Newman Lake
Deer Lake, located in Stevens County, Washington, is a spring-fed and snow-fed lake with approximately a 1,150-acre surface in the Colville River watershed. The crystal clear water of Deer Lake reflects the beautiful mountain peaks and lush forests that are abundant in the area. The early development of Deer Lake is a littleknown, but fascinating chapter in African-American history in the Pacific Northwest, as we see in this contemporary account: The Spokesman-Review of March 6, 1910 featured this headline: ‘Spokane [African-Americans] Buy Land Tract to be Developed by Black Labor Only.’ The article continued, “… a [group of black entrepreneurs] has organized a development company, and bought 140 acres of land near Deer Lake.” Initially known as the Deer Lake Project, the company’s objectives were to operate the biggest and best orchard in Stevens County, to be both economical and profitable in their business undertakings, and to help defray expenses by growing truck garden vegetables between the trees. At least 45 stockholders from Spokane to Chicago invested $18,000 in the project. The land they developed is the site of the current Deer Lake Resort.
Here’s how to solve the problem for good:

Ideas & Insights
Just as the identity of Seattle is inseparable from its unique and amazing access to Puget Sound, so the communal life of Spokane has from its earliest days been indissolubly linked to water; not only the Spokane River and its falls that gave the city its original name, but no less to the incredible variety of lakes that surround it, providing recreational, economic and spiritual nourishment to our region. Here are some facts about these lakes that even some life-long residents may not know:

“Imagine there is a bank account that credits your account each morning with $86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening the bank deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to used during the day. What would you do? Draw out every cent, of course? Each of us has such a bank, it’s name is time. Every morning, it credits you 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off at a lost, whatever of this you failed to invest to a good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no over draft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the remains of the day. If you fail to use the day’s deposits, the loss is yours. There is no drawing against “tomorrow”. You must live in the present on today’s deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness, and health. The clock is running. Make the most of today.” ~ Marc Levy, If Only It Were True

• First, purchase a package of flea and tick killer, such as Frontline, that lists Fipronil as its sole active ingredient. • Mix 6 to 10 drops into a golfballsized portion of raw hamburger, and place it into a small plastic cup. • Add a cotton ball on which you squirt half the contents ofa tube of Rescue Yellowjacket Attractant found at most hardware stores. • Place the poison bait cup in the shade 2 to 4 feet from the ground and 10 to l5 yards from heavily trafficked areas. • Renew the bait every day; after 14 days, 100% of the yellowjackets within 200 sq. yards will be dead. Repeat baiting after 4 weeks for a few days, and your freedom from attack will be permanent.
Fishermen appreciate the water quality of Newman Lake, which is stocked regularly with largemouth bass, bluegill, tiger muskies, crappie, sunfish, perch, catfish, rainbow trout, brown trout, and eastern brook trout. Anglers will find public access on the east shore and from the various resorts. Newman Lake was named after William Newman who settled on the southern portion of the lake around 1860. Many explorers and traders from the Hudson’s Bay company constructed gardens at Newman Lake more than 145 years ago, just as they did on the west side of Liberty Lake. Early inhabitants of the area were Indians who roamed the lake and hillsides for berries and game. In the 1880’s, pioneers caught trout in Liberty Lake and transplanted them to Newman Lake. A federal government fish tank railroad car was parked at Moab, on the Northern Pacific main line. In 1887, residents carried carp to Newman Lake in buckets. On the east side of the lake in the 1920’s were the Newman Lake hotel and the 26-room Taylor hotel near the eastern extremity, which burned in 1934. A rancher named G.L. O’Neil, from the north end of the lake bought the location now called Honeymoon Bay for a down payment of $45.
Banks Lake
To recap:
Diamond Lake
Steamboat Rock State Park is a 3,522-acre camping park with 50,000 feet of freshwater shoreline at the north end of Banks Lake. Dominating the landscape is a columnar, basaltic rock with a surface area of 600 acres. Two campground areas and a large day-use area are on sweeping green lawns, protected from winds 3. by tall dramatic poplars. The surrounding areas are 4. carpeted with wildflowers, adding to the gray-green 5. brush of the Scablands. A sandy swimming area and 6. boat launches make the area a favorite for visitors who enjoy water-play and want respite from the hot, Enjoy your summer! summer sun. In the midst of desert, the park offers This Issue both lush green lawns and rocks for climbing. Miles Lakes P.1 of horse trail are open for day use. Diamond Lake is one of many natural lakes of northeastern Washington. It lies in the southern part of Pend Oreille County, about 8 miles southwest of Newport. Diamond Lake appears to have been formed by a dam of sand and gravel washed out from a glacier, blocking the valley in which the lake is now found. Diamond Lake has 7 miles of shoreline and is 800 acres in size. While Diamond Lake is small in size, at a mere 2.5 miles long and .5 miles wide, it is home to a surprising amount of fish. Anglers delight in the vast quantity of largemouth bass, catfish and yellow perch. Augmented by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Diamond Lake is one of the most heavily stocked bodies of water in the state of Washington - an average of 20,000 rainbow trout and 10,000 triploid and brown trout are transplanted yearly. A free public boat launch is located on the southeast side of the lake, which is also operated by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

A Brief History of the Quarter The Mint Act of 1792 specified that certain design features appear on legal tender coins, including the quarter-dollar. One side of the coin had to include the year in which it was minted, an image that symbolized liberty and the inscription LIBERTY. For more than 115 years, liberty was symbolized on the obverse (heads) of the coin by allegorical female figures (Lady Liberty) in the form of a bust or a full-length figure. The reverse (tails) of the quarter featured an eagle and the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The representations of Lady Liberty and the eagle on the quarter during the late 18th and early 19th centuries were altered many times to remain consistent with the changing designs of other coins. Lady Liberty started out with flowing hair, and then became a draped bust, then a capped bust. The eagle also underwent several makeovers. It began as a small eagle that many thought looked too much like a pigeon. Over time, the eagle grew to become grander and more heraldic. In 1932, the 200th anniversary of his birthday, a profile of President George Washington’s head replaced Lady Liberty. To celebrate the Bicentennial in 1976, a colonial drummer replaced the eagle on the reverse. In 1999 the quarter’s reverse underwent its first of 50 changes under the 50 State Quarters® Program to honor each state.

Mayor Condon’s Proud Announcement on June 29th: For only the third time in 40 years and first time in 11 years, Spokane has been designated an All-America City! Spokane was recognized for our community’s work with youth engagement and educational support. Our great city was selected as one of 14 finalists earlier this spring by the National Civic League. Just recently in Denver, Spokane was honored as one of 10 All-America Cities throughout the country. This year’s award focused on community efforts to engage and support vulnerable young men and boy. We presented three programs that illustrated Spokane’s leadership in youth engagement and intervention programs to the National Civic League: • Community Attendance Support Teams (CAST) • Communities in Schools • Youth Police Initiative (YPI) The All-America City competition is a tough one. Over the years, more than 2000 have been named finalists and only 600 have become winners. Spokane is fortunate enough to have won three times now: 1974, 2004 and now 2015. In recognition of earning All-America City status, we will be updating the signs you see around town noting that honor.

We all see statistics through our own eyes. A prospective Buyer might frown, seeing that average prices are up $30,000 over last year, and that they will have far fewer homes to choose from. A Seller’s face, however, might light up when he sees how much his property has appreciated, so long as he has a place to move to. But what of the people who are happy where they are? Why should they care about such statistics? Suppose their bank balance were $100,000 higher than they thought. They might travel more, add a sunroom, purchase rental property to support a child’s schooling, etc. If you have owned your property for more than a few years, ask your Coldwell Banker Tomlinson agent for a professional estimate of just how much your equity may have grown while you haven’t been looking.

ENERGY. If you want to see Spokane through fresh eyes, and feel the energy that pulses behind the pleasant, comfortable surface of our city, allowing it to grow and prosper, just spend a few minutes with Kate Hudson, Public Relations Manager of Visit Spokane. If you do, you will realize that the long table of diners near you at the restaurant, the pair of tourists behind you in line for the Looff Carousel, and that luxurious tour bus you just passed on the Monroe Street Bridge did not get here by accident. They and the dollars they leave behind in the pockets of the 10,000 residents of Spokane who make up its $1.3 billion hospitality industry are channeled here in part through the efforts of Visit Spokane, where teams of salespeople, graphic artists and skilled liaisons spend long hours on telephones, computers and airplanes pitching the benefits of visiting our fair city. HOST. Take Kate Hudson as an example. It is her responsibility to keep a steady drumbeat going in the ears of travel writers whose work is published in journals throughout the country, and read avidly by parents researching competing routes of travel from St. Louis to Bellingham, as well as by CEO’s trying to decide where to hold the next national sales meeting. She is, of course, a member of the Travel and Tourism section of the PRSA, the Public Relations Society of America. When she learned

that they were starting to consider where to hold their 2020 national conference, she went to work. After long consideration, the site selection committee whittled their options down to two: picturesque Charlotte N.C. and Spokane, Washington. Kate made sure that, on their visit to Spokane, not one of city’s outstanding features (e.g. Symphony, golf, fine hotels, lovely parks, superb restaurants…..) was lost on the committee members. It is my pleasure to announce that this highly discerning and influential group has selected Spokane to host their 2020 conference.
GUIDANCE. Not only tourists and visiting businesspeople rely on Visit Spokane for guidance, but also scores of Air Force families who are and will be transferred to Fairchild AFB, not to mention the thousands being brought to the city by such employers as Amazon, Comcast and MultiCare. They benefit established residents, also, by maintaining constant contact with restaurants, hotels and entertainment venues and publishing their current data in maps, brochures and a Visitor’s Guide, all of which they provide to us free of charge. If you are expecting out-oftown guests and would like to provide them with detailed, accurate information about how to enjoy their time here to the fullest, just contact your Coldwell Banker Tomlinson agent for the latest publications of Visit Spokane.

WITH FRIENDS LIKE ZILLOW, WHO NEEDS A REALTOR®? FREE. When dealing with business matters, the slogan “Follow the money” will usually steer you straight. It certainly applies in real estate, where so much information that used to be the private horde of Realtors® has recently been made readily available to the general public, thanks to the Internet, and especially to such websites as Redfin, Trulia, and Zillow. Huge sums of money have been required to develop the methods to gather information from all over the country and make it available to all and sundry…..and all for free! How can they do it for nothing, and why? And why does it make sense to pay a Realtor® when the same information is available for nothing?
REVENUE. The answers lie in understanding what motivates these two types of business: the industry of independent Realtors® and real estate brokerages on the one hand, and the Zillows and Trulias on the other. Zillow, of course, does not operate without revenue. In fact, it turns a tidy profit, selling advertising space on its website to real estate agents, who hope they will receive “leads,” i.e. the names and numbers of people who are interested in buying or selling real estate. Thus, the people who come to Zillow’s website for information are not its subject, but its object. They are what it has to offer its customers, who are its source of revenue. Its goal, then, is to attract as many people as possible, and to get them to spend as much time as possible on the website. SEARCH. One way to do this is to limit the search fields one can use to find houses, since the more detailed the search, the smaller the number of houses will be returned, and the less time will be spent looking at them. When you first navigate to Zillow’s website, you are asked to “Enter an address, city, neighborhood or zip
code.” If you do, you will end up poring over an awful lot of listings. And if you find one that interests you, and ask to receive information about it, be prepared to carry a battery pack, or your cell phone will be drained by all the calls you will receive from Zillow’s actual clients.
ACCURATE. on the other hand, has only one goal that guides all his/her efforts: to protect the best interest and fulfill the wishes of the client. To import any other agenda is not only bad business, it is a blatant violation of license law in every state in the country. One result of this is that when a Spokane Realtor’s® client wishes information, they are not referred to Zillow, but treated to reports from the Spokane Multiple Listing Service, an institution wholly supported by Realtors® and their brokers. The key that unlocks the datatreasure of the Spokane MLS is Paragon, a database management program that has been tweaked and honed over the past twenty years, so that it fits the needs of buyers and sellers like a glove. Unlike Zillow and its competitors, Paragon is designed to get clients precisely the information they need as quickly and accurately as possible, so that the client can found his/her decisions on a solid foundation. A Realtor®,
GOALS. Rather than offering a paltry handfull of search criteria, Paragon allows the Realtor® to focus a search with laser-like accuracy. Under “Kitchen,” there are sixteen search fields. Under “Exterior,” fourteen. If a client wishes only to see homes with jetted tubs in the master bath, no problem! If they insist on having the laundry on the main floor, such houses are the only ones they will see. Must the lot be larger than 10,000 square feet? The degree of granularity is staggering, but the reason for it is simple: your needs are paramount; your goals are the light at the end of our path.

4 medium beets 3 garlic cloves, unpeeled 1 medium fennel bulb 3 citrus fruit (ex: orange, blood orange, lemon) 1 head escarole 1 head radicchio Treviso ½ head radicchio ¼ cup mint leaves ¼ cup tarragon leaves 1/3 cup roasted hazelnuts, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus some for drizzling on beets • 1/8 teaspoon coarse sea salt • Freshly ground black pepper 3. 4. 5. 6.
1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Trim the beets of their tops and scrub clean. Pat beets dry and place cut side down, along with the garlic cloves, on a large rectangle of aluminum foil. Drizzle with a little olive oil and sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper. Wrap foil tightly, place the packet on small baking sheet, and roast in oven until beets are tender, about 45 minutes to one hour. Carefully open foil and let cool briefly. When able to handle, use a paper towel to rub the skins off the beets, and cut each beet into eight pieces. Reserve the roasted garlic cloves for the vinaigrette. 2. Trim the fennel green stems and cut bulb in half through root. Trim away most of root. Thinly slice the fennel and reserve in cold water. Drain before using. Citrus fruits, cut a little bit off each end, exposing the flesh below. Place cut side down on cutting board and trim away the pith and zest (the white and colorful stuff, respectively) by following the contour of the fruit with your sharp knife. Next, cut crosswise into round slices (pop the seeds out if you can) or cut out segments by trimming alongside the inner membranes. Cut the radicchio into one-inch-wide pieces and tear the escarole into smaller pieces. Pick the mint and tarragon leaves off the stems and wash along with the chicory. For the vinaigrette, remove the roasted garlic from the cloves and whisk together with the lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, Dijon, and olive oil. Season with a three-finger pinch of salt and a few grinds of black pepper. Combine all of the ingredients together in a large bowl. Start by using about ½ to ¾ of the vinaigrette, adding more to taste. Your clean hands make great salad tongs.
