LETTER FROM THE
thought I’d always be a JV runner. I’ve captured a national championship in college, even though people thought I wouldn’t compete in the NCAA. And I’m running with one of the finest clubs in the country, even though I went to a Division III college.
Every race on the track is the same for me. Starter’s arm goes up. “On your mark!” Everyone freezes. Crowd is silent. Pause. The same thought pops into my head as I toe the line… a thought that a competitor told me when I was a slow high school runner: “You’ll never be fast. I could beat you with football pads on,” he said.
Every race is my time to build off of what I did in the past; it’s my time to have an even better day than the last. It’s my time to search the unknown – run faster than I’ve ever run before, beat someone better than me, try a new trick, unleash a hidden kick, inspire someone, scare someone else, become a hero, or fall on the ground and gasp for air and finally think, “I don’t know how I just did that, but that was fun.”
GUEST EDITOR
Bang! My time to prove him wrong… Every. Single. Race. Every race is my shining moment, my time to prove all doubters that I’ve persevered with this sport. I’ve run faster than people expected. I’ve fought through adversity – through countless injuries – to run PRs every year for the past decade. I’ve captured a high school state championship, even though people
EDITOR'S NOTES 6 | JULY/AUG 2014
Next time you toe that starting line, get those positive thoughts flowing. The race is your time to show the world what you can do. It’s your time to run faster than you – or others – may think is possible. It’s your time to be a star. Your time to shine... Your time to be the fastest you can be. Best of luck, -Jordan

Give Running a Try Hi, my name is Fiona. I’m a sophomore in high school, and I’ve run varsity cross country and track and field for two years now. If you had told me two years ago that I would be a varsity runner, I never would have believed you. I started my freshman cross country season unable to finish a full 5k without stopping to walk and catch my breath. But I challenged myself and dedicated the time, and by the end of the season I had dropped 10 minutes from my first 5k time. Since then our cross country team has placed 2nd at states and I have qualified individually for states in both Indoor and Outdoor Track. But even with the team bonding, exploratory trail runs, and post-race hugs, running hasn’t always proven to be easy. Running is a test of character, and the first test is just getting out and going for a run. So even if you aren’t the fastest on your team or you don’t consider yourself a real runner, just go out and run. You’ll be amazed at what you can do.

e is a 10 year old sprinter on the West Coast Speed Track Club where he competes in the 100 meter, the 200 meter and the long jump. Besides being totally fast he also likes playing basketball, football, and starts his morning out with a heaping bowl of Cocoa Krispies He’s on a quest to make it back to nationals this year and see how his times stack up to other 10 year olds in the U.S. We thought you’d like to know more about Anthony so we asked him a few questions.
8 | JULY/AUG 2014
When Anthony is at the starting line he tries not to thing about anything, just relax
q & a with anthony: YR:First off, we are all wondering how you got into sprinting and what makes you so fast? Anthony: I got into sprinting when I learned that I was pretty fast and I saw Usain Bolt when he ran the 100m in the Olympics. Tell us about your workouts and your training leading into regionals and nationals. My coach had me work on block starts, drive phase, body mechanics and speed endurance to prepare for the AAU Regional championships this year. 10 | JULY/AUG 2014
Who do you think will be your toughest competitors? I think it would be myself, because I sometimes think I can do better. What has been your best race or most memorable race so far? My most memorable race was when I ran my very first 100 meter race when I was 8 years old and I got first place. How is the preparation for nationals going? I qualified for the 2014 AAU Junior Olympics in the 100m, 200m and Long Jump in the 11 year old division.
Do you have any thing you do on race day or the night before to get yourself prepared or do you just wait for the gun to off and go? I like my mom to cook me pasta the night before and my coach likes us to rest well the night before we race. When you're at the start line what are you thinking about? I’m thinking about nothing really, I just try to relax. What's the best advice your coach has given you? Running track is about your own time, not other people’s times.
"running track is about your time" not other peop le's times!"
What's the best thing about being on your track club?
What kind of training shoes do you use and what spikes do you use to race in?
The best thing is that my track club likes to focus on speed training.
I like to use Nike Free Runs 5.0 for training and I race with Asics spikes.
Sounds like you're also a football player...tell us about your position and how that's going for you?
What is your Favorite?
Well I play lots of positions like Running Back, Wide Receiver, Safety, Corner Back, Kick Returner and Punt Returner but my favorite is Running Back. I have won back to back Super Bowls. Do do you have any role models or people you look up to? I look up to my parents because they are always there for me.
Breakfast Cereal – Cocoa Krispies Video Game – Madden and NBA2K Thing to do besides track and field – Swimming, going to the movies, Bowling and hanging out with my older brother and my baby sister. Other sports you like besides track and football - Basketball Best subject in school - Math What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to be a pro football player, pro basketball player or a track star. I just have to work hard. Any advice for other kids who want to be sprinters like you? You need to have that killer instinct and lots of determination. You also have to work as hard as you can. Make sure you eat right and give your body time to recover and be ready for competition. Anything else you'd like to tell us about yourself? I have always been active. I started playing sports when I was 5 years old. I am very competitive in every sport I play. I think I am very good in sports because my grandfather, Sam Robinson, played basketball in high school, college and in the pros.

JONAH
GOREVIC Jonah sprinting to the finish line. Check out his expression! 12 | JULY/AUG 2014
On June 14th Jonah did what most of you do on race day... After his cereal and buckwheat pancakes he threw his spikes in his backpack and left for the track. The only difference on this day is that Jonah broke the world record in the mile run for a ten year old boy. Nehemiah Skandera from Santa Rosa, California ran 5:05.3 last year. Jonah ran four laps in 5:01.55 at the adidas Grand Prix in New York. Words: Yasmine Diarra Photography: Photo Run We hear you're a soccer player, any prediction on who will win the World Cup? Brazil Who do you like next to the USA Team? Argentina What position in soccer do you play? Left wing What is the name of your team or school that you play on? Mamaroneck Tornadoes (soccer) How do manage your school, running, and soccer? I run 2-3 days a week and play soccer 2-3 times a week. I usually don’t do both on the same day which leaves time for homework and projects. Kids want to know how you got started in running? I’ve always loved running and so three years ago, I decided to join a club called the Tailwind Track Club in Westchester, NY. How many workouts a week do you do and what is a normal amount of mileage right now? 2-3 workouts, depending on my schedule. My normal mileage is 10-12 miles a week when I’m training. Will you compete at Junior Olympics Nationals?
No, I will be at Sleepaway camp then. When you had the record in mind what were you thinking about during the race? I was calculating in my head what time I needed to run for each 400, based on what my last split was, to break the record. How about at the starting line? I was nervous, like I always am before a race so I watched the other races. Then at the crack of the gun, I just thought, “Go, go, go!” What does a typical breakfast look like for you? Bowl of cereal and granola with milk and fruit, most likely banana. But before races, I always eat my dad’s special buckwheat pancakes with chocolate chips. Any sports athletes you look up to as role models? Lionel Messi – he’s short, left-footed and number 10 like me. I also saw Bernard Lagat run at the Milrose games and he was super fast, so I was really excited to get a shout out from him on Twitter after my race. Best school subject? Recess. Just kidding - math Favorite color? Blue Last movie you saw? Maleficent. YOUTHRUNNER.COM | 13

ity Teams in Ventura County compete against each other and the top kids advance to the LA County Meet which has some tough competition. This season the coaches offered a challenge that whoever ran a mile under 5:30 could go on a trip to the Portland Track Festival, (1500 for the girls and 1600 for the boys, most were under 5:00 ) 23 kids made the time and 11 made the trip. They called it the “Dream Weekend” and went to the University of Oregon for the NCAA’s, met athletes and got some autographs, plus went to Track Town Pizza for some more fun. Then a tour at Nike by Olympian Evan Jaeger, all before the middle school mile and 1500. For the girls Sofia Ramos almost edged out the Oregon Middle School Girls Champion McKenna Henke. It was 4:52.81 for McKenna and Sofia’s 4:52.80 in the Girls 1500 Meter. Ethan Ronk was the first Tigre through for the Boys 1 Mile Run in 4:52.64 for 5th place. This is one group of crazy and fun kids. The next time we see them just may be on their track. Way to Go Tigres!

HERSHEY'S TRACK AND FIELD IT REALLY IS MORE THAN JUST A TRACK MEET
Words: YR staff Photography: Jennifer Gallagher

Track & Field really is fun
his will be the last year for what we’ve all known as Hershey Track & Field and the organizers at the Washington State Meet made sure it was an event to remember. Packet pickup was the night before at a place called “Big Al’s”, a bowling and pizza place. The opening ceremonies on the track included a Drum Line that you could hear for miles and an entertainer named Shyan who sang the National Anthem and gave a talk. Cool thing is that he ran Hershey’s at age nine himself. After the meet they took over a movie theater. It was awesome! The competition was fierce as this is the qualifier for the North American Finals in Hershey, PA. Washington
State’s Region includes Oregon, Montana, Alaska, Idaho, and four Canadian Provinces. Izaiah Fields got most of the attention with his records in the 100 and the 200 meter dashes but Yohane Griffin from Federal Way was a close second in both races. Saudia James was a top contender again in the sprints, she has already made four trips to Hershey. Kayla Johnson threw the softball for a state record and Emmanuel Huang won the 100 meter for 11-12 year old boys and took second in the 400. Way to Go Washington Hershey’s!
515 Izaiah Fields won both the 100 and 200 meter dash, close behind were 699 Nataniel Ratliff, 548 Gary Harris, and 654 Anthony Miranda
