SRE in schools
DID YOU KNOW? Over 74% of Christians put their faith in Jesus before the age of 20. NSW legislation enables all children enrolled in state schools to be taught about their religion. Christians are welcome to teach children enrolled in Christian SRE about their faith.

Shapethe World Currently, 20% of Sydney residents are under 15. That’s over 800,000 kids! In NSW, legislation is in place that enables people from recognised religious groups to go into schools each week to teach about their religion. This means that Christians are welcome to teach the good news about Jesus to all the children in State schools who are enrolled for Christian SRE. Many of the kids are from non-churched backgrounds. SRE is often the only place they get to hear about God, Jesus and what it means to be a Christian. They also get to know a Christian who cares for them and is concerned with their eternal well-being. SRE teachers get to shape these young lives for eternity every week!
How to be involved in SRE
Talk to your local minister or co-ordinator about the needs and opportunities in your own area.
Assist someone already teaching, see what it’s like, meet the kids, help out in the classroom.
Pray choose an SRE class and a teacher, and support them each week by praying.
Help with child-minding, transport, and resources to allow someone else to teach SRE.
Frequently asked questions ... • I’ve never taught before and I don’t know what to do! Connect (CEP school curriculum) provides a teacher’s manual, coloured visual aids, CD of songs and dramas and a student activity book. Youthworks provides training for SRE teachers. www.training.youthworks.net • I don’t know all the answers! That’s OK. Students are happy for you to be honest and say you’ll find out for next time. • Will I be able to manage the class? SRE teachers are part of the school community and you can use the same code of conduct and consequences as the classroom teacher. You will have school support. • I don’t have the time! Be creative – adjust work hours, or prioritise your time differently.
