Something old & new
eek! Our fave e-tailer is now doing make-up
I’ve always hated the phrase ‘out with the old, in with the new’. It’s derogatory on so many levels – most of which are too important to go into in these 250 words. However, when it comes to style, I can take the saying with a pinch of salt. Of course, we all have older pieces in our wardrobes that are more sentimental; my favourite dress, for example, is a £45 Zara number I bought in 2013 that transports me from girly nights out to my honeymoon to last week’s bank holiday with every wear. But, much like how I imagine my friends with children feel about having their second, third, and even forth sprogs, there’s always room in my heart for more. So, I consider it Look’s obligation to show you new things that’ll become just as beloved as your existing wares. We’ve whittled down the very best of autumn collections hitting stores now (p8). From River Island’s new luxe edit and Primark’s premium offerings to the US brand making waves on Brit soil, you’re sure to find something that makes your heart skip a beat. These aren’t the only launches we’re losing our minds over: ASOS has some very exiting news to share with you on p18. ‘New’, however, isn’t just material: it can be a skill. We’ve reviewed the best beauty courses to up your make-up game significantly (p68). Or, if more money is your goal, I recommend taking a leaf out of a side hustler’s book (p42). After all, every new beginning – be it sartorial or otherwise – has to start somewhere…

Jen ‘I Just Want To Have Fun!’ We’re pleased to see J-Law again, but her friends are worried about the effect of a former flameÉ
his week, Jennifer Lawrence is returning to our consciousness after a hiatus of nearly a year. But we’re not implying the star’s been slacking. Oh no, the 27 year old has been working hard on several new flicks and spending time with new man, director Darren Aronovsky, 48. But while things seem to be settled as she makes her big comeback, with Jen waxing lyrical about how brilliant Darren is, we’re told she’s feeling torn over the relationship and her friendship with her ex, Nicholas Hoult. ‘Jennifer’s in two minds about what’s best for her,’ an insider tells Look, ‘and her continuing friendship with Nicholas is making her rethink things.’ Jen’s been dating Darren for the past year. The pair met on the set of her new film Mother!, where they were reported to have had ‘intense chemistry’ on set, with the director’s fearsome reputation as a ‘serious taskmaster’ playing a part. Last month the actress opened up about their relationship for the first time.
‘I had energy for [Darren]. I don’t know how he felt about me,’ she revealed. ‘For the past year, I’ve been dealing with him as just a human. I’ve been in relationships before where I am just confused. And I’m never confused with him.’ But while she’s broadcasting that, Jen’s recently been filming the latest X-Men film, Dark Phoenix, in Montreal, where she’s been hanging out with Nicholas again – the two were photographed with the cast having drinks. It’s the film series where they first met and, according to our sources, it’s making Jen re-think what she wants in life. ‘On the one hand, she loves Darren and wants to stay with him for the long-term, even though they’ve had some troubles recently. She’s never been a believer in looking back and says the relationship with Darren has been the most mature partnership she’s ever had,’ says one source. ‘But Nicholas was her best friend and they’ve been having so much fun, she’s wondering if she wants to be tied down to anyone right now.’ J-Law and Nicholas were an item between 2010 and 2014 after meeting on the set of the first X-Men, First Class. The pair were on and off for five years, with Jen revealing she

was lost when they split in 2014. ‘My life was this person and these movies and we broke up around the same time I wrapped [X-Men],’ said Jen. ‘It was this whole year of “Who am I without these movies? Who am I without this man?”’ Since then, despite a year-long liason with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Jennifer’s been open about Nick being in her life. The pair were seen laughing together at last year’s Golden Globes and when her phone was hacked as part of the 2014 scandal, with nude photos posted online, he was apparently very supportive. ‘With Nicholas she can let her hair down and be a little less uptight, more fun-loving and freespirited,’ says our insider. ‘That’s not to say Darren’s not that way, but Nicholas brings out her laidback personality in a big way.’ Her friends are said to be concerned, though. ‘They were there for her break-up and it was horrible for her,’ our insider continues. ‘But a lot of people believe they’re destined to wind up back together again.’ With more X-Men to come following Jen’s promotional tour with Mother!, we hope all goes smoothly for J-Law…

hen we spotted Drake posing in a pair of socks from Rihanna’s new collection on Insta, we knew something was up. Talk about trying to get Ri’s attention. So when Look heard that the rapper was back on the scene and in London at the same time as Ri last week, we weren’t surprised. Although Ri is reportedly loved-up with Hassan Jameel – and concentrating on her acting career – recent events have caused a major U-turn, and it seems Drake is at the centre. It can’t be easy for Rihanna. While Drake has reportedly been calling non-stop since her relationship with Hassan was made public, as Look reported at the time, Chris Brown has also reappeared on the scene, commenting on Ri’s Instagram snaps and speaking out about their relationship – again. Chris’ recent outbursts have understandably riled the star, but instead of turning to social media to let off steam, the singer has gone back to what she knows best – pouring her frustration into new music – and after the pair were spotted heading into a recording studio together, it seems Drake’s happy to get

t’s hard to imagine Meghan Markle having to plan anything. After all, a possible soon-to-be member of the royal family can hire someone to do that, right? But a week on from her and Prince Harry’s romantic getaway, the wedding of the year isn’t the only thing Megs is scheduling. According to our source, the actress is instigating an action plan for her and Hazza – and it’s said to be kicking off pretty soon. ‘Meghan has really thrown herself into what she’s calling a five-year plan,’ explains a close pal. ‘She knows they’re both exceptionally busy, but she wants everything between her and Harry to run smoothy. ‘Obviously, she’s hinted at wanting a family at some point, but she wants to just make sure their relationship is the focus for now.’ Earlier this year, 32-year-old Harry revealed he’d ‘love to have kids’, explaining he’s already godfather to a number of his friends’ children, as well as being uncle to keen to Prince pursue her humanitarian George – who starts aims over the school this next couple week – and of years. The 36 year old has spoken out several times about her passions. In an essay last year, Megs explained: ‘With fame comes opportunity, but in my opinion, it also includes responsibility – to advocate and share, to focus less on glass slippers and more on pushing through glass ceilings and, if I’m lucky enough, to inspire.’ We’re not sure what we’re more excited for: the wedding, mini-Megs or what these two might turn their hand to next…

Well, if you ask the entire Look office and Kendall Jenner, it’s a resounding ‘yes’…
he first thing we do when Kendall Jenner steps out in something fresh is find out where it’s from. Oh, to have the power to put on pretty much anything and make the rest of the world want it – that’s the Kendall Jenner effect. When she wears something more than once, however, things reach even dizzier heights, and that’s exactly what happened with Kurt Geiger’s ‘Strut’ boots. It’s important to get into a bedtime routine that helps you to wind down. ‘Move from a well-lit, warm room to a cool, dark one, switch off all technology and focus on non-stimulating activities such as reading,’ advises sports sleep coach Nick Littlehales. ‘Sleep with wool bedding as it absorbs higher levels of moisture than down and synthetic covers,’ says Chris Tattersall, MD of The Wool Room. This leads to better regulation of skin moisture levels and, yep you guessed it, a better night’s sleep. Naturally produced by the body mostly at night, melatonin is a hormone that helps you to drift off and can be found in supplements to aid the process. However, sleep expert Richard Tucker, managing director of Leesa Sleep, explains that you can also find it in foods. ‘Enjoy a banana or cherries in the evening to increase your levels,’ he says. ‘Calmness is vital to sleep,’ reveals Vicki Evans, founder of wellness brand Walkmill Botanics. De-clutter an area of your house, and make it the space where you just sit and meditate at bedtime. Ditch the caffeine as it has a stress-like effect on the body, raising levels of stress hormones such as adrenaline. ‘Switch to matcha tea instead,’ says nutritionist Cassandra Barns. ‘It still provides the morning boost, but also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that has relaxing and calming properties.’
This luxurious bath oil has come to the aid of some of the UK’s worst sleepers. Packed with a superblend of lavender, vetivert and camomile, it gently washes away stress and tension so that you feel relaxed and ready to clamber into bed.

elvet, in all its strokeable opulence, has been around for what feels like forever. It’s done the catwalk circuit, it’s completed its celeb course and finally cemented itself as one of the high street’s hottest trends. Up until now it’s typically been reserved for after hours; something you’d save for your GNO. That’s why, when we saw everywhere from Dorothy Perkins to Simply Be stocking velvet pieces we can wear from AM to PM, we could hardly contain ourselves. Pair with box-fresh sneaks and denim for the ultimate off-duty spin. The texture makes you feel a million dollars and now, with it’s casual overhaul, you can feel super-fly all day, e’ry day.

oys do it, perspective employers do it – heck, even cats do it: playing hard to get is something we’re all familiar with, but never has it been so evident as with fashion brands. Previously, any labels out of the UK were nigh on impossible to get your hands on but, thanks to the Internet, we literally have a world of brilliant buys at our fingertips. And now, we can finally get our mitts on the New York-based outfitter we’ve long coveted: Pixie Market. With over 100,000 followers on Instagram, the brand is a rising star in the fashionsphere and a bevy of influencers have given it a firm thumbs up. From on-point prints to serious silhouettes, every item is a must-have. Sure, you have to sacrifice the free next-day delivery that many of our homebred brands offer, but 5 for the exclusivity of owning a piece no one else is likely to have, we reckon the standard US shipping rate is worth the extra £££. A small price to pay for maximum #ootd likes.

ooking after your complexion can get complicated. Cleanse, tone, moisturise, serum, spritz... the list goes on. And while it’s great to create a bespoke routine, sometimes it’s good to just keep it simple. ‘Fifty per cent of people I see in my clinic have too complicated a regime that is actually damaging skin and unbalancing the natural acidic PH,’ says dermatologist Dr. Justine Hextall of The Harley Medical Group. ‘I see a lot of problem skin as a consequence of an over-zealous skincare regime.’ With that in mind, we’ve got the answer to a gentler way of keeping your skin tip-top…

rends change with the seasons. Usually, it’s to do with the temperature: winter comes with coats, summer comes with bikinis. And autumn? This year, it’s less about weather and more about blending in. Taking its cue from the catwalk, rust is officially the colour to be seen in. Rust as in the rich, vibrant tone that reflects against your skin to create the illusion of a tan. Rust as in the orange-brown hue the leaves turn as they too make their own sartorical transition. Follow the eco lead with Reiss’ faux fur stole, or try H&M’s satin skirt for a modern take on the look. It’s official: orange rust is the new black.

JOIN THE LIP cONTOur cLub Singular colour lip shades are apparently no longer enough, with new lippies combining two or more colours. We just had to try them – find out below if two or three is really better than one…
Dior Double Rouge Lipstick in Miss Crush, £20 Tester: Sarah-Rose Harrison, Look’s Senior Fashion Assistant Verdict:‘punchy and fun, this fuchsia shade and it’s ombre mix applied with ease, blending naturally and enhancing both the shape and size of my lips. i was impressed with it’s longlasting colour, too, which survived lunch and three peppermint teas! i can’t wait to try the other shades.’
Illamasqua Lava Lips in Rebirth, £20 Tester: Lucy Devine, Look’s Entertainment Writer Verdict: ‘i LOVE this colour. Strangely the shade slightly alters each time you use it, which keeps things interesting. i’m not usually one for bold lipsticks, but i adore this. it’s super easy to apply and i got heaps of compliments. Winner.’

Smashbox Be Legendary Triple Tone Lipstick in Berry, £17.50 Tester: Victoria Adeboyega, Look’s Senior Picture Editor Verdict:‘This is quite tricky to apply as you need to follow a complicated criss-cross technique, plus you need to press your lips together a few times to blend the shades, but the effect is cool and it’s definitely going on my instagram.’
Le Rouge Sculpt in 03 Sculpt’in Fushia , £28 Tester: Maxine Eggenberger, Look’s Acting Editor Verdict:‘The effect is seriously amazing, but as the lighter shade is at the bottom half of the lipstick, it’s awkward to apply it on your lower lip as you have to twist it and use it upside down. But even though it’s a little tricky to handle, i loved the subtle ombre vibes.’

Malaika FirTh inTerview We caught up with model Malaika Firth to talk the catwalk, relationships, and which A-list beauty she turns to for adviceÉ
Hi Malaika! What do you love about Ghost’s new fragrance? It’s very dreamy. I think it’s the kind of perfume that makes you feel empowered, and that’s how every woman should feel. What scents are nostalgic for you? Flowers. The scent takes me back to Kenya – just running around the fields at home. I moved from Kenya to London when I was seven, but I go to visit family every year. How do you prepare for the catwalk? I don’t usually prep, but if I do, I’ll pray beforehand. What goes through your mind during a show? Once I’m on the catwalk, I’m focused. My mind is solely on walking. What would you be doing if you hadn’t gone into Malaika has modelling? quickly become I’d be in acting a top model school. I could branch out into it, a lot of models do – that would be awesome. Tell us what happened when you were asked @lookmagazine
lookmag
to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show... I was so ecstatic. The first thing I did was tell my mum, I was like: ‘I’m finally going to be in the Victoria’s Secret Show and walking among all the incredible models!’ It was such an amazing feeling. What do you think has been your biggest struggle in the industry? Making friends. Obviously, it’s easy to make friends when you’re in the shows together and castings, but to meet up is difficult. One minute they’re here, one minute they’re there and in different destinations.
Em powe red is how every woman s h o u l d fe e l You can’t really make close relationships in the industry. If you can, that’s awesome. But it’s not like you’re in an office and you see them every day. Which model has given you the best advice? Jourdan Dunn. She messaged me when I first started out, saying: ‘You’re going to be great, just be confident.’ You’re a huge role model, do lots of girls contact you for advice on how to get into modelling? They do, but there’s only so much advice I can give them. They have to work hard and approach the agencies, they have to really want it. The main thing to remember is just to be yourself – [the industry] loves personalities. You’re quite a religious person. Does that influence your modelling at all?
lookmagazineuk
@lookmagazine
Yes, of course. Religion is a very big part of my life. I don’t do nudes. The fashion industry seems like it’s becoming more diverse. What do you think? I feel like it’s become very diverse, I see lots of black and mixed-race girls on the catwalk now, which is amazing, and with their natural hair. What do you do to relax? I’ll go to a spa, chill at home or watch some Netflix – I’ve just finished watching Lovesick. Would you ever consider having plastic surgery for your career? No. I believe in true beauty – you should just let it shine. What are your fave fashion brands? Topshop, H&M, Missguided – I shop a lot of high street. I’ve just bought some bits from the Jourdan Dunn collection at Missguided. Can you share a make-up artist tip? Definitely to contour upwards and to dab concealer, don’t rub. What products do you use? I use Bobbi Brown foundation, Maybelline concealer, and Ruby Woo red lipstick from MAC, or I like the Kylie Jenner lipsticks at the moment. I use a Charlotte Tilbury cleanser for taking my make-up off. If I’m not wearing make-up, I’ll just pinch my cheeks for a little extra colour, or use Bobbi Brown’s bronzer stick. What’s been your career highlight? Working for Burberry. I was with them every day, doing the shows. They treated me like family. Ghost Dream (£27 for 30ml) is available now at all major fragrance retailers

here’s two things sitting between Look and Malaika Firth. One: a life-sized bottle of the new Ghost fragrance, Dream. The other? A Subway sandwich. Malaika is a big fan of both. Sitting cross-legged, the 23-yearold Kenyan-born model is so down to earth. Fierce, intelligent – and hilarious – it’s no surprise she’s such a success. After being hired by Premier modelling agency (on the spot) aged 17, Malaika was destined for fame, with ASOS, H&M and Burberry all wanting a taste of The Next Big Thing. Then, in 2013, she made her Victoria’s Secret Show debut, which catapulted her even further into the model sphere. Malaika’s personable, smart and has a lot of honest advice for wannabe models, which is quite refreshing, TBH...

hen you’re struggling to balance one job, make it to the gym in the morning, socialise a couple of times a week and still have time to watch Made In Chelsea, it’s hard to imagine how anyone can juggle two, let alone three jobs. But, prepare to be inspired. Say hello to the side hustlers: the women who are not only maintaining more than three different careers (many of which are their own businesses), they’re also squeezing in workouts, looking after their families and having time to see mates, travel and get some well-deserved R&R. Oh, and did we mention they’re absolutely raking it in? With more than a third of working Brits having two or more jobs* (and women being more likely to do so than men**) are multiple jobs becoming the new norm?

multiple jobS:
What the experts think ‘Multiple jobs and mixed-mode working (aka employed and self-employed) can be a great way to investigate alternative careers,’ explains John Lees, careers expert and author of How To Get A Job You Love.‘The key is working out your careers story as a whole and identifying your skills. By having multiple jobs, you’re far less at the whim of a single organisation or any sudden changes in the economy. Learn how to talk about what you do, explaining your distinctive work mix, and keep seeking out people who can help you extend your contacts into the future.’

‘i earn £250k, but it’s not about the money’ Caroyln Radford: Lawyer, entrepreneur and CEO of Mansfield Town FC ‘At 29, I became CEO at Mansfield Town, making me the youngest CEO in the country. I’m director of One Call Insurance, one of the country’s largest insurance brokers, and a director of OCL solicitors. I started my own salon, Beauty at Doncaster, four years ago, and in 2012 I founded The Radford Foundation, which helps create a safer and stronger community for the people of Mansfield. Every day I get up at 6am and have breakfast with my husband and our three young children, then I go to the gym, and get to the office at 9am. I spend my mornings at Mansfield Town, then drive to Doncaster where my other businesses are based. The biggest challenge is wearing so many different hats. For example, dealing
with young, primarily male le footballers is very different to working as a lawyer of leading a team of ladies at the salon. Then I come home and I’m a mum! I’ve had to learn to compartmentalise each aspect of my life. If you can’t take time for bath and bedtime with your kids, your work-life balance is off. Now, age 35, my income is in the region of £250k a year. But it’s not about the money – I truly enjoy what I do.’

Nimisha Brahmbhatt: entrepreneur, coach and strategist fashion brand, Amanika, as well as founder of Amanika Consulting, and I’m a coach and strategist for creative entrepreneurs. A huge plus point to having different ventures ‘Growing up, I was taught to is building a wide-range of build skills rather than chase skills, you can engage with a single career. WorkWear The summer party may almost be over, but we're not fussed. Now's the time to knuckle down and kick off the new season with a hard-working attitude. and what better way to celebrate than with a whole new work 'drobe?
Summing up day-to-day life, Zara has nailed it with these traffic-light suits. Power dressing at its finest, there’s no shying away in these look-at-me hues. Warning: avoid resembling an M&M by adhering to the following style guide:
D o : Keep it simple – team with sleek separates like a grey T-shirt or crisp white shirt. D o n ’ t : Dabble with print; block colour’s where it’s at. D o : Add staple jewels – mini hoop earrings and gold cuff bracelets should do the trick. D o n ’ t : Listen to anyone that doesn’t 100 per cent appreciate your new Zara purchase.

That ‘back to school’ feeling is here again (seriously, why is the sun disappearing?) so here’s how to handle winter approaching…
1
BOOK A HOLIDAY The best way to beat holiday blues? Book another, obvs. According to Stephen Ferrando, director of psychiatry at Westchester Medical Center in New York, we often feel a sense of anxiety for not having ‘made the most’ of summer. Sound familiar? Try booking a winter getaway. A recent study revealed that 72 per cent of us feel a ‘high’ when booking travel.

DE-CLUTTER Apart from making space for new season essentials (have you seen Zara’s New In?) de-cluttering your wardrobe could reduce stress. According to the professionals, de-cluttering ahead of a new season helps us feel ‘clear-headed’. Plus, it’s a good idea to make your home nicer, as without the good weather, you’ll be staying in more.
3

CombatYour Food
Cravings
Ever wondered why you get those pesky mid-afternoon food cravings and end up dashing to the coffee cart for a sweet treat? Well, according to nutritional expert Toral Shah, this can be your body’s way of telling you that you might be lacking in valuable nutrients. Like when Mother Nature comes knocking, your body needs more iron, so craving a juicy steak meal is, in fact, pretty normal. The same goes for those chocolate cravings, which can be a sign you’re lacking
in magnesium, meaning it’s time to up your fruit and vegetable intake. Not sure what your body’s telling you? Here’s some tips: • Running low on energy and craving sugar? Opt for sliced apples or berries in a pot of Greek yogurt for a boost. • Fancy a cheesy margarita pizza? This could mean you need more calcium, so eat chia seeds and nuts high in omega-3 fatty acids. • Craving a pasta dinner? Give white carbs a miss and tuck into legumes like chickpeas.

VACAY THE A-LIST WAY!
Can you do luxe for less on the party island? It’s a tough ask, but Look’s Giselle had a go…
WORDS: GiSelle WainWRiGht. phOtOS: alamy, Getty imaGeS
STAY Choosing your area is key in Ibiza. Wild beachfront and noise? San Antonio. Laid-back family vibes? Figueretas. Cool, chilled with optional partying? Ibiza Old Town – our area of choice. It’s a 10-minute taxi from the major clubs (approx £8 per journey), a 20-minute walk from the stylish Old Town Harbour and a fourminute walk to a relatively quiet beach – great for post-clubbing hangovers. There are several last-minute budget hotels to recommend – Playasol hotels are all over the island (from £90 per night, playasolibizahotels.com) or a popular party place is Club San Remo in San Antonio (from £68pn, sanremohotelibiza.com).
.co.uk
@lookmagazine
EAT Dine out for less by making the most of set menus and walk two streets back from every promenade. Tapas bars line the Old Town’s main promenade, where you can dine for around £15 per person. One way to save money in the long run is to splash out on dinner at Pacha’s restaurant, dodging the entry fee, which can be around £73. SEE The sunset is something everyone raves about, but once you’ve seen it, you will understand why. Café Mambo hosts DJs and is the perfect place to take it in over cocktails, but you can head down to the rocks with your own drinks. lookmag
lookmagazineuk
A quick pre-club cocktail or two...
Otherwise, we recommend taking the ferry from Old Town over to the ridiculously idyllic Formentera island. Just 40 minutes will take you to white beaches Ibiza sunsets are legendary – with and clear waters, good reason which make for the most Instagrammable, envy-inducing shots. It costs around £22 for a day return – check the timetables because you want to hit the island before 12pm to bag the best sunbathing spot! @lookmagazine

FILM
Jane soon realises there’s more to Cory than she first thought. Filled with twists and turns (and it’s pretty eerie, too), we can guarantee you’ll be on the edge of your seat. Who’s in it? Elizabeth Olsen stars as Jane Banner, opposite Jeremy Renner as Cory Lambert. Teen Wolf’s Kelsey Asbille plays Natalie, and Twilight’s Julia Jones is Wilma, Cory’s ex. Why should I care? A crime thriller not to be missed, the film is written and directed by Taylor Sheridan (who also masterminded Hell Or High Water and Sicario). Out 8 September Verdict: ★ ★ ★ ★ lookmag

Chanel fragrances are timeless, classic and, of course, very at home on our dressing tables (nothing like a flatlay with Chanel, right?) so the launch of gabrielle Chanel (eDP, £79 for 50ml), the first original in 15 years, is more than a little exciting. this is hitting the top of our Christmas list for sure.
Snapped Burberry has revealed it’s hosting a huge new exhibition of photography which ‘explores British life’ to celebrate its aW17 collection. Curated by Christopher Bailey, the brand is also hosting workshops soon. 18 Sep-1 October, Old Sessions House, London EC1, Free entry
