Traffic core

As what the diagram shows, the circled area, where the site is, is on the most convenient way from the main enterance to the biggest domitory area and the second important enterance of the campus. So the site and its surrounding area can be called the traffic core of the campus.

Dark point

As a student live in the campus, i find that every time i reach the circled area late at night, especially when i walk alone, i feel nervous and unsafe because of the lack of lighting. According to my statistics, architectures which mainly used for teaching around the site close earlier than other buildings in the campus, which make the site a dark point at night.

conbination

Three layers

The campus center is a combination of three layers of public space. The first layer is an open gallery which exhibit the wall painting and doodle. The second layer is the public space serve the clubs in the campus center which work as the main traffic of the clubs. The third layer is the clubs which are isolated as several small blocks to keep the privacy of the activities of each club.

2nd layer

Searchlight effect

As what i have researched, the site plays a very important role in the traffic of the campus as well as the system of public activities. However, when it comes to late at night, this area comes to be the dark point in the campus, which means little fasination and feeling of safe at night. So what i did in my design of the project was making the campus center to be the vigour unit to motivate the energy of this area. I made different functions of the campus to be small searchlight-like units which respectively face to the points need lighting in this area at night, using the searchlight effect to light the dark point up.

1st layer

Cross the site

The site is located on the end of the main road from an enterance to the domitory area in the campus, which also means that the site is a sudden cut of the sight and traffic. People have to turn around when arriving this point. So one of the most important problem i should solve is giving the perticular area a defination, crossing the site. I make the view cross from east to west and the traffic cross from north to south.

Basic plane

As what we can see in the site, the site is located on a public intersection which is surrounded with teaching buildings and other canpus service bulidings. On the other word, here exist a basic plane which provide people with area for public activities. So in the design of the site, i tried to add a vitality body attached to the campus center which can reorganize the order of the site and its surroundings. Along with surrounding functions, i want to use the first plane space of the campus center to create a basic plane for the site. The first plane area is not only the function for the doodle gallery, but also serve for the surrounding buildings. It has the extended meaning of publicity. In the design, i dream to see the view that the students can have a place to have a rest after class, to read in the morning and to chat with friends. Altogether, i want to make the place to be ‘basic’, which means that the site will bear all the basic public functions and give the users basic memory of the place.

Doodle gallery

There usually exist doodle culture in the university campus which come from the creative work of the university students. In the doodle culture in the campus, the students are not only the audience but also the performer. The site is the lacated on the core of the campus which is surrounded with teaching buildings and campus service buildings, which means that the site needs some fasinating activities to create public vitality. The doodle gallery provide a place for the performer to create the doodle on the loose-organized walls. At the same time, the gallery also give the audience a place to watch the performance while having a rest after class.

SPECIFICATION

The topic of my graduate design was the regeneration design and plan of a historic neighbour which used to be the residence area of the nearby industry base. I paid attention to the background of the residents as well as the architectures’. So that i can use the result of research to redefine the neighbour and the residents, which help me to reorganize the structure of the community and social group.

Localization of this area is serve as residence and social service for this important industrial base in middle China.

There exist three great masses of construction since 1950s which each has its own symbol related to the perticular age and social envirenment.

Architecture Height

Most of the architectures have less than 6 floors which indicate that this area has lower density of pupulation and not suitable for high rises.

Simplification illusion

It’s the common illusion diffused among people in China in 1950s~1960s to simplify the society to be one with strong uniformity. People in that age had the similar dressing, had meal in huge canteen together. They even held the similiar world view which now seems to be ridiculious. So that the biggest group in the residents, who experienced that special period themselves, has a great sense of belonging to the community as well as the social group.

Symbol mania

The residents grew in the age diffused with symbol mania, for example, almost everyone had a ‘Chairman Mao’s quotation’ and a ’green service cap’. This kind of symbol mania came from an extreamly simple judgement on correctness.

Solid idol adoration

I didn’t try to find what lead to the reasonless solid idol adoration, but try to analyze the result and effect on this perticular generation. As the background knowledge, the last 50 years witnessed the rocket development of economy in China as well as the ideology. The westerners may can’t believe how strong the generation gap is after one leap of Weltanschauung progress after another in such a short time. As a result, the researched community can also be viewed as a mass of old ideology whose most significant feature is the solid idol adoration.

Socialism

During the research in this community, i found a kind of ‘community socialism’, which consist of a series share. Public space, food, life tools even life experience and their own stories. The self defination of this generation is members of the whole instead of individuals.

Social memory

When talked about the old architectures with low physical quality, we are always tend to distinguish if the architectures are historical architectures, which can used as the basis of the strategy to deal with them. However, in such a community, whose residents have more than 50-year-long memory with the architectures and witness every change in the neighbour, the value of the architectures shouldn’t be assessed as usual. The architectures have long been the carrier of the common memory of the small social group. On the other hand, the architectures which were built in several construction mass are also a miniature of the memory of the city. Political features and characteristics of the times can be easily read from the architectures. The information expressed by them is not the style or the art, but what the city and the residents experienced.

The site i choosed to design a new community center in existed three origianl residence buliding which were built in 1980s, the age of the second wave of construction in China in the past century, to meet the residence requirement of increasing population. The three residence architectures, along with the historical architectures built in 1950s, formed an interesting series of sections which we can find valuable facorto preserve and problem to solve in. The series of sections of the several architectures endowed an order to the center space among the historical architectures which can be a valuable factor to be maintained in the new design. At the same time, the quality of the architectures was too poor to be preserved. And the existance of the architectures cut the connection between the historical architectures, which should be solved.

According to the research of the history of the evolution of the public space in this community, the form of the public space is always changing to meet the changing requirement of the community, especially with the special background of high-speed developing China whose evolution of public functions is unbelievably fast. During the process of the mapping of the community, problems in the public functions came out. Firstly, the public space lacked well organized structure. As we saw in the community, most public activities happened in the center greening. However, the activities were badly organized. So we made a typological research about the public activities happened in the community including the most popular position of public activities and the relationship of position, time, type and heat of public activities. And i reorganized the public space structure and arranged most suitable functions into the community center.

The remained

To preserve the memory beared by the old architectures, i tried to maintain the pattern of the old buildings which were built in the second construction wave in 1980s. The three buildings have no style value, but i try to conserve part of the structure and facade to be the skin of the new community center.

The added

At the same time of preserving part of the old buildings, i also added new form for the new requirement of the community. According to the result of the community and the analyze of activity habit. I add plenty of pieces of public space into the community center on different height.

The crossed

An important problem in the design of historical community is how to connect the historical architectures with the new community center. I use pathes across the gardens and the galleries connect the roof gardens to make the traffic go across the community center.

Logic of preservation

The strategy of preservation of the old architectures’ facade came from the modular of the construction of the old building. And i choosed to preserve part of the wall of the old architecture which can fit the function and requirement of the community center to be the second layer of skin of the new architecture.

Fragmentation

In the design of the community center, i tried to change the big simple greenland into small pieces of stereo greening connected with community center functions which are more suitable to the form of the residents’ social activities.

Flow

The site of the community center, which used to be the open space searving the neighbour, is surrounded by the historical architectures. I tried to create a kind of flow to restruct the original characteristic.

Integration

The integration of the social activities is a kind of remodeling of collective life in the residents’ memory. Actually, the residents have never abandoned this kind of life habit. Integration is a possible way to combine the life memory with new life requirement.

Sight control

The original old architectures built in 1980s, which were built simply for the rigid demand, rudely cut the sight in the neighbour. I choosed to make several cut in the volume to maintain the sight which create historical atmosphere.

Plate and food

When an architecture comes to it’s end of life, we choose to ruin it and make room for the new one. But how it comes when the poor architecture bears the common memory of a community? To maintain the plate and put new food is my try in the design.

Tree chat

Why the vertical greening is needed? The conclusion comes from the result of the statistics of the residents’ choose of the chat place that the residents are tend to chat in a greening surrounding place.

GUIZHOU, CHINA OCTOBER, 2015 PROJECT IN ICDA WANG HONGJUN

SPECIFICATION

The project is a tomb museum in Yinguan, Guizhou whose aim is to protect a recently found tomb built in Han Dynasty, whose history is more than 2000 years. To meet the requirement that the tomb is not allowed to be investicated before the archeologists have prepared well. The two proposals of the project try to design a surround type museum to make the tomb in the center, which allow the visitors to see the original status of the tomb in a short distance. At the same time, this method of protection make it possible that the archeologists can investigate the ancient tomb even if the museum has been built already.
