LETTER FROM THE

GUEST EDITOR With no prior experience, I started track my freshman year at Whitney High School. Most kids who take their sport seriously play for a club and have legitimate coaches with extensive hours of training and practice. Me? I joined to stay active– back then team sports weren't exactly my thing. Hurdles seemed to suit me since I figured that regular sprints would be a little boring. Soon I realized that I had a lot of potential athleticism and decided this was the sport for me. My main event became the 300h. I still tried to do the 100h, but I kept falling, going over the hurdle with my off leg, and my strides in between just didn't seem right, so I put that race on hold. Still, I competed as varsity and kept up with all the other girls and even did better

than most of them. In fact, I broke the 300h school record at my second meet. By the end of my freshman year I had shattered it and made it to CIF.

CONTRIBUTING DESIGNER Ashley Agee

After breaking the school record, I challenged myself to stay motivated and to continue reaching for new goals. I was really nervous at the start of the season, but I worked a lot harder and surprised myself with amazing results. I picked up the 100h and I just learned how to 3-step on my own. I was determined to get as much experience as possible even if it meant doing it on my own. My sophomore year just became a whirlwind of running and achievements. My 2013 track season was REALLY good. This year I'm a junior and I'm excited for what's to come this season. I'm already working super hard and can't wait to get those good results. BEST…..YASMINE

Hard Work Beats Talent Hey everybody! My name is Lea and I’m a high school student from Virginia! I’m a varsity cross country athlete and I’m extremely excited to be working with Youth Runner! Cross country taught me the importance of teamwork, commitment, and dedication. Runners are dedicated to what we do; constantly training day in and day out just to shave off a couple of seconds off our PR times. Even though runners sacrifice an extensive amount of time and effort into our sport, there is no feeling more gratifying than achieving a goal that you’ve worked hard for and truly deserved. I’m almost positive that every athlete has heard this saying at one point or another, but I believe that its message is timeless, “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.” The best advice that I can offer other athletes is that there is no substitute for hard work. Only you can motivate yourself to work hard enough to reach your full potential.

Makenna, Joshua, Ryan And Eric Schumacher On The Track

T

here’s usually a bright smile on the faces of the Schumacher kids until they step up to the line, but when the race face comes on it’s time for business. In early track meets this year Joshua, Makenna, and Ryan have all won their events ranging in the 800-1500-3000. In XC Josh and Makenna both finished 1st at their State Middle School Championships and did well at the Junior Olympic National XC Champs in San Antonio. Josh rolled in 20th while Makenna came in 7th and her team was 3rd overall. Ryan pushed through to a 26th place. Little brother Eric was on the side shouting out “make your move now.” What started having out as having fun with running at a CYO meet is still a whole lot of fun for the Schumachers.

Joshua YR: Last cross country season you were the local powerhouse in your age group and ran alone out front quite a few times. Tell us about the overall experience when you got to nationals and ran with other fast kids your age. Joshua: It was great to go to nationals and see how we stacked up against the rest of the country. I personally really enjoy racing from behind so it was great to get the chance to run with a big group and work with a pack. YR: Did you have an idea who you would be competing against before you went? Who was the toughest kid you ran against? Joshua: I knew that a couple fast kids from our regional meet would also be at nationals. I looked up some of the other regional results before we left so I had a good idea of some guys to look out for. I had already raced Gabe Fendel twice and split 1 to 1 against him before nationals. But he got the better of me in San Antonio (he got 2nd to my 20th).

learned and how you got yourself back on your feet for the next race? Joshua: Actually my first time racing at National XC I fell about 400 meters into the race. I still got up and closed well at the end, but spent far too much of the middle of the race mentally recovering. I learned that often you have to adjust your race plan mid race because things happen during a race that are impossible to predict before hand.

"I honestly just enjoy running"

YR: Do you have any goal times for the 1500 or the 3000 for Junior Olympic Nationals this summer? Joshua: This year I am just going to run the CYO season and possibly some MS mile events at some big meets. As for my goals, I am just looking for some good PR’s. YR: High school is coming up next fall, will you do anything different this summer to prepare yourself for the transition? Joshua: This summer I will most likely increase my mileage slightly as I have been doing each season. I will also probably work out a couple times with my high school team. YR: Do you have a race that didn't go so well you can tell us about and then what you 10 | MAY/JUNE 2014

Some kids mow lawns in the summer. Josh has fun working the hills.

ually placed 7th and our girls Bowerman team got 3rd place overall for 11-12 year olds! YR: For girls that don't have brothers, what's the biggest difference in running with the boys vs. being with the other girls on your team? Makenna: The biggest difference is that my brothers always run fast and try to drop me. There is a lot more talking and fun when I run with my friends. YR: Goals for this year for track and xc? Makenna: I would like to win the 3000 and 1500 in the CYO Meet of Champions. In XC it would be so great if our team could win Nationals. Sometimes the best part of the workout is relaxing when you're done.

YR: What was the best race ever for you? Joshua: I think my best race was at MOC last year in the 3000m. I PR’d by exactly 30 seconds but still got beat by a second.

YR: What encouragement or advice would you give to other runners? Joshua: Just keep running! The more you run the more you enjoy it!

YR: When your race face isn't on you always seem to have a great smile. What makes you tick? Maybe you've never thought about it before but is there something that motivates you when you get up in the morning to keeping running and do well?

FAVORITES -Breakfast Cereal: Kashi Berry Crumble or oatmeal -School Subject: History -Other sports: Swimming and Basketball

Joshua: I honestly just enjoy running. Whether racing or running easy, the thought of the next run always makes me smile.

YR: Tell us about your first CYO track meet experience.

YR: What's the best piece of advice any coach has given you? Joshua: My Dad always says, “don’t be afraid to work hard.” (However, he tells me that more during yard work than running…. )

makenna Makenna: I was in 3rd grade and I ran the 1500 and 800. I remember being very excited about winning a ribbon.

YR: How fun has it been for you to have Shalane as a running buddy? Makenna: Having Shalane as a running buddy is so awesome! She is someone I really look up to. She encourages me to run as tough and as hard as I can. I guess the reason that I have had success in track and cross country is because I have the most amazing running buddy in the world!! YR: Advice for other girls who want to take up running? Makenna: Find some girls who like running and start meeting them a couple times a week to run. It is a lot of fun and before you know it you will get in good shape. FAVORITES -Sport besides track and running: Swimming -Food: Pizza -Movie:Divergent

YR: What about your most memorable race so far? Makenna: My most memorable race was xc nationals 2013 when I individYOUTHRUNNER.COM | 11

ryan YR: We saw you run the 800 recently and you looked really good. Are you trying to be better and faster than your brother or are you just out there to have some fun? Or both? Ryan: Both. I like to have fun but I also try to beat my brother’s time when he was my age. YR: What events will you run at the Meet of Champions and do you have any goal times or expectations? Ryan: I am going to run the 3000 and the 1500. I would like to break 5 minutes in the 1500 and in the 3000 I want to go under 10:30. YR: Who is your favorite pro athlete? Doesn't have to be a runner.

Makenna makes the log jump look easy.

Eric shows you don't have to be oldest or tallest to be the coolest.

Ryan: Damien Lillard FAVORITES -Video Game: NBA Jam -Color: Volt -Other Sport: Basketball -Best Book you've read: Running for my Life by Lopez Lomong

eric YR: Keep up the good work on those jumping jacks...just wondering how it feels to be the littlest guy in the family with the most energy? Eric: It’s great! I feel like I can get away with a lot because I am the youngest! I definitely have the most energy because I hold the family fuel band record. YR: If you decide to be in the track meets what distance will you want to run? Eric: 1500, 3000 and 800m YR: What's your favorite part about school and the subject you're the best at? Eric: I love recess and my favorite subject is Science. YR: What was the funnest part of being at the photo shoot? Eric: Watching my sister struggle trying to jump off the log.

ITS ALL IN THE DISTANCE Words: Tess Lackey Photography: Kaitlin Emmerling

O

n any other day you wear training shoes to jog a mile or maybe six. You lace them up to practice long jump. You wear training shoes for every workout, except on track meet days when you switch out those weighty, cumbersome shoes for lightweight, streamlined spike shoes. The spikes that screw into the bottom of the shoe provide better traction than any other shoe when you need it most: the start of the race and the final stretch. Yet, not every track meet allows competitors to wear spikes, take the Hershey’s track and field meet for example; competitors are not allowed to wear spike shoes at all. Others like AAU and USATF sanctioned meets allow the use of spikes, but they regulate which type of spike can be used in the shoe. Whether your coach provides you with replacement spikes in an old pill bottle, as mine did, or you purchase your own, there are several replacement spike types available. 18 | MAY/JUNE 2014

YOUTHRUNNER.COM | 19

yr sPIKE

guide

"knowing which type of spike shoe you need will better equip you for race day."

WHAT TYPES OF SPIKES ARE AVAILABLE?

1

NEEDLE SPIKES

Needle spikes are often thin and not blunted on the ends, which means most track meets prohibit anyone from wearing them.

20 | MAY/JUNE 2014

2

Pyramid Spikes

The most common. AAU sanctioned meets require pyramid spikes to be between 1/8" and 1/4" long, and they are easily recognizable from needle spikes because of the blunted tip and larger base.

3

Blank Spikes

Blanks spikes serve as a filler for after you take spikes out. Running on any replacement spikes will cause them to become worn, so always check and change out your spikes when necessary.

It's all in the distance

Spike shoes, also called spikes, are universally made to fit most replacement spikes, but there are subtle differences in the shoes themselves. For most short distance sprinters the spikes will contain very little heel support, if any. Whereas, the middle and long distance spikes have a noticeable heel cushion considering the runner’s heel strikes the ground more times in an 800 than during a 200-meter race.

MORE ABOUT SPIKES:

YASMINE BREAKS IT DOWN

Although slightly less important than the shoes you train in everyday, your competition spikes still have a significant impact on your performance. They can literally make the difference between a first and second place finish. Are your spikes too dull? Are they light enough? Are your feet supported enough? Are you running with the correct spikes? Do you look like a superstar when you run? If you answered yes to all these questions then I guess you have the perfect pair of spikes! If not, then let me help you out! HS Blogger-Reviews Emma and Casey get the scoop from Foot Traffic manager Dan McGruff

KEEP 'EM SHARP

Make sure you change out your spikes periodically. It's important that they remain sharp enough to dig into the track and propel you forward as you push off.

22 | MAY/JUNE 2014

2

keep 'EM light

Since your spikes are for competition, its essential that your spikes are light as feathers. You don’t want anything slowing you down when you’re trying to run your fastest.

3

find good support

Even though your spikes are only for competition, you still want your feet to be supported. Spikes that drop your arch or hurt your shins will only prevent you from competing in future competitions. Find a pair of spikes that fits to the shape of YOUR foot.

4

DIFFERENTIATE

Spikes are made specifically for certain events. Distance spikes have more supports at the heel, while sprint spikes have little to no support at the heel. High jump spikes have spikes all over the sole of the shoes while running spikes usually only have spikes at the fore foot.

5

HAVE FUN!

Find a pair of super cool looking spikes that compliment you! They don’t have to be flashy or too colorful, but make sure that you LOVE them, because you’re the one running in them.

how should you prepare?

preparing for competition

to-do-list

Words: Yasmine Diara

Bring Essentials

Before a competition it’s crucial that you’re not only prepared physically, but also mentally. Remember that chance favors those who have prepared. The more prepared, the more likely you can succeed if something goes wrong on race day. With training comes muscle memory that will help you react quickly throughout your race. Other than training and conditioning, check out these things you should do to prepare for the big day:

alarm clock Get a good night sleep!

1

the night before

Drink lots of water before you go sleep to make sure you stay nice and hydrated. GO TO SLEEP EARLY and don’t stay out too late! You can party after you win a medal at your race! I can’t emphasize this enough! There’s nothing worse than running a race while you’re still tired and groggy.

26 | MAY/JUNE 2014

I’m not fond of this but eat a light and healthy breakfast! I’m not really a fan of eating so early in the morning but I know that it’s good for my body. I usually eat a banana, a bowl of cereal, a CLIFF bar, or a yogurt. Since you packed your bag the night before, you really have nothing to worry about. Do relaxing things to stay calm and don’t worry about your race too much.

3

in the blocks

At this point everything is a mental game. Stay focused on the task at hand and don’t even worry about the competition around you because this is YOUR RACE and they’re just running with you. Don’t focus on winning but rather on reaching your personal goals. You should trust in yourself that you’ve done everything you possibly could have in order to prepare for this race.

Good form running

The Four Points to Good Running Form 1

2

3

4

Cadence Many new runner’s cadence: 150-160 strides per minute. GFR goal: 180. Test yourself: run for one minute, count your right foot’s steps, and multiply by two for your cadence. High cadence = less time your foot is on the ground, which prevents injury.

7 LEAN Lean uses gravity to help move forward. To practice, stand tall and reset posture. Start to slightly lean forward, feel your toes grab the ground, and naturally step forward to catch yourself. Lean from the ankle, don’t bend at the waist.

MIKE GRANT

Teaching good running form to kids will help reduce injury risk and give many kids a better long term running experience. A terrific program is Good Form Running, which teaches 4 basic principles and gives simple cues to help proper movement and mechanics awareness. GFR benefits include fewer injuries, less fatigue, faster running! Teaching Good Form Running doesn’t require more of a teacher than a stopwatch and a metronome. Videotaping running form is a useful tool, if you have the capability. Good Form Running is simple and fun.

POSTURE Stand tall with relaxed shoulders, feet pointed forward, soft knees, elbows 90 degrees. “Posture Reset” Looking straight ahead, raise arms to the sky, then slowly lower to your sides. Reaching up and reset a tall posture, with no slouching.

MIDFOOT Stand on one leg, with your entire foot on the ground. March in place, using hipflexors, not calf, to raise/lower your leg. Then march in place using toes, then heels. How’s it feel? Landing midfoot below the hips helps stability, safety, and reduces impact shock.
