Microsoft Word 2010 Microsoft Word 2010 is the main campus tool for writing documents. Learning about a few key features will make essay and long document writing much less stressful.
Word1: Getting started with Word 2010 Prior knowledge: None This course will introduce the basic features of Word to give a good grounding in how to manage documents easily. Even if you have already used it for a while, there will still be plenty of handy tips to make you more productive. Word2: More Word. Writing toolkit Prior knowledge: Basic experience equivalent to Word1 This course focuses on writing academic essays in Word. Making the most of Word features to control page breaks, numbering and automatic tables of contents. Excel provides a platform to organise data and perform calculations. Although spreadsheets can initially look confusing, the many tools in Excel can help clarify complex data.

Microsoft Access 2010 Microsoft Access is a relational database system. Tables of different information can be set up, linked together and have data entered. Questions can be asked of this information and reports generated.

Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) exams What are MOS exams? The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) credential validates skills in using the 2010 Microsoft Office system. Candidates who successfully complete the program by passing a certification exam show that they can meet globally recognised performance standards.
Candidates wishing to progress further can gain the MOS Expert credential by passing one of the expert exams. An individual that passes both of the expert exams and two other MOS exams in other applications (eg PowerPoint and Outlook) gains the Microsoft Office Master credential.
Candidates must pass one certification exam in order to earn the MOS credential.

Open Badges What are Open Badges? Open Badges can be awarded by any body and are held electronically in a digital backpack. As well as an image, details of the tasks completed when gaining the badge are stored.
How do I get a badge? A typical example is our bronze Excel skills badge. To gain this badge you must: • Attend the training session • Complete and return a task. In this case, turning information into an organised spreadsheet using some of the skills and techniques taught on the course.

Making an e-Portfolio using Mahara An e-Portfolio provides a place to gather useful information in an electronic format, York St John uses Mahara which can display text, pictures, videos and journals on collections of pages.

Analysing data using NVivo NVivo1: Getting started with NVivo Prior knowledge: None, but this course is aimed at staff and researchers NVivo is a CAQDAS (Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis System) that enables researchers to organise, analyse and share qualitative data efficiently. This course is a brief introduction to NVivo which will allow you to decide if it will be useful for your research and whether to undertake further training.
