One day I got a call from Justin Shumaker, telling me he wanted to do lunch. I’d just gotten off of a plane from Philly where we had just finished working a feature, I was tired and needed to recharge but Justin and I have always had a strong working relationship going back to my first solo project. Over the course of our 2 hour lunch Justin and I discussed doing a feature together and all the things that would encompass. We brought in, writer, Paul David to make sure we had addtional perspective to any story we decided to tell. Out came The Girl in the Mirror. As a director I was drawn to the concept of the film because I am a fan of the horror genre. I had always seen the American remake of an Asian horror film, so what I as a director wanted to see if we could do is a little reverse engineering and and do a slightly Asian take on a basic American genre film. It all started with the script, we took a basic teen concept -living on your ownand began layering it with other elements. We made the location in our feature an addtional character, we gave it history, we then surronded our main character with supporting characters that were nothing like her thus giving her the feel of isolation. Finally we added the fear, fear of the known and of the unknown, fear of things real and imagined. Next I brought in Charles Kelly to craft a score that matched the ideea and feel of the genre we were trying to mimic. After securing that aspect I sat down with Joey Alvarado and discussed the look the project would take on to support the atmosphere I was trying to create. The final piece was to be in post production, supplied by Tiais Post, and Justin Shumaker, and since they were there since the inception of the project it was very easy to conveve my vision t them. In the end The Girl in the Mirror became more then just my contribution to the genre but a collaborative work expressing the goals of a united team.
