INSIDE OUTSIDE

FROM ABANDONED MALL TO VIBRANT COMMUNITY

PROJECT IN A GLANCE After the discovered of the oil field in Texas, the center of Dallas experienced a great population increase and urban sprawl in the last century. However, after centering the economy in downtown, many suburban areas are facing a developing problem now. Located in the south of the downtown, the Redbird Mall is almost abandoned currently. There is not enough population to go to the mall, and the highway system made this large mall an isolated island. But there are still some opportunities, there is a large park just beside the mall, which make it possible to create a green infrastructure. Also, after redesign the transportation system it is possible to make the mall a part of the community. So the design idea is to fragmented to large parcel, and take advantage of the existing footprint of the mall to create a prairie habitat and link it to the Border park. Other amenities will be add next to the prairie habitat as well, like schools, office buildings, affordable housings and other residence. A research facility will also be introduced to the site to study the prairie habitat in urban area. The whole site will become a vibrant community that serves both human and none-humans.

RECYCLE

USING WASTE AS A DRIVING FORCE TO REBOUND AN OLD INDUSTRIAL NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECT IN A GLANCE St. Louis, a representative example of the decaying of major American industrial cities after World War II. Mark-Twain I-70 industrial, starting to decline since the 1970s, is a typical area that faded with the city’s golden time. Currently, the surrounding community is largely unemployed for the closing of anchor institutions, and the waste and pollution created by remaining institutions are deteriorating the local environment. The project aims to re-flourish the neighborhood by reforming the structure of the industrial and the community. Waste is selected to be the main driving force of the transformation. The industrial structure will be re-built based on the loop of waste material that rotating inside the plant and collecting from the communities. A recycling lifestyle will also be established in the community by collecting waste raw materials for the industrial and food waste for community garden composting out of vacant lands. Apart from the goal of rebooting the local economy and cleaning up the neighborhood environment, the new area could serve as a sample for waste industry and business.

INSPIRATION

FROM ANCIENT PROJECT IN A GLANCE Located in the south of the commercial center and close to the subway and railway, the site has to be seen as an important part of the green space system along the subway. The problem this site facing is countless. First, there is not enough green space near the site, the space nearby is full of commercial buildings, which make the area boring and uncomfortable, and the micro environment in this place is dirty. Then, the buildings take too much space so the residents and students get no place to walk and relax, also the transportation system in this area is quiet disordered, there is not an open space outside the station. However, the site also has quiet potential to develop, the great number of international students who live in the area bring a complicated but lively cultural environment to the site. Base on all this, the site can be a good point to show the ancient Chinese culture to different people while provide a comfortable and vivid scenery.

SPONGE A POROUS PUBLIC SPACE DESIGN

PROJECT IN A GLANCE Located beside the innermost gulf of the Yellow Sea, Qinhuangdao is one of the most important port city in northeastern China. The history of the city can be dated back to 2000 years ago, the rich culture has always been a pride for the people in Qinhuangdao. The design site located in the intersection of Heping St and Hongqi Road, just beside the old railroad. As one of the busiest area in the city, the water-logging problems along the street and under the railroad bridge has caused many troubles for both vehicles and residence. Our design is to created a porous public space to collect and purify the rainwater and stormwater to prevent the urban water-logging and provide a vibrant community space at the same time. Besides managing the stormwater, the site is also designed to work as an important public space for the neighborhood. The site design is inspired by the origin of Qinhuangdao, the central water feature is an abstract structure to show that the name of Qinhuangdao first came from a rock island in the sea, so the huge rock in the center of the retention basin is designed to memorized this history. The design also provides many sitting area for the residence to relax and a plaza for people to gather and enjoy their lives together. The concept is to created a place can serve the neighborhood and work as an infrastructure to deal with rain water at the same time. Though the site is small, it still can make a huge difference for the neighborhood, and can also be a module for other places.
