CREATIVE DRIVER When someone is brutally, transparently, honest - it’s kind of sexy isn’t it? As of lately I find myself cutting through all the noise and just surrounding myself with honesty. I really respect him and hope he continues to teach me endless lessons in humility in my personal life and in business. There’s a saying out there that states, honesty is the highest form of integrity and it truly is. If there is one thing that my team and I share, it is just that - honesty and integrity. If I am unable to deliver on my word, there is no way I can expect others to deliver on theirs. I would be a walking contradiction. There is so much noise in this world and with so many people presenting so many different facets to their livelihood via social media and digital technology, why don’t we just simplify *ish and keep it honest? Just some food for thought as you read this months issue of The Youzus Report. There’s definitely a lot of honesty here. Enjoy!

The Youzus Report

Do you see #blueandblack or #whiteandgold? It has only been a hot minute since #TheDress phenomenon went viral and took over almost every medium sea to sea to discuss the true colour of this controversial dress.

Heated debates quickly went from online to offline in a matter of hours after Grace Johnson’s mother sent her multiple photos of dresses (the “dress” included) to ask her daughter’s opinion on which one she could wear to Grace’s wedding a week later. Though the true colour of the dress (despite anyone on team #whiteandgold), is in fact actually blue and black, Grace originally told her mother that she liked the white and gold dress best. After arguing with her mother and her soon-to-be-husband over the real hue, she posted it online to ask her close Facebook friends what they thought, which then urged her to post it to the Tumblr community.

From Tumblr, to Twitter, to Facebook, to even television stations worldwide, #TheDress was trending as the hottest topic of everyone’s conversations. But as we all know, no trend is really a trend until it ends up on the the Ellen Degeneres show, which is eventually did a couple days after it’s worldly takeover. There have been memes, spin offs, and even interviews with “The Dress” since it’s made its shocking debut online. However, among all the spoofs and fandemonium following the dress, there was one company in particular who took this opportunity to present #TheDress fandom with some real world issues: domestic violence. The Salvation Army South Africa quickly utilized the hype of the dress within a matter of 24-hours and turned it into a public service announcement that symbolizes that things may not always be as they seem: “Why is it so hard to see black and blue?” The campaign features a women pictured in a white and gold version of the dress, while also covered in bruises. The campaign set out to highlight that most women suffering from domestic violence usually won’t seek help, and will rather hide it under their clothes and behind makeup. This campaign was meant to ride out the wave of #TheDress while exposing the truth and severity of a real, more important issue. The image was blasted out on Twitter, receiving 8,900 retweets and favourited by over 4,000 users.

Now that is what we call #DoingItRight. 5

From accountant to cover model,

NADINE DUMAS TAKES THE FITNESS INDUSTRY BY STORM by: @alexandradavies

Transformational coach and fitness expert, Nadine Dumas, is the founder and CEO of “live FIT,” a new online fitness program to ultimately change the way women think, act and feel about food and training. For over 8 years, Nadine has helped countless women from around the world to not only change the way they look, but to also change how they feel about themselves. As a renowned and well-respected fitness authority, Nadine is certified in Sports Nutrition, Personal Training, Child Obesity and TRX (Total Body Resistance) and has trained a variety of clients, including movie star, Channing Tatum’s stunt double. Though she was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, she now resides with her son in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. While she dominates the fitness industry by storm, Nadine had the time to chat with us to get the inside scoop on how she has climbed to the top of her game:

8

The Youzus Report

1. FIRST AND FOREMOST, WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO TAKE UP FITNESS? WERE YOU ALWAYS INTO WORKING OUT BEFORE YOU LAUNCHED YOUR CAREER IN THE INDUSTRY? It really wasn’t until I turned 25 that I became serious about my fitness. I had grown up always playing sports such as basketball and volleyball, but more just for my junior high and high school teams- I wasn’t overly serious about it. When I moved to the Cayman Islands, that was when I started to get serious about it. I had also gained some weight with the move. The island is a very social island and moving here not knowing a soul, I found myself going out more often, meeting lots of people and socializing- which came hand in hand with drinking and eating out. I started attending one of the local gyms and fell in love with lifting weights when I saw how it changed my body. From then I guess you can say I “caught the bug.” 2. HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOUR CAREER? AND WHAT LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? It was when I moved to Cayman back in 2005 as an accountant. I started going regularly to one of the gyms and noticed there were a number of people training for a fitness show. I then decided to attend the show, loved it, and from there wanted to give it a try myself. About a year later, I had just won my show and immediately gave my resignation to my accounting job. I moved back to Canada to finish my designation for my CGA, but found I was completely consumed and intrigued by the fitness industry. I wanted to learn more and as much as I could, so I put my accounting career on the back burner and pursued my passion. 3. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE ON THIS CAREER? It was the need to help others. Once I moved back, I had so many people ask me for advice and I loved giving it. Also at that time, I had co-owned a bodybuilding federation and saw a very large gap in coaching, so I decided to step in to help all of these competitors. I would coach them in everything from diet, to training, to choosing the right bikini for their competition, to hair and makeup, and finally to the most important aspect of it all: the post-competition stage. This was where I saw a huge need because most coaches were “done” their part after the client stepped off the stage, but in fact that was when

9

The Youzus Report

4. YOU ARE A VERY BUSY WOMAN, BUT WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY IN THE LIFE OF NADINE DUMAS? Really depends on where I am. If I am at home in Cayman, my life is very quiet but very busy online. I get up every morning before my 3 year old does and work, then get him up, dressed, fed and off to school. I have about an hour to work again and then I am off to train with my coach until I have to pick up the little one from school. We normally frequent the local market and have lunch together and then go home and play. I make dinner, give him a bath and he’s off to bed and I work for the rest of the night. My life is very full of work when I am here. When I have people visit, we play tourist and hang out at the beach or pool. But if I am back in Canada or the US, my life is a bit more hectic. I will still get up early and work, head to the gym (normally the hotel that I am staying at), and then get ready for the day which consists of meeting with clients, appearances, or catching a flight somewhere again. Normally when I travel, I’m working on photo shoots, so my days are full of attending the location, getting hair and makeup done and shooting for the remainder of the day. After all that, you will find me back at my hotel catching up on all the emails I missed for the day. 5. WHERE DO YOU SEE LIVE FIT OR NADINE DUMAS IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS? As a household name. Plain and simple. My goal is to reach out to the average female, the busy mom, the business professional. I have and am one so I get it, understand what they go through on a day to day basis, which is why I want to share my experiences and knowledge to those around me. 6. YOU SEEM VERY ACTIVE ONLINE. HOW DO YOU USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO ENGAGE WITH YOUR FANS? I really like to use my social media platforms to engage not only with my clients, but also with my followers to share my favourite tips and advice, track my client’s hard work, and to interact with the health and wellness-minded community. Regardless if they are my client or not, I love chatting about what works, what doesn’t, and offering any advice I can give to those struggling with motivation, meals, supplement choices, etc 7. IF YOU COULD GIVE ANY PIECE OF ADVICE TO ANYONE JUST STARTING OUT, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Trust the process. Have any questions of your own for Nadine? Tweet us at @youzus_inc and tag @nadinedumas or use her #NadineDumas hashtag. 10

@NANCILYNSELVA We all know and love Jimmy Kimmel’s famous “Mean Tweets” segment - so why not use this as a great opportunity to advertise? The Canadian Safe Schools Network and John St. Advertising Agency partnered with Jimmy Kimmel for a special cyberbullying segment called “Kids Read Mean Tweets”. The video may sure have started to look like a regular Kimmel “Tweets” segment, but as the kids read their messages, unlike the celebrity addition, they aren’t laughing. The CSSN wanted to use the Mean Tweets segment to show that whether it’s celebrities or just regular kids - cyberbullying is no joke. It is also said that the team is now working to get this advertisement on live to air television to take away the stigma; their goal is to promote this AD at the 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs. For more details, check out their Indiegogo campaign: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/kids-read-mean-tweets--3

SATHISH

BALA

THIS IS DESIFEST.

As a serial entrepreneur, Sathish Bala is the founder and owner of digital marketing agency BlueBand Digital, BalaBowties, and desiUrbanMusic.com to name a few. Sathish loves finding new problems to solve, building teams who outperform expectations, developing deep rooted relationships with partners and clients, and challenging his own fears through the businesses he develops. We had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Sathish as the founder of Toronto’s largest South Asian Urban Music festival on the behind-the-scenes selection process, and how technology has helped evolve the event to what it is today: This is desiFEST.

19

The Youzus Report

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR INSPIRATION FOR DESIFEST. I am the founder and creative director at desiFEST. We are celebrating our 9th year in the city! desiFEST is a not-forprofit organization focused on empowering youth through music and arts. desiFEST the concert is a 12hr musical showcase of the best in South Asian Urban Music. It’s a high energy, blend of east-west and a fun family event. Our mandate is to help South musicians across Canada get discovered and showcase on our national platform. I started it because, 10 years, South Music will still be categorized only by Bollywood. Music is a reflection of the community and its story. We felt that the real challenges of being a South Asian in North America was that our culture shared through music didn’t have an outlet in North America and we wanted to solve that. THE 9TH ANNUAL DESIFEST IS COMING UP! HOW HAS IT EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?

The evolution of this project has been such a pleasure to watch. I love our team and their dedication to the project. We care so much about each and every artist we get to work with. We are inspired by their dedication and their passion for their craft. It pushes our creativity for the show. We invest in the BEST equipment, technology and staging. We have seen the change in new artists as they get on the stage and are motivated to do more! We have created a new network of developing artists that never existed and we are proud of the new music they are creating together. The fans have been amazing too and without their support, desiFEST would not have been so successful. Our first year had just under 15,000 fans and now we average over 45,000 attendees per show and every one of them stay till the very end at 11pm! For those who haven’t attended desiFest before, what is something they can look forward to at the 2015 event? 2015 has a very unique line up. For the first time, over 60% of the line up is new emerging artists. It’s the trend we were hoping to see as the original “O.G’s” of the game start to move from performing to production and mentoring. The sound this is year is very hype and we can’t wait for the show. For those who have not been to a desiFEST before, its not your typical ‘desi’ event. We are high energy, dancing non-stop and will leave you exhausted and happy! How do you select the talents that get featured in each year’s events? The artists selection process is one the MOST DIFFICULT things for us. During the first year of talent submissions we

20

The Youzus Report

had less than 10 and now we average over 100 submissions from artists across Canada, India, Pakistan, UK and more. With only 23 open show slots and limited working budget, our team spends a lot of time in reviewing each artist, and ensuring their quality and style fits our vision for the year. I hate sending out notices to people who we couldn’t add to the line and it’s one of the hardest things for us each year. The artist who do make the list get our full marketing and PR support behind time. HAS ANY TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS AFFECTED THE PLANNING, PROMOTION, AND EXECUTION OF THE FESTIVAL?

Music is a reflection of the community and its story.

As the owner of a digital marketing agency (bluebanddigital.com), using digital and social is key to our success. We engage our fans through these tool and they help us get the word out. We launched a music portal called desiurbanmusic.com to help curate and showcase the music you can’t find on YouTube. We have done live streaming before, we have a digital LED on stage that is unique to us and help artist include video content into their set and we recently launched a mobile app that will become a key part of 2015’s onsite consumer engagement. Go download it! Which social media platforms can we find DesiFest on? And which one’s the favourite? We are on FB.com/desiFEST, Twitter: @getdesified, IG: @desifestcanada and on YT: desifest. Web: desiurbanmusic.com My favourite is YouTube and desiurbanmusic. com. I am constantly vlogging and sharing new music with our fans! If you had to pinpoint the most epic performance in all of DesiFest history, what would it be? It sounds cliché BUT I love every performance on our stage. As the host/MC of the event, its such an amazing feeling to watch these artists blossom! If I had to pick

one, I would say Apache India in year two was magical. I grew up watching his music and the ‘don raja’ is a pioneer in blending east-west cultures. Being on stage with him was a highlight for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ai1_TVLrvnA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y3PsanB4I4 interview by: @vivianamy

The Youzus Report

Here’s how the story played off. A profile for a 25 year old female named Ava first appeared on the dating app, Tinder. Soon after, male users in the Austin area were interested and keen to hook up, so they swiped right. One enticed male in particular, Brock, had scrolled through Ava’s pictures, and swiped right as they formed a match. They were then connected through the app, and received a message from her soon after. The conversation was a bit unusual and different from the casual, “hey your cute, let’s hang out!” but this seemed to attract Brock even more. First, Ava asked if Brock had ever been in love. She then explained that she had not been in love herself, and asked him what is was that made him human. “What attracts you to me?” asked Ava, sounding increasingly like an automated chatbot. The conversation ended with Ava telling Brock that he has ‘passed my test’ and she invited him to visit her Instagram account. It soon became clear that the @MeetAva account was actually a promotional tool for the upcoming sci-fi movie, Ex Machina, as it featured photos and videos promoting the film. The photo of Ava’s profile was none other than the face of the Swedish actress who plays the lead character with artificial intelligence in the film. Was it a devastating ploy on emotions, or a sneaky but clever way of bringing the character to life? We think both. Brock may have been disappointed but this was a very creative way to promote and advertise the movie using one of the most used app in our society. We would give thumbs up to whoever came up with this ingenious concept, and who knows what Tinder has to say about this, it definitely put them up on the map as well!

MEET AVA. THE TINDER PROFILE THAT FOOLED MANY by: @priyaamm This month, an out of the ordinary article began swooping social media platforms labeled “Warning: Ava Tinder Fake Profile” and had everyone wanting to read what exactly this was about. Turns out, Tinder users attending the South-by-Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, have been left bitterly disappointed after a profile for the attractive young woman turned out to be an elaborate marketing ploy for a new movie.

N

othing lubricates social situations quite like wine; in fact they say that people who have one (and just one) glass of wine look more attractive. Their skin glows, facial muscles release tension and wine makes people smile more making you appear more attractive to everyone. Much like food, people love to share what’s in their glass with their social circles online and why shouldn’t you when a glass can bring such joy and happiness. As a wine nerd myself, I’ve had my fair share of “happy wine moments” and of course putting them online is part of the deal! Here are my thoughts on some of the top wine apps around, however, just like wine, it’s up to you to figure out what suits your fancy!

by: @angelaaiello

IYELLOW WINE CLUB APP This FREE app I developed is a way to keep wine labels somewhere organized with notes, you can take a picture of your wineand write your own notes – it’s not perfect and second edition is coming soon, but good none the less. And if you’re an iYellow member it will only get better with event details and recommended wines. You can rate the wines out of 5 and come up with your own creative wine notes too.

DELECTABLE APP I heard about this FREE app from some other wine nerds I know and it’s a great app that can grab all the information from a picture of the label. It’s a very advanced level wine app with lots of social media integration and has a ‘buy’ section and pricing – the only down part is that most of the information comes from the US on pricing and availability.

LCBO ON THE GO APP A great FREE app that helps with Ontario based wine searches. You can scan barcodes, keyword search, browse products, find LCBO stores, have a favourites list for wine and for stores you visit. Very detailed and useful for Torontonians.

VIVINO APP A great app that is global, although it didn’t pick up my wines perfectly in the camera section, if you input enough wines into the “My Wines” section it creates a taste profile for you. It has also a link to some great wine articles too. Very detailed and it even has Canadian wine recommendations, article and lists of best wines under $20 and above.

POCKET WINE APP A great app that is FREE and has a paid part too. It is designed to be an app that pairs wine and food. It also has a great educational component where you can learn about regions, taste profiles and acidity levels, history and even pronunciations of grape names.

SOCIAL MEDIA HOROSCOPES

See what the stars have to say about your social-ness! This month will be filled with trying new things. Be sure to take lots of pictures and post them on your instafeed. You are going to show someone you haven’t spoke to in a long time that your life is anything but boring. Express yourself, be free and embrace everyday. People are starting to feel your radiating passion towards your job and what you do. Don’t be afraid to tweet inspirational quotes and tweet about your everyday accomplishments and thoughts. People see you as a leader, they will follow. This month will be your month of growth. Your facebook is dying need for an update, so don’t hesitate to create albums and post recent pictures from time to time. You are a really busy person and people are beginning to dig up old posts from years ago. It’s time to put those to rest and show your friends how much you’ve changed since then.

Things are looking up and it’s time for opportunity! New openings for you to shine will begin through your presence on twitter & LinkedIn. Tweet to your hearts content, use hash tags and don’t be afraid to show off what you’ve been up to at work, new projects, successes and your interests. Connect with people on LinkedIn, fix up your resume and apply for new jobs, someone out there is waiting to discover your talents.

Someone may be disloyal to you, or try to claim something of yours at their own. Be wary of Twitter joke-stealers, or those who might quote you without attribution. Make sure your followers on all platforms are people you know and trust with all the available information, delete spam accounts or anyone you may not know.

Things aren’t always what they seem. This month try to focus on doing you, and maybe tune off of facebook for awhile. You may be becoming caught up on comparing your life with others by looking at their pictures and tweets. Remember social media is a great platform to connect, but in moderation. People only show what they want seen.

It’s your time to shine Libra! Go ahead and update that display picture on Facebook, post everyday on Instagram and become an avid SnapChatter- the world is ready to hear from you!

28

The Youzus Report

Tired of the same old lifestyle? LinkedIn is waiting for you, Taurus! Get on it, create a profile and who knows what career oppurtunities will come to you this month! The starts are in your favour!

You seem to the king of hastags this month. Be careful what you hashtag, you may gain the wrong crowd of followers that you weren’t gearing towards. Remember to use block or report if you feel anything suspicious.

People are noticing you, you doing great things and moving ahead. Jealousy in the eye of others may be your worst enemy this month. You may find yourself heavily trolled: do not engage. This is the time to use the “block” button with abandon, as your judgment will be swift but clear that you only want supportive people in your social life, no one who will try to bring you down.

You Instagram superstar, you! Everyone is enjoying your life updates, but be careful to keep it consistent and not too overpowering. Keep a steady break between posts as the stars are saying you may drop down to only 10 likes her picture if you post too often.

Your selfie game is definitely heating up on Instagram this month- you might just knock Kendall and Kylie out of the game!

Looks like you’ve been keeping your crush up-to-date with your latest photos on Facebook- keep at’ em and your crush might just poke you!
