Through human rights education, the Islamic people of Senegal come to their own understanding of human rights and democracy, triggering a re-evaluation of some ancient practices. As women learn of their right to good health, they stop the tradition of female genital cutting, which was thought to be a part of Islamic law. Boys, who as good Muslims had to beg for a living, are now given a chance for education and job training. Understanding the right to a life free from discrimination leads to the breakdown of cultural barriers between ethnic groups, allowing intermarriage and greater prosperity.

DIRECTOR’S BIO Kenny Mann grew up in Africa herself. She was born and raised in Kenya after her Polish/Romanian parents settled there after fleeing Hitler in 1939. She attended the University of Nairobi, which she graduated in 1968 with a degree in zoology, botany and chemistry. In 1969 she attended Bristol University in the UK with a post-graduate degree in Film Technology and Theater History.
She moved to the United States where she currently resides. Mann became a teacher in 1992 after she completed her Masters Degree in Education and has taught creative non-fiction writing as well as professional development for teachers.

DIRECTOR’S BIO – CONT. Over the past decade Mann has returned to filmmaking where she has worked on numerous documentaries and shorts. Her current documentary, Beautiful Tree, Severed Roots, is set against the backdrop of Kenya’s Colonial history and Independence, and explores personal identity and nationhood based on her parents’ lives as Jewish refugees who emigrated to Kenya in 1942.
She also has a feature-length script, Exposed, a post 9/11 thriller that is in its final draft.

FILMMAKERS Kenny Mann and Perry Finkelstein have worked together on every documentary that Mann has directed and produced. They have collaborated with one another for the past five years working on The Swahili Beat, Walking with Life: The Birth of a Human Rights Movement in Africa and Beautiful Tree, Severed Roots which is in post-production. Issa Saka, a Senegalese human rights activist, lends his voice as the narrator for Walking with Life.
After learning about human rights, Ouriye Sale abandoned her former profession as a female genital cutter and became a spokesperson for the the work of the human rights education organization known as Tostan.
