01 BLADE RUNNER Architectural storyboarding Site: The Flim Blade Runner Supervisor: Roberto Requejo Belette MArch 2 Thesis Blade Runner (1982) and its sequel Blade Runner 2049 (released in 2017) are set in a dystopian future where humans live in a high-tech but lowlife environment with synthetic humans called replicants as their slaves. The film was regarded as one of the best science fiction films for speculating a retrofit future. Similarly, architects always concern with contemporary issues and project a future. The thesis explores the potential of a film serving as a site of analysis and speculation for an architectural proposition. If film and site both can become a territory subject, what are the implications of relying on a fictitious territory as a generator for the design of spaces? With the notion of the film being the site, the analysis focuses on the timeline, storyboarding and scenes where the story plays out and then a missing scene is identified as the potential of an expanded story. The design is to construct a narrative with a greater scope than real projects. It is a design of the universe, a speculative reality with urbanism, architecture, interiority along with characters all serve as components of the narrative.

FILM AS SITE A contextual analysis is a research activity that looks at the existing conditions of a project site, along with any potential future conditions. For a real architectural project, the site analysis will look at issues such as site location, size, topography, zoning etc.
While for a film, the story happens within limited time to show us a story. Thus, I developed a way to in order to understand the site as much as possible. The timeline, storyboarding, and scenes are basic structure to analyze the film.

Freysa Freysa is the leader of a growing replicant resistance movement.
Sapper Sapper is an escaped replicant and settled at his farm in 2020.
06.10.2021 Replicant Community
On 6 Oct 2021, Ana the first human-replicant hybrid was born. Rachael died in childbirth while Deckard left and took refuge in the ruins of Las Vegas, never seeing Rachael again nor meeting their child. Rachael was buried in Sapper Morton’s farm, next to tree with written numbers 06.10.21. To Replicants, Ana represents something which is more important than her own individuality. She is first replicant-born child, a figure-head, an archetype, a myth-maker, she is their Eve.
SYMBOLS Symbolic meanings for replicants
The replicant resistance army is a secret army gathering together and seek for opportunities to fight back. Since replicant can have natural born child, they are no longer willing to obey order from humans.
The scenes related to the replicant resistance army is extracted from the film. Each has specific meaning that influence the design of fragments.

02 INDIVIDUALIZED
LIVING
Concrete Volumetric Precast for Individulized Living in Hong Kong Location: Hong Kong Supervisor: Olivier Ottevaere MArch 1 academic group work Mass produced precast elements have increasingly been favored by the housing sector in Hong Kong and China. While the support for precast housing models are more aimed at maximizing real estate profits for developers and at reducing the construction cost for affordable housing, they often fall short to internally offer better spatial and living qualities to its prospective residents and to generate a vibrant community structure from within. The project rethinks Hong Kong housing from a technological point of view with social consequences. By decompacting existing central cores into varies functional columns, the project proposes new three-dimensional precast prototypes that reassert the individual as the main protagonist for the making of their own living environment. This will be investigated through ideas of mass customization at the factory line and through assembly scenarios of precast volumetric units.

HOUSING TYPES Varios housing types from single apartment to four-bedroom apartments.
The idea of precast 3D units is inspired by pysical experiment of casting concrete. The real construction process is just as the concrete model making: casting living units using formwork and then stacking them layer by layer.
A long time ago, our ancestors built their own house. They arranged space according to their own needs and they had the lifestyle they wanted. Now, we only have limited choices when choosing an apartment in a city. In this project, we try to maximize the freedom for residents to choose the housing type by first arranging different functional columns and then divide their dream house by grabbing these functional columns with floor slabs. In this project, we studied the plasticity of concrete materials, and use it as a spatial potential to create more variations for architectural space. Specifically, we arrange functional spaces like kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedroom vertically in appropriate size so that a vertical functional concrete column with changing profile is formed. These functional columns are arranged freely on an architectural plan, and living units are formed by grabbing these columns with different floor slabs. During the process, the spaces between the columns can become either interior living or leisure space or exterior balcony or communal space. The floor slabs are arranged in different height in order to provide more privacy for every single living unit. The plasticity of concrete allows for more freedom for the changing profile of concrete functional columns, which actually provides more special variety and more choices of living units.
INDIVIDULAIZED LIVING The changing profile of concrete functional columns provide possibilities of various housing types

THE CRYSTAL
IN HIBRE ISLAND A Lighthouse, Lifeboat Launch and Rangers Station Location: West Kirby, UK Supervisor: Sandy Britton BArch 3 academic individual work Every year thousands of people are affected by treacherous seas: ships hit rocks, sailors and fisherman lose their direction and swimmers get into a spot of deadly trouble. Still seas become stormy, low tides are suddenly high and people need warning, guiding and rescuing. In this project, the lighthouse tower will warn and guide. The life boat station will house and launch search and rescue .The rangers’ station will monitor and observe. The aim of this design is to bring out essential material qualities and fulfil the ‘vocation’ of the site. Concrete and glass are two essetial materials used in this project. The tower houses rangers station along with the lighthosue and sightviewing spaces, it has solid concrete inside with translucent glass outside. In contrast. the boathouse has solid concrete outside with translucent membrane inside. These two are connected by a concrete bridge, so that the internal concrete in the lighthouse becomes the external concrete wall of boathouse.

DIVERSITY Design and Construction Guidelines for Unit Scale Upgrades of Urban Villages Location: Shenzhen, China Supervisor: Juan Du MArch 2 academic group work Half of the population in Shenzhen are currently having their living place in urban villages. The developr was carrying out urban village renovation project in order to monopolize the supply of housing in the future. What the developer proposed is the replacement of current unit types with a standardized single/ 2 ppl apartments targeting high-income people, mainly professionals and highly-educated graduates. However, compared to developer’s proposal, the current condition is much more better for the fact that the existing housing units types allowing diverse living. The clearance and displacement of low-income population has been raising much public criticism. Thus, after a comprehensive analysis of the existing urban village and the developer’s proposal, we developed a design & construction guideline in housing unit scale for the both the authorities and developers on how to carefully design renovation steps for urban villages.
PINGSHAN VILLAGE
RENOVATION PROCESS Diagrammatic analysis of construction process
Some developers are trying to intervene the urban village to launch urban village renovation projects, especially for the largest property company in China- Vanke. During their intervention, tenants in urban villages have various attitude towards their actions.
In ideal condition, the renovation can be completed within 90 days. However, due to all kinds of practical issure, the construction time takes much longer than expected. From construction point of view, pre-fab units can save much contruction time.

The drawings of the current condition recorded the current living conditions in Pingshan Village, Shenzhen. They are all tenants who rent the units for temporary living and wish for a better living environment. The external walls are kept and some partition walls are carefully removed for installation of prefab bathroom, kitchen units as well as window kit. Tenants’ individual needs can be met and construction time can be saved using pre-fab units and minimum demolishment, which can release the displacement issue. The government support the renovation project by providing fund to the developers and clear guidelines to regulate the redevelopment. PRODUCTION FUNCTION Investigations in Late Industrial Forms & Bring Production Functions Back to Cites Location: Central, Hong Kong Supervisor: H. Koon Wee MArch 1 academic individual work The modern city was first formed as an industrial city, now it sought to partition and simplify the various functions of a city into housing, commerce, recreation, industry, and so on. In a sense, the physical industry may have left Hong Kong, but the financialization and corporatization of industries have not. As such, this project seeks the possibility to bring back a new production function in Hong Kong. This project did not focus too much on the design of the garment workshops itself, but on the architectural interventions on the existing site and figured out the possible reasons to bring the production functions back to Li Yuen Street East and West (a bazaar selling cheap clothes and souvenirs) in Central. By stealing the public space between the streets, what was merely consumption strees can become a centre with mutiple functions and cuold bring people from different fields together.
Bespoke Tailors: mapping from production to consumprion
Fast Fashion: mapping from production to consumprion
PRODUCTION STRATEGY A mixture of functionsL fashion school, tailor’s workshop, accessaries workshop, fabric store.
Li Yuen Street East and West are two streets in Central that chosen to experiment the new production strategy. The existing fabric market and local venders that selling fabric accessories are to be inter-related within the new production system.
By plugging in units of fabric stores tailor’s workshop and fashion school, the orginal commercial street can become a centre with mutiple functions and could bring people from different fields together.
STAGE 1 LOCAL FABRIC STORE OWNER MR. FA Mr Fa is a tailor and currenly runnung a fabirc shop in LiYuen Street. He feels very pround when local fashion design school students seek him for help on choosing fabircs and some tips for sewing clothes. Now he is thinking of cooperate with his neighbour who is also an owner of a fabric market on opening workshops for making clothes and clothes alterations. He rents two rooms upstairs for living and working. Mr Fa asks the archtects to help on refurbishing the rooms and stealing public space by building extented balconies or workshop boxes.
STAGE II FASHION SCHOOL The headmaster of a fashion school chooses Li Yuen Street as the site for building another campus because there are many tailors and clothes vendors in the site. He establishes an educational institution using plug in structure by buying airrise zoing from building owners. He also rents two floors for offices ues. As a reward for the socielty, the headmaster opens User Experience Workshop to educate the public on about garment and fashion, teaching them basic skills of cutting and sewing the fabrics and design simple tees.
STAGE III FASHION SCHOOL, TAILOR SHOPS AND LOCAL VENDORS Tailors are invited to work as part time tutors in the workshops sponsered by fashion school. Tailors can also use the workshops for their own business as a reward, thus comsumers can customize the suit or shirt in the design school. By doing so, the tailrs don’t need to worry about the high rent and consumers can have a direct interection with tailors. After that, local vendors are thinking of cooperate together to open accessories workshops since there are so many wasted fabric left from the design school. They use the waste fabric to make handbags and other fabric accessories and then sell them to consumers directly in their shops.
FOREST SCHOOL
African School Project Location: Malawi, East Africa 2019 Competition project
Malawi grew on barren soil, drought and saltwater intrusion, but poverty, AIDS, along with lack of education are the root causes of the dilemma, and this land is the home of the villagers. Their heavy dependence on agriculture are the main concerns. Our project deals with African democratization, universal education and gender equality. Education is a human right and is central to achieving many other sustainable development outcomes. The school, students’ dormitory and teachers’ houses are under the same roof. It is a big shelter to embrace different programming and children. It aims provide a better access to education for the youngest citizens of the country. The children are under the roof that can protect them from sun and rain, and more importantly, they are under the protection of knowledge.
