Yuhan Chen Fashion Management Portfolio

Introduction

My name is Yuhan Chen. I am a Chinese student currently studying at Okanagan Mission Secondary School in Canada. This is my final year doing 6 courses: Careers, English, Peer Tutoring, Psychology, Advanced drawing / painting and Calculus.

Growing up in a multicultural global living and studying environment, I have been fortunate to engage in the diverse and fast changing fashion field. Whether it be online or offline, I enjoy immersing myself in any fashion occasion. I am also curious about different subject matters which could also inspire new ideas. Such synergies help me to cultivate an awareness of fashion trends and intend to continue developing my knowledge and experience in this subject.

While identifying the dynamics of the fashion industry, I also enjoy exploring fashionrelated experiences. These experiences include initiating research, studying the different mechanisms, and participating in fashion events to which I can reach out. I believe this has helped improve my understanding of the fashion industry as a multidisciplinary major.

Fashion management, as an industry which combines many sectors together, involves the development of sectors like technology, new marketing methods, or cultural myths and trends from different countries that can also facilitate a very fast changing dynamic and proliferation in fashion management and in marketing.

Following this “journey” with my portfolio, I wish to demonstrate my preliminary susceptibility to the fashion industry and adherence to my project based practices. It would be an honour to have the opportunity to attend the course at UAL in which I would be able to cultivate my academic potential and engage with more global-fashion resources, academics, classmates, and professionals.

Beijing Fashion workshop

Workshop Introduction

In the summer holiday of 2021, there was one week of fashion design workshop was held in Beijing. It was a great pleasure for me to lead the design team during this workshop event.

This workshop program consisted of 3 sections: design inspiration seminars, workshop and final presentation.

Contacting with other resource, material and fabric suppliers. Reporting progress to workshop leader. There were 4 teams joined in this workshop, and I was leading the team 2 with 5 teammates. My responsibilities included:
the workshop team leader

Workshop Schedule

We made a 7 day schedule for the project which contains 3 major processes: planning, production and final presentation.

• Day 1 Content: Researching and making inspirational sketchbook, gathering design ideas from all team members.

• Day 2 Content: Discussion seminar on final selection of design inspiration and finalising the design of the garment.

• Day 3 Content: Liaison with material and fabric suppliers in local market.

• Day 5 Content: Phase 2: Making the garment based on the design ideas.

• Day 6 Content: Liaison with photography and stage setting teams. Getting preparation for the final show.

• Day 7 Content: The final fashion show presentation

• Day 4 Content: Phase 1: Making the garment based on the design ideas.

Beginning with the inspirational sketchbook making :

Everyone in our team submitted our own design motifs and related research materials.

After one day brainstorming session, our team decided to proceed our garment design based on the idea of appearance anxiety, which regularly exists among the young.

Inspiration planning

Appearance anxiety is very common social phenomenon among young people nowadays.

People care about how themselves look publicly? How they look in front of camera and how they present themselves.

Influenced by commercial and cosmetics advertising industries, these can heighten awareness of appearance more sensitively into anxiety.

Design and Making

Our team analysed keywords of this topic appearance anxiety , then we started to draw the design in the sketchbook.

Meanwhile, we researched the fabrics and materials we can use, for example, plastic and PVC materials.

These synthetic materials symbolise the concept that people conceal themselves in artificial presents.

We divided our team into 2, one small group in charge of the inner garment sewing, the other one was responsible for the making of dress pannier.

At the end of this workshop, we prepared a runway show to present the final garment design from each team.

.

We also invited a photographer to record this runway show and created our lookbook of the design,

Workshop review

This workshop was fun and intensive, which brought fashionloving individuals and emerging stars together. We had learn about cooperation, project management, research skills, marketing skills, and leadership skills during this workshop. The importance of cooperation and development of a fashion show is critical. Knowing how to make the people on the stage shine is an art by itself. The work put in backstage is very complex and must do well for the show to succeed.

3D virtual 3D virtual cclothing lothing management in management in Metaverse Metaverse

Introduction

The metaverse concept became a burgeoning field in recent years, especially during covid time, people tended to look for more potential for web 3 experiences online. Combined with blockchain technology, 3D design, and backend IT infrastructure, I believe the metaverse experience will bring a brand new online experience to people.

While I looked into this field, I found a UK metaverse startup company CosmosX which is interested in Chinese market and globally. Fortunately, after an online interview, I got this internship opportunity from them (https://cosmosx.io).

The metaverse is a 3D online platform which bridges commercial entities, creators and users. CosmosX City, which functionally divided into 4 districts: commercial, financial, education and cultural district.

Before launching the whole platform there were a lot of preparations need to do.

My role in this internship was virtual clothing management assistant, I was in charge of researching potential 3D clothing creators and promoted the metaverse marketplace to them, which this marketplace can help designers encourage their sales.

Creating avatar skeleton on CosmosX platform. 3D modelling design in blender. Avatar rigging: importing into the blender, creating bones, joints and skeletal structure of the avatar. Avatar kinematics movement testing, importing the avatar into the CosmosX metaverse platform. I also assisted to creating avatar and workflow, in order to demonstrate the use cases for 3D designers to understand how their clothing design can be used in the metaverse. 1. 2. 3. 4. Architecting avatar workflow

Firstly, I had a research of all keywords related to 3D design or virtual clothing etc., interestingly, people use these tags on social media all showed interests to metaverse.

Then, I studied the designers personal styles and matched with our audience targeting. We used a shared online CRM form system to track my work performance, which made my goal more clearly to achieve.

I recorded these designers information into CRM form, and this “engagement suite” can show clear progress of lead nurturing and performance tracking.

School Fashion Design Competition

Introduction

I conceived an idea about the concept of a school fashion design competition throughout the summer of 2022. Since some fashion trends are becoming increasingly popular in the international school I am studying in Canada.

I was honoured to be the one who initiated this competition. This 11-day competition was scheduled from May 24 to June 3 in 2022. Also, thanks to the support from our school principal, media art tutors, and sewing teachers.

The fashion style is influenced by two themes: a salute to the past and a vision of the future.

Around these two motifs, we encouraged our schoolmates who are passionate about fashion to join in this competition.

The purpose of this competition is to broaden students' fashion senses and to encourage our school community engagement through fashion activities. It also improves cultural communication from students from different countries.

The goal of OKM Secondary School Fashion Design Competition is to cultivate the ability of students who are interested in fashion, help students to understand how a fashion idea can be developed. Participating in this activity to show students' possibilities, show what they have learned and how it can be improved. Surrealism artwork Collection

Introduction

After I studied the surrealism art trend in art history, I decided to create my own collection where I can explore and record my unconsciousness fantasy world.

This surrealism art collection was my own art project which originated from my fantastical dreams since I was little.

Meanwhile, after I completed this collection "Dream" by using drawing and photoshop, I planned and organised an exhibition in school to display this art trend and exhibit my art manifesto .

I believe it would be intriguing to have this art exhibition to discover the possibilities of dreaming and encourage our school cultural and art engagement environment.

I studied and researched the surrealism

trend, which was a revolutionary milestone that combines art and psychology in art history. Surrealism is a style of art that emphasises the subconscious and irrational.

In order to achieve this "Dream" collection, I started with some strong concepts, which inspired by my dreams and the subconscious.

Then, I used unexpected combinations of imagery, combining disparate objects in a single composition.

I played with scales, proportions and perspectives to create a sense of disorientation.

Also, I experimented with different techniques, such as collage and photomontage to create a sense of layering and multiple realities.

Surrealism artwork exhibition

This was the exhibition of my surrealist artworks. I contacted the school facility office, and we decided to have my "Dream" art collection exhibited in the school space. I am pleased to be a member of the school community and let our school students participate with my project.
