NOT VITAL 21.05.16–02.01.17 Underground Gallery, Garden Gallery and open air #NotVital ‘When you build a place just to look at the sky or watch the sunset, it’s an invitation to dream.’ Not Vital YSP presents the first major UK exhibition and largest museum project to date by the enigmatic Swiss artist Not Vital. Works made for YSP include The Last Supper, an 11-metre wide painting created to span an entire wall of the Underground Gallery, and an exquisite series of works on paper made in Laos and displayed in the Garden Gallery. Vital combines sculpture and architecture in a series of ‘houses’ built around the world, including House to Watch the Sunset in Agadez, a four-metre stainless steel version of which can be seen in this exhibition. Stretching almost the entire length of the Formal Terrace, Let 100 Flowers Bloom (2008) is made up of 100 elegant steel lotus buds. Big Tongue (2008) alludes to Vital’s enduring connection to animals that is rooted in his native Engardin Valley in Switzerland. 4/5
Sculpture made from plaster, ceramic, silver, marble, glass, gold, coal and stainless steel, with paintings in the Underground Gallery convey Vital’s alchemist-like exploration of material, place and identity. White, grey and black dominate, again referencing the artist’s upbringing in the Swiss Alps where snow transforms the landscape into a monochrome backdrop. This summer, Vital will create a site-specific aluminium bridge crossing a stream at Upper Lake that will remain in the Park as a long-term legacy of the exhibition. There will be a rare opportunity to hear Vital talk later in the year. Sign up for updates at ysp.co.uk/NotVital

TRANSPARENCY A National Partners Programme exhibition from the Arts Council Collection 25.06.16–04.09.16 / Chapel #transparency
Responding to the exceptional environment and light qualities of the Chapel, this exhibition shares significant works from the Arts Council Collection that explore the condition of transparency. Including work by Garth Evans, Hiraki Sawa, Mark Titchner, Rachel Whiteread and Cerith Wyn Evans, the exhibition considers how artists have investigated subjects such as truth to material, the everyday or ordinary, and material and psychological clarity. Produced during a period when the demand for truth and exactitude from politicians, corporations and other institutions has been especially evident, Transparency reflects a shifting sentiment in British culture. The notion of transparency is extended by considering the multiple meanings of the word: from the property of transmitting light, being diaphanous and having clarity, to being free from pretence or deceit, of being readily 6/7
understood, and characterised by visibility or accessibility of information. Comprising 15 sculptures, installations and films made between 1978 and 2014, the exhibition includes three works by Yelena Popova, whose practice is informed by her upbringing in a secret settlement dedicated to nuclear research. EVENT: EXHIBITION WALK AND TALK WITH YELENA POPOVA 21.07.16 / 19.00 / £6, YSP Members and students £5 (includes free parking) Explore Transparency after-hours with Yelena Popova, to find out about her work and the pieces on show. Introduced by YSP Senior Curator Dr Helen Pheby.
VISITING ARTIST: OWL PROJECT 04.07.16–17.07.16 Boat House
VISITING ARTIST: EVA FRAPICCINI: DREAMS’ TIME CAPSULE (2011–) 21.07.16–31.07.16 Open air
Owl Project is a collaborative group of artists consisting of Simon Blackmore, Antony Hall and Steve Symons. They work with wood and electronics to fuse sculpture and sound art, in order to create music-making machines, interfaces and objects that mix pre-steam and digital technologies.
Dreams’ Time Capsule is a research and participatory project that began in 2011 and attempts to create an international audio archive of dreams, collected from visitors during public events in museums, universities and art spaces. This is the first time the project has appeared in the UK.
This summer, Owl Project are setting up a temporary studio in the lakeside Boat House where they will develop new work that continues their investigation into early methods of production. Drawing on influences such as synthesiser culture, flint knapping, woodworking and current digital crafts, they will explore how the act and metaphors of spinning thread can be synthesised into music.
Inspired by the Jungian concept of a Collective Unconscious – a level of the unconscious shared with members of the human species comprising dormant memories from our ancestral and evolutionary past – the project attempts to create a source that can be used to understand the patterns that surface in dreams, through different religions, traditions, or geographical areas. Visitors are invited to step inside the mobile artwork and share their own dream.

NIGHT IN THE MUSEUM Ryan Gander Curates the Arts Council Collection 16.07.16–16.10.16 Longside Gallery
‘When I look at sculptures of the human figure I am frequently left thinking of all the things that they’ve seen. This is the world of the silent onlooker.’ Ryan Gander
In presenting works in this unusual way, Gander disrupts the role of the curator as a mediator between art and the public, inviting us to look beyond traditional themes and histories.
Curated by the leading British artist Ryan Gander, this major Arts Council Collection touring exhibition offers a unique view of the Collection in its 70th anniversary year. As an artist, Gander is known for avoiding a recognisable style, preferring to work with many different materials to explore new approaches to art. For Night in the Museum, Gander has positioned a range of figurative sculptures so that they can gaze at artworks featuring the colour blue – a colour which is important in Gander’s work, and which for him represents the abstract ideas often found in modern and contemporary art. The figures contemplate a wide selection of post-war British art encompassing different styles and periods.
Night in the Museum represents the work of over 30 artists including Don Brown, Angela Bulloch, Patrick Caulfield, Jacob Epstein, Liam Gillick, Roger Hiorns, David Hockney, Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson, Kerry Stewart, and Rebecca Warren. Also on public display for the first time is Ryan Gander’s new commission for the Arts Council Collection, As old as time itself, slept alone (2015–16) – the latest in an ongoing series in which Gander re-imagines Edgar Degas’ famous work The Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (1880–81) in different scenarios and stages in life.

NEW WORK IN THE OPEN AIR
KAWS CONTINUES
This season, we welcome Blessed (2000) by Anya Gallaccio to the Bothy Garden. The bronze tree adorned with metallic apples confronts the issue of organic impermanence by taking a natural object and immortalising it in durable materials.
‘There’s something hypnotically compelling about seeing his monumental cartoon sculptures in the historic, bucolic YSP’ The Daily Telegraph
From mid-summer, see Raqs Media Collective’s However Incongruous presented in the open air. The life-sized rhinoceros, transformed into a carousel carriage, is based on Albrect Dürer’s etching from 1515.
12/13
Following the success of KAWS’ major exhibition in Longside Gallery and the open air, the artist’s six colossal outdoor sculptures will remain at YSP throughout 2016. A fully illustrated, extensive KAWS publication is available to purchase and features texts by Flavia Frigeri, Tate
Curator of International Art; YSP Director of Programme, Clare Lilley; and Dr Helen Pheby, YSP Senior Curator. The catalogue includes stunning photography by Jonty Wilde that reflects the changing seasons. Exclusive merchandise, including tote bags, posters, notebooks and a pencil case, is available to buy in store and online at ysp.co.uk/shop
