Who knew a great looking office could be affordable?

Location is everything. When screenwriters Ari and Rashad found a compact office space downtown, they knew it would make a perfect writers’ studio.

“It’s our Dream Factory, where we’re making our dreams come true and doing it our way.” But an attractive location comes with a high price tag.

The rent was more than they’d budgeted.

“We had to rethink what was important – a great location or expensive furniture,” Rashad explains.

Flexible, inspiring and affordable were their guideposts. Their downtown space wasn’t huge, so they had to make sure every space could multitask.

They also didn’t want it to feel boring.

“It’s gotta have style,” Ari says. “The last thing we want is a generic office.

It’s got to feel like us.”

They went online to find everything they needed. “It was easier than we thought. We were done in no time, and

One of the first changes they made was adding more informal meeting space. Reading and chatting zones were created with comfortable armchairs, open bookcases, and mood lighting. Communal tables, pendant lamps, and plants helped transform the canteen into a welcoming space to toss around ideas over a cup of tea.

Even their conference rooms were given a lift. No more dark, heavy furniture that had begun to feel dated, uncomfortable and uninspiring.

A feel-good zone When Heike and Beate opened their wellness space, they didn’t want to limit themselves. Their varied interests led to creating an airy meeting place that’s part fitness centre, shop, and café. Its open feel and relaxing atmosphere, are part of the reason it’s become a favourite with locals.

“Our co-working space is popular with local freelancers and digital nomads,” Heike tells us as she gestures to an area along lined with bar tables and stools. “We want people to feel good when they’re here because we feel good working here.”

The first thing you notice when you enter Aisha’s bed and breakfast is how welcoming it feels. The sounds of the city seem to disappear. Maybe it’s her laidback spirit, or the charming atmosphere that sparks our desire to stay a while.

When Aisha first took over this place, it lacked any sense of character. Aisha tells us over a cup of tea, “It didn’t make you want to spend much time here.” Aisha changed that with the help of a design mood board, a cosy colour palette, and a little help from her local IKEA. Thanks to IKEA, Aisha was able to map out exactly what she needed to create an idyllic bed and breakfast.

She settled on a mix of office and home furnishings to get the right feel and functionality. She also created 1 2

Ensuring communal spaces that exude a welcoming feel was important for Aisha. Instead of small café-style tables, she decided to focus on larger tables for family style meals that could also encourage her guests to sit and chat a little longer.

“I wanted this to be a place where my guests could make new friends and trade travel experiences,” Aisha explains. And judging from how her guests love lingering over cups of teas or evening drinks, she’s on the right track.
