What’s On Summer 2014

YORKSHIRE SCULPTURE PARK

2/3

The only one of its kind, Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an extraordinary place that sets out to challenge, inspire, inform and delight.

Each year, thousands of people of all ages and interests enjoy exhibitions by some of the world’s finest artists within the grounds of a beautiful country estate designed in the 18th century. This summer, YSP is delighted to be shortlisted as one of six finalists for the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2014. The winner is announced on 9 July. YSP’s 18th century chapel reopens with an exhibition by one of the world’s leading artists, Ai Weiwei. Iron Tree, 2013, a majestic six-metre high sculpture is presented in the chapel courtyard, while the installation Fairytale-1001 Chairs, 200714, is presented inside the chapel alongside three further sculptures.

Ursula von Rydingsvard’s largest ever exhibition continues in the Underground Gallery. Featuring immense sculptures intricately carved from cedar beams; three-dimensional billowing blankets made using cows’ intestines; and the striking Bronze Bowl with Lace greeting visitors at the entrance of the Park, the exhibition illustrates the full scope of Von Rydingsvard’s diverse practice.

AI WEIWEI 24.05.14–02.11.14 YSP Chapel #weiweiysp An exhibition by Ai Weiwei, one of the most important artists working in the world today, opens YSP’s newly refurbished 18th century chapel. Ai is known for drawing attention to human rights abuses and his own unjust treatment by the Chinese government. He has developed this project, in collaboration with YSP, as a consideration of the individual within societies and histories. Forty-five Qing dynasty (1644–1910) Fairytale Chairs form a congregation in the nave. Originally part of Ai’s Documenta 12 project, they highlighted the difficulties for Chinese citizens to travel, by enabling 1,001 of them to visit Germany. Visitors are invited to sit on the chairs and consider their place in the world. Readings of the poetry of the artist’s late father, Ai Qing (1910–96) – also on display in the chapel – can be heard on the first Sunday of each month between 2.00–2.20pm.

4/5

Three additional works are presented in the chapel. Lantern is part of a series of marble works alluding to the surveillance cameras that follow Ai’s daily life, and the lanterns

he has defiantly hung from them. Ruyi is based on ritual sceptres that gave the holder the right to speak and be heard, the name translating to ‘as one wishes’. Map of China, formed from iron wood reclaimed from Qing dynasty temples, shows China as an isolated land. Iron Tree, 2013, a majestic six-metre high sculpture is presented in the chapel courtyard. The sculpture unites 99 elements of iron cast from pieces of actual trees. Combining both the natural and crafted, the sculpture will rust over time and its installation in the secluded chapel courtyard makes a meditative space that gives pause for thought and is a powerful reminder of the cycles of nature. EVENT: AI WEIWEI: NEVER SORRY 10.07.14 / 19.30 / £3.50 Enjoy a special film screening of Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, the feature-length film about the world-renowned artist and activist. TOM FROST: THE WILD COLLECTION 21.06.14–07.09.14 Garden Gallery #ysptomfrost

Tom Frost’s beautifully evocative and nostalgic work reflects his passionate interest in vintage art and memorabilia – including old matchboxes, tin toys, folk art and children’s books. For The Wild Collection, Frost has taken inspiration from YSP’s varied wildlife and historic landscape to create charming new works. Using YSP’s bees and their honey, the Park’s infamous sheep and Highland cattle, along with butterflies, fish, leaves and beetles, Frost has created limited edition screen-prints, marquetry and wooden toys – all of which are available to buy.

8/9

The Garden Gallery exhibition highlights the joy of getting out into nature, studying it, and collecting specimens to keep, enjoy and preserve. Visitors are transported to a biology classroom, or a naturalist’s study, with works such as old school

charts, matchboxes containing foraged finds, collector’s cards and stamps, made from materials including plywood, vintage meccano and acrylic paint. Frost, originally from Bristol, studied Illustration at Falmouth College of Art and graduated in 2001. In a recent collaboration, Frost designed the labels for bottles in the Farmhouse range of Perry’s Cider – a family run company in Somerset – based on his Birds of the British Isles stamp designs. You can enjoy a bottle of the Tom Frost-designed cider in YSP’s restaurant. Alongside an exclusive YSP limited edition screen-print, produced by Jealous Print Studio, London, a range of associated merchandise, including a tote bag and a pair of mugs, accompanies the exhibition. The Wild Collection is part of #YSPwild.

HESTER REEVE: YMEDACA 28.06.14–07.09.14 (events all day 30.08.14) YSP Centre, NAEA and open air

HELEN BENIGSON: BREATHE HARDER 02.08.14 Open air

Hester Reeve’s two-year project, to re-map YSP as a contemporary translation of the very first university established by Plato in 5th century BC, culminates in a one-day openair experimental academy, Ymedaca, on 30 August 2014. Visitors can join in ‘liberalational manoeuvres’ devised by ‘Guardians’ selected from local groups. Running from dawn to dusk across the Park, the event will come to a climax with a Sacrifice to Athena.

In a new site-specific live performance, Helen Benigson, AKA Princess Bellsize Dollar, explores ideas of weight, body and sculpture as five female weightlifters lift weights alongside the large-scale sculptures of YSP’s loan collection. Each performer is accompanied by a specially designed soundtrack featuring recordings from weightlifting classes, and by the amplified sounds of their own physical exertion.

The artist’s concerns are documented in two exhibitions – The Temple of the Muses, in the NAEA, and Ymedaca Blueprints, in the Upper Space. The groups include: Cantabile choral group, Hand Tool Users United, The Magick Lounge, The Royal British Legion, West Yorkshire Astronomical Society, West Yorkshire Pagan Meet up and Yorkshire Sun Society.

Within the public context of YSP, the performers take on a sculptural presence as visitors watch them at all angles in a theatrical spectacle both fictional and absurd. Born in 1985 and based in London, Benigson is a video artist and rapper whose interdisciplinary practice includes performance, video installation, printmaking, text, sound and music.

YSP welcomes Large Owl (For B) by world-renowned Yorkshire-born artist Thomas Houseago. The sculpture is one of two Houseago works at Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle venues this summer and part of the Yorkshire Festival 2014. The second sculpture, Yet to be titled (Large Walking Figure), is sited outside the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, where the world’s greatest cycle race begins on 5 July 2014. There is further new work in the open air this season by Marc Quinn and Tracey Emin.

With your help, we want to improve our learning facilities, maintain YSP’s landscape and buildings, and continue to present major exhibitions by internationally renowned artists, at the same time as nurturing new talent.
