Material is like chemistry that the mixture of 2 material with different ratio would have reaction also known as effect in architecture.

Material and Compatibility

This is an experiment on matching different texture to form new combination. Different combination of texture may have different feeling and effects on the user.

Rust stain on stone wall act like the tears of the wall. It represents the life of the stone wall which built for a long time and been through every incident. This is to bring the emotion of serious or unfortunates to the user or influence them in the same way.

Rust stain can also represent bleeding effect on the wall where the hole is like the bullet hole while experienced the world war 2.

Tension Between Interior and Exterior

Fully Open Door It gives a clear vision into the space, where this will make people feel calm and not offended.

Half Open Door This is a weird situation where people usually wondering what happen to the door. It creates an intention to people either fully open the door or fully close the door.

Feelings : Clear, Calm

Feelings: Weird, impulsive

Closed Door There are no visual or information from the other space, thus people feel unknow to the space.

Left with Gap A little light leaked from the space, making people curious about what is inside the space. People may only know some hints from the gap, making them tantalized by truth.

Light ray

Medium distance arrangement This arrangement has optimal sunlight reflection, which allowing the indirect sunlight to light up the interior space.

The angle of light ray is consistence throughout the study, this to simulate the same sun light condition.

Short distance arrangement This arrangement reflected most of the sunlight to the exterior. Otherwise, the light will also be reflected between the panel and making the light ray to lost its intensity

Long distance arrangement This arrangement having big gap in between which allow direct sunlight in penetrate into the spaces.

Kwong Tong Cemetery Urban Strategies YS

Urban Strategies

Site Issue : 1.The land is not utilized all the time, mainly for funeral event 2. Communities are avoiding from getting themselves into the site due to ritual beliefs.

Urban Strategies Idea : 1. Creating moment of silence for user who come for tomb sweeping. 2. Time tunnel, underground tunnel beneath the highway that link the upper part and lower part of the Kwong Tong Cemetery. Leading to the proposed site. 3. Bring up the historical value of the site to the communities.

Program proposed: 1. Columbarium of Remembrance. (event : MH370, MH17, Covid, Disaster)

Question : 1. Who is the user?

2. Photography booth to record the photo for annual visitor.

2. How they access?

3.Related history Telling

3. How to make the land more lively? 4. How to bring people of different races?

Urban Strategies Consideration

Primary & Secondary Access

The primary access used for visitor who is mainly accessed by car which the access is the surrounding highways. The secondary access is the small and narrow road that passing through the internal of the Kwong Tong Cemetery.

Node & Intersection Point

The intersection of access mainly happen in the graveyard area. Hence the challenge is to bring outsider into the cemetery space to have activities between each other

Existing Greens

The greeneries in Kwong Tong Cemetery is relatively denser compared to city center. Although, the graveyard zone is slowly bald due to the expansion of land the use for burring.

Urban Strategies Consideration Existing Building & Graves

Space Zoning

The overall urban intervention are combined with three layers of network:

Master Plan

First Layer (Upper layer) : The network that elevated from the ground which the the canopy walk and some elevated resting gazebo. Second Layer (Mid layer) : The network of water cannel route and the usual pedestrian walk way that used to travel around the graveyard Third Layer (Lower Layer) : The network of underground path way which also called as the silent path way.

Urban Intervention - Memorial Columbarium / Landscape

Urban Intervention - Time Tunnel

For the remembrance of victim who past away in disaster such as Covid-19 , MH370 incident , MH17 incident and others in future.

•

A tunnel that link with the north part of the Kwong Tong Cemetery beneath the high way.

•

Also a business plan that might benefit to Kwong Tong Cemetery , where the can offer lower price of funeral service to the victim who is financially not viable after the lost of relative.

•

The access point is beside the World War 2 Memorial Peace Park where they can visit after they browsed the WW2 memorial peace park.

•

The time tunnel is a place for the annual visitor to record their every year photo with their family members, making a timelapse photo album for each family.

•

Their photo can also published in the tunnel and making it as a place of memories in the future.

•

Urban Intervention - Canopy Walk

Urban Intervention - Pathway of Silence

The canopy walks are mostly located at the west which is to promote the program to the community located at west.

•

A underground walkway that connect the proposed site and the time tunnel.

•

The canopy also link several historical architecture, tombstone of capitans and memorial park to direct visitor to respective place.

•

Which often served for visitor who purposely come the the proposed program rather than the funeral event.

Alongside the canopy walk there are also some information board of the history for the next historical place.

•

A dull flush concrete finished high wall which create narrow walkway for visitor, promote the emotion of keeping quite during the walk, to show respect to people who having funeral event.

Zone A Zone A is the main stretch of canopy walk which covered most of the historical architecture and the tombstone of the prominent figure The canopy walk also lead to the memorial landscape which serve the remembrance of the disaster happen in Malaysia.

Zone B Zone B, the canopy walk mainly connect the tombstone of the prominent figure. The tombstone that connected are as following: 1.Tomb of Liang Xiang Ting 2.Tomb of Kwong Chiu Guild Hall 3.Tomb of Yap Kwan Seng The canopy walk in Zone B would not have direct access to the tombstone but only elevated platform which allow visual access only.

Zone C Zone C is the intersection of all layer of network. Canopy walk in Zone C are elevated on the water cannel route and linked with the tomb of Chiew Yoke and Yap Ah Loy. While the Path of Silence located underground to avoid visual contact for some sensitive issue, and it does provide stair to access to the ground.

Water Cannel Route The water cannel flow along the pedestrian walk way on ground covering the most dense place of gravestone in the cemetery. Providing natural coolant to the environment , and sense of peacefulness while listening to the water flow. There are some little stone bridge with 50meters apart with each other. Since the water cannel divided the walkway into half.

Urban Intervention Artificial Water Cannel

The water cannel which flow around the graveyard can serve as a natural coolant for the environment since the land are mostly gravestone rather than plantation. The water cannel may also promote ritual program such as lifting paper boat, flower lantern while having commemoration day. The wishes sent can be collected and bring to a shrine for further blessing. The water cannel also aim to make the site more lifelines by having the voice of flowing water, and the creature brought by the water sources. The paper boat and flower lantern floating will also represent one of our kind, allowing visitor to know there are someone around even though they cant see each other. The model is to show the concept of water channeling in different height of contour so that every part of the water cannel can contain certain level of water and channeling the paper boat and flower lantern.

Urban Intervention Time Tunnel

Target user : Family To record thier every year changes into the gallery, becoming a public album which exhibit to everyone.

Urban Intervention Pathway of Silent

The Path of Silence is the path way that connect the proposed site and the time tunnel (where the targeted user come from). The intervention not only leading visitor to the site but also promote the attitude of keeping quite while passing along the graveyard and encourage visitor to show respect to the people who having funeral event if there are. It also avoid direct visual contact to the graveyard since there are minority that might feel uncomfortable while looking at that due to spiritual reason. Along the pathway, there are some alcove that serve as a resting place which also enhance the sense of strictness in the graveyard area. The model showed different height of the wall and depth of the path, while the protrusion of the wall may act as a visual barrier in between Bandar Malaysia and the site.

Urban Intervention Memorial Columbarium

The memorial columbarium is where the urn of the departed of disaster can be kept. Such as MH 370 incident, MH17 incident, Covid-19. The columbarium design will consist of a space or alcove for the relative to have a moment of silence. The alcove would also promote the moment of silence without entering into it. The Memorial Columbarium and Landscape can also gather the relative of the victims during the commemoration day, this could encourage each other of not being alone especially for those who cant get rid of depression. Not to mention, the intervention might increase the revenue of the cemetery although offering in lower price.

Urban Intervention Memorial Landscape

The memorial landscape is a sub-program that co-relate to the columbarium. There will be some installation such as information board and commemorate lighting fixture or etc. The information board provide detail information of respective incident such as MH370, the documentation of investigation that published by the government, the name list of victims and other information. This also serve as a documentation for future if there are people who wanted to retrace the incident since it still in mystery. While the commemorate lighting is to commemorate the victim whose body still cannot be found, this also to reserve the existence of the departed other than having urn of ash.

Main Atrium

The main atrium is triple volume while the top level is enclosed with glass panel. This make the spaces more independent from artificial light. And the triple volume might counter the emotion of depress from the cemetery zone.

Link from Silent Pathway

The pond water fall on the concrete wall, the movement of water create washing pattern on the wall. The sound of flushing water also making visitor to feel calm after coming from the cemetery area.

Yap Kwan Seng’s Museum

The Kapitan’s Museum is designed to have green roof skylight, and vent block in certain wall. This is to allow more penetration of sunlight that make the spaces more liveliness

Kuala Lumpur Development History Gallery

The Corridor exhibit the history of the development in Kuala Lumpur. The information and history of Kuala Lumpur in engraved on the glass panel. This would allow user to read thru while also allowing natural light into the spaces.

The Corridor exhibit the history of the development in Kuala Lumpur. While going thru the information and history, user may also enjoy the skyline of Kuala Lumpur City Centre. Hence to make them more appreciate to the contribution that build up Kuala Lumpur

World War 2 Simulation Space

The wall of the space is finished by rusted masonry, which to enhance the feelings of World War 2 within the sensory of visual and smell. The drip of the rust can be seen as the bleeding effect while the rust also diffuse smell of blood.

Workshop

The sunken space for the workshop is hidden from the back of the building. Forcing visitor to travel around of the building to look for the place.

Photo Gallery

This gallery is mainly used to exhibit the photos or art that is restored by its owner from the workshop provided. Making this gallery to become a public memory storage. The movable translucent panel can be rearrange depending on new events. The translucent panel also trying to create feelings of memory pieces.
