A Brutal Cut
Instructor: Andrew Zago A cut broke the order of the box. Height, volume, orientation, and center of gravity were changed. There is a new face born and an area been overlapped. When we assign each face attribute, on the top part the back faces came to the front and the front faces came to the back. The cut broke the order of architecture. It not only evokes a kind of memorability as image which potentially responds to the urban relationship, but also brings out a brand new order inside a building which reconstructs and organizes the geometry, circulation, program...

The purpose of this competition is to find creative and innovative ideas to maximize the use of unused urban spaces in the Seoul metropolitan area and to suggest a three-dimensional use of urban infrastructure in the city where the land is not available. Here we are presented with a contemporary condition in which a return to the architecture of urban fragments finds that the ground has shifted beneath its feet. STUDIO

The 1GA studio introduces students to the central problems of architecture—geometry, form, and space— through the technologies of their description—diagramming, drawing, and model making. Introductory exercises emphasize the role of drawing and analysis as both descriptive and generative. Students pay close attention to the development of ideas that inform an iterative and creative process for working with many different media: from physical models, to two-dimensional drawings, to digital interfaces. The course culminates in the design of a small public building in Los Angeles.
Taken out of context of this projected drawing, the hexagonal plan of a Smoke cell may allude to different three-dimensional forms. For instance, a hexagon could also represent the plan of a cube rotated onto its vertex, a cube projected in isometric view, or a flat hexagonal tile. Draw these and any other possible cases in the same format, keeping in mind that the hexagon—although it will always be located in the same position in the top left corner of the page—will shift from plan to isometric view.

Playing Against Type
Instructor: Devyn Weiser Collaboration With: James Jiang
This project focuses the fictional iconography of the castle as a typology. We are interested in the castle not only because of its figurative relationship between objects and parts, but also its engagement with the fictional world and its power to generate multiple fictions or readings. For almost a hundred years, Disney has created plenty of animations including the “Princess Series”, which foreground the castle and its related symbolism. As a result, by proposing a castle for Disney’s Animation Studio, this typology both indicates the castle’s centrality to Disney’s history and materializes this history through architecture..

Experience (United States)
This seminar will exploit visual studies’ license to place architecture in a promiscuous relationship to art and will also take the anachronistic liberty of considering Scale as Content to be a curatorial time capsule- a missive from 1967 for us in our own fraught times. This wandering triad of works constructive, critical, and nihilist will be overlaid onto architecture to consider The X as place holder for a contemporary architectural expression - too reduced in profile to be form, too disturbing to be shape . Through a series of large constructive assemblies we will seek out contemporary Xs as a relevant - if ambiguous category for architectural expression. (Zago A., 2019)

The Rio del Sol STEAM (Science, Technology,Engineering, Art & Math) School is a new 900-student K-8 campus. The design intent was inspired by the Superintendent’s vision of creating a progressive, student-driven, and freedom-centric learning environment that embraces the history of the site. In response to this challenge, the campus was designed with no traditional barriers, as a place that would allow learning and teaching to evolve organically and simultaneously. “Tautos namai” in Vilnius, A New National Concert Hall
Zago Architecture Team: Wendy Guerrero, Pengju Hou, Zoe Maleeki, Long Pan, Yuchen Wang, Neil Vaquea
HiPhi is an automobile manufacturer headquartered in Shanghai, specializing in designing and developing electric vehicles. We collaborated with Neuni to design several showrooms in the Schematic Design phases remotely in Summer 2020. Each showroom shares the same idea, but we need to apply them in different sizes/conditions of the site.
This new National Concert Hall for Lithuania projects the feeling of an harmonious sound outward, from the orchestra, to the audience, to the architecture, to the city of Vilnius. It presents an original architectural expression in which a series of discrete elements - the concert halls, the foyer, the promenades - are choreographed into an expressive new urban symbol for Vilnius and a cultural symbol for Lithuania.

This project for the NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WORLD WRITING, SONGDO mutates the program of a museum as a tool to study the shift towards a paradigm of Species as opposed to the ubiquitous platform of Types. If Types are traditionally viewed as categories of standardization, and symbolic expressions of form, then Species are malleable entities that are in constant metamorphosis; adaptation and mutation are the main characteristics from Species.
