NOTE

Welcome to Y Magazine – your top guide to the best of Oman every week.

Fast forward

A

s we enter the final eight or so days of Ramadan, it’s important not to lose sight of staying as healthy as possible while fasting. But on the flip side, did you know that there are health benefits that can be gained during fasting? While much of the focus is about protecting our health while we fast during the Holy Month, the experts at Burjeel Hospital, Muscat, say there are advantages to be gained, such as the breaking down of fats in our bodies that can lead to weight-loss – but that is, of course, only if we are not over-eating in the evenings. It’s an interesting story and one based on medical studies that have also found that fasting can lead to a reduction in blood pressure and stress, which can only be a good thing. Elsewhere, we continue our fun Spirit of Ramadan competitions, wrap up our twopart series on Jebel Akhdar in Destination and take the Ford Explorer out for a spin in First Drive. Have a great week!

THE VOICE OF OMAN NISHAD PADIYARATH ON WHY CHILDREN SHOULD READ MORE BOOKS

correspondence DEBATE OF THE WEEK WE ASKED:

W

hen was the last time your child read a book? There is a serious decline in reading habits among children due to technological developments. While technology is slowly taking steady control over individual lives, the reading culture is fast vanishing into thin air. Students now lack the skill of reading. Instead they spend more hours on electronic media. Browsing the net, playing with funky handsets and writing non-stop WhatsApp messages seem to be the order of the day. Parents feel obligated to buy new technology to ensure their children “keep up” and it seems money is no object, even in financially challenged homes. So, where children might once have picked up a book, now screens fill their time. The result is that those moments when reading took root and flourished are diminishing. How can you improve the habit of reading among children? The rule is simple: instead of buying them electronic gadgets, buy them more books and inculcate reading habits. From childhood, I was always fascinated to read fiction and even today I anxiously wait to read a new book when it is launched. I think reading is about escaping and being able to live in another world and almost everyone who reads wants to become an author – myself included – so that they can create their own worlds and adventures. So what are you waiting for? Go to the nearest bookstore, buy books your children will love and make them read.

The recent kidnapping of a teenage girl (who has since been located by the Royal Oman Police) has put the dangers of social media in the spotlight. What safety guidelines have you put into place for your children to follow to ensure their safety online? AFIFA NAVREEN

For the past three or four years, social networking has been the buzzword. Teenage and early adulthood is the time where we are growing out of the secure cocoons of home and begin to face the world. It is critical that your teenager feels safe in talking to you, because fear of punishment can result in isolated or rebellious behavior. It’s important that you understand and respect them while letting them know they can talk to you about anything. Parents must make sure that their children are informed about the threats posed by social media. It’s not about preventing teenagers from using social media but using social media safely, as it offers benefits too, such as keeping them informed about the world.

RONNEIL SALES VALIENTE

Internet and social media play a major part in the lives of the younger generation, especially children, today. As with any safety issue, it’s wise to talk with your children about your concerns of staying safe online, and keep a close eye on their activities. Simple tips include: Firstly, be involved. Consider some activities you can work on together whether it be playing a game or researching a topic for school. This will allow you to supervise your child’s online activities while teaching him good computer habits. Second, set rules and warn about the dangers. Make sure your child knows the boundaries of what he is allowed to do on the computer or iPad. These

limits should be appropriate for the child’s age, knowledge, and maturity. You should talk to your children about the dangers of the internet and social media so that they can recognise suspicious behaviour or activity. Remind them not to share personal information, pictures, and passwords to anyone without your permission. Third, monitor computer activity. Be aware of what your child is doing on the computer, including what websites he is visiting. If he is using email, instant messaging or chat rooms, try to get a sense of who he is corresponding with and whether he actually knows them. Fourth, keep lines of communication open. Let your child know that he can approach you with any questions or concerns about behaviour or problems he may have encountered on the internet and social media. Lastly, consider implementing parental controls. You can set some parental controls within your browser. We should not forget that it is our responsibility as parents to guide and protect our children online.

USHA DEVI SUDDAPALLI

Ensuring the online safety of children is a vital issue that seems to be arduous, as online gadgets have become mainstream in these IT-savvy days. I feel that children should be addressed at a tender age on this subject, following a known plan of action like SMART. Since the present generation likes to question everything, their elders should S – speak to them about following safety guidelines and make them aware of the consequences. Next is M – make them understand how to follow safe

steps. Next is A – make them accept that you are responsible for them. Next step is R– respect their interests, and refrain from being too draconian. Last, but not the least, T– track their online use all the time so that they don’t get trapped or become victims.

MOHAN ANANDAN

The recent incident kidnapping incident has once again brought to light the perils of social media. Besides keeping an eye on their social media “outings”; as parents, we need to discuss with our children the pros and cons and dos and don’ts of overexposure to social media. Very often, the lack of sufficient parental attention and the non-existence of an effective outlet for their concerns make some children vulnerable. We need to make quality time for our children, don the hat of a friend and earn their confidence to share and discuss their fears and problems.

ABDUL SALEEM

There must be continual assessment by parents since children haven’t got the ability to judge what is right and wrong. Parents must check their child’s computer, tablet or smartphone. They can remind their children to avoid any unknown links while talking to kids about potential problems that may occur when using the internet.

them the need for having different passwords for different social networks, and to constantly update their private settings. Enforcing age-appropriate boundaries and engaging your children in plain discussion can encourage young ones to accept the benefits of these controls and measures.

New Debate: Are you planning to go away for the Eid break? If so, have you found that airfares are too expensive? Share your view with us and you could be in with a chance of winning dinner for two.

To avoid being conned on social media it is vital we educate our children about interacting with individuals they don’t know. We should treat our children like our friends so that they should not be afraid to discuss any of their problems with us. Our children can be misguided by outsiders and unknown ones on social media only when our children feel neglected at home.

ANDREI AND JAMIL JON were spotted with their favourite Y Magazine in Muscat

JESSE ESTANDARTE

You tell your children not to talk to strangers so the same has to apply online. Be a friend to your children but stress to them that anyone who communicates through social media applications must be made known to them as well. Mobile phones should also be monitored as well. Routine checking of devices is also a good idea. Be vigilant, ready and anticipate.

JASON FELIX NORONHA

We as parents need to play a vital role in helping our kids understand the benefits as well as the dangers of the internet. Children absorb everything in a flash. We can and should act as their online friend and support them 24/7 , guiding them on their needs and ready to support them if they falter. The big, bad world is out there at the touch of a button. The decision rests on us whether we click the right button.

DR RAO BHASKARA SUDDAPALLI

In these days of nuclear families, it has become a Herculean task to keep an eagle eye on children all the time. The only way is to talk, explain and impress upon them the need for adopting control measures to ward off the possible dangers of online usage. Make them aware and then take them into your confidence. Enforce steps like child locks, parental controls, and ensure they are adhered to. Impress on

TEMPERATURES

TOP 50°C

heatwave has hit some of Oman’s interior and desert regions this week, causing temperatures to rise above the 50°C mark. According to the National Multi Hazard Early Warning Centre, temperatures rose to 52°C in some areas after westerly winds blew in to Oman from the Arabian Desert. Rob Richards, a meteorologist from Accuweather, a US firm that provides weather forecasting services worldwide, told Y that the heat in Oman was at its peak in June. Mr Richards said: “This is because the winds are originating from the Arabian Desert, as opposed to the sea. And as we can see, the high pressure area is currently observed over the desert area. “This, particularly, has caused some inconvenience to those fasting during the Holy Month.” Najeeb Saleh, a sub-contractor for a telecommunications company in Oman, said he had to let his staff rest for a day to escape the heat. “Most of our labourers are fasting, and we had to re-schedule to working at night to avoid the heat but the temperatures were high at night, too,” said Mr Saleh. Temperatures in Muscat governorate currently stand at around 40°C but many residents feel the readings are too low. Tyler Roys, another meteorologist from Accuweather, has warned residents over the risk of heat exposure. He said: “People living around the capital and other urban areas

must take special care not to expose themselves to the heat as they can come under the ‘urban heat island’ effect. “This is when cities or urban areas are significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas due to accumulated heat from buildings, roads and pavements.” But there is some relief in sight. Temperatures were expected to drop to 40°C by Friday, the National Multi Hazard Early Warning Centre said. Mr Richards added that there were no lowpressure points over the Indian Ocean that could lead to a tropical depression or cyclone over the coming weeks.

E-VISA FACILITIES NOW AVAILABLE FOR FIRMS

one are the days of waiting in a queue for companies applying for visas. The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has launched an e-visa application system for applying for visas. The only requirement is for companies to be registered with the ROP’s system. Company staff can register for the visas through the website, evisa.rop.gov.om, and present an accreditation request. Following this, a firm’s representative must visit the Directorate General of Passports and Residence to present original documents. The e-visa services don’t end there, as individuals now have the option to apply online for a tourist visa to visit the Sultanate. The portal also aims to act as a unified source for all information regarding the visa system for Oman.

ROGUE DRIVING INSTRUCTORS FACE FINES AND JAIL D riving instructors who abuse, exploit and steal from learner drivers face possible prison terms. Oman’s prosecutors have warned driving instructors that they face fines of RO2,000 and a year in jail if found guilty of assault or malpractice. Y has learned of provisional drivers being hit, sworn at and ripped off by instructors in the Sultanate. And complaints brought by learner drivers have prompted the Sultanate’s judicial authority to take action. Suraj Dutta, an employee at an engineering company in Oman, said his instructors had breached the contract he had agreed with them. After signing up and paying his money, his instructors failed to show up and told him that they were away from his area of Wadi Kabir. He said: “I began the driving test process early in 2016 but am yet to settle down with an honest driver. “I have had three driving instructors, and they made me sign a contract that assured me a licence in three months’ time. “The first two contracts cost me RO400, and the last, RO250. “I would wait for weeks before finally realising that one had taken off with my money and driving booklet. “This happened twice, and the third time around, I had to pull my

booklet from the instructor as he used to abuse me in Arabic and hit me if I made a mistake.” In a recent tweet, Oman’s Public Prosecution said: “Dear Driving Instructor: Your breach of the agreed-upon obligations for a driving education service with the trainee is punishable by imprisonment for up to a year, and a fine of RO2,000.” A Royal Oman Police (ROP) spokesman said: “Any complaints regarding driving instructors can be forwarded to the Public Authority of Consumer Protection (PACP). You can register a complaint with us if you feel your teacher is physically harming you.” One South African expatriate, who declined to be named, told Y she had not been granted her licence because her instructor wanted her to pay RO500 after telling her she was “not ready for the road”. She said: “I passed my road test in March this year. It was a very long ordeal as I had taken numerous classes prior to my test. But when I asked for the instructor to give me my book, he refused to give it to me. “He said that I had to give him RO500 for getting my book back. That’s not fair, but when I did give him a call to give him the money, he did not respond.” An official from the PACP said: “With regards to the PACP, cases such as these would go under a case-by-case basis.”

Wonder Woman Diana (Gal Gadot) is a woman of substance. In her tribe of peace-loving female warriors she has been living in splendid isolation from the human race she has been sworn to protect. When American pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes in to disrupt her daily routine, she ends up being drawn into the menace and mayhem of the First World War. But in this, the sobriquet of Wonder Woman has never been so apt. This amazon warrior princess can handle any man who messes with her and at no time does she actually have to act like one. Diana proves a woman CAN do a man’s job although her lustrous locks shimmy through the air so often it’s almost like watching a shampoo commercial. And she is pretty easy on the eye whether in civvies or in her captivating, combat-ready costume. Steve is a dude in distress but Diana has got his number in more ways than

one. There’s enough of a fun-filled frisson between the two that recalls the Clark Kent/Lois Lane double act in the Superman movies. Except this time, Pine is the one smitten with the superhero. With the slew of Marvel-based movies in recent years, such as Man of Steel or Batman V Superman, this actually is a game-changer, in more ways than one. It might seem odd to set the film during the First World War. Perhaps director Patty Jenkins is giving a nod to a female sense of empowerment, particularly in an era when women didn’t even have the right to vote. She could also be hinting at the puerile tendencies of (male) politicians that led to the war in the first place. Either way, it doesn’t matter. This is a captivating concoction of mega-action, romance and humour, and doesn’t insult your intelligence. Definitely one for the ages. Review by Kevin McIndoe

Any sports star will get to a stage in his career when he feels he is at the end of the road. So when erstwhile race champ Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) finds himself being edged out by new kid Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer) he is in a race against time to prove he’s still got it. Worse is to follow as Lightning finds out, at the next meet, that all the veterans’ places

have been taken up by their newer, faster and hungrier rivals. Can he (literally) get back on track? Wonderful animated fun, and you don’t have to be an F1 fanatic or a fan of Top Gear to enjoy.

Deep Deep, an intrepid octopus, is one of a colony of sea creatures who lives in the deepest abyss of the ocean with his two friends Evo, a fish; and Alice, a deep-sea shrimp. It is 2100 and humanity has left the earth. When Deep and Co’s home is destroyed by an accident, the boss of their colony sends them away to find a new home. After hooking up with Maura, an eel, the trio’s search throws up encounters with the submerged New York City and the Titanic. With a series of perilous and funny episodes on the way, can they bring the ocean back to its former glory? Your younger ones will enjoy it.

Long View THE HOUSE Once again, I haven’t seen a preview DVD of this comedy. When a father (Will Ferrell) spends his daughter’s college fund, he convinces his friends to start a gambling den in the basement of his house. I don’t find the idea of a couple blowing their daughter’s college fund particularly funny but maybe I’m having a sense of humour bypass. And for a film to attempt to derive humour out of a habit that brings misery and ruin to millions, well, that’s just warped. The odds are not in its favour; let’s leave it at that. A revised luxurious interior clearly underscores the exterior flair of the coupé and exemplifies high-end ambience. Distinctive stylistic elements of the GLC Coupé’s interior are the dashboard and the centre console with flowing lines and a semi-integrated media display, offering unmatched comfort.

FEATURES ● DYNAMIC SELECT and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive ● 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission ● Head-up Display ● Collision prevention assist ● Intelligent LED headlamps

● 20-inch AMG light-alloy wheels ● Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC ● Touchpad with media interface ● Ambient lighting in three colours

The all-new GLC Coupé is a welcome addition to Mercedes’ SUV line-up. It looks and feels unique, and has a very jazzy character unlike many luxury SUVs of today. Of course, much of that can be attributed to that striking AMG body kit the GLC Coupé comes fitted with. It really has to be felt to be believed.

birds that call Jebel Akhdar home. We spotted a few butterflies on our walk, numerous birds and a lone lizard hiding under a rock. Our first port of call was a viewing platform that provided a fantastic backdrop for quite a few selfies and a stunning view of the canyon below. By this time, we were definitely feeling the heat, but kept reminding ourselves that we wouldn’t even consider doing this hike in Muscat! The walk takes about 90 minutes to complete but we felt that we had walked a lot farther than the 2.6km. But perhaps that was because there was so much to do and see along the walk. We did have one mishap along the way, with Erin falling over and sustaining a nasty cut to her knee. But the resident nurse was on the scene very quickly and we were back on our way in no time. The scenery was amazing, with gnarled, isolated trees defying the odds and continuing to grow, while we spotted juniper trees and wild olive trees, wild flowers, large yellow berries and walked through the hotel’s organic vegetable garden. It was a fun adventure and a wonderful way for the girls (and adults!) to learn more about Jebel Akhdar, not to mention escaping from the heat of the city to get some fresh mountain air and some decent exercise.

Need to know:

The Butterfly Trail is offered to Alila Jabal Akhdar’s hotel guests and their children. For reservations, email: jabalakhdar@alilahotels.com, or call: 2534 4200 / 9910 4204.

HOW TO GET THERE

TRAVEL GUIDE

I

t’s mid-afternoon and we are headed farther up the Green Mountain to Alila Jabal Akhdar, where we will be taking on the Butterfly Trail – a 2.6km adventure hike that has been especially designed by the hotel for their younger guests and parents. If you caught our Destination feature in last week’s issue then you will know that this is my first time on Jebel Akhdar and we’d already spent the morning exploring Diana’s Point and other places. The sun is at its peak but the temperature is still much cooler than it is in Muscat so we figured it was a perfect time to tackle the trail and all that it has to offer. As we whizzed by mountain villages, small wadis and looming cliff faces, the stunning scenery of the mountain continued as we climbed steep rises and navigated sharp curves. Finally at the hotel, we had no idea what we would be facing. But our host, Ami, who is also the Alilia’s spa director, suggested a cool drink and a quick sunscreen session before heading out to the trail. The delicious fresh pomegranate, mint and grape juices refreshed us and sharpened our minds, while my daughter Cia and her two friends, Erin and Leah, slathered on the sunscreen. Maps in hand, we headed off to follow a marked trail decorated with butterflies – plain yellow to stay on course and another design with red dots on it to warn us to keep an eye out for insects or small wildlife. With the girls in the lead, we began our adventure that took us along a rocky trail that offered incredible views over a huge canyon. The aim of the walk is to introduce children and their parents to their surroundings, where they can learn a wealth of information about the mountain and its “inhabitants”. There’s a range of fun activities along the way, such as climbing frames, viewing platforms, swings, a chance to drink water from Oman’s traditional jahlah, or terracotta water jugs, a spot of jousting and other balancing games. All the while, you are on the lookout for geological markers that indicate the rise and fall of the ocean before Jebel Akhdar was pushed 2,000 feet above sea level, as well as fossils that are millions of years old. At the same time, you will be treated to a magical dance of butterflies as they flutter by, or perhaps one of the 40 species of

From Muscat, join route 15 from the Clock Tower roundabout and head towards Nizwa. Take the exit to Izki and follow the road. There are signs to Jebel Akhdar, when you reach the police security checkpoint, you will need to stop. If you are not driving a 4x4, you won’t be allowed to proceed any farther.

So, when a vehicle adorns a nametag such as that, it should be special and, quite frankly, extraordinary. It should be a vehicle that can scale deserts and tackle strong wadis. It should be a vehicle that can rescue itself from adversities and forge new paths as it goes along. In short: it should be a true explorer. So, what exactly then is the “Explorer” nametag doing on a three-row, seven-seater crossover SUV? The Explorer has quite a past. Google images of the SUV and you will see pictures of it scaling unbelievable terrains with ease. The SUV was so loved that it was featured countless times in movies and TV-series. This was the liberating American SUV of the early 1990s; the one that embodied the sports-utility vehicle culture into the hearts – and minds – of Americans… and subsequently, the whole world. But many moons have passed since then and what I am looking at today is the fifth-generation (facelifted in 2016) Explorer. Yes, upon first glance, it looks nothing like any of its predecessors but is still pretty impressive. Let’s start with the front fascia: flanked by two macho-looking headlamps, the Explorer takes a sharp turn from that of its rather mellow trucklet forerunner. This carries forward to the bold and striking fog lamps and chunky yet fashionable bumper. The latter is finished in three colour tones of gun metal (body colour), black and silver! Even the skid plate to protect that crank case and axle is exposed to give it that added macho-esque stance. In comparison, the Explorer comes with a long wheelbase, wide stance (almost sports car wide) and

034

JUN 15 - 21 / ISSUE 475

handsome proportions to counter that macho front. However, the side profile and the rear – including the tail lamps – are carried over from its predecessor. Even then, the SUV rides considerably low (though not entirely) and is incredibly easy to get in and out of. The interior is carried over, this year, with no changes, either. However, the cabin materials have taken a turn for the better as there are now more softtouch surfaces on the dashboard, window sills and armrests. Oh and there’s mood lighting, too. But the biggest change has to be the slick “MyFord Touch” touchscreen with SYNC3. It helps control the audio, which is channelled through a brilliant 12-speaker Sony sound system; Bluetooth; ventilated seats; massage functions and even the air-conditioner settings. As with new Fords, the dashboard has physical buttons as opposed to those dreadful light-sensitive ones from previous years. You can use these buttons to take control of the air conditioning, audio settings and even the self-parking functions. The seats meanwhile are all clad in faux leather and are mildly bolstered. Mind you, it is still miles better than in some other American SUVs on the market today. But, the driving position is quite low, and that combined with the long front hood means it is quite hard to see out of if you are under 182cm

tall. Of course, you can work around that by simply hoisting your seat all the way up or making use of the front cameras. Space throughout the cabin is plentiful. The legroom in the second row is infinitely better than those of its rivals from Asia and the third row is anything but above average in space. I found myself (being the healthy man I am) extremely comfortable although head room in the third-row could have been a tad better. Still, I did not feel claustrophobic at all but if you do, there’s a panoramic sunroof that covers the length of the SUV. The space in the boot is quite good when the third row is hunkered down. However, there’s a 60:40 split available in the second-row seats should you need to cram in irregularly shaped goods. Meanwhile, the third-row seats can be stowed or deployed using buttons placed strategically in the boot. Underneath the hood of the Explorer lies a well-

tuned 3.5-litre V6 pumping out 290hp and 346Nm of torque. It is mated to a traditional six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels. This is good enough to sprint the Explorer from zero to 100kph in well under 10 seconds. The torque is available at its peak at well under 4,000rpm, which makes city commutes quite a breeze. However, you will have to rev the engine up to 6,500rpm to make the most of the power at higher speeds. Even then, this has to be one of the faster SUVs currently out there. Overtaking is a breeze, thanks to the clever gearbox, which kicks down efficiently and holds gears while still maintaining decent fuel economy. If you need more control of the gearbox you can also take the steering-mounted paddles. The gear shifts using the paddles may not be as slick as those found in the dual-clutch gearboxes of today but it is still quite hasty. On the plus side, the engine does sound rather good, with plenty of gruff at high revs. The Explorer handles corners rather well, especially when offroad. Of course, there’s a generous amount of body roll when you push things past its threshold but you’ll still have to ravage the steering (figuratively) to actually cause any form of disturbance in the balance of the vehicle. Still, comparing it to most its rivals from America, the Explorer does exceptionally well. There are generous amounts of grip from the alloys wrapped in

wide 245/60 rubber and the car generally sticks to its line when pushed into a corner. However, push it harder and it will understeer. Still, traction control channels the power rather efficiently, eradicating any form of irrational manoeuvres made by the driver. The turning circle is fabulous for a vehicle of this size, thanks to the generous steering locking angles, which makes parking and city driving easier. The ride is extremely smooth, with very little in the way of ground imperfections making their way into the cabin. It doesn’t feel floaty either, which is a plus, considering its competitors managed to make me feel sea-sick after travelling long distances. Kudos must go to the engineers who tuned the suspension. The Explorer also gets a quicker steering ratio this time around. This means you don’t have to turn as much to get good turning angles but there’s very little feedback translating from the steering. During my test, I did manage to lumber the Explorer into the valleys and mountains of Al Amerat. There’s a “terrain selection” dial aft of the gear-shifter that gives you everything from sanddriving to mud-hunting but there’s no low-range gearing available. Still, the limited slip-rear axle lets you take on some loose surfaces without the fear of getting bogged down. I could dissect the whole valley of Al Amerat without getting stuck. But I refused to carry Ford Explorer Limited Specifications: Engine: 3.5-litre V6 Transmission: 6-speed automatic Horsepower: 290hp Torque: 346Nm Top speed: 173 (limited) Intelligent 4WD system Terrain management system Hill descent control Heated and cooled seats Daytime running lights Panoramic sunroof 2,267kg towing capacity Digital instrument cluster SYNC3 20-cm touch screen Side curtain airbags Ford MyKey Push-button start 45cm alloy wheels Paddle shifters Adaptive cruise control

on forward as the Explorer does sit rather low, and I risked damaging the internals. In all, I had a very good time with the Ford Explorer. It’s definitely one of the formidable family haulers in the business with a flair for off-roading. However, is it the best off-roader money can buy, today? Probably not but I’ll tell you this: the Explorer is definitely one of the best and well-rounded SUVs of this age. It is everything you want your SUV to be and for the first time ever Ford is competing with the Europeans in this market. Land-Rover had better watch its back.

David Hughes recommends

BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC T

here’s often an irritating tendency of a capital city’s residents to look down on the urban delights that smaller (but not small) cities have to offer (London being the obvious example). This lofty attitude is not lost in the Czech Republic, either. But I wonder if this, the country’s less celebrated and second-largest city might end up having the last laugh. Brno offers most of the attractions of its more eminent neighbour 150 miles away but at a fraction of the cost. In any case, as Prague has become increasingly westernised over the past 20 years; the myriad tourists who flock there every year might just be missing out on some of the essential gems of Slavic culture that make this Moravian capital a city to savour. Brno is home to 400,000 residents and the city is so walkable you will almost never need a train, bus, tram or cab to enjoy most of the city’s many cultural and historical attractions and sports venues. If you do venture slightly out of the city centre, Brno’s communistera architecture offers a real feel of Cold War constraints before the 1989 “Velvet Revolution” when the then Czechoslovakia split, embraced democracy and became, respectively, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. You can sample all the sauerkraut (stewed cabbage) goulash, knedliky (dumplings), roast duck, and smoked meats as you like at prices far cheaper than in Prague. And you can’t leave without trying palacinky (thin pancakes filled with cream, jam or butter), which can be found in almost any café. By the way, the name of this delightful city is pronounced “Bir-no”.

My favourite place

The Moravian Karst and Caves is a must-do. Although it means a three-hour journey out of town, it’s well worth it. The area of Karst is basically a nature reserve that boasts several gorges and more than 1,000 caves although only four are open to the public. Obviously, it’s a splendid area for walking and cycling. The Punkva caves can be seen from the languid position of a little boat on its underground stream that will take you to the Macocha Abyss, which at 138m deep, is one of the most majestic in Europe. Taking the trip means booking in advance, but it’s not just a day out; it’s an experience for all time.

Highlights

Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic examples of architecture are all on show here. So if you happen to be inside the 13th-century Spilberk Castle and reflecting on its role in the city (as a royal home, fortress and prison) down the ages, don’t forget to appreciate that it is probably still solid as the day it was built. Its look-out tower offers commanding views over the city and surrounding area and also houses the city’s museum. Perched atop the city’s Petrov Hill, the Cathedral of St Peter & Paul is a magnificent 18th-century edifice, which boasts a venerable Baroque interior as good as anything in Europe, and twin towers (added in the 20th century). Admirers of more modern structures can make a beeline for Tugendhat Villa. It’s a house that was built in 1930 and is now a Unesco World Heritage Site; possibly because it typifies the elements of Art Deco along with an open-plan interior, employing materials such as chrome, ebony and onyx.

Lowlights

English is not as widely spoken here as it is in Prague (which is relatively little, for a capital city). Therefore, do try and pick up a few standard phrases and expressions before you go. There are plenty of language guides on YouTube or apps available to help you. Also, don’t be put off if waiters or shop assistants are a bit gruff with you. They aren’t really; it’s just that the “have a nice day” mantra has never really caught on in the former Eastern European countries despite apparent westernisation!

Souvenirs Around the Old Town area’s cobble-stoned alleyways, you won’t fail to come across a plethora of boutiques selling porcelain, Bohemia crystal, crafts and jewellery. The shops won’t be crowded and the prices aren’t high. Getting there

Emirates has a direct flight from Dubai to Prague, from where you can catch a train from Prague’s Hlavni Nadrazi to Brno, which takes about two hours and 45 minutes.

Where to stay There are plenty of four-star hotels here that offer great value for money. All the world’s top chains are here, and most are in the city centre. The best places to look for options are websites such as Trivago, Booking.com, Hotels.com, Kayak or Expedia. JUN 15 - 21 / ISSUE 475

Assetto Corsa

App of the Week

Q

uick! Can you name a few of the best car racing Info Box games you can currently buy for your console? Developer: Well, chances are you said Forza Horizon 3, Gran KUNOS SIMULAZIONI Turismo 6, Project Cars and Need for Speed. You see, Publisher: those are the obvious choices but now we have another 505 GAMES contender: the Assetto Corsa. Platform: And, you’re in for a treat. Assetto Corsa – which PC, PS4, XBOX ONE roughly translates to “race trim” – is a thoroughbred car Mode: racing simulator intended for racing enthusiasts or, as I SINGLE PLAYER, call them, armchair racers (of course, I’m kidding). MULTIPLAYER But playing the game does require a great deal of Genre: talent. Why? Assetto Corsa possesses one of the most RACING SIMULATION advanced physics engines in a game. This is as realistic as a car simulator can get. This means you will understeer with a front-wheel drive hot-hatchback and oversteer uncontrollably in an American muscle car. But, that’s not where the realism ends: play the game with a steering wheel and you can feel the undulations on the racetrack. Weather conditions can drastically hamper the traction, crashes can alter your steering angles and braking and worst (or best, depending on how you see it) of all, you could blow your tyre if you don’t enter the pits on time. The graphics are beyond belief, and the car collection is good enough to make Jay Leno’s garage look like a yard sale. There are hundreds of cars to choose from, starting with KIAs and Mazdas, all the way to hardcore racers like Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bowlers, KTMs and even Lotuses. The detailing is even better when you switch to the interior, as each and every element inside the car is functional and interactive… like in a real car. Of course, as with any game, there are negatives. Most of those come from the fact that the developers aren’t as established as those of other rival games. This means you will encounter the odd bug(s) here and there. The menu is unpolished and so is the online multiplayer option. I had to quit the game, thus relinquishing all my rewards, after finishing races online. But all of those are small niggles when you look at the overall product. The game does very well as a car racing game. It shows no intention to take on its rivals but rather keep its head afloat by remaining the true simulation game that it has been developed to be even though the world knows that the money is in arcade-style games (shame on you, Forza).

GOOGLE TRIPS Google engineers seem to have loads of time on their hands to design apps no one else thinks about. SKIN DEEP Protecting the skin from sun damage doesn’t end with sunscreen and moisturiser

E

verybody knows they should protect their skin from sun damage. They slather on sunscreen or, at the very least, a facial moisturiser with SPF protection. But how many think about repairing the damage that has already been done? Most people associate UV rays with summers at the beach, but UV rays are ubiquitous. Any exposure to natural light, whether from playing beach volleyball, walking to a parked car, sitting near an office window or staging a snowball fight can damage skin. For example, after a tan fades, people might notice dark spots, uneven skin tone, blotchiness or wrinkles. And that’s all just surface damage – UV rays penetrate deep into the skin, creating damage that won’t be visible for years. “Under the surface there is invisible damage that can and will manifest into what is seen on the upper layer of the dermis,” says Dr Adam Geyer, an instructor in clinical dermatology at Columbia University in New York City. Even if women are diligent about using sunscreen all year long, their skin will still suffer some photo-damage. Luckily, women can repair and prevent damage. Some women resort to expensive procedures, like chemical peels

042

JUN 15 - 21 / ISSUE 475

and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments, which use lasers to lessen visible skin damage. But women can also repair visible and invisible UV damage at home. Kiehl’s Since 1851 (www.kiehls.com), a company that has specialised in skin care since 1851, has introduced its Photo-Age Corrector High-Potency Spot Treatment. It targets the melanin that causes discolouration by decreasing melanin production and helping to prevent existing melanin from rising to the surface. This decreases the appearance of blotches and dark spots for brighter, more translucent skin. At the same time, antioxidants help prevent damage from free radicals. When used with its supporting cleanser, toner and moisturiser, the HighPotency Spot Treatment provides immediate luminosity, reduces dark spots and evens skin tone in as little as four weeks while also inhibiting invisible damage from rising to the surface. The clinically proven treatment is appropriate for all skin types and ethnicities. For more information, visit www.kiehls.com. – NewsUSA

FASTING FACTS

Dr Francy Pullikan, an internal medicine specialist at Burjeel Hospital Muscat, on the health benefits of fasting during Ramadan

A

s the Holy Month of Ramadan enters its final week or so, Muslims all over the world are fasting from dawn to dusk. Ramadan is undertaken for the purpose of spiritual growth, being one of the five pillars of Islam. And it comes with an array of health benefits. Quite a number of research papers have been published regarding the benefits of fasting that could positively influence our overall health. These include weight-loss, reduced levels of bad cholesterol, increased levels of good cholesterol and a reduction in blood pressure. • Fasting promotes fat breakdown and weight-loss. Due to fasting, calorie consumption is significantly reduced during Ramadan. But calorie reduction might not happen if you are bingeing on sweets. However, if you maintain your usual eating habits, you will eat less food and lose weight. This is especially true during Ramadan when your source of energy during your fast is mainly fat. Trying to stay lightly active during the day can promote even more fat breakdown. • Fasting improves your blood fat levels. A study conducted in the Annals of Nutrition Metabolism 1997 shows that fasting lowered bad “LDL” cholesterol levels by eight per cent, triglyceride by 30 per cent, and increased good “HDL” levels by 14.3 per cent – thereby protecting your

• •

heart from cardiovascular disease. This is mainly due to the change in eating and exercise habits during Ramadan. Most people tend to go for healthier food options such as dates, nuts, lentil soup, and home-cooked meals. Studies have shown that overall saturated fat consumption – usually found in butter, lard, fatty meat, and fast food, is reduced during Ramadan. Fasting leads to a reduction in stress hormones in the body, which may lead to the temporary reduction of blood pressure in people with hypertension. Fasting prompts the release of certain brain chemicals called endorphins, which reduce stress levels and give an overall sense of wellbeing.

Some helpful tips:

• Break your fast with fruit, fresh juices, and plenty of fluids. • Have a balanced meal: 50 per cent from complex carbohydrates such as

wheat/rice/potatoes/other vegetables; 40 per cent from protein food like meat/fish/legumes; and 10 per cent from good fats. • Avoid deep-fried oily foods rich in mono-unsaturated fats. • Do not try to over-compensate for the missed meal by overeating.

ROCK THE KABSA Don’t skimp on the shrimp for your Iftar ideas

I

n the second part of our Iftar recipe series from the UAE-based cookery writer Assia Othman, we explore the delicate Arabian flavours of the shrimp kabsa. A one-pot wonder, shrimp kabsa is a healthy and nutritious alternative to fried foods – and a delicious dish to feature on your Iftar table with a host of side dishes, such as crunchy salads, vegetable dishes and Arabic bread. From the cardamom pods to cinnamon sticks and whole cloves, this “comfort” recipe packs a flavour punch that is enhanced with the citrusy tang of fresh Omani limes. Best of all, it is simple to prepare and can be cooked in a slow cooker and allowed to simmer while you get on with the important things in life, such as spending quality time with your family and friends before sitting down to Iftar. For more recipe ideas, check out Assia’s blog at assiakitchen.com/ home/
