IN THIS ISSUE…

T

hey’re our most precious commodity and within them we see ourselves reflected back at us – our children. We’d do anything for them and do all to protect them from those who would do them harm. And when we hear tales of such harm befalling these most innocent of souls, our hearts mourn as one. But how close to home is too close? As Oman’s Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) releases its latest tally, the numbers are in and the reality is grim, with figures showing the rates of child abuse in 2018 across the Sultanate have doubled since 2017. Standing at 721 reported cases, Oman may show lower statistics than its neighbours do but there’s no denying how the innocence of these children has been stolen and their lives changed forever. In our cover story this issue, our investigation into the matter reveals two sides: one that praises the efforts of the ROP in bringing justice to survivors, and another that sheds light on the growing concern at hand. Even as the numbers can be attributed to more families coming forward to report these crimes committed, there’s still a public worry whether our children are in safe hands or whether the seemingly helpful bystander, parent, sibling, or relative has an ulterior motive. Turn to Page 16 to read on. Also in this issue, and on a lighter note, we’re excited to kick off Y’s 2019 Ramadan Car Guide, bringing you the best automotive offers all month long, plus more great Ramadan Giveaways to keep you going until Eid! Plus, we’re hitting the waters and heading out to the Damaniyat Islands in our Destination pages, bringing you some easy, make-at-home Qaranqasho treats to keep your little ones smiling in Yummy Oman, and pouring some Coffee with Y in an exclusive interview with Friendi Mobile CEO Salma Al Maawali. THE VOICE OF OMAN

correspondence DEBATE OF THE WEEK WE ASKED: Child abuse rates in Oman have doubled since 2017, with more children coming forward to report incidents. Yet officials say that many cases still remain. Why do you think these unreported incidents are staying under wraps and how can we tackle this sensitive issue?

ABHILASH AUGUSTINE

C

hild abuse is one of the evils of society that can completely destroy a child if they are not rescued from that environment and then given the right therapy on time – and the effects can be both physical and mental in nature. Physical forms of abuse – from harsh disciplining to more grave forms sexual in nature – can completely shatter a child’s emotional health. They can begin showing signs of distress such as regress, anxiety, fear and betrayal; all of which can last from a short to a long period. These situations must be dealt with immediately and in almost all cases, it’s always good to separate the child from the abuser. Child abuse can take various forms, too. Even something like neglect by parents, teachers or siblings can change the perception of a child, as in, they can begin to experience inadequacy, which can then go on to lower their self-esteem. Children who have been subjected to neglect can also begin responding to events in different ways – sometimes in an aggressive form even – so that they can be heard. While this can cause a further rift between the child and the people around them, it can be the start of a domino effect. The only way we can tackle it is by teaching parents and even teachers about how they must give equal attention to their children so that we can begin addressing their issues. A child is also a human being with emotions. We need to keep that in mind when acting and interacting with them. They’re also incredibly impressionable. So, what they see and learn from you is perhaps what will lay the groundwork for the person they’ll grow up to be.

MAY 23 - 29 / ISSUE 570

It’s really shocking to know about the sharp rise in child abuse cases in Oman. According to recent statistical data which I came across, the figures only included those abuses that were revealed by the 24/7 child protection hotline (1100) in Oman. However, the undocumented cases could be much higher. Even though children have reported cases related to physical and sexual violence, sexual trade, and psychological abuse, officials claim that there are still many unidentified cases under wraps. And I feel, it’s mainly because of the shame, guilt, and embarrassment that they undergo along with the fear of not being believed, the fear of punishment, and the fear of breaking the family’s reputation. It’s high time to put an end to this menace by all possible measures. Firstly, let’s be nurturing parents; secondly, intensify awareness programs on health education, emotional development, housing, and safe living conditions; thirdly, strengthen child abuse punishments under the penal code and, finally, enforcing the existing child law at the earliest as child protection is a priority for all in Oman.

ELIZABETH JOSEPH

Child abuse is considered to be either physical or emotional harm to a child that can be intentional or unintentional. Neglecting the needs of a child is also identified as a form of child abuse. The rates of child abuse have significantly increased in Oman and the fact that few incidents remain hidden is upsetting, although most of them are reported to the law-enforcing bodies. There are many reasons why incidents remain unreported – one of the main ones being the emotional trauma to the child. Child abuse not only harms them physically, but also mentally. As a result, the child is afraid to let out his/ her worries and sufferings; and if I child feels

For 2 people at

threatened about speaking up for fear of being harmed again, the issue is compounded. In unstable families where alcoholism, smoking, or drugs are prevalent, children get accustomed to the daily abuse and threats by their parents or caregivers, thereby developing a sense of fear to mingle with people and try to absorb everything without any reaction. Child abuse is a legal issue and such cases must have stringent laws and regulations to punish parents and caregivers involved in such acts. Physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect of children must be put to halt as these are not comprehended by children due to their young age. Neighbours or close relatives can play a vital role in reporting such incidents immediately to the higher authorities. Police and other higher officials must conduct frequent checks among communities. Teachers also play a pivotal role in noticing any changes in their students – for instance, changes in their behaviour, attitudes, loneliness, skipping classes, frequently falling ill, or physically evident bruises etc. – all of which must be immediately reported to the management to take necessary care and action. It’s high time we as a society fully comprehends the causes and effects of child abuse in order to stop it and allow our children to grow and spread happiness, as they’re th future of our world.

New Debate: With a population of just 4.6 million in Oman is the advent of new retail spaces and residential investments feeding the Sultanate’s demand or is it turning out to be a case of over-supply? Are our spending habits enough to sustain so many developments? Share your view with us and you could be in with a chance of winning dinner for two.

Edward, meet Bruce? The newest instalment of the ‘Batman’ film franchise will hit theatres on June 25, 2021, with none other than ‘Twilight’s Robert Pattinson possibly donning the Bat-Suit as the Caped Crusader Bruce Wayne. The news of Pattinson’s casting – he played tween heartthrob vampire Edward in the ‘Twilight’ saga – has been met with mixed emotions from fans of the DC Comics series. Facing off against Batman in this latest film will be villains the Penguin and Cat Woman, with at least half a dozen more potential villains who could join in the mix. It’s also rumoured that Josh Gad, who was the voice of Olaf in ‘Frozen’ may star as the Penguin. We have a feeling this will be a very different film indeed! Introducing baby West After announcing the birth of their fourth child – a baby boy – via surrogate, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have finally revealed the child’s name on social media, eight days after his birth. Naming him Psalm which means ‘song’, Kim took to Twitter a few days ago, posting a picture of the little one in his crib with the caption: “Psalm West, beautiful Mother’s Day. With the arrival of our fourth child we’re blessed beyond measure. We have everything we need.” Kim and Kanye have three other children – daughters North and Chicago, and son Saint. id! With eight films already in the series, with first coming out in 2004, Rock has revealed that he’s written new treatments for further instalments of the series, which he will executive produce. set to be released on October 23, 2020 – and we, for one, can’t wait! Wedding bells for ScarJo! Scarlet Johansson and ‘Saturday Night Live’ actor and comedian Colin Jost have been an item for the last two years, making their public début as a couple in November 2017, and attending the recent ‘Avengers: Endgame’ red carpet premiere together. Now, it seems that things are moving along even quicker as the couple just announced their engagement! While no wedding date has been set yet, we’re super happy for the star-studded pair! Eager Beliebers

A canyon in Iceland has been shut down with environmental officials allegedly claiming that Justin Bieber is the reason behind its closure. After releasing a video clip in 2015 called ‘I’ll Show You’, which was filmed in the Icelandic canyon, the country’s environmental protection resources have had to shield it from hordes of Bieber’s fans who have followed in his footsteps to visit the site – causing rampant environmental damage in their wake. The canyon was closed for two weeks in March, but now the closure has been extended through June. Officials have stated that Bieber fans would often trespass on the canyon in spite of numerous signs, fences, and park rangers to deter them. In 2018 alone, 2.3 million tourists visited the canyon as compared with 600,000 eight years ago. Star power at its most destructive? RIP Grumpy Cat The internet’s favourite feline – the adorably dour Grumpy Cat has gone to the great scratching post in the sky, passing away at the age of seven. The unimpressed cat, who spawned so many memes due to his unique frowning facial expression, died after complications from a recent urinary tract infection. Grumpy Cat’s real name is Tardar Sauce. Her family said in a statement after her death: “Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world – even when times were tough. Her spirit will continue to live through her fans everywhere.”

New music from Halsey After chart-topping collaborations with Blink 182’s Travis Barker and Yungblud, and then BTS on their track ‘With Luv’, Halsey’s first solo single of 2019, ‘Nightmare’ has just dropped. The music video is a who’s-who of celeb guests stars from Cara Delevingne and Suki Waterhouse. Halsey’s last album, ‘Hopeless Fountain Kingdom’, was released in 2017. DJ Khaled’s back on the charts Having just released his 11th album, ‘Father of Asahd’, DJ Khaled has now dropped his new single ‘Jealous’ – a collaboration with Chris Brown, Lil’ Wayne, and Big Sean. This latest track comes hot on the heels of his previous single ‘Higher’ with John Legend and the late rapper Nipsey Hussle. Other singles off his latest album include ‘Top Off’ feature none other than Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Ronson on the decks DJ Mark Ronson is breaking our hearts yet again with his latest single ‘Don’t Leave Me Lonely’, featuring YEBBA. The track is off his upcoming album ‘Late Night Feelings’ and it’s just one of a whole bunch of amazing collaborations. We’ve already heard singles featuring Lykke Li, Miley Cyrus and there are songs with Alicia Keys and Camila Cabello yet to come. We know Grammy Award-winner YEBBA from her recent collab with Chance the Rapper, and when Mark Ronson told the press that his new album was a ‘collection of sad bangers’, he wasn’t kidding. Though this latest single is smooth with an amazing dance-y feel. Aladdin Cast: Mena Massoud, Will Smith, Naomi Scott It’s one of the Middle East’s most perennially popular tales but for those who don’t know, Aladdin (in this, Massoud) is a streetwise but kind-hearted urchin who finds himself in a battle with a power-hungry villain for a magical lamp with the power to change both their lives. This is Disney’s latest movie version of one of its best loved animated films, and this time it’s Will Smith taking the role of the genie. Yes, it’s a whole new world but one in which we should all get caught up in for a couple of hours. The ever-cautious Disney has restricted screenings for this to a select few only allowing those chosen to post brief non-spoiler opinions online. But these are on the glowing side, and the

With India’s General Election only last week, you could hardly have had better time for the release of the BJP scion. Shri Narendra Modi is certainly one of India’s most charismatic leaders, and until recently, has been one of its most popular. In this we see the journey of Modi from Gujarat to the highest office in the land. Modi (Oberoi) starts his working life as a little boy helping his father to sell tea before becoming a key figure for the RSS, a Hindu nationalist volunteer organisation. A profile of such a major political figure is always a tough sell on film. Does this do Modi justice? Well, it depends on your view of the man. But at least he’s interesting enough to profile. Will Theresa May be getting a biopic? I doubt it, somehow.

Goodland

Cast: Thomas Kretschmann, Nadine Velazquez, Bex Taylor-Klaus

Cast: Matt Weiss, Cinnamon Schultz, Sara Carolynn Kennedy

When the body of a drifter is found murdered in Goodland, a town typically ‘smalltown, US’, it is its latest inhabitant, photographer Ergo Raines (Weiss) who finds himself in the frame. However, Sheriff Gaines (Schultz) means to do her job and not bow to the prejudices of the populace. As she gets on the case, she realises that there’s quite a lot that doesn’t quite add up. This community knows more than it’s letting on, and its dour denizens are not making it easy for her. As a suspense thriller, this movie starts out well but can’t seem to escape these tired old clichés of small-town America: i.e. violent young men, disaffected youth, depressed women, and loads of dilapidated, dusty buildings etc, etc. After a while it all becomes a bit of a plod.

When scientist Dr. Andre Mason (Kretschmann) finds a drug he believes will expand the human mind, and therefore humankind, he is one happy man. Unfortunately, the consequences of his grand experiment end up unleashing a supernatural force that threatens him and his long-suffering team. Ah yes, the horror-chiller in which an other-worldly force gets the chance to have some fun with some unwitting innocents. Yep, we’ve seen it all before. And this one throws in the cliché of the mad scientist for good measure. There’s plenty of gore, scary moments, and a surprise or two; just nothing that’s really electrifying. You might find yourself concentrating on your packet of crisps. Eating a packet is a bit like watching this movie: pleasant enough but not exactly an exciting experience.

have been known to funnel the child trafficking racket through their shared border in the Middle East as per the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)’s revelations. But child abuse itself is a global phenomenon that’s rising in numbers annually. In 2017 alone, the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated that up to 1 billion minors between the ages of 2 and 17 had endured some form of violence – either physical, emotional or sexual in nature. Statistics only show one part of the story, however, according to Dr. Aisha al Barwani, a clinical psychologist, life-coach and social worker based out of Oman. She says: “The key to tackling child abuse lies in first understanding the underlying problem around it: lack of education on the topic. “Being a parent or a caretaker is one of the most satisfying yet demanding jobs, and one needs to realise that your actions and teachings will lay the foundation for the child that is to become a well-rounded human being.” Aisha makes a strong case. Our research leads us to Child Help – an international organisation that specialises in offering support to

f a child’s tears could be put into words, they would script a whole story. While weeping is a means to mend one’s pain – be it mental or physical – each child has to learn to handle adversity; and it’s considered an inevitable part of life. As the adage goes, “Crying heals the hurt”. But not all scars can be healed with tears or for that matter, time. It’s something we learn as we sit down with Rashid*, a 23-year-old Omani student, who has a story of pain. It’s a story that stems from his love-hate relationship with what society pegs as his role models –his parents. Ripped off from his childhood by narcotic parents who would physically abuse him, Rashid tells of how he would be subjected to mistreatment – often with the belt by his father – which gave him several bruises, several of which haven’t faded to date. But speaking to him, we learn that it isn’t just his bruises that haven’t gone away; his mental health is just as fragile – much like that of several other child abuse victims that currently reside in the Sultanate. He struggles to gather his words in our interview but eventually relays to us the extent of what he underwent as a child. Rashid says: “I try not to remember much from my childhood. My parents were both addicts, and we used to live in a very small home in Azaiba. “Since we were distant from our family homes, I had only my parents to lean on. But, they never showed me much love or respect. “They would often hit me and pinch me to the point that I would squirm in pain or my flesh would be exposed. I was so scared that I would go and hide behind the door or under the bed when I was small. “But, once I began growing up, those options went away. I remember crying. I remember crying a lot.” Rashid was eventually rescued by his expat neighbours at the age of nine in 2005 and he has been living with his uncle in Barka ever since.

The parents were since taken to a drug rehabilitation centre. “I’m not in touch with them and I don’t want to be in touch with them either,” he says. “This Ramadan, I pray to Allah that they get a long life and understand what mistakes they made. I just don’t want to be a part of their lives anymore. “I try to make myself believe that everything was a dream. My uncle and aunt taught me the real meaning of love,” he adds, as he tears up in the arms of his uncle. Our interview with Rashid opens our eyes to the sorrowful stories of the scores of children who have lost their youth to experiences that border on child abuse. The numbers don’t lie: more than 700 were identified as victims of child abuse last year alone – and it’s one that has doubled over the course of a single year. In fact, the most recent statistics by the Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) reveal that a staggering 721 cases of child abuse were registered across Oman in 2018, as opposed to the 330 that were registered the year before. This rise of more than 100 per cent from the previous year is a scourge on the nation’s reputation, but it remains lower in comparison with its neighbours such as Saudi Arabia and Yemen – both countries that fail to reveal annual statistics and

child abuse victims and survivors. It describes the act as one that arises from when a parent or caregiver, whether through action or failing to act, causes injury, death, emotional harm or risk of serious harm to a child. This can take many forms, beginning from the more obvious ones such as physical and sexual abuse and all the way to exploitation, emotional abuse and neglect. “Today, most people simply recognise child abuse as extreme cases of physical or sexual abuse, not knowing fully well that what they’re doing probably classifies as a criminal offence in the eyes of the Omani law. “As per the Omani law, a child is an individual who falls

under the age of 18 as per the Gregorian calendar. “A lot of parents that come to me for counselling are shocked to find out that neglect falls as a punishable offence. The obvious meaning of the word aside, neglect is when a parent or caretaker fails to give love, affection, care or even medical and educational supervision to their children thereby putting their mental or physical health at risk. “Sadly, it’s something the people only realise when they hit the absolute low point, which could result in harm

to the child.” Her point is proven correct as just moments after our interview, we stumble upon the news of the passing of two children – Nasser and Hamad – aged five and three who suffocated to death after they were locked inside their family car. This, she points out later, falls under the category of neglect. It’s a coincidence but one that has shocked the residents of the Sultanate, and one that raises awareness on how children must be attended to in the summer, especially around vehicles. Staggeringly, neglect comprises of the single most number of victims and survivors in Oman, with over 356 currently listed among them. This is followed by physical abuse at 183, psychological abuse at 109 and sexual abuse at 71. Child sexual abuse is classified as an act ranging from groping to rape that is committed against anyone under the age of 18. As per the UNICEF, more than 120 million children around the world are either victims or survivors of the ordeal. In a one-on-one interview with Y, one official from the Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) sheds light on the current issues faced by the nation with respect to child abuse. He tells us: “There’s no way we can compare our numbers with what other nations are showing, because for one, every single child abuse victim matters to us. “We could have two cases every year and we’d still consider our job to be far from over. But as we clocked 721 cases last year, we’re having mixed emotions

on how we must deal with this situation. “The first point is that we now know what we’re dealing with here – the numbers and the types of abuse are slowly being identified. Secondly, we’re glad to now know that our hotlines are working as we had intended. “One of the greatest worries we ever had was if people would reach out to our hotline – which is a toll-free number ‘1-1-0-0’ we set up in 2017 and is operational 24/7 – that you can call to report yourself as a victim or even if an adult does it on your behalf. The official then goes on to reveal how the numbers of abuse victims now receiving treatment across centres across the nation are on the rise, and are at the highest it has ever been. A reason, he says, for this trend is because more people are now making use of the hotline. “We cannot afford to waste any time when it comes to the welfare of the people – and children have become one of our top priorities. Some of the calls that we receive in the hotline number require immediate attention and treatment. “If it’s something like molestation or sexual abuse, we will request immediate intervention by the child protection officials and in most cases, the Royal Oman Police (ROP). Not only is such a situation safer for the child, it’ll also give us a chance for us to put a stop on the trauma that the offender may be causing from acts they’re committing outside their homes on other victims we don’t know as well. “Last year, I was personally involved in the rescue of one

THEY BROKE DOWN THE DOOR AFTER WHAT SEEMED LIKE FOREVER TO FIND ME HIDING UNDER THE BED. I WAS SO SCARED WHEN I HEARD SOMEONE ELSE BREAK INTO THE HOUSE. I DIDN’T KNOW IT WAS THE POLICE

young girl – I think she was in her early teens – who was being sexually abused and assaulted by a family member. She was groomed to be a victim to the perpetrator so she knew very little about what was going on. “But, it was her strength and her gut instinct that what was going on was not normal that then gave her the strength to confess everything to her maid. They called the hotline together and that’s how she was rescued from that environment. “We cannot reveal more about the girl to anyone,” he tells us. A quick research, however, reveals that in most cases, when an abuse victim has been identified, they’re shifted to Dar al Wefaq (a temporary care centre) in the Family Protection Department. This house is dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of abused children. In an earlier interview with local media, Shams bint Said Hamoud al Hajri, the director of the Family Protection Department in the MoSD, said: “We ensure full confidentiality regarding the complaint and the caller. “It’s a free line. Depending upon the complaint, it is

forwarded to the relevant authorities.” In an earlier interview with Y, Sayyida Basma al Said, the founder of the Whispers of Serenity clinic in Oman revealed: “No matter how old or strong the child is, if they have faced mistreatment, they need to receive treatment. “A reason for this is a child who is in their development stage grows up with these negative incidents embedded in their brain. And this can lead to a lot of immediate or long-term repercussions. “Violence of any form that a child undergoes in a safe space – like in their homes, schools or even in the parks – can cause serious impairments to brain development. This can then be associated with struggles with mental health that in later stages can trigger episodes leading up to re-victimisation and even suicide. “So, it’s vital that the necessary treatment is given to children – and in the most professional manner possible,” she adds. Oman’s fight against child abuse has been a long one – albeit, it’s a fight that the government is tackling with efficiency.

For instance, child protection officers have been appointed in accordance with the Ministerial Decision No 43/2016, who must visit families and childcare institutions regularly to root out offenders. The Omani law is tightknit when it comes to punishing offenders, but as per our source at the ROP, the government takes a zero-tolerance approach towards sexual offenders. In an electronic message, the official writes to us: “An offender committing an act of sexual abuse against a child will be prosecuted and be handed over a prison term of not less than five years and no more than 15 years, and a fine of no less than RO5,000 and no more than RO10,000. “However, the law also specifies how acts of violence such as the kidnapping or sale of a child, transportation of a child’s organs, coercion of a child into performing any kind of sexual activity, sexual solicitation of a child for or for any form of activity including pornographic performances or materials, publishing, circulating, or even possession of such material, can result in a similar sentence”. Perhaps it’s this approach towards child abuse that keeps survivors such as Rashid hoping

for a better future. The young Omani, who only started his education at the age of 10, dreams of becoming a police officer. “One day I will join the ROP and prove myself there. I have a lot of respect for them. “The reason for this fascination to join the force comes from when my neighbours called the ROP after they heard loud noises of screaming from our house on that dreadful night. “They broke down the door after what seemed like forever to find me hiding under the bed. I was so scared when I heard someone else break into the house. I didn’t know it was the police. “But my parents were taken in soon after – it’s the last I saw them. But, just moments later, after they heard my wails, one officer offered me a hand to pull myself out from under the bed. It was the first time I held a hand so tightly and it didn’t hit me back. “That gave me hope. And it still does.” *Name changed to protect identity

enowned among Oman’s expat community as the provider of one of the most affordable cellular services in the country, FRiENDi mobile has long been touted as a windfall in the telecom sector. With class-leading perks up their sleeve, such as discounted call rates to selected Asian countries and internet services bordering in on the affordable in the cellular industry, it’s little wonder then that the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) continues its stronghold over the segment in the nation – as it has over the last 10 years. It’s something Salma Nasser al Maawali, the CEO of the company – who is also the first woman in Oman to hold this position in the telecom industry – takes much pride in disclosing to us in an interview. A far-sighted team player and leader, Salma leaves all the success and praise to her colleagues while also maintaining transparency over the challenges the company faces. She says: “10 years of success – that’s the collective hard work of all the team members of FRiENDi mobile. The journey has been a long and a fruitful one, but it’s been one filled with trials too.” It’s trials that she’s successfully overcome with her team since joining the company five years ago. She initially joined the team as the Finance Director for the brand, where she managed financial planning, engaged in driving the company’s strategy, and contributed towards strengthening their positioning. Armed with a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a master’s degree in accounting, Salma has gained the reputation of taking cautious steps, but with the company’s greater future in her sights. For instance, FRiENDi mobile has shifted from its long-term network partner, OmanTel, to Ooredoo and is in the final stages of completing the transposition. Talking about the shift, she says: “For us

S S E C as a re-seller, it’s very important to have the best strategic partner and partner who focuses on wholesale business – which is what we found in Ooredoo. “The terms of the commercial agreement we could negotiate were another great factor for this shift. Since this is a long-term contract that we have signed with Ooredoo, we’ll be in partnership for five to seven years.” All of this, she says, is in a bid to tackle the challenges that lay ahead together with one of the greatest players in the market – a tie-up similar to what you’d see in the automotive industry (eg: BMW and Toyota, or Nissan and Mitsubishi). While the former allows manufacturers to share existing technology, FRiENDi mobile’s tieup with Ooredoo will bear similar outcomes, as customers can now experience state-of-the-art internet and cellular networks. As per Salma, it also allows them to offer competitive packages while enabling them to generate profits for the company. “The challenges are huge,” she tells us, before adding, “But, it’s like what any other MVNO faces around the world. “The telecom industry is a competitive market – and that’s where the need comes for us to find a strong partner. So, how we compete in the market and the strategies we adopt all relay to the future of the company. “Most MVNOs also have to find a niche crowd to sustain themselves in the market. For us it’s the expat segment – and that’s why we focus heavily on the audience and scripting the right offers and packages for the people to benefit out of.

Having studied how mobile data has become the main means of communication, FRiENDi now comes up with unlimited validity data options, along with international packages – a standout feature in this segment. Salma then goes on to explain how it’s not just the lucrative packages that determine a happy customer, but rather how it must be achieved with a complete portfolio of value-added services. Today, FRiENDi mobile

boasts of one of the highest customer service and efficiency rankings in the region, and it’s hard to imagine how a small team could achieve such a great feat. Yet, all odds aside, this Omani company has achieved the impossible. “Our service satisfaction rate is between 93 to 95 per cent, which speaks for itself,” she proudly claims. “But, in terms of number of staff we’re small – but we’re highly efficient. If you compare calls-per-agent against any MVNO, we’re the leaders. “And that’s how we must operate as a re-seller. We must be very efficient – and only then can we can be profitable.” Only time will tell what the future has in store for the company, and as one more service provider is slated to enter the market, Salma and her team is already working towards taking steps to further ascertain their position. “The entrance [of new service providers] will definitely change the dynamics. But there is space for competition. “For us, we don’t necessarily think of MVNOs to be in direct competition with new service providers, but we must act quickly and work harder. In the end, we need to capitalise on our greatest strength: our experience in the market. “It’s probably because of all these calculated steps that we find the response from the customers to been great,” she tells us. “This shift itself imbibes a lot of positive vibes and it livens up the brand more so than ever before. “We’ve been studying the market for a long time. This was not a decision we took overnight. You can see how the telecom department in the country is evolving – it’s very rapid and competitive. “Our next goal would be to grow the customer base. And now that we’re shifting, being able to offer the same level of customer satisfaction through our outstanding services would be the key. Once we do that, it’ll help us become the unprecedented market leaders in the MVNO segment.” ■

Lights fantastic Ornate and intricate, or simple yet tasteful, lanterns have been lighting up homes during the Holy Month for centuries. Swati Basu Das reports

amps have earned themselves a notable mention in the Holy Quran. The glowing carved clay lamps and partially-coloured glass lanterns lighting up every home are emblems of enlightenment and faith during the holy

month. If you think Ramadan is just about intermittent fasting, then step out and look around. You will see lanterns everywhere during these 30 days of selfrestraint. A visit to the mall or a stroll through the souk at night or an iftar get-together at your friends’ place all offer an impression of their omnipresence. Beyond fasting, it is truly a festive season that is bright and welcoming. This time of the year is meant to create an atmosphere that’s not only spiritually beautiful but exquisitely radiant as well. And all that makes this holy month bright are the lamps or the lanterns, (‘fanous’ in Arabic). A typical

tradition representing the month of Ramadan and a symbol of hope, the sparkling lights cast a subtle glow. A decorative piece enhancing Ramadan tents, interiors or the courtyards of premises, the lanterns have their origin in ancient Egypt. As diverse and intriguing as their designs, Ramadan lanterns celebrate rich literary collections attesting to their luminous presence since time immemorial. A familiar fable tells of the dark streets of Cairo being lit up by children singing and carrying lanterns to light up the road for the Caliph while he strolled around the city. Another gripping tale tells the story of the reunion of a lost prince and his father. The little prince who ran away from home was captured and imprisoned by an ogre. He was finally released when the Caliph (his father) came in search of him. They returned to their palace on the first day of Ramadan and fasted together. Commemorating the holy month and rejoicing at the return of his son, the Caliph offered gold lanterns to his subjects and ordered to hang them at the entrance of each premise, streets and mosques. From the streets of Egypt to every home here and across the globe, these fables still impress every listener. More cultural and mythical than religious, these tinted glass lanterns finds their way home during Ramadan. While some are correctly placed on the iftar table or at the entrance of a house, others are hung magnificently in gardens and balconies. Busy buying a few rainbow-coloured fanous, Samsa Saif Al Jabri, a Ramadan shopper, gives me an insight: “This fasting month has more to it. It’s a festive season well celebrated with bright and colourful lights around us. The light grants us a ray of hope and harmony the year shall bring to us. Lighting bright fanous during Ramadan bring in joy and memories to last forever. They also make great gifts during the holy month.” Gaining popularity in Oman in the recent past, lanterns have evolved from clay lamps, which in the past were lit by burning the oilfed cotton wick; to electric multicoloured glass and carved clay-urn lanterns. These now come in various shapes, colours and materials. Be they paper lanterns (an easy DIY job), clay lamps or tinted glass lanterns, they all display innovative patterns. While some are swathed in arabesque designs and Islamic calligraphy, others bear elaborate geometrical shapes and brilliant coloured glass. As the perfect time to admire these fancy, innovative shapes and designs brightening every corner, Ramadan is a time when business booms for lanterns. Uttam Kumar Shah, a shopkeeper at Muttrah Souq, says: “Customers are fascinated with modern designs and colour effects. In recent years, the demand has increased and the lantern business has escalated.” With its growing demand and evolving designs, the clay-urn lamps are an equally attractive purchase. Designed by local potters, clay lamps tend to come in three sizes – small, medium and large – all intricately carved. There is no shortage of colours and designs available in local shops and souks. These equally decorative clay-urn lamps undoubtedly radiate a rustic appeal. Spreading an everlasting message of hope and harmony, Ramadan lanterns help to glorify the holy month. ■

Where to buy There’s a good range of glass and clay lanterns available at Nizwa and Muttrah Souq, which can be very good value. The cost of lamps ranges from RO8 to RO60 per piece depending on the size and the design.

THE DAMANIYAT ISLANDS Aftab H. Kola finds an unspoiled haven with a stunning eco-system that’s home to all manner of wildlife 034

Barka in Al Batinah region in the east, the Damaniyat Islands Reserve is a wonderful getaway for frenzied souls. This picturesque chain of islands along the coast of Wilayat Seeb and Wilayat Barka is rich in marine and terrestrial wildlife. Declared as a Natural Reserve by Royal Decree in April 1996, the Damaniyat Islands are accessible only by boat. The most important ones are Al Jabel Al Kabir, Awald Jon, Lumia, Al Hayout, Al Jabal Al Saghir, Al Kharabah and Al Momalah. This reserve is also considered a natural heritage museum surrounded by sea water and has great potential for environmental tourism, taking into account the policies and regulation to be observed when visiting such places. The Islands are also rich in coral

HOW TO GET THERE

TRAVEL GUIDE

P

lumbing the turquoise-blue waters, silence prevails; a serenity unlike anything on shore, and yet there is a sense of mystique. You are amidst the colourful corals, an integral part of the ecosystem. With two major seas abutting Oman – the Arabian Sea and the Sea of Oman – it has a collection of over 530 square kilometres of amazing coral reefs that support more than 100 coral and 580 fish species. Thousands of marine birds make it as their home in summer unfolding a stunning canvas at the Damaniyat Islands. Seventy kilometres west of the shores of Muscat, an archipelago of nine tiny islands make up the Damaniyat Islands. Bound by Muscat Governorate in the north, and the Wilayat of

reefs, of rich colours, shapes and textures, which extend for about 15 kilometres along the rocky coastline. It is really a delight for natural life explorers who wish to discover the wondrous attraction of this place. These colourful coral reefs form wonderful formations that attract a large number of tourists fond of scuba diving, and those who like to enjoy the natural beauty. The immense variety of migratory birds is one of the common features of the Islands, too. The common tern prefers to nest on the vegetated islands while other species of terns opt for the open land. Red-billed tropical birds nest on the north face of the cliff while the magnificent ospreys nest in winter months on top of the more prominent cliff. The Reserve is considered a safe haven for green and hawksbill turtles that come to nest on the beach because the area is free of predators like dogs and foxes. Marine mammals like bottlenose, common and spinner dolphins and the humpback whales all make their home here. These islands are composed of prominent limestone rocks and ancient coral reefs. To the north, they slope steeply under the sea to depths of more than 25 metres. To the south, they are flanked by shallow sandy sea with extensive

coral reefs. The separation of these Islands from the coast contributes to the preservation of their unspoilt nature. There are 15 types of wild plants, most of which grow in Kharaba and Big Mountain, creating a perfect habitat for the nesting birds. Besides this, there are various types of marine weeds and algae — sources of food for turtles and mammals. Dolphins and whale sharks, and black-headed whales swarm the waters surrounding the island along with fish such as greasy grouper (locally known as hammour), emperor (sheri), mackerel (kanad), tuna and ornamental fishes. Some types of reptiles and sea snakes are also found here. Camping is only allowed in the (Al Jabal Al Kabeer) Big Mountain and Al Joune islands. To maintain the environmental balance in the islands, tourists are advised not to take dogs or other plant seeds that might grow in the area. All protective procedures should be taken to preserve the beauty of this place. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs of Oman is constantly carrying out the Marine Life Preservation project under Reef Check Oman (a communitybased NGO partially funded by the government) to restore coral damage. Regulations require a written permit from the ministry for visiting the island. A maximum of 12 people or five tents are allowed. Regulations also specify the fees for obtaining permits for importing/ exporting endangered animals. Camping is not permitted between May and October because that is the time the green turtles return to the island.

The islands are located around 17km offshore in the waters between Barka and Seeb and can take between 30 minutes to one hour by boat to get there. Chartering a boat or booking a tour is essential. The islands are clustered into three groups, while the Damaniyat Islands Nature Reserve is comprised of nine smaller rocky islets.

G a m i n g POSTCARDS FROM

Emma Rafferty recommends

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, USA M

ost people think of the United States as the most westernised, modern nation on earth. So finding yourself in a mule-drawn carriage being taken at an oh-sogenteel pace around the quaint, cobbled streets of this city rather gives you the best of both worlds. As my Granny once regaled me with tales of her youth, of being a ‘flapper’ and dancing the Charleston, I hadn’t realised, then, that the dance had emanated from an actual place. And what a city it is. It has been voted America’s loveliest by readers of ‘Travel + Leisure’ magazine. If you’ve ever harboured any fantasies of showcasing your inner Scarlett O’Hara, then this is the place to do it. The historical white Palladian-style mansions, elegant gardens, and array of pastel-hued, quaint boutiques can be easily explored on foot. This Southern city is halfway down South Carolina’s coastline, and sits on a natural harbour where the Cooper, Ashley, and Wando rivers converge as they flow into the Atlantic Ocean. This is one of the reasons why the city became synonymous with the infamous slave trade of the 18 th and 19 th centuries. In a country of freeways, this is one of America’s most accessible cities, and most of the sights are within walking distance. The South of Broad area is where you will find the most elegant mansions. Some of these are now museums that have been restored and curated to recall their yesteryear grandeur. All that strolling around will need to be fuelled by some serious soul food. That means evergreen favourites such as cornbread, sweet potato pie, black-eyed peas, and fried fish. And, of course, the barbecue down here is really something.

HANDM

ADE S WE BASKE ET GRASS TS

OD B IN , M C L E SLAVE CA N IO T PLANTA

My favourite place The McLeod Plantation. This impressive, white mansion looks like many of the grand residences you

can see here. But here, it’s the lives of its rather less fortunate residents that are commemorated – the slaves who worked here. It’s illuminating, educational, and shocking. The plantation is four miles out of town.

Highlights This is the south, and there really is a more laid-back feel to dining and socialising here, where as when New Yorkers go to dinner, chances are they’ll be fed and watered within an hour. Here, you can head to Bertha’s Kitchen, which is a soul food legend. Its okra stew is its speciality, along with its yams and fried chicken. From Bertha’s you could drive across the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge to Sullivan’s Island, to stroll off all that magnificent food on a long, lovely beach. Nearby is Fort Moultrie, where author Edgar Allen Poe was once stationed, and where there is a tribute to the Africans who were brought here against their will from their homeland, and whose stories are chronicled in the International African American Museum next door. Lowlights None Souvenirs American cities and towns are dominated by malls, and roadside blocks of retail outlets called ‘strip malls’. So it’s a pleasure to see a mix of upmarket shops and family-run businesses in King Street. Here, a stretch of pastel-coloured buildings make shopping a pleasure, not a chore. You can buy artefacts, quirky jewellery, and ornaments. Nearby, you’ll find Charleston City Market, where you can buy sweetgrass baskets.

Getting there Oman Air and KLM operate flights from Muscat to Charleston, with two stops along the way. Alternatively, fly to London’s Heathrow Airport from which British Airways operates a twice-weekly, direct flight to Charleston. Where to stay All the world’s most well-known hotel chains have a presence here, which you’ll find online on sites such as Booking.com, Trivago, Expedia, and Kayak. But why not go for that true Charleston experience and stay at the John Rutledge House Inn? It’s an 18th century mansion that’s been turned into an impressive B&B, and where you’ll see southern hospitality in spades.

PlayStation, circa 2002 – it’s the greatest praise a Dirt game can ever receive. That said, the graphical interface is as perky as ever – possibly even sitting as one of the best we’ve tested in recent times, and the EGO physics engine works wonders around the car’s framework to provide users with a near glitch-free racing experience. Mastering the gameplay can be an arduous task for anyone new to the series. Controls are easy to remember but the car physics can be hard to tame – as would be the case if you were to hop into a multimillion-dollar rally car. This makes for a challenging environment, especially as you take to the tracks at night, where you’re forced to rely solely on your headlamps to light up the few metres of road ahead of you and trusting deeply in your co-driver’s instructions. Intuition and skill are key to progressing through the story mode, as even the easier settings can pose a hard time for beginners. We’d even recommend a steering wheel set to get to grips with the physics engine. The message is clear with Dirt Rally 2.0: you either learn on the job to become the best rally driver in the game or perish in a fireball of metal as you spearhead into a tree in a racecourse designed to appease rally enthusiasts who have been at it for decades. And for that very reason, it takes the cake at a solid 9/10. JULY MAY 03 23 - 09 29 / ISSUE 570 327

Think the Oscars are showbusiness’s pinnacle fashion parade? Yes? Then think again, dearies. Eyes this way over to the 2019 Met Gala – the fash-pack peak, where the weird and wonderful gather in all their head-turning finery. We love, love, love this look on Serena. Period. Full stop. Drawing inspiration from a tennis ball tossed in a spray of autumn leaves, this ruffled-caped couture gown from Versace is a dream on her. And while autumn is still a long way off, it’s never too early to draw inspiration from her neon ensemble. Skip the straighteners When it’s already 45 Celsius and rising outside – do you really need to subject your hair to more punishment by using hot tools such as curling irons, blow-dryers, or flat-irons? Instead, these tools can compound the damage done already by the sun and humidity, drying your hair out to the point where it can become frizzy and break. So, nix the hot rods and opt to go au naturel. After all, it’s summer – and beachy-keen waves are where it’s at.

Let your tresses shine without the worry of pesky sun damage by following our ultimate summer haircare tips!

S

plit ends, chlorine-faded colour and dry, brittle locks are the frustrating flip-side of all those days spent poolside. Rather than trying to reverse the damage done, a little forward planning goes a long way. With another Muscat summer on the horizon, now’s the time you should be tending your tresses. And if there’s one word you’ll want to keep well-stocked in your hot-weather vocabulary, it’s ‘moisture’ because when the mercury skyrockets, your hair (and body!) needs it! Here’s our Summer Haircare Starter Pack to get you well on your way towards lush, healthy strands from now until September! Pre-pool prep Whether you’re spreading your towel at the beach or lounging poolside, chlorine and saltwater can wreak havoc on your locks. Prep for battle by rinsing your hair under cold water before you immerse yourself. There’s a limit to how much water your hair can absorb so if you plunge your strands in fresh water first, it limits the amount of damaging salt or chlorine that can penetrate your hair shafts. The UV factor Just like our skin is susceptible to sun damage from harmful UVA and UVB rays, our hair is too – with sun, sea, and sand all working overtime to strip our strands of their moisture, colour, and vitality. That’s why protecting your locks with an after-sun cream to minimize UV damage is essential for keeping your head of hair lustrous and healthy. We love: Sachajuan Hair In The Sun (RO9.9). This magic formula is like a virtual swim-cap for your head, leaving our hair soft and supple even after a full day on the water.

042

MAY 23 - 29 / ISSUE 570

Moisturise on repeat We can’t stress this enough. When summer hair becomes precariously parched – quench its thirst! A deep-conditioning moisturising mask or serum will be your beach-bag’s best friend all season long as the road to ultimate summer hair repair begins with daily moisture and nourishment. We love: The Original Olaplex Hair Protector No. 3. (RO10.7). This concentrated treatment helps strengthen and repair damaged hair from within; helping to reduce breakage and restore shine. Be sure to work it through your split ends for a complete turnaround. ■

HEALTH AND THE

HOLY MONTH

I

Ramadan offers the chance to review your diet and exercise regime. Here, Swati Batu Das finds out how to recharge and keep fit while fasting

f you are fasting you should be reading this, and if you’re not, then we have you in mind as well. Is it safe and advisable to exercise while dry-fasting? What time is best for physical activities while fasting? Most of us think fasting will quickly lower our body weight even without exercising. Some might think that physical training without food and water could dehydrate the body and make the muscles weary. Well, according to experts; if you are fasting from dawn to dusk and still want to lose those extra kilos in a healthy way then Ramadan is the perfect time to achieve the right Body Mass Index (BMI) goal. It’s the holy month of Ramadan, a period of intermittent fasting for 30 days. But does that mean only fasting and not hitting the gym and refraining from walking and jogging? A theological answer might be sourced from Rumi’s statement “starve the body feed the soul”. The intermittent fasting during Ramadan has a primal spiritual benefit but the holy month also reminds us that the body and mind are not separate entities. There is no second thought on being theological but it is vital to seek some expert supervision while fasting, and keep your treadmill running. In response to the question of exercising before or after an iftar meal, Fathiya Abdullah Al Rashdi, a clinical dietician at the Ministry of Health, says blood sugar fluctuations can harm the body if one exercises shortly after eating food. Exercising on an empty stomach has been proven to increase the oxidative stress that claims to benefit the muscles. Light yoga or an early morning walk every day followed by a healthy breakfast is the key to good health, and its benefits are noticeable. Fathiya says: “It is always beneficial to exercise on an empty stomach like the one we do early morning. But during Ramadan, it is important to note that the body is without fluid for more than 12 hours. It is advisable to avoid exercises before the Maghreb prayer if you have diabetes or are suffering from other

lifestyle diseases.” Light exercises and walking just before iftar is beneficial only if the body permits. High-intensity exercises such as weight-training and running before iftar can lead to a loss of the water stored in our body, which can lead to severe dehydration and burning muscle tissues instead of fat. Fathiya says: “Ramadan is a good time to lose weight. Regular workouts including this fasting month can help to reduce weight gradually without harming the core functioning. “Exercising and fasting together maximises the impact of cellular factors and catalysts which force the body fat to breakdown for energy. But one needs to restore energy before the workout. One hour after iftar is the best time for aerobics or cardio. It is important to drink water and to keep the body hydrated while exercising.” Depending on your level of fitness, age and medical history, you must schedule any exercise during Ramadan carefully while considering the following factors:s: Food Wise The holy month offers the best opportunity to correct eating disorders. Breaking fast with dates is not only religious but dates are packed with medicinal properties. They not only replenish the body thereby controlling

your metabolism but can also help in controlling the glycaemic index. It is essential to monitor the intake of calories while fasting. Fathiya advises: “As people fast the whole day, there is a tendency to eat anything and everything during iftar. Eating all food at one time increases the risk of gastroenteritis and bloating. Iftar should be light and healthy. Drinking a lot of water helps to hydrate the body as well as in digesting food.” Iftar is the perfect time to consume healthy fruits and salads, soups, juices or laban (yoghurt drink). Avoid fried and sugary foods for iftar. A good combination of protein, carbohydrates and fat is essential after some rigorous exercise. Get some fresh air An outdoor activity such as walking or jogging by the beach or in a park an hour after the iftar meal is considered the most natural way to stay healthy. Hitting the gym and joining aerobic classes are good options for maximising any weight loss goals during Ramadan. Know your Limits Never force your body to lose weight if your health is not perfect or you feel too tired, suggests Fathiya. Keeping the body hydrated while physical training keeps muscle cramps at bay. A diabetic patient should avoid exercises on an empty stomach or immediately after consuming a meal. Avoid physical activities the moment you feel tired or dizzy due to fasting. Editor’s note: This article is not intended to be a substitute for professional advice, diagnosis or treatment. Nut-Free Trail Mix

While handfuls of choccies and nuts are a traditional Qaranqasho staple, nut allergies are an all-too-real factor to consider. Whip up this deliciously crunchy, salty-sweet nut-free trail mix in minutes and plunk it into some cute party loot-bags to pass out! Ingredients: § Sunflower seeds § Pumpkin seeds § Pretzels § Dark chocolate chips § Shredded coconut § Diced dried dates

§ Dehydrated bananas § Dehydrated strawberries § Raisins § Dried apricots § Dried cranberries § Dried blueberries § Flax seeds § Popcorn Method: § Mix all the dry ingredients together and store in a glass Pyrex container – it keeps for quite a while! (Source: www.handmadeforelle.com)

aranqasho not only marks the mid-way point of the Holy Month but it’s also a time when children dress up and go door-to-door, receiving candy, halwa, and sweets. To celebrate, we’re offering up some tantalising treats to tickle those tastebuds. Ramadan Kareem! It’s hard to believe we’re half-way through the Holy Month already – but we are, and Qaranqasho is upon us! This tasty tradition, unique to the Gulf region (and sometimes called ‘garangao’ in other Gulf countries) is held on the 15th day of Ramadan as a celebration for children and youth who have made it half-way through the fasting month. Kids dress up in their finest clothes, wear gold jewellery, don traditional attire, sing songs, and go door-to-door to collect candy, sweets, and nuts. It’s a time when families

in the community come together to enjoy one another’s company while the children are off filling their brightly-decorated bags to the brim with goodies. With larger celebrations taking place across the Sultanate at malls, schools, and community spaces, families can expect a variety of activities including face-painting and henna, traditional songs and narrated stories, and baggies filled with treats passed around. If you’re planning on celebrating Qaranqasho with your little ones this year, why not plan ahead and prep some special treats for the occasion? Here are a couple of sweetly-simple-to-make favourites!

Think of these hand-held treats as the Omani version of a brownie – only a million times sweeter! The perfect sugar rush (in moderation!), kids who nosh on one or two of these decadent squares will have enough energy to last them right through until suhoor! Ingredients: § ¼ cup (or 60g) butter § 2 tins (790g) Nestlé® Sweetened Condensed Milk § 1 tsp ground cardamom § ½ tsp saffron filament Method: § Melt butter in a deep saucepan. Add two tins of the NESTLÉ Sweetened Condensed Milk, and cardamom powder and cook over a medium heat, stirring constantly until the colour has become golden brown but not burnt. This should take about 40 minutes. § Once the halwa holds together and has a stretchy consistency, stir in saffron strands and remove from heat. § Allow the mixture to cool slightly before pouring into desired mould to fully cool. § Cut into shapes and serve.

hen it comes to international interpretations of Mexican cuisine outside of Mexico, foodies tend to fall into two different camps: those who go for Tex-Mex and are all over a platter of nachos and hot wings while espousing Mexican food, or those who’ve had one bad experience with a burrito repeating on them and have sworn never to go back for more. Both are terribly misguided. Authentic Mexican fare is homely, flavoursome, piquant and fresh; with ingredients that focus on simplicity and impact (no soggy tacos overdrenched in cheese here!). But finding this taste of authenticity abroad is as rare as hen’s teeth – and there are only a few restaurants in Muscat who offer it. The newly-opened Bomba Burrito in Mawaleh’s Al Muzn Mall is one of them. Located next to the Al Meera supermarket inside the mall, it’s a location that as of yet is still fairly low on foot traffic. This is a shame because this spot is a hidden gem. Decked out in vibrant lights and colours, their logo is creatively displayed inside a large red chilli. The restaurant boasts an open-air kitchen pass, an outdoor terrace, a small downstairs indoor seating area and a larger and much cosier upstairs level that is ideal for families and larger groups. Its décor is industrial-chic with a touch of fiesta; with exposed beams, rustic wooden tables and chairs that have been upholstered with vibrantly-coloured burro blankets. Meanwhile Mexicana pop art stencils adorn the walls. Adding to the ambience, they’ve hung brightlyhued dangling Ramadan cutouts – lanterns, crescent moons and stars that sway from the

Mexican street-food favourites with a focus on quality and authenticity at a reasonable price.
