CAMPUS CENTER LOCATION DATE PROPERTY INSTRUCTOR

TONGJI UNIVERSITY, SHANGHAI, CHINA NOVEMBER, 2012 ACDEMIC INDIVIDUAL WORK ZHANG JIANLONG

SPECIFICATION

To solve the problem found in the research that the lack of lightening made the site a dark corner of the campus at night. I created several lamp-shaped rooms face the points needed to be lighted as the activity rooms of the clubs. When the rooms were used at night. The rooms will work as the night lamp of the campus as well.

Traffic core

As what the diagram shows, the circled area, where the site is, is on the most convenient way from the main enterance to the biggest domitory area and the second important enterance of the campus. So the site and its surrounding area can be called the traffic core of the campus.

Dark point

As a student live in the campus, i find that Time of light off every time i reach the circled area late at 21:00 night, especially when i walk alone, i feel 21:30 nervous and unsafe because of the lack of 22:00 lighting. According to 22:30 my statistics, architectures which mainly used 23:00 for teaching around the site close earlier than other buildings in the campus, which make the site a dark point at night.

Three layers

The campus center is a combination of three layers of public space. The first layer is an open gallery which exhibit the wall painting and doodle. The second layer is the public space serve the clubs in the campus center which work as the main traffic of the clubs. The third layer is the clubs which are isolated as several small blocks to keep the privacy of the activities of each club.

Searchlight effect

As what i have researched, the site plays a very important role in the traffic of the campus as well as the system of public activities. However, when it comes to late at night, this area comes to be the dark point in the campus, which means little fasination and feeling of safe at night. So what i did in my design of the project was making the campus center to be the vigour unit to motivate the energy of this area. I made different functions of the campus to be small searchlight-like units which respectively face to the points need lighting in this area at night, using the searchlight effect to light the dark point up.

Cross the site

The site is located on the end of the main road from an enterance to the domitory area in the campus, which also means that the site is a sudden cut of the sight and traffic. People have to turn around when arriving this point. So one of the most important problem i should solve is giving the perticular area a defination, crossing the site. I make the view cross from east to west and the traffic cross from north to south.

Basic plane

As what we can see in the site, the site is located on a public intersection which is surrounded with teaching buildings and other canpus service bulidings. On the other word, here exist a basic plane which provide people with area for public activities. So in the design of the site, i tried to add a vitality body attached to the campus center which can reorganize the order of the site and its surroundings. Along with surrounding functions, i want to use the first plane space of the campus center to create a basic plane for the site. The first plane area is not only the function for the doodle gallery, but also serve for the surrounding buildings. It has the extended meaning of publicity. In the design, i dream to see the view that the students can have a place to have a rest after class, to read in the morning and to chat with friends. Altogether, i want to make the place to be ‘basic’, which means that the site will bear all the basic public functions and give the users basic memory of the place.

Doodle gallery

There usually exist doodle culture in the university campus which come from the creative work of the university students. In the doodle culture in the campus, the students are not only the audience but also the performer. The site is the lacated on the core of the campus which is surrounded with teaching buildings and campus service buildings, which means that the site needs some fasinating activities to create public vitality. The doodle gallery provide a place for the performer to create the doodle on the loose-organized walls. At the same time, the gallery also give the audience a place to watch the performance while having a rest after class.

UNDERGRADUATE THESIS LOCATION DATE PROPERTY INSTRUCTOR

JIANXI DISTRICT, LUOYANG, CHINA APRIL, 2015 ACDEMIC INDIVIDUAL WORK ZHANG PENG

SPECIFICATION

The topic of my graduate design was the regeneration design and plan of a historic neighbour which used to be the residence area of the nearby industry base. I paid attention to the background of the residents as well as the architectures’. So that i can use the result of research to redefine the neighbour and the residents, which help me to reorganize the structure of the community and social group.

Localization of this area is serve as residence and social service for this important industrial base in middle China.

There exist three great masses of construction since 1950s which each has its own symbol related to the perticular age and social envirenment.

Architecture Height

Most of the architectures have less than 6 floors which indicate that this area has lower density of pupulation and not suitable for high rises.

Simplification illusion

It’s the common illusion diffused among people in China in 1950s~1960s to simplify the society to be one with strong uniformity. People in that age had the similar dressing, had meal in huge canteen together. They even held the similiar world view which now seems to be ridiculious. So that the biggest group in the residents, who experienced that special period themselves, has a great sense of belonging to the community as well as the social group.

Symbol mania

The residents grew in the age diffused with symbol mania, for example, almost everyone had a ‘Chairman Mao’s quotation’ and a ’green service cap’. This kind of symbol mania came from an extreamly simple judgement on correctness.

Solid idol adoration

I didn’t try to find what lead to the reasonless solid idol adoration, but try to analyze the result and effect on this perticular generation. As the background knowledge, the last 50 years witnessed the rocket development of economy in China as well as the ideology. The westerners may can’t believe how strong the generation gap is after one leap of Weltanschauung progress after another in such a short time. As a result, the researched community can also be viewed as a mass of old ideology whose most significant feature is the solid idol adoration.

Socialism

During the research in this community, i found a kind of ‘community socialism’, which consist of a series share. Public space, food, life tools even life experience and their own stories. The self defination of this generation is members of the whole instead of individuals.
