WIND RIVER MOUNTAIN RANGE, LAKES AND STREAMS

AT THE BASE OF the Wind River Mountain range in western Wyoming, Wind River View Campground is a 10acre paradise for everyone who loves the great outdoors. Antelope, deer, elk, and moose abound, and numerous fishing lakes and streams are just a short drive away.

Because the resort is so close to Bridger-Teton National Forest, visitors can see 3,439,809 acres of wooded area, several live glaciers, an outstanding example of a geologic landslide, and the state’s highest mountain, Gannett Peak.

If float trips and beautiful scenery are what you enjoy, be sure to take a trip with an experienced guide down the exciting white-water rapids of Snake River Canyon south of Jackson.

While you’re in the area, take time to drive through Jackson Hole, a 50-mile long, high mountain valley. Many large mammals and the rare trumpeter swan are among the wildlife inhabiting this area.

To the east, and just outside of the Bridger-Teton National Forest is Lander, the county seat of Fremont County, a county as large as some of the states to the east. Although grazing livestock is its chief role, it is also an important habitat for antelope, deer, elk, moose, and bighorn sheep.

While in the Lander area, you’ll want to stop at the Sinks Canyon State Park. Wildflowers, long stretches of white water, and a series of waterfalls can be seen along a 1.5 mile foot trail through a river gorge. Don’t miss seeing where the Popo Agie River vanishes into a canyon wall cave and reappears in a rise one-quarter of a mile down the canyon in a clear, trout-filled pool. Northwest of the town is where George Parker, alias Butch Cassidy, operated a horse ranch.

To the north of Lander is the town of Dubois, once a rendezvous point for trappers at the head of the Wind River Valley. Today it’s bordered by cattle and dude ranches and is a headquarters for cattle outfits, tie hack crews, and river tie drives.
