What’s On Autumn/Winter 2015
‘ If you want to see great sculpture, go to Yorkshire’ MARK HUDSON, THE DAILY TELEGRAPH Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an internationally renowned centre for modern and contemporary sculpture, presenting work by some of the world’s most extraordinary artists in over 500 acres of beautiful, historic parkland and five indoor galleries. In 2014, YSP was named Art Fund Museum of the Year. This season, an immersive exhibition by leading American video and installation artist Bill Viola, presented in the Underground Gallery and Chapel, considers the universal themes of life, death, love and spirituality. In early 2016, see colourful canvases and monumental sculptures in Longside Gallery and the open air by North American artist KAWS.

At Lower Lake, enjoy a unique opportunity to see Poppies: Wave – a breathtaking sculpture, initially conceived as one of the key dramatic sculptural elements in the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London in the autumn of 2014. Over the festive period, take a stroll down Main Street in illustrator Jonny Hannah’s vintageinspired homage to the independent trader. Continuing throughout the Park, Caro in Yorkshire, a Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle partnership project, celebrates the extraordinary career of Sir Anthony Caro; and Bob and Roberta Smith invites ideas toward an art curriculum for a digital 21st century.

BILL VIOLA 10.10.15–10.04.16 Underground Gallery and Chapel #violaysp
YSP presents a significant exhibition by pioneering American video and installation artist Bill Viola. The immersive exhibition in YSP’s Chapel and Underground Gallery offers a rare and extraordinary opportunity to see a number of works by one of the world’s most eminent artists, including installations from the last 20 years of Viola’s career and the premiere of a new work, The Trial. Considering universal themes of life, death, love and spirituality, Viola gives tangible visual form to abstract psychological and metaphysical experiences. He explores facets of the human condition and holds a stark and intimate mirror to our strength, fragility, and the impulses and inevitabilities that unite us. The eight works installed in the Underground Gallery continue Viola’s investigations of the unseeable, the unknowable, and the place between birth and death. His new work, The Trial (2015), depicts, in Viola’s words, ‘five 4/5
stages of awakening through a series of violent transformations’. Inside the 18th-century chapel, Fire Woman and Tristan’s Ascension (The Sound of a Mountain Under a Waterfall) (both 2005) draw on the ancient story of lovers gripped by a passion that is blind to duty, honour and social obligation and which can only be consummated beyond the grave. Especially for this exhibition, Viola has released a rare limited edition lithograph print of one of his drawings, featuring text from the 16th century Sufi romance Madhumalati. A fully illustrated guide with an introduction by Clare Lilley, YSP’s Director of Programme, and an exclusive range of merchandise are also available. Shop in store or online at ysp.co.uk/shop.

CARO IN YORKSHIRE Until 01.11.15 Longside Gallery, YSP Centre and open air #caroinyorkshire
‘And welcome to Caro in Yorkshire, one of the best shows of the year.’ William Cook, BBC Online Presented in partnership with Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle, this major project celebrates the extraordinary career of one of Britain’s greatest sculptors, Sir Anthony Caro (1924 –2013), and his long association with the Yorkshire region. Caro in Yorkshire is grounded in exhibitions at The Hepworth Wakefield and YSP. The YSP exhibition showcases Caro’s rich relationship between sculpture and painting, and The Hepworth Wakefield takes the artist’s thoughts on architecture as a starting point. At YSP, Caro in Yorkshire features a display of models in YSP Centre; large-scale works, from the Toronto Flats series, in the open air; and culminates in a significant presentation in Longside Gallery. Within the gallery, the exhibition 6/7
traces the evolution of Caro’s career from early figurative bronzes and drawings – some annotated by Henry Moore during Caro’s time as his assistant – to the ‘shocking’, brightly painted constructions of the early 1960s. The exhibition concludes with a selection of Last Sculptures, which the artist suggested showing at YSP during his last visit to the Park in 2012. Visit ysculpture.co.uk for information about the free Sculpture Bus between venues. EVENT – PAUL CARO: COLOUR 15.10.15 / 19.00 / Adults £5, students £3 A unique opportunity to hear Anthony Caro’s son, Paul Caro, discuss colour, art and the brain. Supported by

BOB AND ROBERTA SMITH: ART FOR ALL Until 03.01.16 Garden Gallery and open air #artforall
Enter the whimsical world of artist Rob Ryan to discover a collection of charming and intricate papercuts and prints spanning the last six years of the artist’s career, all of which are available to buy.
Artist and agitator Bob and Roberta Smith campaigns for Art for All in this Garden Gallery exhibition. Focusing on 100 years of art education, Smith invites ideas and responses toward an art curriculum for a digital 21st century.
Listen to the World features new works including Ryan’s first ever multi-coloured, limited edition lasercut, Sub Atomic Love Story (2015), made exclusively for YSP. The exhibition also includes The Map Of My Entire Life, 2012 – the artist’s largest papercut to date, at 3 metres wide – along with one of his most popular works, Can We? Shall We? (2010). A special range of merchandise designed by the artist is available to buy from YSP Shop and ysp.co.uk/shop; and there’s an exciting opportunity to join Ryan for an Artist Talk on 30 October. Find out more at ysp.co.uk/events
The exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the history of art education using key material, selected by Smith, from the National Arts Education Archive (NAEA), based at YSP. This includes A.E. Halliwell’s iconic travel posters. The exhibition also features an installation of Smith’s hand-painted notices and eight new sculptures that depict figures central to the history of art education. Smith’s 2013 largescale work Art Makes Children Powerful stands prominently in the open air.

JONNY HANNAH: MAIN STREET 14.11.15–28.02.16 YSP Centre #mainstreet This winter, you’re invited to take a stroll down Main Street in illustrator Jonny Hannah’s vintage inspired homage to the independent trader. Transforming YSP Centre, the exhibition features three pop-up shops made entirely from the artist’s 2D and 3D artworks, all of which are available to buy. Incorporating strong colours and typography, and inspired by Hannah’s love of jazz music, the works are reminiscent of 1940s shop signs and concert posters. A tribute to high streets of the past, lined with independent retailers stocking an assortment of curiosities, Main Street

includes a collection of new linocuts, screenprints and paintings. The exhibition also features Heavy Wool Products Come to McVouty’s – a limited edition screenprint created exclusively for YSP – together with a small hand-painted and printed edition of unique wooden ukuleles. POPPIES: WAVE By Paul Cummins, artist and Tom Piper, designer Until 10.01.16 / Lower Lake #PoppiesTour Wave, a sweeping arch of bright red poppy heads suspended on towering stalks, by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper, rises up from YSP’s Lower Lake, reaching over the Park’s historic Cascade Bridge. The breathtaking sculpture was initially conceived as one of the key dramatic sculptural elements – along with Weeping Window – in the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London in 2014. Over the course of their time there, the two sculptures were gradually surrounded by a vast field of ceramic poppies, each one planted by a volunteer in memory of the life of a British and Colonial soldier lost during the First World War. The two sculptures, created to mark the centenary of the outbreak of war, are now brought to audiences at venues across the country as part of the 14-18 NOW programme. 10/11
KAWS 06.02.16–12.06.16 Longside Gallery and open air #KAWSysp
Weeping Window can be seen at Woodhorn Museum, Northumberland from 12 September to 1 November 2015 and at St George’s Hall, Liverpool from November 2015 to January 2016.
YSP presents the first UK museum exhibition of work by the renowned artist KAWS, who works in a wide-ranging medium, including painting, sculpture, graphic design, toys and prints.
YSP offers a completely different setting for Wave, extending the iconic artwork’s life and impact. Surrounded by 500 acres of stunning countryside and woodland, the calmness and nature of the Park offers visitors an ideal space for contemplation and reflection. Share your memories and stories in the Boat House and join Open Air Remembrance Poetry Readings at Cascade Bridge on 8 and 11 November.
The expansive Longside Gallery features trademark large, bright, graphic canvases immaculately rendered in acrylic paint, alongside towering sculptures in fiberglass and wood. The historically designed landscape of YSP becomes home to a series of monumental and imposing sculptures in KAWS’s signature style – nostalgic characters in the process of growing up.
Wave is from the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red. Poppies and original concept: Paul Cummins. Installation design: Tom Piper. By Paul Cummins Ceramics Limited in conjunction with Historic Royal Palaces at HM Tower of London 2014.
Brooklyn-based KAWS is considered one of the most relevant artists of his generation. Within the Pop Art tradition, he has created a prolific body of influential work that straddles the worlds of art and design including street art, graphic and product design, paintings, murals and large-scale sculptures.
KAWS developed a passion for popular culture in art and design early in life. He pursued his interests by studying illustration at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan in the early 1990s. By then he was already well versed in graffiti, having prolifically tagged walls and freight trains with the letters K A W S. KAWS continued developing his vocabulary conceiving his soft skull with crossbones and crossed-out eyes, which would become a signature gesture. After college, he worked as a freelancer for animations studios, which further catalysed his appropriation of iconic characters from popular culture and comic books. KAWS regularly exhibits in museums and galleries internationally and his work continues to appeal to a loyal fan base as well as the commercial sector. He has collaborated with industry leaders including Nike, Vans, MTV and Kanye West.
