YSP SUMMER 2019
YSP Summer 2019
‘Yorkshire Sculpture Park is one of the best open-air galleries you’ll ever set eyes on. Fact.’ Kasia Delgado, Time Out
Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) is the best place in the UK to experience modern and contemporary sculpture, presenting work by some of the world’s most extraordinary artists in over 500 acres of beautiful, historic parkland and six indoor galleries. This summer sees the inaugural Yorkshire Sculpture International (YSI) – a free, 100-day festival taking place across Yorkshire from 22 June until 29 September 2019. YSI features new public commissions in Leeds and Wakefield and an exciting programme of events and exhibitions across the four world-renowned galleries that form Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle – Henry Moore Institute, Leeds Art Gallery, The Hepworth Wakefield and YSP. At the Park, as part of YSI, see a major exhibition of sculpture and works on paper by the great American artist David Smith,

YSP Summer 2019 along with four monumental works in the open air by Turner Prize-winner Damien Hirst. Continuing in the Chapel, Kimsooja’s To Breathe, an enthralling installation of mirrors and light, blurs expected boundaries. A display developed by YSI’s Associate Artists opens in the Bothy Gallery, and Tarek Atoui’s extraordinary musical instruments are presented in the Boat House. Elsewhere at YSP, Thukral and Tagra’s interactive and thought-provoking Bread, Circuses & TBD is the first exhibition to be presented in The Weston Gallery. Ella Doran highlights the importance of the circular economy in Sheep to Seat, Fleece to Floor in YSP Centre; and Longside Gallery shows a dual presentation of work by artists Ruth Ewan and Oscar Murillo that investigates the vital role of creative education.

Part of Yorkshire Sculpture International 22 June 2019–5 January 2020 Underground Gallery and Open Air #DavidSmith / @YSI_2019 Pioneering, singular and highly influential, American artist David Smith (1906-1965) is widely hailed as one of the 20th century’s outstanding sculptors. At the heart of the Abstract Expressionist movement, he challenged sculptural conventions and was the first in the USA to work with welded metal.
Primo Piano III, 1962. Courtesy Collection of Candida and Rebecca Smith
This landmark exhibition traces Smith’s unique visual language over four decades, crucially bringing together a number of his sculptures in the open-air that are rarely seen in this way outside the US. Smith’s life was inextricably associated with his rural home and studio at Bolton Landing in upstate New York, where he filled surrounding fields with sculpture, enjoying seeing them against the landscape, animated by the changing light. YSP is uniquely placed to draw out Smith’s fusion of industry and nature. In the Underground Gallery, over 30 sculptures chronicle an unfolding narrative of material, technique and form, beginning with Smith’s earliest painted constructions from the ‘30s which combine wood with elements such as
mussel and clam shells, wire and nails. A strident believer in the need for the US to be outwardfacing and connected to the wider world, Smith’s political stance is vividly illustrated by examples from the Medals for Dishonour series. Encapsulating the artist’s lyrical, linear work from the ‘50s, the iconic Hudson River Landscape is a dynamic sculpture that synthesises a train journey regularly taken by Smith into compelling 3D form. Smith captures the essence of movement and memory, melding abstraction with narrative. Within the light-filled central gallery, his striking larger scale sculptures from the ‘60s reveal the importance of surface and colour alongside bold and concentrated form; an ever-burgeoning output from a life and practice cut short in its prime. The exhibition publication includes in-situ photographs and essays by artist Phyllida Barlow; Dr Robert Slifkin; Dr Jyrki Siukonen; Dr Anne M. Wagner; and YSP’s Director of Programme, Clare Lilley. Event – Exclusive After-Hours Curator Tour 12 Sep / 18.30–20.00 / £8, YSP Members £6 Join Clare Lilley for an intimate, in-depth tour through the Underground Gallery. Exhibition generously supported by Terra Foundation for American Art and the Henry Moore Foundation.

Part of Yorkshire Sculpture International From 13 April 2019 Open Air #DamienHirst / @YSI_2019 ‘The giant bronze sculptures at YSP are where they belong – they’re just made for that setting.’ Damien Hirst A powerful presence in the landscape, Hirst’s ten-metre tall The Virgin Mother (2005-6) stands against the backdrop of Lower Lake. Referencing Degas’ Little Dancer Aged Fourteen (c.1880-1), the sculpture is inspired by educational models of the human body which feature anatomical cross-sections. Here, the cross-section reveals the foetus curled within the figure’s womb. Charity (2002-3), near the recently opened Weston building, is recognisable as being based on Scope collection boxes which were commonly seen on British high streets in the ‘60s and ‘70s. The work questions historic and outdated ways of depicting disability and seeking charity. Outside The Weston, Myth (2010) is a white unicorn with half of its skin flayed to reveal vibrant red, pink and yellow musculature and

Damien Hirst tissues. Hirst often takes religious or mythical figures as his subjects, unpicking and disrupting their familiar narratives. Within a cluster of trees, The Hat Makes the Man (2004-7) is based on a 1920 collage of the same name by Surrealist artist Max Ernst. Ernst’s work is comprised of cut-out images of hats reassembled in absurd stacks, supposedly inspired by a Sigmund Freud book describing the hat as a symbol of repressed male desire. Hirst renders Ernst’s work in 3D, using bronze casts of wooden pallets and felt hats which retain the appearance of the original materials. Hirst will also show Hymn (1999-2005) and Anatomy of an Angel (2008) outdoors in Leeds city centre, and Black Sheep with Golden Horns (2009) at Leeds Art Gallery. Event – After Hours Curator Tour 11 Jul / 18.00–19.30 / £8, YSP Members £6 Enjoy an in-depth exploration of Hirst’s works at YSP with Clare Lilley, Director of Programme.

Part of Yorkshire Sculpture International 22 June–29 September 2019 Boat House #TarekAtoui / @YSI_2019
Associated Matter is an exhibition of new works in sculpture, sound, video, performance and text by the five YSI Associate Artists – Ryoko Akama, Rhian Cooke, Natalie Finnemore, Jill McKnight, and Rosanne Robertson.
Internationally renowned Lebanese artist and composer Tarek Atoui works with the medium of sound, informed by extensive research into music history and traditions, and brought to life through collaborative performances.
YSI is supporting these Yorkshire-based artists to develop their sculptural practice and offering a peer network of regular workshops and crits, alongside mentoring from all four of YSI’s partner galleries and a grant to make new work.
The display brings together newly commissioned instruments and those created in previous projects from across the world. Through this he explores the material properties of sound and its connection to the bodies of the performer and audience. The resulting orchestra of instruments is being displayed at Leeds Art Gallery and The Hepworth Wakefield, as well as in YSP’s lakeside Boat House. These sound sculptures and installations are activated regularly, creating a layered soundscape reaching across the YSI sites.
Event – Meet the Artists 29 June / 13.00–16.00 / Free Join the Associate Artists as they present elements of their projects in the Bothy Gallery, including performance and a short screening.
Event – Shuffle Session 10 Aug / 14.00–15.00 / Free Invited musicians will bring Atoui’s instruments to life through their own compositions.

Thukral and Tagra: Bread, Circuses & TBD
Part of Yorkshire Sculpture International Until 29 September 2019 Chapel #Kimsooja / @YSI_2019 With a lightness of touch, Kimsooja has transformed the historic chapel with To Breathe, an enthralling installation using light, reflection and sound to blur expected boundaries. The floor, covered with a mirrored surface, provides an entirely new way of seeing. By placing a special film on all the windows, the light that enters forms a myriad of rainbows across the chapel. Varying with the intensity of the sun, weather conditions and time of day, each experience of the installation is unique. Kimsooja’s towering sculpture, A Needle Woman: Galaxy was a Memory, Earth is a Souvenir (2014) is also on display in Lower Park. Event – Artist Talk 18 Jul / 18.30 / £10, YSP Members £8 Hear Kimsooja discuss her work, influences and the inspiration behind To Breathe at YSP.

Until 1 September 2019 The Weston Gallery #ThukralAndTagra Through a highly engaging and playful installation, Thukral and Tagra draw attention to the urgent crisis facing farmers in India today. By adopting traditional Indian ‘kushti’ wrestling positions we are invited to consider some of the issues causing the crisis, such as climate change and debt. Twilight interviews between the artists and farming families are referenced in the related multi-layered, hand-painted canvases. In response to the severity of these issues, Thukral and Tagra have set up community kitchens in Punjab. Proceeds from the artist’s limited-edition terracotta pots, available to buy from YSP Shop, will be donated to the community initiative. Within the context of YSP, the project provides the opportunity to consider the shared rural concerns and challenges faced by UK farmers. Exhibition generously supported by Nature Morte.

Ella Doran: Sheep to Seat, Fleece to Floor 15 June–15 September 2019 Upper Space #EllaDoran Sheep to Seat, Fleece to Floor, by awardwinning designer Ella Doran, follows the journey of wool from the sheep that graze the historic landscape of YSP – from shearing to scouring, spinning to weaving, and design to product development. The result is a display of beautiful bespoke furniture, furnishings and photographic prints, all of which are available to buy. As an homage to local products, suppliers and processes, the exhibition highlights the importance of the circular economy in reducing waste and sustaining livelihoods and traditions. It shines a light on one of the most versatile, sustainable, abundant and undervalued of the UK’s agricultural products: wool. Featuring Doran’s Waterlake design – a distinctive and colourful pattern inspired by the movement of water and the abundant flora on the estate at YSP – textile manufacturers,
Camira have created an exquisite jacquard wool fabric which covers a custom-made chair conceived by British designer Julian Mayor and manufactured by Coakley & Cox. Created from one of YSP’s naturally storm-felled oaks, the chair is available in two colourways taken from hues found within the Park’s landscape. The wool also features in a unique floor runner produced by Alternative Flooring. Dyed to specific colours from Doran’s chosen palette, the yarn is woven on Axminster narrowwidth looms to create a luxurious runner, bringing together traditional techniques and contemporary design, and providing a plush centrepiece to the exhibit. Event – Collage and Painting Workshop 7 Sep / 10.00–16.00 / £85 Led by the artist, draw from Doran’s creative experience to produce your own imaginary garden or interior-scape in collage and painting.
Exhibition generously supported by Camira, Alternative Flooring, Campaign for Wool, British Wool, Julian Mayor, Coakley & Cox, 1838 Wallcoverings, Howarth Scouring and Atlantic Yarns.

Ruth Ewan and Oscar Murillo 13 July–3 November 2019 Longside Gallery #RuthEwan #OscarMurillo YSP brings together two projects by artists Ruth Ewan and Oscar Murillo that explore the continued vital role of a creative approach to child development. A new commission by Ewan references the educational history of West Yorkshire and the roots of YSP, while Frequencies, an everevolving global project created by Murillo, in collaboration with students around the world, gives insight into what it’s like to grow up in different countries in the 21st century. In Longside Gallery, Murillo’s ongoing project seeks to record the ‘frequency’ of different childhoods. Working with his parents and political scientist Clara Dublanc, Murillo and his team fix blank canvases to school desks for six months and, without materials or instruction, pupils are invited to mark them in any way they choose – there are no rules. At YSP, the display of
Oscar Murillo, Frequencies, 2013– (detail). Courtesy the artist
over 80 canvases illustrates students’ thoughts, expressions, and chance interventions, creating a ‘map’ of children’s experiences across the globe. Ewan’s participatory installation, Asking Out, recreates a Castleford primary school classroom from 1972. Inspired by the holdings of the National Arts Education Archive (NAEA) based at YSP, visitors are introduced to the pioneering teaching method ‘Asking Out’, a technique developed by untrained Castleford teacher Muriel Pyrah, which invited children to speak out, ask questions and directly engage with each other. Reconstructed as faithfully as possible, the classroom walls showcase children’s paintings, drawings and embroidery drawn from the NAEA collection. Activating the artwork and bringing the space to life, Ewan invites people to contribute to the space and to participate in creative activities echoing those taught by Pyrah, including studying nature through creativity. Ewan has created a situation for people to think about creative education, its impact upon social mobility, and how this can be mobilised today at a time when creative forms of learning have been marginalised from the curriculum.
