THE VOICE OF OMAN SHAHD MAAN NADDAF ON A CERTAIN SERIES OF BOOKS THAT IS CLOSE TO HER HEART

correspondence DEBATE OF THE WEEK WE ASKED: What are your top tips on staying healthy during the long fasting hours of Ramadan this year?

R

eading is a thing that is very close to my heart. I can read any book about magic or any other fictional book. Lately, everyone has been talking about the Harry Potter books and, as I like reading, I was curious to know what the books were about and why the author is very famous. At the book fair in Oman in February, I got six Harry Potter books and started reading about the author J.K. Rowling, who is from the UK. She used a lot of magic in these books even though they are fictional books and here are some magical facts about the Harry Potter books and the author: 1. Harry Potter books have sold more than 400 million copies and have been translated into 67 languages. 2. When Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was released in Great Britain, the publisher asked stores not to sell the book until schools were closed for the day to prevent truancy. 3. The author J.K. Rowling is 51 years old. 4. The first Harry Potter book was published in 1998, the same year the final Battle of Hogwarts was fought. Says Rowling: “I open at the close.” 5. J.K Rowling’s real name is Joanne Rowling and she got the “J” from her name and the “K” from her grandmother’s name, Kathleen. These are the facts that made me interested in Harry Potter. If you are a fictional book lover, I recommend these books to you.

Coconut water and watermelon juice can be very refreshing. Ionised salt drinks will also help to balance the loss of body fluids during the day. Avoid oily foods, as these do not digest fast and will make you feel uneasy and thirsty. Suhoor meals should be a combination of carbohydrates, proteins and vegetables to give enough strength for the day. Refined sugars, oils and processed foods are a strict no-no. Eat healthy, stay healthy, and Ramadan Kareem.

ANNUU SINGH

I will drink plenty of water between Iftar and Suhoor. You can also increase your water intake by eating hydrating foods. Try adding watermelon to your Suhoor meal or eat it as a sweet treat after Iftar. Suhoor should be a wholesome meal providing you with enough energy to last until Iftar. Eating complex carbohydrates, such as fruit and vegetables, beans, chickpeas and lentils, will provide you with a long-lasting source of energy throughout the day. Include low-fat dairy products, such as low fat labneh or laban, with your meal and try to incorporate healthy unsaturated fats like avocado, unsalted nuts, salmon, olives and olive oil.

IRWIN SERSO RIO

Don’t eat too lavishly. Instead, eat simple and nutritious food that will give you the energy you need during the time you are fasting. These include fruit, vegetables, meat and water. Simple

exercises (such as walking and meditation) are also beneficial but avoid any rigorous exercises that may drain and exhaust the energy. Remember, Ramadan is a great time to make the spiritual journey a wellness journey as well.

WAFAA EL ANANY

To ensure adequate nutrition, hydration and continual good health, I shall be trying to eat fruit and complex carbohydrates. Some of the foods to be avoided are spices, caffeine and sodium to prevent fluid loss from the body. I will also have food high in potassium and magnesium, such as bananas and unsalted nuts and dates.

PARUL JAIN

Ramadan is the month of rejuvenating our body and soul. The body can be made healthy and fit if the suhoor and Iftar meals are chosen wisely and carefully. Suhoor is very important as it energises the body for the daily work. A bowl of oats with fruits will keep you full for the entire day. Chewing a cardamom ensures that you don’t feel thirsty during the day. Fruit hydrates the body. Iftar is equally important to maintain our body’s equilibrium. Oily and spicy food must be avoided. Limit your intake of frozen food as they have high sodium content due to extra salt. Cold drinks must be refrained from. Excessive eating should not be there as it will make the stomach heavy. Iftar meals should have dates, fruit juices and baked or grilled delicacies. Avoid fried food. Water intake should be more so that the body is hydrated. Ramadan is the month

of “Ibaadat” and not feasting. So focus more on praying and purifying the soul instead of eating lavish meals. Have a healthy and blessed Ramadan.

SUNIL JOHN MARTIN

Between Iftar and Suhoor, eat slow digesting carbohydrates such as barley, lentils, and wholemeal flour that contain grain and seeds. These foods make you feel fuller for longer. Drink plenty of water or fruit juices to remain hydrated. Have plenty of fruit and vegetables. Drink less coffee and tea. Minimise fried, spicy, fatty, as well as high sugar foods. Stay blessed.

properly. Maintain hydration throughout your workout. Lastly, adapt fasting to your physical condition. Prior to Ramadan fasting, pregnant women, children, people with diabetes who are taking medications to control their insulin levels, and other people with medical and health problems, should consult a doctor. Ramadan Kareem to everyone!

ADEEBA FATIMA

My tips for Ramadan: eat real food, not processed or junk food. Break your fast with a few dates, a glass of fresh juice and a bowl of soup. Dates, juices and soups are good sources of carbohydrates and help bring your low blood glucose to normal levels. Liquids (water, juice, soup) also help maintain the fluid and electrolyte balance in the body and replenish whatever was lost during the day. For more energy and vitality make sure this meal is balanced by including complex carbohydrate sources, protein from meat, and fruit and vegetables.

ALI SAIF AL RAHBI

It is important to stay healthy even if we are fasting. The following are my top ten tips: First, never skip “Suhoor”. The pre-dawn meal helps your body to stay hydrated and fuelled up on energy and nutrients. Second, aim to eat at least seven servings of fruit and vegetables every day. Third, try to cut down on sugary and processed foods and fatty foods for dessert. Fourth, break your fast slowly and don’t overindulge. Start with a few dates and water and then wait before starting your main meal. Avoid oils and fats in your main meal. Fifth, make soups a regular item on your Iftar meals. Soups are warm, soothing on the stomach, and easy to do. They provide the body with fluids, vitamins, and minerals. Sixth, stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water for hydration from the period of Iftar to the time of Suhoor. Eight to twelve glasses of water are recommended. Seventh, avoid caffeinated drinks. Eight, avoid deep-frying. THIS IS Try to avoid fried foods or those prepared with large YOUR SPOT! Just send us your picture quantities of oil. VAT APP LAUNCHED

eloitte Middle East has launched the GCC’s first interactive Value-added Tax (VAT) app to help businesses. Member countries of the GCC, which includes Oman, last year agreed on a formal VAT system treaty across all six countries. It is expected to be introduced from January 2018. A VAT of five per cent will be collected on transactions involving certain goods and services. However, the tax will not be levied on education or health care while staple food items will also be exempt. Deloitte said its app was aimed at helping businesses understand the potential impact of VAT across the GCC region. Justin Whitehouse, Deloitte Middle East Indirect Tax leader, said: “The Deloitte app will surely accelerate the VAT journey of businesses

and individuals and will enable them to get in touch with Deloitte’s VAT and customs experts. “The app offers a live knowledge base where professionals can access essential VAT information anywhere using their devices and can get instant and live push notifications of any VAT developments happening throughout the region.” The app is available for iOS and Android devices and has been broken down into different sections. It contains learning materials such as whitepapers, videos, industry impacts, e-learnings, infographics, treaties and local laws to help business people expand their understanding of the tax. A VAT calculator has been included to calculate costs once the five per cent rate is applied.

Chris Fisher, the program director at Merge 104.8, said: “Simon was truly a genuine honest guy, loved by so many as the tributes have shown, especially reading through social media. “[I am] very proud to have worked with Simon and have him on our team at Merge 104.8 for four years. “I’m sad to lose a fellow broadcaster at such a young age of 44 and a true friend.” Several celebrities and radio presenters also offered their condolences to Simon and his family on social meia.

As the Holy Month of Ramadan is upon us, Iftar is a time to relish sharing food with our family and friends. Here, Alvin Thomas reveals some of the best deals around to ensure that eating during this joyous time is no feast of burden

I

t is that time of year that begets giving and expressing love for one another. This period is also marked by fasting and abstinence, during which time we must refrain from eating or drinking from the hours between Fajr and Maghrib. During Ramadan, it is a must for Muslims not to consume food, drink alcohol or other liquids or even smoke cigarettes during the day.

LAVAL Restaurant & Lounge If spending time with loved ones over a traditional meal at a picturesque location is what you want, then head straight to LAVAL Restaurant & Lounge. You can choose to spend your evening in a private setting or join the experience in the main dining room among contemporary and elegant surroundings, where you can also hear live music. The restaurant will feature a sumptuous Iftar with a selection of dishes from across the Middle East, including traditional hot and cold mezze, freshly baked breads, salads, soups, extensive main courses, Arabic desserts and a specially crafted beverage menu. After sunset, however, you can break your fast and eat and drink. Over time, the breaking of the fast – better known as Iftar – has become a symbol of Ramadan and is often a time for social gatherings in the evenings, when families, friends and even colleagues get together to enjoy a delicious feast. We take a look at some of the venues in Muscat offering unique dining experiences that you and your loved ones will relish and cherish during the Holy Month.

Iftar at Sea How cool would it be if you could break your fast at sea? Well, with SeaOman you get to enjoy a delicious Iftar buffet with 10 of your loved ones on one of Oman Sail’s catamarans while you sail past Muscat’s stunning coastline at sunset. The cost is RO25, and bookings require a minimum of six people. But you will need to book early to avoid any disappointment. SEAOMAN Hours of Operation: 6 to 8pm Days: June 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24 For Reservations: +968 2427 4201 www.facebook.com/DiscoverSeaOman; www.seaoman.com

Grand Iftar If you’re looking to indulge in a delectable buffet of Oriental-Arabic food and Laban, head to the “Al-Majlis” tents at Mokha Café at the Grand Hyatt Muscat. Of course, to make life easier for you, the tents are air-conditioned and you can also experience a traditional Arabic band while you break your fast. You can also liven your spirit at Suhoor with your family and friends with flavoured shisha and sweet delicacies. Prices start at RO20 per person. Oh, and before we forget: the hotel will also give you 40 per cent off on your room bookings (Thursdays to Saturdays). CIA: Comrade In America

A Family Man I’m not a great fan of modern versions of morality tales. And especially on those that centre on that old chestnut that we all suffer from: work-life balance. In this, a high-powered executive learns that life isn’t necessarily about climbing atop the greasy pole, and that some things are just way more important. Dane Jensen (Gerald Butler) has been hankering after the CEO’s job at his headhunting firm for years. So when the CEO (Willem Dafoe) says he’s packing it in, Dane beats off his chief rival Lynn Vogel (Alison Brie) and ends up sitting comfortably in the boss’s chair. But his joy at his promotion is shortlived when his 10-year-old son Ryan (Max Jenkins) is diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia. Dane has to rethink his priorities. For all his ruthlessness at work, he’s a likeable family man at home.

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION

Who plays Dane Jensen in A Family Man? LAST WEEK'S WINNER Mohammad Shagir

Butler just about manages to make him convincing. The Scottish actor turns in a reasonably nuanced performance but his accent does wobble a bit. Dafoe crunches the screen as Dane’s amoral boss, a heavyweight with few scruples for whom anybody who isn’t making money is not worth bothering about. But here, the acting plaudits go to the veteran Alfred Molina, who is on scenestealing form here. Pity his part wasn’t a bit bigger; it might have made the film a bit meatier. It’s a family drama that does seem to be trying too hard to tug the heartstrings, and the dialogue seems a tad contrived. For me, the film fails to convince but it does have some touching moments. I don’t like the ending, though. Review by Kevin McIndoe

Tennant), the TV host from Alien Quest, arrives in Pontypandy and soon everyone starts looking for aliens, perhaps in a bid to seal their 15 minutes of fame. Even if you’re unfamiliar with the children’s show of the 1990s, this animation is a colourful caper. We know it’s all going to end well with Sam in the driving seat so sit back, relax and let the kids enjoy themselves.

Aji Mathew (Dulquer Salmaan) is a fervent communist who defends college students against surly bus conductors, digs graves for the poor and likes to help those less fortunate than himself. But when his girlfriend Sarah (Karthika Muraleedharan) goes to the US, she ends up having her marriage arranged with another guy. She begs Aji to get her parents to back out so he has no choice but to go and win her back in the “land of the free”. Salmaan is back with another action thriller, directed by Amal Neerad, and this time it’s one based on true-life events with a nod to Indian politics. Great fun.

Long View WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES This, the latest offering in the most recent franchise, has Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his apes forced into a face-off with a load of humans led by a deadly Colonel (Woody Harrelson). After a battle wipes out many of his peers, Caesar is forced on a deadly path of vengeance that will see him having to pit his wits against the Colonel. Whoever wins will determine both the future of the planet and the fate of their species. I haven’t seen a preview DVD but judging by the press pack, the film’s visuals look stunning and the CGI is bound to be top-notch. It’s looking good, and my expectations are high. SUHAR BEACH

CHILDHOOD MEMORIES AND A FASCINATION WITH A FORMIDABLE FORT PROMPT ALVIN THOMAS TO HEAD TO SUHAR 032

JUN 01 - 07 / ISSUE 473

I don’t know why we stood there watching this but it could have been because I was reminiscing about that part of my childhood, when I didn’t care about what I did and the consequences of indulging in such irresponsible behaviour. In any case, we proceeded to the nearby fort of Suhar. It is one of the most rustic, yet pre-eminent forts in the country. It is also considered one of the most important in the Al Batinah North Governorate as it had a vital role in the formation of the Sultanate. Sadly, however, we were left disappointed as the fort was still under renovation when we stopped by. It has been under renovation for the past two years. There was something very forlorn about the way construction was proceeding, too. There was layer of dust over the equipment, meaning that it was possible no work had occurred for a few days. The imposing cannons that once defended the fort are still standing loftily on the premises but are now draped in an orange tarpaulin-like material to keep them safe from the elements. I have to admit, it did look like a scene from Apocalypse Now (the movie). To get away from all the gloominess, we headed towards the trees that shielded the entire fort. Their voluminous and expansive foliage provided ample shelter. Fawas quickly told me that one resembled a banyan tree. By now, we were tired and decided to call it quits on our (dawdling) adventure. It is a pity that we couldn’t explore the fort entirely but I will make sure to head to Suhar for another recce of the fort once it is up and running.

HOW TO GET THERE

TRAVEL GUIDE

T

here’s something eerily cool about Suhar. It has neither the fancy malls of Muscat nor the gaudiness of a city like Dubai. However, with its lush farmlands, tall coconut trees and stunning green backdrop, it’s way up on my list of favourite places in Oman. Suhar reminds me of my earlier life in Kerala, India. My first visit there (then called Sohar) was in 2007. I was 14 and my family and I headed to a farm run by our relatives. I still remember the excitement, or possibly fear, as I saw some rather raging (and menacing) bulls snort at me. That was also the first time I had ever picked mangoes, bananas and even lemons. But it had been over a year since I had visited Suhar, and I headed there last weekend. Joining me was my best friend Fawas. We initially planned to head out early in the morning but we only managed to get up and running by 10am. The road to Suhar is very smooth-going but can be quite unpredictable, thanks to traffic. The best time to head there is in the early hours of the morning. Evenings are usually crowded with cars and trucks heading to the UAE. Trust me; you do not want to be stuck in traffic for 200-odd kilometres. En route, we warbled along to our favourite driving anthems and chewed the fat on the latest in gadgets and cars. We ate up the kilometres quickly and had already hit the city centre by 12.30pm. Sadly, there were road works in the heart of the city so getting to our usual hangout spot – Suhar Beach – was quite a daunting task. We got lost countless times, and even had to resort to using Google Maps. By the time we were at Suhar Beach, it was already 3pm, and the sun was beating down hard. The humidity levels didn’t help, either. Thanks to the heat, the beach was deserted, as most people wouldn’t even think about heading there on a day with almost 70 per cent humidity. Even my camera lens misted up while I clicked away. Nevertheless, we clocked two young kids (siblings, I presumed) trying to wrestle with a crab (yes, you heard me right). They agitated the crab by running over its nest and then ran around in circles as the crab followed them. In a few minutes, however, the younger sibling got tired and gave up. Subsequently, the elder brother gave up and left, too.

Take Route 1 north all the way to Suhar, exiting at the Badr Al Samaa Polyclinic. Continue straight, turning right at the roundabout after Grand Hypermaket and the beach will be on your right side.

FIRST DRIVE

CARS ADVENTURES

Photos: Alvin Thomas

Alvin Thomas finds the perfect supercar, one that delivers the kind of driving thrills we dream about

L

et’s get the obvious out of the way: this, ladies and gentlemen, is the all-new Ferrari 488 GTB from the humble stables of Maranello, Italy. So, is it fast? It is mindbogglingly fast. Is it good-looking? Yes, better than Emma Watson (seriously!). Is it expensive? Yes, very. Does it handle corners well? If you have the courage to smash the pedal to the metal in a RO105,000 supercar, yes. Will people stare at you? Nope, they would wish they were you. And finally, the big question: is it a proper Ferrari? Well… that’s what I’m here to find out. You see, while we were all busy ogling the Italian marque’s 458 Italia supercar, which I have to point out was my favourite car of all time, the boffins and designers at Maranello were busy rationalising and future-proofing their company – you know, with the whole ice-cap melting situation and all. Their answer? Turbochargers. Yes, folks. What you’re looking at here is a turbocharged Ferrari supercar, the first since the Ferrari F40 from 1987. So it really has got some big shoes to fill. That isn’t made any easier by the fact that the 488’s predecessor – the 458 Italia – was actually an engineering marvel. An instant classic, if I may call it. And with competitors such as McLaren, Lamborghini and Mercedes-Benz breathing down Ferrari’s neck, the task has just become all the more arduous. The 488 GTB draws first blood from its ilk in terms of looks. I think that this has to be the prettiestlooking Ferrari that has ever been made. Granted, with its wedge-shaped and gaping intakes, the 488 GTB looks much like 458 Italia, but with a facelift. However, that is where the similarities end.

034

JUN 01 - 07 / ISSUE 473

While the dimensions of the 488 remain fairly similar to that of its predecessor, the gaping air intakes in the rear make the car look ever wider than the 458 Italia. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though, as it adds copious amounts of character to the supercar. In contrast (if placed side-by-side), I would say that the 458 Italia looks a tad too wishy-washy. The curves on the car – through no fault of their own – appeal to the five-year-old in me. It’s everything I want my car to be: it has the flared arches, colossal alloys, a blacked-out roof, a rear diffuser and, most of all, massive dual-exhausts shooting out through the bodywork. To me, this is perfection only the Italians can attain. No part of the 488 looks mechanical or machinemade: if this car were to be personified, it would be Margot Robbie… on stilts. Now, let us move on to that new twin-turbocharged engine. Displacing a total of 3.9-litres with its eight cylinders, the new engine pumps out (almost effortlessly) a mammoth 661hp and 760Nm of torque. That’s a colossal 98hp and 220Nm of torque more than its predecessor. Oh, and if you

were wondering, the engine screams all the way to 8000rpm. Gone are the days when the engine screamed up to 9000rpm but the general tone of the engine upon hard acceleration is still symphonious. That said, it is more of a baritone grunt and turboswishing sounds as opposed to the characteristic wail we have all grown to love. All the power is sent to the rear wheels through an adept seven-speed dual-clutch “F1” transmission. The gearbox also manages to feel like a traditional automatic without all the jerks and judders associated with dual-clutch systems. The shifts, as expected, are instantaneous, and the throttle response is lightningfast. All this still means that 100kph is achieved from a standstill in a mere three seconds. Three seconds! This is very much attainable, too, especially if you use “Launch” control while setting off – even if the

temperature is beyond, say, 40 degrees Celsius. Do keep in mind that this process is quite terrifying, though. The acceleration, however, is only the start. The handling is beyond words. The chassis is stiff and is very well tuned. The car comes alive in corners and is ready to switch direction in an instant. The fact that the 488 GTB comes with a fixed top only adds to the liveliness of the car. There’s plenty of grip from the tyres (245/35 front and 305/30 rear), and the “F1” traction control system is brilliant in coping with goons and noobs behind the wheel – even in highly slippery conditions. But the “Sport”and “Race” modes should be good enough for normal city driving. “Race” mode allows you to slip into corners gracefully and without any drama but without giving you the option to look silly by going into a spin. I, however, decided to go in without any safety systems to get a feel the car in its primal mode. This takes away traction and stability control systems, and you should note that this must not be done without supervision and proper training (both of which I have). Now, the car becomes a very different beast altogether: even the slightest amount of throttle will induce a boot full of oversteer in a corner. It is incredibly fun if you know how to hold a drift. The car also remains planted at all times, which gives you confidence at all times. The direct steering, which also provides ample feedback (hallelujah) makes it easy to orchestrate some of the most dramatic slides. You can easily chuck the car into a corner and hold your line by countering the drift using the steering. I have to confess: it is the most fun (legally) I have had in a car in a really long time. Stopping power comes from the Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes that can snap your neck if you use the full stopping power from them. They do make loud squealing noises, though, when cold. That can get a tad annoying. The only real car that can rival the 488 GTB in corners would be the Nissan GT-R, but even that starts to jitter after the 200kph mark. Aside from that, I have also heard that the new GT-R falls prey to understeer, as engineers have tuned the car for comfort this time around.

CARS

Mind you, I do not mean to imply that the 488 GTB is purely tuned for the track. The car maintains its civility on the roads thanks to its brilliant adaptive suspension, which soaks up bumps effortlessly. No longer does the car feel like it is hopping around on road imperfections. Sitting in the car, I realise that the interior feels unlike that of most supercars (the compact experience of my Lotus Elise test drive came to mind). Every nook and cranny is wrapped in genuine Italian leather and most panels are soft to the touch. As with most Ferraris, the driver is the centre of focus in the 488. The steering wheel plays host to an abundance of buttons – the indicator switches, the engine “Start/Stop” button, the suspension settings, the wiper settings and even the headlight switches. It may seem a bit overwhelming and much overkill at first, but after having driven Ferraris for a while now, I have found it a blessing to have all these controls within my fingertips. Apart from that, the sport-bucket seats are very comfy and offer excellent bolstering (as expected) and there’s adequate space to store small luggage behind your seats. There’s a “boot” up front, but that’s a storage unit for your spare wheel. You would have to keep that aside if you really wanted to store a few bags in it. Ferrari 488 GTB Specifications: Engine: 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 Transmission: Seven speed “F1” dual-clutch Horsepower: 661hp Torque: 760Nm Top speed: 330kph Rear wheel drive LED headlights and tail lamps Four airbags Italian leather upholstery Carbon-ceramic brakes Cruise control Column mounted paddle shifters Drive mode selector “WET”, “RACE”, “SPORT” Adaptive suspension Sports bucket seats ABS, F1 Traction Control Dual stainless steel exhausts

Overall, the 488 GTB is a very well-sorted supercar. There are really only a few cars (McLaren 650S, Lamborghini Huracan, Mercedes-Benz AMG GT and Porsche 911 Turbo) that can rival the 488 GTB in terms of sheer performance, but even then, it is very evident the engineers have used their decades of experience to create something truly superior and awe-inspiring here. What we may very well have here is the perfect supercar. And you know what? To me, it is.

AIX-EN-PROVENCE, FRANCE M

y schoolboy French stands up better in the south of France. In Aix-en-Provence people take their time, will give you theirs and won’t start talking back to you in English when your French falters (like they do in Paris, but I counter this by speaking in Italian but that’s another story). This Provençal city radiates so many colours, culture, light and a lifestyle that’s so laidback it’s no wonder luminaries like Edith Piaf, Jean Cocteau, Jean-Paul Sartre and, more recently, Bradley Cooper spent time here. Here, citizens and visitors alike amble along quaint, cobblestoned lanes and boulevards lined with baroque and rococo buildings while hundreds of fountains pepper the air with the hiss of their relaxed spray. The city boasts two historical areas; the Old Town and the Mazarin quartier, split by the beautiful avenue Cours Mirabeau. And Aix-en-Provence is well-known for its role in the magnificent careers of artists such as Cézanne and Picasso. With 300 days of sunshine a year, the city (home to 140,000 lucky people) is replete with history yet retains the traditional Provençal lifestyle, and is just 45 minutes on the bus or train from Marseille.

My favourite place The Atelier Cézanne, the studio where Paul Cézanne painted many of his most famous works. So many of the objects depicted in his paintings are actually here, such as a giant window, as well as his (well-used) tools, brushes, palates and painting smocks. Although the artist didn’t live here, it’s still wonderfully authentic and atmospheric. You feel like you’ve stepped back 120 years in time and don’t wish to disturb anything in case the taciturn artist could walk in anytime. The studio is about a 1.6km walk uphill from the town (it is well sign-posted), and you will be rewarded with a splendid view from the studio, and can relax in its delightful garden area. Highlights

The Old Town and the Cours Mirabeau form the nucleus of this wonderful and walkable city. You could start your walk through the Old Town at the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville. The town square boasts the 17th-century town hall building as well as the 16th-century Tour de l’Horloge, an old city belfry with an astronomical clock that dates from 1661. The city’s main artery is the Cours Mirabeau, which is the perfect place to shop, relax, or simply hang out. As a thoroughfare, it was originally a drive-through for the horse-drawn carriages of the 17th and 18th century. Take time to appreciate some of the magnificent mansions of that age that are still standing and deserve your respect, and wonder. In this city known for its fountains, don’t forget to get a sprinkle in your hair from the Fontaine de la Rotunde. It is at the end of Cours Mirabeau in the Place du General de Gaulle and is a refreshing fusion of the neo-classical sculpture The Three Graces, bronze lions and multiple tiers of waterworks. Don’t forget a visit to the Musée Granet, a tremendous showcase of more than 300 works from the Renaissance era to the 20th century. It’s worth going for the collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings alone. The Musée Des Tapisseries is also worth a look, and offers a sumptuous collection of 17th and 18th century tapestries.

Lowlights Petty theft can be a problem, so keep a sharp eye on your valuables. Souvenirs Avoid the shops on the Cours Mirabeau and head to the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville where you will usually

find a market for flowers, books, fruit, and lavender. Any of the city’s markets are teeming with local produce such as sausages, garlic and herbs but the Sunday morning market at Place Richelme oozes with olive oil, fresh goat’s cheese, foie gras and honey. Alternatively, spend your Sunday morning at the Place des Precheurs for clothing and flowers. Unless you’re on a diet don’t forget to try some calissons; small almond-shaped pastries that are something of a local delicacy.

Getting there Aix-en-Provence can be reached by high-speed trains from the Gare de Lyon in Paris (usually three a day), that take about three hours. Oman Air offers one flight per day to Paris from Muscat, which takes sevenand-a-half hours. Where to stay

It’s up to you whether you want to choose a well-known chain (all here) or try out one of the more traditional 18th-century options, which offer a little more character. Some have courtyards and rooms filled antique furniture. Don’t overlook some of the options at two or three-star, either, as some of them are excellent value for money. I stayed in the four-star Aquabella Hotel & Spa, which had a (most welcoming) outdoor pool and lovely gardens.

HAT TRICK Last week, Y looked at summer hair care. This week, we continue that theme with some top tips on wearing hats

A

s the scorching summer heat arrives, along follows the hat season. Whether it is wedding guests revelling in the sunshine or enjoying a summer soirée with friends, there’s a vast array of millinery on show during the summer months. However, avoiding “hat hair” should also be top of your agenda when it comes to planning your look for events. Celebrity hairdresser Asgar Saboo gives his take on avoiding the dreaded kinky, frizz that comes with hat hair, as he offers his styling tips for different hair types this summer.

Straight hair

A look previously favoured by many, the straight hair style is a simple yet effective way to exhibit your luscious locks under a vibrant hat. Admittedly those with straight hair have it the easiest as they already have the ideal texture.

042

JUN 01 - 07 / ISSUE 473

Using a comb, centre-part your hair and remove any kinks with straighteners. Simply wear down or create a low pony tail using a mixed bristle cushion brush. Finally, apply smooth anti-fizz product to wet hair before styling to eliminate any frizz.

The Low Bun

This is one of my favourite looks, allowing you to make a statement whilst simultaneously oozing elegance and sophistication. Every year I look out for this style at various events, and every year it doesn’t disappoint. Create a zigzag part from the front of your hairline that extends to the middle of your scalp, using a rattail comb. This is best on unwashed hair. Apply a mattifying gel to slick back your hair. Comb your hair back into a tight low ponytail, taking hold of the loose hair, wrap and

twist round the the nape of your neck securing in place with bobby pins.

Curly hair

Embrace your natural curls this summer by using Frizz Ease styling foam to create natural movement to the hair. Upon removing your hat, run your fingers through your locks, lifting the hair from the root. Alternatively, texturising spray is also an adequate tool to help maintain volume.

Shoulder length hair

For shoulder-length hair, I would recommend a traditional blow dry, or to add some flow and movement why not opt for hair straighteners to create a flat wave? This can be done by clamping sections of the hair and creating the letter “S”. For added texture, a little salt spray goes a long way.
