Boutique label Silver Service is my jewellery secret, but the new ‘Heart’ collection is so good, I had to share. Skinny bangles and chunky rings bring the classic heart-lock charm up to date. The mixed metal combos are my fave. 6
Jigsaw’s Could-BeDesigner Collection As you’ll see from our bumper, new drops round-up on page 53, the spring high-street collections are just starting to touch down, and Jigsaw’s has really put me in the mood for a splurge. The prints and cuts ooze luxury, and there’s everything from glossy marbled frocks to weekendready tee, coat and jeans combos. At £350, the khaki suede jacket is an investment, but when it ticks off one of this season’s ‘It’ colours and the texture of SS15, I’d say it’s worth it. jacket, £350 top, £120 trousers, £98 Shoes, £149 all Jigsaw

I’m all about smart pieces that make getting dressed in the morning super easy, but Lavish Alice’s new range puts a laid-back spin on the look. Mixing safari with sports luxe, thanks to pocket and mesh details, the chic trousers and waistcoats will slot seamlessly into any wardrobe. Wearable neutrals reign supreme – rock them together or bring them to life in a flash with bright pieces.
2True’s Bargain Liners I’m sick of liquid liners that dry out too fast, don’t stay put and have tricky-to-use brushes, so I raided the Look beauty cupboard to find a new fave. That’s when I stumbled across 2True Pro Tech extreme eyeliners in Black and Brown, £4.50 each. COVER STORY
‘How I overcame my year of Heartbreak’ It’s not always been smooth sailing for popstar Rita Ora, 24, but this is one woman who really knows how to bounce back – and that’s exactly what she’s doing. Look reports…
Rita was devastated by her split from Calvin Harris She’s now in a turbulent relationship with Ricky Hilfiger
A
t the launch of The Voice this month, Rita Ora radiated happiness. Joining Will.i.am, Ricky Wilson and Tom Jones as the show’s latest coach, she cheered as she introduced the first episode and when Look sat down with her afterwards, she was as loud, funny and confident as she was on screen. ‘I’m so happy,’ she said. ‘I think people will see that I’m quite a goofball deep down, I like to laugh and have fun!’ It’s hard to imagine this outgoing woman, with a string of No 1 hits and high-profile fashion campaigns, has just experienced months of heartbreak after a devastating break-up with DJ Calvin Harris. After all, if breaking up with anyone is hard, imagine having to do it in front of millions of fans. ‘For a long time, I think she felt extremely anxious,’ a source tells us. ‘She worked so hard to get her career to where it is today, and suddenly her personal life threatened to ruin everything.’ The rise of Rita is nothing short of meteoric. Jay Z’s protégée, her debut album Ora flew in at No 1 in 2012, going platinum a year later when she performed on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury. She landed deals with Superga, Rimmel London, Madonna’s Material Girl Collection and she closed the catwalk show for DKNY at New
York Fashion Week in September 2013. Dipping her toes in the acting pool, she’s had cameos in 90210, Fast & Furious 6 and is starring alongside Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson in Fifty Shades Of Grey, out next month, playing Christian Grey’s sister, Mia. In other words, at the start of 2014, Rita seemed to have the world at her feet. But while her career was going from strength to strength, her personal life was falling apart. After just over a year of dating, in June, Calvin – the man she’d revealed was her first love – announced on Twitter: ‘To address speculation – myself and Rita ended our relationship some time ago. She is a beautiful, talented woman & I wish her all the best.’ Rita was devastated. ‘I don’t usually address speculation but I’ve had an incredible time with Calvin, and I will treasure the memories,’ she wrote days later. ‘I’ve moved on so I hope people will respect that and do the same.’ She later confessed she thought the split would play out in private. ‘If Calvin hadn’t [tweeted], I wouldn’t have,’ she said. ‘It took me five days to write three sentences.’ She also tweeted: ‘Have you ever wondered which hurts the most: Saying something & wishing you had not, or saying nothing and wishing you had?’ Our source says: ‘It was incredibly painful for Rita. She wanted to marry Calvin and spent weeks in tears, saying she’d screwed up the best thing that had happened to her.’ It
11
COVER STORY didn’t help that Calvin reacted by partying around the world and telling an interviewer ‘I don’t like celebrity women.’ Things went from bad to worse when Rita was due to perform I Will Never Let You Down at The Teen Choice Awards in August, which she was openly excited about. That’s until Calvin refused to give her the rights, as he’d written and
She’llalways love Calvin and bitterly regrets the split produced the song. It was a public snub to Rita, who was said to be ‘devastated’, and so humiliated that she pulled out of the event. ‘You write a song with somebody and I guess there’s stuff that comes with it,’ Rita said, admitting she was angry ‘for my fans [rather] than for my own selfish reasons’. But, ever positive, she said: ‘Everything happens for a reason, that’s how I look at it.’
They say time is the biggest healer, and that seems to be the case for Rita, who, our source says, is ‘finally OK with the relationship ending. But she’ll always love Calvin. She did wonder if she’d lost the love of her life. It was a split she bitterly regrets and she’ll miss him.’ In another cruel twist, Rita’s new relationship with Ricky Hilfiger, son of designer Tommy, has been rocky. The two grew close shortly after her split from Calvin, but in October he allegedly punched a partygoer at London hotspot, Chiltern Firehouse. Rita wasn’t with him when it happened, but it was enough to worry her friends. ‘It was extremely embarrassing for Rita,’ says our source. Rumours of his alleged drug use were rife – he was arrested for possession in 2010 and has posted pictures of what looks like marijuana on Twitter. ‘I think Rita needed to let her hair down,’ says our source. ‘Which is what Ricky has provided. They’re still going strong and have just moved in together. But it’s been up and down.’ Even if last year was tough, Rita seems determined to change that in 2015. ‘The Voice was exactly what Rita needed to lift
herself out of so much gloom,’ our source continues. She clearly loves her new job. ‘I was nervous at first,’ she told Look. ‘It didn’t affect my confidence but did make me want to up my game.’ And she shrugged off any criticism that she’s too young to mentor aspiring stars. ‘I may only have had one album, but I’ve had loads of success,’ she continued. ‘That’s why I can help these contestants.’ ‘Rita’s so fresh,’ Will.i.am agreed. ‘For her to accomplish so much so early is incredible.’ There’s already buzz of a Will/ Rita collaboration, but in the meantime her latest chart offering is with singer-ofthe-moment Charlie XCX, while her second album, due out later this year, is hotly anticipated. Oh, and there’s her Oscar nomination for Grateful, too. ‘Rita is back to her best,’ says our source. ‘Last year was painful but she’s learned a lot and feels better than ever.’ Rita agrees: ‘Knockbacks make you stronger. You’ve got to feel them and grow from them. It’s all about timing. I’m doing what I love and that’s the most important thing.’

lorals and stripes are our spring wardrobe staples, but this year it’s all about working them together. Yep, on one piece. This hot hybrid is straight off the SS15 catwalks of Nicole Miller and Antonio Marras, with both designers blending the two print perennials for one major statement. With each being so loved on their own, the stripe meets floral mash-up was always going to be a huge hit and, luckily for us, it’s just gone mainstream. Whistles have taken it on with a petal print and grey striped dress, while House of Fraser is pulling the look out of the bag with a shift that reminds us of Nicole Miller’s number. Warehouse is going for an abstract edge and Topshop is all about geometric striped patterns with just a hint of floral. As you can see, the formula isn’t strict – stripes can be horizontal or vertical, deckchair or pinstripe. Now that’s what we call a wardrobe update!

They were spotted hooking up last week and spent NYE together. Now, insiders reckon Leonardo DiCaprio could be the one for Ri-Ri

What’s New
T
his is one relationship we didn’t expect to take off! Ever since news broke of Rihanna and Leonardo DiCaprio holidaying together in St Barts over Christmas, sources say romance between the lovebirds has been hotting up – and fast. They were pictured partying together on New Year’s Eve at La Plage Club, have attended a number of the same VVIP events in the weeks since and reportedly even hung out at a mutual pal’s private apartment, away from the paps. Just last weekend the two reportedly got ‘hot and heavy’ at a Playboy Mansion party, with one guest tweeting: ‘Just saw Leo and Rihanna making out while Pour It Up was playing.’ ‘They’ve had a flirtation going for years, but nothing happened until December,’ an impeccably placed source tells Look, calling their Caribbean excursion ‘hugely romantic’. Rihanna hasn’t been shy about her admiration for the Wolf Of Wall Street star. In a recent interview she gushed that his words of wisdom have changed her life. ‘Avoid obviousness,’ she said. ‘That’s a quote by Leonardo DiCaprio. That’s what makes you create something, that’s the excitement, that’s the thrill.’ Though it might still seem an unlikely match, friends of the couple think this could be the real thing, largely because they are both breaking away from their usual ‘type’. After all, Rihanna’s relationships with Chris Brown and Drake were rocky to say the least. ‘She keeps falling for bad boys then is devastated when they don’t work out,’ our source says. ‘She’s making a conscious effort to change the type of guys she dates. Rihanna is really close to her family and wants kids one day. She knows she couldn’t turn Chris Brown into a father figure, so it wouldn’t surprise me if she is looking for a more stable guy.’ The We Found Love singer, 26, has made no secret of her desire to settle down. ‘I look forward to the day I’m going to be a mum,’ she said in 2013. All that said, ‘modeliser’ Leo, 40, might not seem like the most obvious choice for a ‘stable boyfriend’. His past girlfriends include Toni Garrn, Bar Rafaeli, Erin Heatherton and Gisele Bündchen, and he was spotted less than a fortnight ago with a swarm of yet more scantily clad models. But we’re told Rihanna might just be the girl to settle him. ‘Leo has struggled to
commit to any woman in the past, but he is at the age where he wants kids,’ says our source, adding that he’s already introduced Ri-Ri to his best friends Lukas Haas and Tobey Maguire and – tellingly – his beloved mother, Irmelin, who was with him on holiday over the festive break. ‘She loved Rihanna instantly,’ says our source, adding: ‘She told her that she loved her drive and ambition.’ And Rihanna has welcomed Leo into her close-knit family circle too, introducing him to her mum Monica and brothers Rorrey and Rajad, who were also in St Barts. ‘Rihanna’s not in a rush to start a family, but wants to lay the groundwork
Leo’s mum loved Rihanna’s drive and ambition for a family-based relationship up front,’ says our source. ‘Leo appreciated it. He doesn’t often get that level of trust from his girlfriends. It’s really taken things to the next level.’ What’s more, Rihanna’s already invited him to spend Easter in Barbados with her family. ‘She wants him to see the new £7m home she recently bought there, because she wants it to be their love hideaway,’ says our source. Romantic getaways aside, Rihanna is finally finding out how it feels to wear her heart on her sleeve. ‘Leo is exactly the type of guy she wants to be with,’ our source adds. ‘She’s tired of the games and the drama of previous relationships. She wants to grow up. No one knows what’s going to happen with these two!’ We, for one, can’t wait to hear more.

The New ‘Digi-Facial’ Everyone Wants!
Want A-list skin in 45 mins? Get this collagen treatment on your radar

W
ith awards season in full swing, we’ve been on the lookout for the ultimate treatment celebs are relying on to get their skin red-carpet ready – and now we’ve found it! Forget everything you thought you knew about fighting lines – yes, that means Botox – because collagen facials are where it’s at. Just ask the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Courteney Cox, who are both big fans. The newest of the lot, which has just hit the UK, is the ‘digital’ facial. Skincare expert and MD of Crystal Clear, Sharon Hilditch, says, ‘Celebs are always looking for a non-surgical option and this new facial boosts collagen production naturally, so they can avoid injectables.’ The treatment’s revolutionary ability to instantly recharge your
skin’s collagen – just like you would your phone’s battery – is why it’s been coined the digital facial. Crystal Clear’s Cryo Oxygen Microchannelling Collagen Induction Therapy (COMCIT), from £75 per session, starts with a hi-tech, hand-held wand that’s smoothed over your face for 45 minutes, creating microchannels down to the deeper layers of skin. This allows a cocktail of oxygen, vitamins and stem cells to be zapped directly to where it’s needed, boosting collagen production. Collagen is the secret weapon that gives skin its elasticity, but as we age we produce less of it, meaning wrinkles and A-listers including sagginess set Gwyneth Paltrow, in. In the past, Katy Perry and celebs may have Jennifer Lopez are said to be reached for fans of collagenBotox to combat boosting facials
Gwyn says it’s ‘taken years off’ her face
lines, but now collagen facials have totally taken over. We’ve heard Katy Perry claiming the secret to her ‘fresh, glowing skin’ is the similar Intraceuticals Oxygen Treatment, from £135, while Gywneth Paltrow says collagen treatment Exilis, from £350 a session, has ‘taken years off’ her face. And J-Lo regularly indulges in the Caci Non-Surgical Facelift, from £60, which encourages collagen production using LED light therapy. So it’s bye-bye Botox and hello collagen facials. Super-smooth skin, here we come.

‘My Dad Is The Most Inspiring Woman I Know’ Like in the Golden Globe-winning Amazon TV series Transparent, writer Catriona Innes’ father came out as transgender later in life
‘W
hen I first heard about Transparent, I didn’t want to watch it. I thought it would be too painful, too difficult to see. Why? Because the Amazon Studios series, which tells the story of Maura – a transgender woman coming out to her children later in life – was so similar to my own experiences. My dad came out as transgender when I was 20. It was an incredibly emotional time, and I had to watch as she (I make an extra effort to always use the female pronoun) struggled with those who refused to accept her. Why would I want to relive that again? It was still so raw. And I was right. Watching the show was extremely hard. But it was hard in the most brilliant way – never before had I seen such an accurate portrayal of
28
the issues my dad faced on mainstream television. I sat, on the edge of my sofa, laughing one minute and in tears the next, as I watched elements of my own life flash across the screen. I consumed series one, all in one sitting, and immediately wanted to tell everyone about it and scream: “Watch this show, and understand what it’s like.” But it turns out I didn’t need to. The world knows how amazing Transparent is – so much so that it won two Golden Globes last week, including Best Comedy Series. And it deserves it. We need transgender characters on our screens, because there are still so many preconceptions that we have to break down. Transparent does this, and more. There’s a scene in the second episode where Maura comes out to her eldest

It was a fouryear process – she had to have hormone therapy, laser-hair removal and many doctor’s appointments before she could officially be recognised as a woman. However, for me, it doesn’t matter what sex it says on my dad’s passport. As soon as she went from John to Jo, she was a woman to me. I could see how happy finally being open was making her, The stars of the hit TV series and when my mum Transparent celebrate their double Golden Globes win died when I was 19, it hammered home just how important it was not to waste any time being angry with your loved ones for who they are. My one request was that I could still call her “dad” – it wouldn’t have seemed right calling her “mum”. My sister felt the same. And because we were used to Dad wearing her black skirt, and she’d been growing out her hair for a few years, it didn’t come as a shock seeing her for the first time in women’s clothing. In fact, now I regularly borrow clothes and make-up off her – although I’m sure she’d prefer it if I didn’t! Maura reveals all That’s not to say it’s been totally easy. to daughter Sam Sadly, we still live in a society where in Transparent being transgender isn’t accepted by all, as shown in Russia’s recent ban of transgender drivers and the tragic suicide of trans teen Leelah Alcorn, whose parents refused to accept her. There were people who didn’t accept my dad, friends who slipped away and my mum’s mum (who was fiercely religious) couldn’t accept her either, so Dad had to don a pair of trousers and tie her hair back each time she visited her. Then there was the abuse. At the beginning of her transition, she faced it almost daily. Nasty stares, and worse. There was the time when a group of girls jeered “I’m a lady” at her in the street, or the man who shouted: “Look, it’s a geezer,” while his group of mates pointed and laughed as Dad continued walking, desperately trying to keep her head held high. Thinking about her finding the courage to step out in a skirt with hair she’d spent an hour perfecting, only to be shot down, makes me want to burst into tears right now. My biggest fear is that Dad will be attacked. Recently, she stayed in an area of London where there had been

homophobic attacks. And when she visited South America – where in the majority of places it’s illegal to be transgender – I was on edge until I knew she’d returned safely. But these fears are mine alone. Dad isn’t scared and that’s one of the things I most admire about her. She once told me that spending her life in the closet, hiding who she was, was much more terrifying than anything she could face now. The strength it took to come out has made her utterly fearless. That’s not the case for everyone, though. And friends of Dad’s have committed suicide, like Leelah, out of fear and hatred of who they were. That’s why Dad is now completely open and honest about her experiences, whether it’s delivering motivational speeches at LGBT groups or on her blog, Teatrodomundo.com. She has inspired so many people, and frequently I hear from people who say that Dad gave them the courage to come out, simply by being herself. Her bravery has also taught me so much, and I know I’m incredibly lucky to call such an inspiring woman my father.’

daughter Amy, who responds: “Is this what you’re going to do from now on, dress up in lady’s clothes?” Maura takes her hand and says: “I’ve been dressing up as a man my whole life. This is me.” That’s certainly the case for my dad. For as long as she remembers, she has felt stuck in the wrong body – every time she pulled on a pair of trousers or chopped off her hair, it was an act of denial. Now, having lived as a woman for almost ten years, wearing dresses and heels isn’t a form of fancy dress or a way for her to draw attention to herself, it’s simply an act of getting dressed in the clothes she should have been wearing all along. Of course, Dad did a lot of good things in her life as a man – she married my mum, built a successful career as a playwright and had my sister and me. And that’s another preconception – that because Dad is now a woman, it makes her less of a father. But it’s not true – she’s still the person who made me laugh with silly made-up rhymes, comforted me when I was sick and got angry at boys who treated me badly. It wasn’t a case of waking up one morning and suddenly discovering that my dad was a woman; there was no ta-dah moment. It was a long process, with many signs throughout my childhood. First came the sarong on the beach when I was 10, then, when I had my ears pierced aged 14, Dad did too, followed shortly by the long black skirt she’d change into as soon as she got home. It sounds like I should have suspected something, but it was before the internet and being transgender wasn’t as openly discussed as it is now. Besides, Dad has always been a bit of a hippy, so I put these choices down to that. Yes, like any teenager, it did embarrass me – but it never made me question my love for her. I was, and still am, a complete daddy’s girl. Eventually, when I was 16, Dad sat me

‘I Never Feel That I’m Good Enough’
She sings, acts and is starring in Into The Woods with screen legends Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp. So why is Anna Kendrick so insecure?

ntil now, Anna Kendrick has been a familiar name, but not a household one. The 5ft 2in funny girl from Portland, Maine, broke out in the Twilight saga as Bella’s friend Jessica. Soon after came a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for the 2009 film Up In The Air when she was just 24 – an experience she’s described as: ‘Insane. There was a lot of “why me?”’ Such self-deprecation is typical of Anna. Her famous,
refreshingly frank tweets to her three million followers include: ‘For someone with such an intense need to be liked, you’d think I would have figured out how to be less of an a**hole.’ Then came 2012’s ‘Glee with swearing’ smash hit Pitch Perfect, where Anna showed off not only her comedic prowess, but also her brilliant singing voice (who knew?). The acapella number When I’m Gone she sang in the film went on to be released as a proper single – and reached
Hi Anna, you’ve done so much this year already – do you ever question your success? There have always been points in my life where I’ve struggled or felt inadequate. But that’s always something that people have to deal with. You’re never free of self-doubt, no matter how well things are going. There’s always that voice inside you that says: ‘You’re not good enough.’ Too much of that is unhealthy, but at the same time it drives you and makes you want to excel. What was it that inspired you to act in the first place? I actually started doing musical theatre when I was really little – I always wanted to perform and began auditioning for things in New York. My parents were supportive and let me do that, and I did a Broadway show when I was 12, which led to films. Music has always been an emotional companion for me and it’s almost second nature for me to want to express myself by singing. It can really tap something deeper inside you. Despite your success in New York, you moved to LA. What was the hardest thing you faced there? Making the rent and paying bills! Most people, certainly most actors, go through that kind of experience and it’s not fun. I still remember struggling to make ends meet in LA. One of my worst memories is having to bring a cashier’s cheque to pay my electricity bill, because I had written several bad cheques before. But now you’re this huge star! Has it made you more extravagant? I’m still frugal! I drove a Prius for over ten years until it died. Then, I went back to buy another Prius, but a used one, and I had to bring my best friend
Aubrey [Plaza, of Parks And Recreation] along with me to help me negotiate. I was dealing with this horrible sales guy, who was making such a fuss because I wanted to drive the price down a bit. He was playing hardball and pulling all the regular salesman’s tricks. But then Aubrey started getting in his face, something I really couldn’t bring myself to do, and our good cop/bad cop routine paid off. I drove off in the Prius and we had a lot of fun celebrating that night! Almost miraculously, you’ve managed to keep your love life out of the spotlight. What have you learned about relationships? What I’ve taken away is that even if you’re not meant to be with someone forever, you should just enjoy the journey you’ve taken. Even if a relationship ends, or ends badly,
Even if you’re not meant to be with someone forever, you should enjoy the journey you’ve taken you should try to take solace in the good times and the good things about that time you spent with someone. It might be hard at the time you’re breaking up with someone to think that way, but after a while when the pain subsides you can frame it in a different way. I tell myself that a failed relationship is not a waste of time. You always learn something from that experience. Now you’re playing out every little girl’s happy ever after as Cinderella in Into The Woods – was it a dream come true for you? It’s kind of a fantasy. I grew up with the character and that kind of magical world, and suddenly you’re on this incredibly beautiful film set with Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp. It doesn’t seem real at first. I also never imagined myself in that kind of very graceful, ingenue kind of role. But she’s pretty complicated and the story is a lot darker than people would expect from a Disney film. We see what happens in Cinderella’s life after she marries Prince Charming, and suddenly her fairytale

number six in the US charts. Her fashion credentials are looking up, too. A regular top hit on fashion blogs, she recently starred in the festive TV advert for Kate Spade, and meets Look wearing a chic Valentino dress and Christian Louboutin heels. Her career, meanwhile, is about to reach epic heights. This year, she’s got eight films out, including the fairytale extravaganza Into The Woods, in which she stars as Cinderella opposite Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp, and next month’s romantic musical The Last Five Years. Then there’s Cake – bagging Jennifer Aniston big award nominations – and Pitch Perfect 2 to look forward to. Altogether making one thing certain: there’s no forgetting Anna Kendrick’s name from now on.

world starts to fall apart. Not only are you playing this hugely wellknown character, but you’re also acting with the greats. Were you intimidated working with Meryl Streep? I was nervous at first, thinking of how I’d be able to handle working with one of the most intimidating presences in this business. But as it turned out, she immediately puts you at ease, because she understands that her reputation precedes her and she’s aware of the effect that can have on other actors. She’s very friendly and supportive – you find yourself forgetting about her image and you just relax into the process of working with her. It reminded me of how George Clooney had the same way of making everyone feel comfortable when we filmed Up In The Air. You said you wanted to move away from musicals… but you’re appearing in three this year! Do you think you’re naturally attracted to those roles? Ha! Yeah, that plan kind of fell through. I guess I just can’t help satisfying my musical lusts. I was so bowled over that I was offered Into The Woods and The Last Five Years – which I think is musical theatre at the highest level – that it was impossible to turn down those opportunities. I’m not going to say no to working with Meryl Streep! Did you sing live in The Last Five Years or did you go to the studio to record the songs? We tried to sing live whenever possible. It’s more special and personal to that audience, I think. [Singing live] stirs your competitive instincts. Knowing you have to get it right and that you probably don’t have anything left to do another take is another factor, which pushes you to give it your best. Also, I’m just not good in the recording studio. I’m used to singing in front of people – doing it in a recording booth was a little isolating and sterile. As well as doing your movies, you’re in Kate Spade’s latest campaign. How did you find the move into modelling? If I had for one moment considered it

modelling, I probably would’ve had a freakout. Weirdly, it felt a lot more like my day job than it did modelling. We spotted you hanging out with Victoria Beckham at the British Fashion Awards last year, too – are you part of the fashion elite now? [Laughs] Fashion people are crazy! They really know how to party. I was like: ‘How do you all look this good?’ I was nervous before, because I thought everyone would just be mean and pretty, which is such a lethal combination, but they were so jolly and nice. You’re so successful on Twitter. Did you expect that when you sent your first tweet? I love Twitter, although I still don’t think I’m able to be as cool as people now expect me to be. I have an ironic sense of humour that doesn’t always play well when I’m doing talk shows or print interviews. But Twitter has given me the chance to acquaint people with my peculiar sense of humour, and now when they see me, they get me. At least I’m lucky that being a little nerdy is now almost a way of being perceived as cool. But it never helped me in high school, although my mother says that not being popular was probably a good thing. I still don’t agree with that. I would rather have been popular!

Estée Lauder’s new Little Black Primer is like a support bra for lashes! As well as tinting them (normally primers are white which means if you don’t coat lashes with enough mascara, they can show through), it curled, thickened and locked down my normal mascara, keeping it 100 per cent flake-free – a total dream seeing as big lashes top and bottom are seriously hot right now.

Assistant Editor Claire Sanderson did a Boot Camp Weekend at Champneys Henlow, Bedfordshire (Champneys.com) Cost: £350 for two nights, with all meals included. What it involved: Each day started with a one-hour exercise class, such as spinning, to wake us up. Then it was full-on until 5pm with activities including circuit training, country runs, Pilates, Zumba (which I hated) and pool-based resistance exercises. Each day ended with a much-needed complimentary spa treatment. Where is it? Champneys is a beautiful old mansion with a designated yoga studio, fully equipped gym and gorgeous pool. The spa treatment every day makes the stay great value – each massage is worth at least £50. How hard was it? There were ten others on the bootcamp, and our strengths were in completely different areas. I used to exercise a lot, but have considerably less time these days due to being a mum, so while I found the

circuit training quite easy because I knew the techniques, I struggled when it came to cross-country running with a weighted bar. That said, going without coffee was by far the most difficult part – so I have to admit I caved and smuggled in my own! What we ate: The food was lovely and healthy without going over the top. Snacks included smoothies, yoghurt and fruit, while lunch included a vegetable wholewheat pizza, and dinner was courgette pasta with tomato and chicken sauce. There was even a chocolate cheesecake for pudding. Results: I had considerably clearer skin and a much flatter stomach. I didn’t weigh myself due to the camp only being two days long, but I undoubtedly would have lost Putting a different twist weight if I’d stayed on the plank for a week.
Work Out With Celebs Deputy Fashion News Editor Gemma Gow visited No 1 Bootcamp, Ibiza (No1bootcamp.com) Cost: £995 for six nights, excluding flights and transfers. What it involved: Seven hours of exercise a day, kicking off at 7.30am and including everything from HIIT to boxing, weight-lifting, runs, hiking and yoga. Where is it? Held in a rustic, beautiful old Spanish villa, eight minutes away from the beach, it’s no wonder this bootcamp is jam-packed with celebrities. We spent our evenings drinking green tea with the likes of Made In Chelsea’s Spencer Matthews, while Tamzin Outhwaite, Sophie Anderton and Binky Felstead are all fans, too. How hard was it? Of the 12 of us on the course, there was a mix of abilities – from people who’d rarely ever exercised to those who had completed Ironman challenges. I go to the gym every day, so I was one of the fitter ones there, but everybody could do everything. That said, one challenge – ‘the steps’ – was horrendous. We had to run up and down 200 steps in sets of 40. We’d run up 40, then back down, then up 80, then back
down, and so on until we got to the top and had to do it all again in reverse. Much to my relief, that activity was a one-off. What we ate: The food was fantastic. The chef, Kate Whale, is a trained nutritionist and served up delicious wheat, dairy, sugar and gluten-free meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I’m not going to lie – the servings were very small (we were working to a calorie-controlled diet of around 1,200 calories per day) but you could ask for ‘boy portions’ (ie twice as much) if you weren’t bothered about cutting down on calories. Results: After five and a half days of working out, I’d lost 6½lb and 5 inches from my body, my skin was glowing and I felt seriously energised and refreshed.

Jennifer Niven on her new novel, All The Bright Places
Inherent Vice
She’s the golden girl of hollywood, he’s the quirky actor known for great beards and troubling behaviour. a decade after they first teamed up for Walk the line, unlikely duo Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix are back, heading up an all-star cast in comedy crime thriller
inherent Vice. Set in the 70s, following the story of Larry (Joaquin) who is trying to find his ex-girlfriend, the film features the likes of Owen Wilson, Benicio Del toro and Jena Malone (to name a few). and the costumes are just groovy, baby. Out 30 January
Reese and Joaquin put on a 70s show
Your book has already had so much success; Elle Fanning has even signed up for the film adaptation. Are you thrilled? It’s funny as when I was writing All The Bright Places, I was visualising Elle! I always pictured Nicholas Hoult as Finch [the male lead], until I realised he’s probably a bit too manly to play a 17-year-old boy! Why was it so important to write about the dark topics of depression, suicide and grief? When I was younger a close friend of mine had bipolar and committed suicide, and for a very long time I didn’t want to talk about it. But since hearing how the book has helped readers, I’m glad I did. It must have been hard to write… I did cry my way through parts, as some of the moments were my own. What do you hope the book will achieve? I want a more open conversation around mental health, but also I hope the book will encourage people to appreciate all the bright people and places that they might previously have taken for granted. All The Bright Places is out now Winning the part sure put a smile on Elle’s face

My Style File I studied fashion management at London College of Fashion… …where I met my co-founder Lesa. We spoke about setting up a business but waited for a ‘eureka’ moment when we spotted a gap in the market.
My watches are inspired by… …my grandmother. Her wardrobe and jewellery collections were a total treasure trove of beautiful vintage pieces.

Co-founder and director at Olivia Burton, London
…but apart from that it’s never the same. I oversee our Instagram account and love having a dialogue with our followers and customers.
Jemma’s Top Tips lYou don’t need to struggle in
a pair of sky-high heels to look chic – the right pair of flats can be just as stylish. My all-time favourite pair is my Charlotte Olympia ‘Glitter Kitty’ slippers. lThe right accessories can rejuvenate your wardrobe so it’s worth investing in a classic handbag that will last. My favourite Anya Hindmarch handbag is rarely off my arm. lMy love for vintage extends to beauty but I can’t master the classic 50s cat-eye flick. Instead, draw a line along the waterline of your upper lashes. It makes them look thicker but doesn’t require such a steady hand.
…the necklace my fancé proposed to me with. I love it so much that I had a replica made to wear, so that I can keep the real one safe in my jewellery box!
