is no right mileage
for anyone. Some people perform better on lesser mileage, others on higher mileage. What I would say though, is that slow increases in mileage are generally safe. For example, when I was a high school coach, our freshman generally ran 25-30 miles a week in the summer. Sophomores 30-40. Juniors 40-50, and seniors 50-60. That's just to show you that it was a slow progression, not telling you to run that exact mileage by any means. How many miles a week have you been running the past six months? How about the past year or last summer? Let us know!
