The architecture of each culture is a model of that culture's world, not of the world's shape, but of its underlying form. Between Silence And Light---Spirit In The Architecture Of Louis I.Kahn. John Lobell

Traditional Chinese painting always represent an endless trail heading for the mountain top. This is just like my pursuit for the art of architecture. Every step forward offers me a better view of the underlying form of our culture's world.

Village Lane Grid Exhibition Composition Order

Every lane tells the story of Canton Tropical and subtropical climates distinguish this region: abundant rainfall and sunshine, with no winter or snow, enable the local residents to develop the “Canton style of architecture and residence. With tall walls and site plans adjusted to wind direction, the lanes in Canton region can always throw shadow over pedestrians and protect them from the summer heat.

Village

The villages in Canton develop a special system - the “comb-like site plan. Houses are arranged precisely in lines or grids to create the "cool lanes" that throw shadow in summer time and facilitate ventilation.

Order

Structure is the giver of light. When I choose an order of structure that calls for column alongside of column, it present a rhythm of no light, light, no light, light, no light, light, no light, light. A vault, a dome, is also a choice of acharacter of light. Louis I.Kahn

The skylights in the exhibition rooms prevent sunlight from casting directly onto the exhibits or visitors. While in the hallway and corridors, the sunlight casts between the grid of beams and walls a contraction to the exhibition rooms. All together we will have the following section. 8:00 AM

Future SC2011 Competiotion FinalList Collorator: Yongyi Zhao, Qinglan Zheng Jiajian Chen Position: Teamleader, Chief Designer, Concept, 3D model, render Type: High-Rise City Complex Location: Nanjing, China Construction area: 60,000mp ㎥ If we have to develop massive structures in historical cities. Can we, the architects, strike a balance And inherit the soul of the ancient relics, the ever defining components of the cities?

Nanjing, Wall

Mountain, river, and wall

The walls tell the story of Nanjing Built in 1630 during the Ming dynasty, the Nanjing city wall has surrounded the central part of Nanjing for almost 400 years. Now, 22 kilometers of the wall still stand and, in my perspective, they are the soul of Nanjing. During this competition, I came up with a "Re-wall" system to activate the wall. On the right is my drawing of the remained wall and my illusion of Nanjing: mountains, rivers and walls.

Jiming Temple Yifeng Gate Ancient Wall Xiuqiu Park Xiuqiu Lake

The site embraces a nice landscape surrounding: hills(north and south), river and lake(north and south), walls and gate(east). We do not want a huge structure stand in the middle of such landscape. Instead, our building will act as the extension of the hills and river, thus we start from the restoration of the landscape: the podium rises and falls like hills.

Re-wall System

The task is to design a 120 meterhigh city complex, located next to the west-north corner of the Nanjing city wall. As a historic city and the capital of Jiangsu province, Nanjing is faced with a sharp conflict between development and preservation. In order to balance the development and the preservation of Nanjing's culture relics, we create such system:

Several bunch of "modern walls" varys from the ancient walls, together setting up a city-round walking&travelling path on the top of both walls. By connecting all the newly-built city complexs to the walls, we hope to activate this historical city.

Restore the landscape: the podium consists a set of "hills" and river as the representation of the site in ancient times.

the "modern walls" acts as transportation and construction

Ancient Spirit And Comtemporary Situation

The ancient China embraced a rather romantic lifestyle :

In my graduate thesis I faced the same context and situation: the site is on the boundry of Guangzhou's urban development, which means the tremondous new building project and the crowded urban villages happens in the same place,

Villas and moutains, poems and wines, the harmony between human and nature.

left:Wang Ximeng, Song Danasty (AD1300) Right: Yang Yongliang 2010. The art work on the right is actually a satire on the urbanism of comtemporaty China: the concrete building takes over the cities instead of the mountain scenary of ancient China.

Xie Shichen, Mountain Road, AD1550 Perspective was followed precisely by artists in the West, while Chinese paintings always represented a full view of mountain beyond our objective visual field. This piece of painting shows a classic composition in ancient China: the road is winding up

between the mountain rocks from the bottom to the very top of the canvas.
