What’s On Autumn/Winter 2016
2/3
‘…the greatest art space I have visited in years.’ JANICE TURNER, THE TIMES
Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an internationally renowned centre for modern and contemporary sculpture, presenting work by some of the world’s most extraordinary artists in over 500 acres of beautiful, historic parkland and five indoor galleries.
In the Bothy Gallery, Nishat Awan explores the boundaries and citizenship of Europe, followed by Beyond Boundaries: Art by Email an exhibition which collates the work of artists in areas where political situations and immigration conditions restrict travel.
This season, Not Vital’s extraordinary major exhibition continues in the Underground Gallery, Garden Gallery and open air. Immersive sound works by James Webb are installed in the Chapel and open air. Throughout the Park, Kate Daudy promotes happiness through writings on the walls.
We display four original drawings by renowned artist David Shrigley and adorn YSP Centre with intricate prints and paintings by artist Angela Harding.

NOT VITAL Until 02.01.17 Underground Gallery, Garden Gallery and open air #NotVital ‘Not Vital is perhaps YSP’s perfect match : an artist who really gets YSP’s merging of inside and outside space, of the man-made and natural.’ Emma Sumner, The Double Negative YSP presents the first major UK exhibition by the enigmatic Swiss artist Not Vital, whose itinerant practice sees him work across the world, often in remote and extraordinary landscapes. New sculptures include five HEADS produced with expert ceramicists in Jingdezhen, China, and the bronze series 4 Camels for Yorkshire. Vital has a fascination for materials and moves deftly between glass, paper, gold, stainless steel, plaster, coal and marble, exploring the inherent qualities of each and considering how they relate to place and identity. His works are connected by a simple, elegant aesthetic where white, grey and black dominate, referencing the artist’s upbringing in the Swiss Alps where snow transforms the landscape into a monochrome backdrop. 4/5
Combining architecture and sculpture is an important facet of Vital’s work. He has built many ‘houses’ that sit somewhere between the two disciplines, including his iconic first House to Watch the Sunset in Niger, a four-metre high version of which is shown on the gallery roof. An extensive exhibition catalogue is available from YSP Shop, featuring striking photography; texts by Richard Long and Gore Vidal; and essays from Alma Zevi and YSP’s Director of Programme, Clare Lilley. EVENT: NOT VITAL IN-CONVERSATION 15.10.16 / 19.00 / £10, YSP Members £8 Join us for a wonderful opportunity to hear Vital talk about his varied work and discuss his YSP exhibition with Clare Lilley.

JAMES WEBB: WE LISTEN FOR THE FUTURE 01.10.16–26.02.17 Chapel and open air #JamesWebb
One of the foremost artists of his generation, South African interdisciplinary artist James Webb is known especially for his sound installations. We Listen for the Future comprises four of Webb’s recent audio works presented in the Chapel and open air. Untitled (with the sound of its own making), 2016, fills the Chapel and references the influential Robert Morris work Box with the Sound of its Own Making, 1961. This powerful wall of loudspeakers broadcasts the rhythmic noise of hands beating on doors. It resonates physically and references ancient law of religious sanctuary, as well as the current refugee crisis. In contrast, All that is unknown, 2016, comprises a pair of speakers separated by the length of a room, playing the sound of heartbeats at the threshold of audibility so that they can only be experienced at close quarters, drawing us into an intimate space. 6/7
In the open air, There’s No Place Called Home, 2004–, is a site-specific element of an ongoing project to locate foreign birdsong in non-native environments. It uses a contrasting and mixed audio soundtrack to appear as ‘real’ and ‘lifelike’ as possible. It is especially pertinent in the man-made Bretton Estate of YSP and so near to the home of Charles Waterton at Walton Hall, who was one of the first naturalists, known for introducing the little owl to Britain. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far, 2012, introduces to YSP the calls of jackals from partner organisation The NIROX Foundation Trust in South Africa. Webb will return to YSP as a Visiting Artist in 2017 to develop a new site-specific work for the Park.
DAVID SHRIGLEY 26.09.16–04.11.16 YSP Centre #DavidShrigley
KATE DAUDY: THIS IS WATER From 03.10.16 YSP Learning and open air #KateDaudy
To coincide with David Shrigley’s Fourth Plinth commission Really Good in London’s Trafalgar Square, YSP presents a display of the artist’s original drawings.
Kate Daudy creates written interventions, often in public spaces, based on an ancient Chinese literary practice of seeking to understand the universe through art and nature. Her writings can be seen on schools, galleries, shops, street corners, private houses, businesses, and caravans in a refugee camp.
Displayed in YSP Centre, the four artworks form part of a new body of work by Shrigley. Using acrylic paint and oil stick the artist employs his distinctive combination of drawing and text to create these large-scale works on paper. Shrigley’s quick witted work is usually deadpan in its humour and comments on human nature and everyday situations. Visitors can purchase their own limited edition Really Good from YSP Shop along with accompanying merchandise.
At YSP, Daudy’s writing appears on walls around the Park, as part of a prolific street-writing campaign. The project shares positive, thoughtprovoking messages and ideas, in an effort to encourage everyone to count and share their blessings, to smile and be kind. EVENT: MEET THE ARTIST 08.10.16 / 14.00 / Free (booking advised) Join Daudy for an informal walk, around her newly created works, and to find out more about the project.

ANGELA HARDING: FLIGHTS OF MEMORY 19.11.16–26.02.17 YSP Centre #AngelaHarding
This winter, YSP presents Flights of Memory by painter and printmaker Angela Harding. The artist’s largest ever solo exhibition presents a striking collection of prints and paintings inspired by the thriving wildlife of Britain. Flights of Memory will transform YSP Centre into a map of Britain, showcasing the islands’ birds and animals in their natural landscapes, from countryside to coast, hedgerow to heath. A series of six North Yorkshire-inspired prints hark back to Harding’s childhood spent in the region. The exhibition premieres Harding’s mainly British bird alphabet, a series of 26 wood engravings, in the artist’s delicate and intriguing style, that take joy in the shape, form and pattern of our British birds.
All works in Flights of Memory are available to buy, along with a limited edition screen-printed linocut and silk-screen print – featuring a hare among the seed heads in the grounds of Newby Hall, Ripon – produced by The Penfold Press in Selby and exclusive to YSP. Harding has also designed an exclusive range of homeware for YSP Shop including a cake tin, apron, tea cosy and tray. EVENT: VINYL BLOCK CUTTING AND COLOUR WORKSHOP 11.02.17 / 10.00–16.00 / £100, concessions £95 Join Angela Harding for a unique one-day introduction to vinyl block cutting.

NISHAT AWAN MIGRANT NARRATIVES OF CITIZENSHIP: A TOPOLOGICAL ATLAS OF EUROPEAN BELONGING 31.10.16–27.11.16 / Bothy Gallery #NishatAwan
BEYOND BOUNDARIES: ART BY EMAIL 07–29.01.17 Bothy Gallery #ArtByEmail
Artist and academic Nishat Awan presents an immersive video installation which follows the borders of Europe, particularly along the Black Sea. The exhibition traces a route through the borderlands of the ‘refugee crisis’ narrating stories of migrant journeys and the clandestine crossing of borders.
Due to political situations and immigration conditions it can be difficult to invite artists to work at YSP. Beyond Boundaries: Art by Email gives a platform to those who can’t physically visit the Park and celebrates the notion that ideas and art can travel even if people cannot.
This timely project, developed in collaboration with artist Cressida Kocienski, takes as its starting point the historical connection between the way states represent themselves through maps and how citizens and non-citizens are defined. Awan, a Lecturer at the University of Sheffield, will work with her students to construct the installation from 10 to 30 October. Supported by Independent Social Research Foundation, University of Sheffield and ESRC Festival of Social Science
10/11
Responding to an open call, artists based in the Middle East have submitted artwork via email. The final exhibition may include film, photography, 3D printed sculpture and performance by instruction. A coinciding virtual residency will take place with Azar Othman Mahmood, based in Iraqi Kurdistan. Become part of the project and help to build a sense of YSP by sharing your photos, thoughts and experiences of the Park using #ForAzar
