PERSONAL REFELCTION ---A LACK OF SPECIES DIVERSITY LEAVES THE URBAN FOREST VULNERABLE TO THREATS FROM PESTS, DISEASE, AND STRESS DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE. CURRENTLY OUR URBAN FOREST IS DOMINATED BY EUCALYPTS, PLANES, ELMS AND GUMS (CORYMBIAS). MANY OF THESE TREES WERE PLANTED AT THE SAME TIME DURING CONDENSED PERIODS OF PLANTING ACTIVITY, AND LARGE NUMBERS OF ELMS AND PLANES ARE NOW REACHING THE END OF THEIR USEFUL LIFE EXPECTANCY. (URBAN FOREST VISUAL) SO, THOSE MINORITY TREE TYPES NEED TO BE PLANTED MORE TO INCREASE THE DIVERSITY AND OTHER NEW TREES NEED TO BE PLANTED TO REPLACE THE TREES WHICH ARE HAVE LOW LIFE EXPECTANCY.

THE ANOTHER AIM OF OUR GAME IS ABOUT FOOD COMPOST IN THE RESTAURANT. CITY HARVEST IS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT AIMS TO HELP CHANGE THE WAY MELBOURNE THINKS ABOUT FOOD WASTE AND THE ENVIRONMENT. THE PROGRAM ENCOURAGES AND PROMOTES THE USE OF ON SITE FOOD WASTE COMPOSTING IN RESTAURANTS ACROSS MELBOURNE. THEY THEN COLLECT THE COMPOST FROM EACH RESTAURANT, AND USE IT TO GROW VEGETABLES ON ROOFTOPS OR PUBLIC SPACES WITHIN THE MELBOURNE CBD. MAYBE OUR GAME COULD COOPERATE WITH THIS ORGANIZATION SO THAT THE NEAR BY STORES COULD COMPOST THE WASTE FOOD TO BE THE FERTILIZER OF TREES WHICH IS BOTH BENEFIT TO THE FOOD RECYCLE AND GREEN ENVIRONMENT.

“RESCUE THAT TREE”

UNHEALTHY TREE ----

BY DISCOVERING THE UNHEALTHY TREES ON CAMPUS, WE HOPE TO PLAYERS TO FIND THE UNHEALTHY TREES TO START THE GAME. WHEN THEY FIND THOSE TREES, THEY START THE TASK TO RESCUE THEM BY FINDING THE FERTILIZER FIRST AND THEN WATER. FINDING THE FERTILIZERS AND REACH 20 POINTS, THEN UNLOCK THE NEXT GAME OBJECT. NEXT IS FINDING THE WATER SOURCE AND REACH 30 POINTS, TAKE THEM BACK TO THE UNHEALTHY TREE, AND YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY RESCUED A TREE!

FOUR DISTRIBUTED IN WHOLE CAMPUS PLAYER NEED TO FIND ONE OF THEM FIRST

FERTILIZERS DISTRIBUTED IN WHOLE CAMPUS

THERE ARE FOUR UNHEALTHY TREE IN THE CAMPUS AND MANY FERTILIZERS AND WATER STATION DISTRIBUTED. WE WANT TO PLAYER FIRST SEEKING THE UNHEALTHY TREE BY WALKING AROUND THE UNIVERSITY ENVIRONMENT. FERTILIZERS AND WATER ARE OUR PICK UPS. AND BY WALKING THE WHOLE CAMPUS, THE FERTILIZER AND WATER ALSO COULD BE FOUND. THUS, CHANGE THE WAY OF STUDENT WALKING ROUTE.

Our game “Green Guard is designed to let people participant in planting trees across three main public area near the university of Melbourne which are university square, Lincoln square and Arygle square. We have two main elements to plant a tree which are seeds and fertilizers. Seeds have different types and they all randomly distributed in this big area. The player have different level and each level have different pick up seeds and numbers of fertilize to plant a different types of tree. When players are level up, they take harder task in the game, I believe that reach the final level 10 is big challenge of all players and also when they complete the game, people would have much knowledge and experience of planting different trees and they have much concerns about our green forest environment surrounding them. As mentioned before, a lack of species diversity of trees is a significant problem, and that is why our game have different levels and the higher levels of player, the harder of game would be. High level players plant uncommon tree types require more scores to level up so that it would increase the numbers of these kind of uncommon tree types. For example, level 8 to level 9 need Therefore, the game help to increase the diversity of tree types that benefit to the forest environment.

Our game have two significant aims. One is about making people pay more attentions to our green environment which is have the same purpose of City of Melbourne. Our surrounding trees are important to human’s living environment however we have little concern and nearly no protections to them. Therefore, there are plenty of trees declining and dying every year which require removal from the landscape. Trees are a defining part of Melbourne and our parks, gardens, green spaces and tree-lined streets contribute enormously to the liveability of the city. But the trees are now under threat. we expect to lose 27 per cent of our current tree population in the next decade and 44 per cent in the next 20 years. (City of Melbourne) A healthy urban forest will play a critical role in maintaining the health and liveability of Melbourne. City of Melbourne is seeking citizen volunteers to help create resilient, healthy and diverse urban landscapes for the future. Citizen Foresters are trained and empowered to grow the urban forest and improve urban ecology by carrying out essential advocacy, monitoring and research tasks. Our game could help to this project and let more people participant in and be interested to it. A lack of species diversity leaves the urban forest vulnerable to threats from pests, disease, and stress due to climate change. (right diagram shows tree types of urban forest) The another aim of our game is about food compost in the restaurant. City Harvest is a not-for-profit organization that aims to help change the way Melbourne thinks about food waste and the environment. The program encourages and promotes the use of on site food waste composting in restaurants across Melbourne. They then collect the compost from each restaurant, and use it to grow vegetables on rooftops or public spaces. Now, the restaurants around the game area is just throw away leftovers as shown in right photos. Maybe our game could cooperate with this organization so that the near by stores could compost the leftover to be the fertilizer of trees which is both benefit to the food recycle and green environment.

Finally, each player need to plant 60 trees including six different types to complete the game.
