What do you love best about print magazines? “I’m old school. I love feeling paper when I read, and print magazines allow me to get a better experience of what I see and read versus reading it online. SEPTEMBER 2017
M
Y LOVE AFFAIR
with the Big Apple began not in its boroughs, but in books. The image in my mind was E.B. White’s classic love letter to the city “Here is New York” that begins with “On any person who desires such queer prizes, New York will bestow the gift of loneliness and the gift of privacy,” or Truman Capote’s bittersweet account of Miss Holly Golightly heroic journey in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s jazzy story of class and ambition, The Great Gatsby. That image of Manhattan in my mind, shaped by Edith Wharton and Jack Kerouac and Henry James, was reinforced when I first step foot in the city, and like what Sex and the City and Gossip Girl might want us to believe, it’s a city that opens you up to opportunities you might never have thought possible. This is the spirit that we wanted to capture again in the September issue—our most exciting release. Much importance is placed on it because it sets the mood for the rest of the year, and for the following months as well. Here you’ll first see how the Fall/Winter trends hint at the direction of what’s next—from 2016’s minimalism, to this 2017’s overt maximalism, and, if we are to believe what we’ve been seeing across all runways, next year’s return to pretty. What better companion to take on a brand new adventure than newly single girl Erich Gonzales? Though this isn’t her first time in the NYC, her previous trips never gave her the chance to explore and enjoy what the city has to offer. Plus, she’s currently at that point in her life where she’s raring to transform herself, and New York is just the place where someone can find herself and form her Erich 2.0. In this issue we went all out—from gorgeous offerings in Shops that cover travel essentials (you wouldn’t get to NYC without making taking that 16-hour Philippine Airlines flight), to some of the coolest Western
trends like cowboy, denim on denim, gym classic gal (a modern iteration of Jane Fonda), or the rebel dressing that’s a cross between punk and the disco goodness at CBGBs and Studio 54. With the city weighing heavily in our minds, we talked to Josie Natori, one of the NYC design originals who founded her company in 1966 and paved the way not just for Filipinos but other designers as well to set up shop here. Her story is a great counterpoint to another Filipino legend, Bench, who gave us a front seat to its New York Men’s Fashion Week show. Further reinforcing the American mood is our 4th of July special, and our eyewear and international collections editorial which was photographed by Seven Barretto downtown. We also caught up with Metro’s former EIC and current editor-at-large Sarah Meier in her new Brooklyn ’hood, who then shared her beautiful new life in the city she now calls home. This issue is also full of exclusives—from the Uniqlo lifewear collection launched in NYC a while back, to Tory Burch chic, and Jimmy Choo Insta stars in the Maldives. A personal favorite is my one-on-one with Estée Lauder’s granddaughter Aerin, whom I chatted with in her design atelier in Manhattan. I now have a new woman crush! Since it’s September, we’ve got our favorite Fall/Winter ’17 trend report, lovingly created METRO

with some of the craziest trends we’ve seen, and the most covetworthy accessories as well, along with beauty trends you’ve got to try: Mod, stained lips, and ultra short hair styles. Speaking of beauty, we’ve been thinking about rain (a lot), so our rain-friendly looks take centerstage, from waterproof makeup to bed hair, we’ll give you the right kind of pizzaz to transition your look to this new season. We’ve also got really cool beauty tips from Gwen Stefani, and our exclusive feature on RB Chanco and her muse, Binibining Pilipinas Universe Rachel Peters, who showed us how to be #RBeautified. Maureen Wroblewitz, known as The Girl Who Threatens the Competition, emerges as one of our first digital covers for Metro. This unassuming woman is on her way to London to kickstart her career under Storm Model Management, and we beam with pride at how far she has come. Another digital cover links to our ode to the Professional Models Association of the Philippines or PMAP, who is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month. Metro honors their invaluable contribution to fashion. Speaking of contribution to fashion, I’m very sad to announce that this issue marks the last of Creative Director Eldzs Mejia—former fashion designer and stylist-turned-creative director and educator, and now, retail creative director. I’ll let him announce where he’s headed (if he hasn’t already). We’ll surely miss him in our shoots, but we wish him all the best in his next endeavor. So here you have it, an issue packed with so much love for New York City and fashion that it’s exploding at the seams. See you next month!

RUNWAY TO REAL
CITY SLICKER
Stomp down city streets in style. We’ve reupdated the Americana style with pieces you’ve come to love: Cowgirl boots, double denim, and more BY GELIE MANANSALA
STRAIGHT OFF THE RUNWAY
You’re allowed one quintessential cowgirl piece: Accessorize with an oversized hat to stay true to the trend.
Who would have thought that a cowgirl hat and a hoodie would look this cool? This look from Ashley Williams is definitely on our radar. We love this unexpected (albeit literal) mix of silk and a cow print in this Bally ensemble. And Coach is seriously giving us a modern day cowgirl vibe with their collection!
A thick buckle belt is a Western vibe musthave if you want to keep it subtle but noticeable.

Cowgirls, giddy up! Nothing says Americana more than a Westerninspired trend. Choosing one or two country style pieces is the key to take this trend from the runways to your wardrobe. Think more Sienna Miller, less cowgirl, though, when styling yourself. From staples like cowboy hat, boots, fringed jackets, and leather skirts, we’re sure to see more of this trend on the streets, soon. METRO

Trend: Denim on Denim
Pairing up denim with denim used to be a fashion faux pas. This American workforce look gave rise to Rosie the Riveter, a feminist icon-turned-fashion icon. It may be risky but times have changed and now celebrities like Gigi Hadid, Jessica Alba, and Rihanna are rocking it like a pro. However, there’s still a fine line between looking chic and overwhelming. Just make sure you got the right pairing of washes and hues right! METRO

GYM CLASS GLAM Trend: Varsity Stripes
Even if you can’t remember the last time you sat in a classroom, it’s about time we discuss the recurring varsity trend. Reminiscent of American sports uniforms and cheerleader costumes, rock it with one or two contrasting stripes on a garment. Case in point: The letterman jacket. It is no wonder why some of our favorite shows use this trend to establish authority or a cool kid status. What’s new, though? This trend gets a sophisticated makeover but still remains true to its sporty appeal in an understated way. METRO

INFAMOUS REBELS Trend: Leather Biker Jacket
Get rebelliously stylish with this classic wardrobe staple. The leather jacket has been a fashion ‘it’ girl’s go-to come this new season. Hollywood’s obsession for the tough-guy jacket trend dates back to the ’50s when Rebel Without a Cause heartthrob James Dean linked this trend to the bad boy image. THE TORY GIRL GANG Which sartorial clique do you belong to? The Tory Burch F/W ’17 collection won’t leave you feeling all left out this season, for sure BY RANDZ MANUCOM
T
ORY BURCH.
Yes, we think we know everything about the fashion designer and her namesake label until now. The brand’s Fall/Winter ’17 offering is one of the most varied collections she’s ever released and the one that strikes closest to home, quite literally. “We found inspiration in the fearlessness and irreverence of Katharine Hepburn’s character in The Philadelphia Story,” says Tory referencing the city as her hometown. But it is not just in the personal familiarity of the pieces that makes it a standout collection; it is the assortment of looks, widely varied enough to tap into even the most specific of style cliques. Tory explores her home city as manifested in the fusion of outdoor glamour and confident femininity, something recognizably Philly. And somewhere between old-school checks and a warm palette of camel, rust, and grassland greens, there’s a clear indication on how the women she is designing for are as varied as the looks she has created. Is it a sense of belonging she’s trying to mimic? Hinting on nostalgia, perhaps? No one’s quite sure but these girl cliques she’s presented are equal parts relevant and chic.
THE CREATIVES
Dressing up, in a way, can be artistic. As per Tory Burch’s suggestion, these whimsical ballerina prints by Edward Degas from The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia are a good start. The uniform print on creamy, languid silk is both zoomed in or spread out on robe dresses and loose tops, which come with a matching necktie.
THE PURISTS
The minimalists at heart rejoice with pure, winter whites—clean, luxe pieces with fur and shearling fabrications. The updated trick, though, is wearing them head-to-toe, and with heavy seasonal layering. If you were to inject a color, let it be gold. In buttons, in the embroidery, or accoutrements, it’s the only color to add to make even the most traditional say yes!
Must-Have Item: Unstructured Briefcase
The first stanza of the poem “Ithaka” is printed on it, an homage to Tory’s family history.
Must-Have Item: Chunky Heels METRO
30
SEPTEMBER 2017
FEATURE THE PREPSTERS Geeks are now mainstream, looking chic while they’re at it! The updated twist is in the mix of feminine and masculine elements. Nothing signals menswear better than trousers with a slight slouch but with a redefined fit. Of course, don’t forget to switch out the tie with a nice bow or perhaps have a matching waistcoat to your jacket. Houndstooth and tartan instantly uplift the preppy look in a flash.
PATTERN PLAY
Whatever pattern angst you have, take it out on your bag!
Must Have Item: A Matching Printed Satchel
THE LAVISH GIRLS
Opulence is the watchword for these gals and nothing spells just that but cobalt blue dresses in plush velvet. What furthers the looks is the gold foil Chinoiserie print, finely attached to the velvet in all its metallic glory. The new season update? Add more gold accessories to electrify your looks. Must-Have Item: Gold and Ruby Earrings
VELVET VS SUEDE
Keep the accessories to a minimum. Even a statement pair of earrings will do.
All eyes are on the floor. Overindulge with velvet bows or go for more toughgirl-chic with suede.
THE QUEENLY Being regal isn’t just a state of mind but also a sartorial statement. Tory Burch’s propositions are long-sleeved gowns and tunic dresses in black, all adorned in patterns made of buttons. The proportions are the big news: Semi-flared sleeves, shirts in one size up, and an extended evening jacket. Tie around a velvet ponytail or lug around a black royal carryall, that’s how to elevate these pieces. Must-Have Item: Gold Multi-Rings and Pendant METRO

A book, denim shorts, vintage tshirts, a good pair of sunnies (I like rounded shapes), summer hat, a flowy dress or top you can throw on over swimsuits, sunscreen, sandals (something easy to slip in and out of ), swimsuits (lots of them), facemasks. Tropical dressing 101: For shoes—summer slides, lace-up sandals—are always what I like to look for. For bags, I like basket-types, woven, raffia— something light and not too delicate. For outfits, light colors, bohemian blouses (I love Vita Kin), and I like sunglasses with lighter colored lenses. Style icons and inspirations? I like to find my styling inspirations from books, photos, magazines from different eras. I’ve been really into looking back at the ’60s and ’70s. Best Maldives memory? The entire experience was incredible, I’ve never been to a place with such clear blue [waters] and so many sea creatures right outside the villa. Most importantly, I got to celebrate my birthday this year in the Maldives!
T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers are the only things I need when I globetrot. If I go to some places where the weather is cold, I’ll pack one more leather jacket.

Play with layers instead of over packing unnecessary clothes. Spend time organizing, you will find a lot of wasted space if you pack [at] the last minute.
PACKING TIP:
I always have my outfits sealed in zip lock bags, so I know exactly where everything is and it also saves space. I also find that it’s easier if you already have the necessities--say electronics or skincare--already in big zip lock bags, so you can just grab and go.

H, JEWELRY! Even with diamonds or not, they usually end up on a woman’s BFF list. As something that is usually very personal, every woman has specific quirks when it comes to picking out a piece to add to her collection. Whether it’s because of sentimental value or a certain affinity to a type of stone, metal, or finish, the fact remains true—jewelry is like an extension of a woman—you can pretty much tell a lot by what or how many she likes to wear. This season, Pandora continues to take pride in being one of the world’s leading brands that knows a woman’s wants and needs when it comes to personal jewelry. Known for their many wonderful charms, Pandora continues to evolve their design aesthetic not just with the aforementioned, but in other lines as well, such as rings, necklaces, and earrings. Currently, they take inspiration in a woman and all that she loves to do. We all wear many hats as we go about our days—partly a career woman, a mother, a friend, a girlfriend, a dreamer, and everything else in between. With this, the brand encourages us to celebrate all that we do, by way of inspiring us to follow our bliss, do all things with love, show off who we are by what we wear, and be wonderful while we’re at it! Sounds pretty good to us! Here, we let you in on our top picks for the season, and hopefully, you find one (or five!) that tickles your fancy as well!

SHE MEANS BUSINESS
B
EFORE WE EVEN BEGIN,
Josie Natori greets me with an approving smile. Her namesake brand, the Natori Company, had just turned 40 years old, and with it came a fanfare of press and fashion shows held in her honor. But it is not the attention, nor the glamorous treatment that had her impressed at the end of the day, as she obliges her admiring guests one-by-one in her office. She offers me a seat in the plush sofa right next
to her, and happily quips, “So nice to see all these women in the business, right?” By “business,” of course, Josie means fashion, or as she dotingly coins it as “the rag trade.” Fashion can be many things to different people; but make no mistake, for Josie it is above all an entrepreneurial conquest. After all, the business was the ultimate feminine liberation, an idea instilled into her lifeblood by a matriarchal grandmother. “In my mind, women work,” she says, her voice firm as her hand pounds the cushioned seat. “There was never a question in my mind METRO

that I would go into business.” Although the Natori Company was officially founded in New York in 1977, one would argue that its precursor dates back to Josie’s grandmother, who managed multiple enterprises daily from her home in Naga City. Yet, Josie emphasizes, she would always be the feminine figure, clad in a long floral dress, handkerchief in hand and radiating perfume as she worked away from the crack of dawn to the stillness of midnight. She was the epitome of the Filipina, tireless and uncompromising in beauty; and through Josie, her influence carried

through across continents, becoming a quintessential figure in the Natori Company lore. “I think one of my biggest assets is being a woman,” she remarks, her spine subtly arching with pride. “Second is coming from [the Philippines].” When she was just 17 years old, Josie moved to New York; it was 1964, the year of the New York World’s Fair, she vividly recalls, a then climactic event that marked the exciting and tumultuous age for the designer. In the world of fashion, it was the decade that oversaw some of the biggest shifts in consumer tastes. The “youthquake” movement was in full swing, as American fashion shifted its fixation from European trends to youth culture. The rise of ready-to-wear fashion, a model quickly overthrowing the dominance of couture, also meant that the New York garment industry was booming on Seventh Avenue, just a stone’s throw away from the department stores that clustered on Fifth Avenue. All this was happening as a young Josie arrived, for the first time, in New York. It is worth asking, was she then aware of this radical but inevitable metamorphosis in the fashion scene? “No, just the shops—just shopping!” Josie says nonchalantly; her amusement a telling
glimpse into the past life of a girl, who does not look into the grand scheme of things yet, but in the allure of the moment. Back then, Josie was still a diligent economics student, finding her way into the corporate landscape, and an unhinged shopaholic. “I would buy dozens of shoes! I was nuts!” Josie laughs, recounting her favorite stores by name. Imagine being an adolescent in a whole new country, and seeing the avenues filled with American and European finds. “There were wonderful brands and paraphernalia, contemporary lines, and I would get these shoes. “So many department stores then, most of which have disappeared,” she says, her voice still bearing the hint of girlish excitement, and nostalgia. To some extent, the world of department stores will always hold a sentimental value to Josie. After all, it is this bustling, eclectic establishment that whisked her away from the “boredom” of being the first female Vice President of investment banking at Merrill Lynch. It all started with one embroidered, cotton blouse from the Philippines, which she presented to a buyer in Bloomingdale’s. Nothing too fancy, remarks Josie, but it was unique to the lingerie market; and with a

DESIGNER FOCUS growing appetite for the ethnic flair, that humble Philippine shirt was suddenly a niche trend. By April of 1977, she would receive her first order for nightshirts: 1,000 pieces to be sold at the department stores. And so, the Natori company came to be. Four decades later, Josie’s lingerie business expanded into the lifestyle powerhouse it is today, with products ranging from fashion and accessories, to home furnishings. Although she’s not one to rub in her success, her one tease stems from an awareness of her legacy, “I was the grandmother of all these Asian-American [designers], you know,” she says. As far as Asian-American fashion brands go, the Natori company was one of the very first. She established her company just after Cathy Hardwick, the Korean-American designer who hired a young Tom Ford, set up her New York maison; while Vera Wang had only set up her bridal business a decade after the Natori Company was founded. Seeing Josie now, sprightly and determined after all these years, one would dare to ask, will she ever tire of fashion the same way she grew bored of Wall Street? “It’s not possible to be bored [in fashion],” she answers. “Because it’s constantly moving, constantly thwarting you—challenging you. No way, how could you be bored?” “[Fashion] feeds the artistic side of me, and at the same time the business side of me. Because at the end, that’s what drives me, when you can build a business,” explains Josie, mulling over the reasons why she stuck to it all these years, and why she will keep pushing the Natori Company. “As I keep saying, the best is yet to come for the brand.” Josie Natori RTW, Natori, and Natori RTW are available at Rustan’s Makati and Rustan’s Shangri-La. Industria, a barebones space in the West Village, where an assortment of the city’s models are filing in. Gone are the infamous headdresses and bejeweled corsets of Bench Body fashion show history. Nowhere in sight are the Philippine television icons that beam from their EDSA billboards. New York-based Brent Chua, who is responsible for photographing both the lookbook as well as taking lead on casting, has herded together an entirely different set of characters. Bench’s in-house creative stalwart Noel Manapat shares: “In the Philippines what you’ll usually see are the alpha males—muscular, jocks—but here what you’re seeing is a congregation of people, say, in a surf competition or in a music festival. So you’ll see lanky boys, you’ll see the skinny types, you’ll see tattooed guys, and of course, the well-built guys. It’s a more diverse kind of cast, and that’s what makes it different from how we present in the Philippines.” But that’s about the extent of the difference. When it comes to market positioning “It’s going to be the same,” Ben Chan explains. “We’re not going to raise the prices, but in terms of the concept, we have to adapt to the U.S.” This becomes apparent in the styling of the show, where a very progressive and elevated interpretation of the garments evolves. This often means less is more. Accent pieces are understated and minimalist, a blank slate to showcase the signature tropical printed underwear, full of fun, bright and bold in color, true to the “Forever Summer” movement that has become synonymous with the Bench brand. This is how the team pays homage to our island flavor as it explores gaining a foothold on different shores. This foothold, according to Ben, will not be in the form of brick and mortar stores. With an agent in Los Angeles facilitating Bench Body’s exposure on e-commerce, coupled with the now annual New York showing, clients across the U.S. are latching METRO

onto the product and carrying it online. Add this to Bench’s existing Japanese market and the other Asian territories where the brand is available, and things are certainly looking exciting. And still, this success is celebrated quietly, humbly. Ben’s smile is shy as he shares the advances they are making, but you can see childlike pride and excitement twinkling in his eyes. It is here that the realization surfaces: This juggernaut of a businessman, thirty years deep into his retail experience, still feels what every startup entrepreneur does. “It’s been something at the top of my mind but I didn’t have the courage to do it,” Chan says about the foray into New York. “But finally, after being encouraged by friends, and Ariel (Lozada, renowned international Filipino fashion director), and all the people here…let’s give it a try.” The “try” was a resounding success. Seeing something so thoroughly homegrown, so linked to the everyday Pinoy, hitting all the right notes in one of the most discerning fashion markets and cosmopolitan cities on the globe, is a truly thrilling experience. “There’s always a way if you want it. Even for Bench, it was a leap of faith. We don’t have a store in New York, so even this was a brave act for Ben to do. I think if you believe in the potential of something, you can grow it somewhere—you just have to pursue it and find other ways,” says Noel, when asked for his advice to creatives trying to break out overseas. “You can find an opportunity if you have the drive, the talent. And of course you also have to have the business know-how, because it can’t just be all spectacle. You have to back it up with deliverable products and products that will function well for your market.” It may have been a leap of faith for Ben Chan and the Bench Body team, but happily reporting to you from New York, that they have firmly landed on this side of the world, once again raising the ante for Filipino fashion to keep reaching further.

PUCKER UP TREND: STAINED LIPS On-fleek, drawn-out lips may take a backseat this season, as stained, messy, overly glossy red and hot pink executions is where it’s at. Now can be the time to ditch the lip liner and just go for a careless swipe of your favorite red tube, or dab with your fingertips for that undone finish. We love the picture-perfect versions at Giambattista Valli and Rosie Assoulin, as well as the achievable version at Public School—all set to be our go-to look for the season.

The quest for the fountain of youth may never end, as this season calls for freshness and vitality with subtle hints of blush, little to no eyeshadow, flawless skin, and glossy lips. The Lemaire and Roksanda runways showcased such juvenile beauty with models that looked not a day over 16, while Mary Katrantzou and Marchesa showed pastel hues on the eyes and on the cheeks reminiscent of one’s first dressy affair.

There’s something mysterious about a girl who decides to line her entire eye with classic black liner. Mysterious in the sense that she’s totally fine with smudging and messiness, and still manages to look trés chic! Go the mysterious girl route by taking cue from the Marni, Chloé, and R13 runways where basic black eyeliner and a bit of mascara is all it takes to get you on the “I’m a cool girl” boat. Nail art may never go out of style, with diversely different executions seen all over the Fall/Winter 2017 runways. Whether it’s geometric, animalprint, embellished, or just accentuated with striking lines, we’re all for it. Shows at Tadashi Shoji did a mixed metallic look, while the Blonds went for a reptile-print rendition. We saw geometric patterns which are pretty easy to achieve at Jenny Packham and Monse, while Libertine went the Indian route in embellishments galore. We’re partial to stick-ons, for the rest of us who can’t get a decent pattern done on our nails, though.

LET LIFE’S COLORS LIGHT UP YOUR HAIR—WITHOUT ANY OF THE DAMAGE If you thought that when it comes to stunning hair color, something’s always got to give—dry, brittle strands, or irritation just can’t be avoided—this innovative product will prove you wrong. by Kat Angco
H
ow many times have you wanted to color your hair but didn’t because you know you’ve already subjected it to much damage? Or perhaps you went ahead with coloring your hair, setting aside your qualms (but fingers crossed all throughout), all in the name of a vibrant ‘do? Maybe you’re a coloring virgin and never really had the guts to take the plunge because you’d much rather preserve your crowning glory’s natural fine texture than get color, and the dryness that comes with it? Here’s what’s for sure: You’re missing out on quite a lot if you let damage keep you from enjoying the joy hair coloring brings—especially now that there’s a product that will help you get intense, lush color on your locks without the dryness and irritation. Meet Swiss innovation Lively, specially formulated without ammonia, parabens, and PPD (Paraphenylenediamine), providing delicate coloring even to sensitive skin. You get natural-looking brightness from their 50 brilliant shades that run the whole spectrum: From black to copper, to blonde, to violet red. Oh, did we mention it also provides perfect coverage of white hair and can also lighten up to four levels? Double yes! Even better, Lively is enriched with sweet almond oil and lotus flower, known for their soothing, softening, moisturizing, and invigorating properties so it doesn’t just protect your hair and scalp from dryness and allergic reactions, but also deeply nourishes them. Lively hydrates and improves your hair’s elasticity, rebalances the ph levels of your scalp, and combats free radicals and remineralizes, too. that’s hitting two birds with one stone at its finest— gleaming color and wonderful nourishment can go hand in hand, indeed. Life’s too short not to change that hair color of yours. No matter how conservative you are, switching things up in the hue department of your crowning glory can do wonders to how you look. Let life surprise you with its many fabulous hues—on your hair, that is. And now you can do so without any worry because Lively has got your back! Choose healthy color, choose Lively.
THIS IS HOW YOU REALLY PROTECT YOUR HAIR FROM CHEMICAL DAMAGE With Eslabondexx, you’ll never go on breaking your hair ever again— even if you tried so hard.

act: It’s nearly impossible to save your hair from the damage that comes from chemical treatments—you know, those you love so much because they help you achieve celebrity-levels of hair. From perming, to straightening, to hair coloring, they’re all a lot of fun to try because they level up your look. Unfortunately, though, undergoing these treatments can also level up the damage on your hair. Even your favorite celebrities are not spared from hair damage; they spend tons of time and money to make sure their locks are rejuvenated after chemical and heat styling, bleaching, and coloring. The good news is, saving your hair from further damage is not totally impossible, thanks to Swiss innovation Eslabondexx, from the makers of Nouvelle and Lively Colors. Used in combination with any chemical hair treatment, this breakthrough product prevents damage before it can even start, preserving and protecting the hair structure while the chemical treatment is acting. Weak strands are now a thing of the past as Eslabondexx strengthens the hair structure delivering elasticity, strength, and enhanced condition—preventing it from breaking. Now you can change your hair color every day, worry-free! Mix it with color or bleach, or use it with perming solutions, straighteners, or color correctors without any interference to the usual application procedure and processing time, and with guaranteed optimum results. You get maximum damage protection without any of the waxy feel! It boasts of a powerful Nio-Protect Technology: The Niosome, a new delivery system derived from skin care, carries natural origin actives—soybean isoflavones, cysteine, and phytoceramide—into the hair, allowing a deep product penetration from the cuticle into the cortex, for the best results. It’s a three-part system composed of: 1. Connector. Intermixed with the chemical treatment’s mixture during salon services, it creates new bonds within the hair, while protecting its existing internal structure. It improves hair strength and elasticity.
2. Amplifier. It is a fortifying cream, crosslinking Connector-developed bonds and already existing ones, while delivering added hydration and nourishment, for softer and full-bodied hair. 3. Sustainer. To be used for maintenance at home, it is a bi-weekly treatment, delivering emollients to enhance hair suppleness and give shine. How wonderful it is to be able to get your desired style—whether lush perms, sleek strands, or brilliant color—while keeping your hair protected. After all, no matter how on trend your hairstyle is, it will just be for naught if your locks are lifeless. Happy hair coloring! Available in all David’s Salon branches and Salon de Rose. N A WORLD that seems to have been taken over by piece-y long bobs and beachy waves, it’s refreshing to see a handful of ladies step out of the runway with sleek, slicked-back hair. We’re heading into the future with this minimalist hair trend—it’s sophisticated, polished, and chic! And this season’s theme for Prabal Gurung’s Fall/Winter 2017 show centered on female power, and that translated to a ponytail party and a graphic floating liner look. You would think creating simple, straight strands would be as low-maintenance as the hairstyle looks, but unfortunately, the opposite is true. So, to help you on your journey to looking sleek yourself, we’ve come up with a handful of products to help you get started!

Vania romoff ’s Instagram account and you will immediately know that this woman is pure style, passion, and class. The 29-year-old fashion designer grew up running around her grandmother’s atelier, so it’s safe to say she lived and breathed fashion ever since the days of her youth. The years have definitely honed her eye for style really well, as she is considered one of the go-to fashion designers for the A-list, including celebrities, models, and influential women in society. she has dressed the likes of Anne Curtis, Kelsey Merritt, Janine gutierrez, tricia gosingtian, and Belle Daza. her designs are known to flatter the female silhouette perfectly, and she has then ventured into bridal gown designing as well – to the satisfaction of picky brides-tobe. when asked what keeps her motivated about her craft, she says, “The idea of working towards certain goals keeps me motivated. I am also working extra hard because I have my own little family now.” simply put, Vania is perhaps at the stage in her life

FAQS
Metro tries to answer your online shopping woes How do I pay? Most sites offer payments through credit card or PayPal, some even accept cash on delivery. For Facebook and Instagram sellers, bank deposits/transfers or money remittance is the most popular mode of payment. What about shipping? The industry standard for local online stores and sellers is one to three days for Metro Manila and three to five days for provincial addresses. For international shipments, like Sephora and Althea, it can take anytime between five to ten days. What if I bought a product and it’s not what I expected? Before going to checkout, make sure you know a shop’s return policy. While websites often allow returns after a specific number of days, sellers on Facebook and Instagram probably wouldn’t offer it. Always think twice before paying.

ESCRIBE your personal beauty routine when you wake up and before sleeping. “There is no typical ‘routine’ for me. I get up in the morning and wash my face and put on some moisturizer. I genuinely love doing makeup and experimenting with different looks, so there is no one beauty look that I typically stick to.” Tell us about your trademark beauty look. Why do you keep coming back to this look? “I have experimented so much with my look over the years and I still do. I can’t say I have a favorite look. I always need to have something for my lips. I think that’s probably one of the most important things for me. I don’t really know why I love red lipstick so much. I think it’s quite glamorous and makes a bold statement and makes me feel unique.” What’s your favorite beauty advice from your mom? “The best beauty advice I’ve received from my mom is the classic tale that beauty comes from within. So does creativity. Being creative
with makeup is a way to find new confidence that you didn’t think you would have. No matter what is going on in my life, for me, makeup is like war paint for that day that [puts] me [in] the right mood.” If you could look like anyone else, whose face would you love to have? “We’re all unique and special just as we are.” What would you tell your 18-year-old self? “I’ve been asked this question a lot and whether it’s advice for my 16- or 18-year-old self, I think probably the advice I’d give would be to trust more in maybe exploring what other makeup artists can do and what I can learn from them. There was a period in time where I was quite scared and wanted to only do my own makeup, which I think is a good thing as well. But I think if I went back, it would have been fun to learn as much as I know now by trusting some other talents.” METRO

A BEAUTIFUL LIFE
M
IDMORNING, I make my way to midManhattan upon the invitation of Aerin Lauder’s team. Aerin, is the founder and creative director of the luxury lifestyle brand AERIN, and the style and image director of Estée Lauder. Her grandma Estée built her empire on her business acumen for what customers need along with her distinct acumen for beauty—with Estée, the daughter of Hungarian immigrants, dreaming of a different kind of life as she mixes face creams in her kitchen in Corona, Queens. It would not be too difficult to imagine then that Aerin would follow the same path of imagining products that inspire extraordinary living. Aerin’s studio is located in the Fuller
building, an Art Deco gem in the corner of 57th and Madison built in the 1929. Then and even now, it houses many art galleries, most of which prefer its high ceilings and large windows overlooking the city below. The first thing you’ll notice as you enter are the mosaic floors surrounded by ornamental gilding, your eye leading up to the row of elevators. One of these elevators lead to Aerin’s design studio, an office she established when she decided to launch her own line of makeup, along with her essentials—sheer foundation, illuminating bronzer, lip and cheek cream, lip conditioner, hand and body moisturizer. As soon as the door opens, you’ll realize that her space is unlike any other corporate office, one where you immediately look for a snazzy reception desk with a phone and fax machine, a small L-shaped sofa on the side with magazines meant for guests, perhaps a METRO

Instead, my eyes were led to the main room with two sofas underneath a crystal chandelier. There’s a small vestibule on the side with a rough concrete table punctuated by a floral bouquet. Our first meeting, however, was over what constitutes a “conference table,” a mirrored dining table by Karl Springer in the 1950s. On top are samples of her newest perfume line, Aerin, which she launched in Manila in 2015, and an assortment of candles and fresh flowers that filled the room with instant cheer. Aerin came out of the room dressed in a white shift dress with volume sleeves, her hair delicately tucked behind her ear, her face with just a hint of makeup. “That’s one thing I learned from her. She always used to spend so much time in the office, and she’s been so comfortable and beautiful as possible. She tried to make everything like a home. If you go to the Estée Lauder office, which is just across the street, they have a salon like this, but it’s all blue and white and a bit more formal. And I really felt strongly about continuing that tradition.” Grandmother’s legacy. “She was an amazing woman. She lived in Queens, her parents barely spoke English, and she didn’t go to college. She had this incredible dream, and passion, and drive. She realized there was an opportunity to do high-end skincare and makeup, so she started it, and she was very persistent, even to the very end.” Fondest memory. “She was really warm. And she was kind of like the grandmother that would tell you to take more than one chocolate. She loved life. And she loved to travel and meet people, and food! She loved chocolates, that’s her favorite thing. She always had a little refrigerator full of chocolate boxes. And because of that you can see her love of beauty or home, and family and friends, and living.”
FAVORITE PLACES IN THE CITY: Parks. Central Park. I love going for walks there. I think it’s so beautiful, it’s like an oasis. Shopping. Barneys and Bergdorfs, or Nike with my kids. Restaurants. Indochine, which is a classic New York staple. I love Greenway, which is a beautiful French restaurant, for special occasions.

This rich shade ain’t for all, but our quick takeaway is that there is a perfect shade for each color that sits well with every skin tone, so embark on that journey to find the one. We imagine this impactful look for a night out on the town. Get the look: When sporting plum lips, try to match your lips with your eyes. You don’t necessarily have to match makeup with the clothes, but you do have to match it with your face. A red lip will never go out of style, but there are fresher ways to update this classic. This season, you can opt to color outside the lines so to speak, as a messy, stained, and not too perfect lip is on-trend. Take cue from the Giambattista Valli and Preen F/W 2017 runways for more inspiration. Pro tip: Use full coverage lip color to fill the lips just inside the lip line. Soften the edges using a lip brush or a cotton bud then apply a similar shade of lip gloss on the lip line and just a little outside it. Blend the lip color and lip gloss just up to where they meet for a seamless finish. Get the look: 1 Revlon Powder Blush in Orchid Charm. THE ‘60s SHOW
The Mod look made waves in Fall 2017 runways like Ryan Lo and Chanel, and in our opinion, it’s one of the chicest trends you can cop to change things up with your beauty game this season. With the right technique, you’re well on your way to channeling your inner Twiggy! Pro tip: Using a deep blue kohl eyeliner, trace the upper lash line and wing it out at the outer corners. Draw a sweeping line along the eye crease, connecting it to the winged end of the eyeliner at the upper lash lines and gradually fading towards the inner corner. Blend over the eye liner with a same shade of eye shadow. Get the look: 1 Charlotte Gainsbourg for NARS Velvet Duo Eyeshadow in Old Church Street. SEXY BLUES
Here’s a non-cheesy way to rock the blue eyeshadow look without bringing back bad high school memories. We go the smoky eye route á la Anna Sui F/W 2017 and pair it with killer confidence—with the help of a cocktail or two! Pro tip: Apply a lid color using a blue creamy eyeshadow stick by drawing criss-crossed lines then using an eyeshadow blending brush, blend it all over the lid until the color is uniform. Next, take a similar shade of powder eyeshadow and blend it over the cream eyeshadow as this will create dimension and helps extend eyeshadow wear. Take the same eyeshadow stick and use it to line the upper and lower lash lines. Apply it on the waterline as well and close your eyes firmly to smudge the eyeliner. Complete the look by curling the lashes and applying generous coats of mascara. Get the look: 1 BYS Face Contour Palette. At Watsons 2 Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in Defy. rich Gonzales wants to be someone else tonight. A chilly evening in New York City, and Erich and I are out downtown waiting for a car to take us to East Village. She’s wearing a black little number with white bow straps, Chanel flats, and her tiny Saint Laurent bag that fits her phone, a credit card, perhaps some cash. We’ll be a little late, for sure. We’re on our way to meet Bianca Consunji, Metro’s former associate editor, now video producer at Buzzfeed News; and Evan Engels, her video journalist boyfriend working in the Wall Street Journal. What Bianca and Erich don’t know is that they’ve met before, although this fact was lost on me when I first introduced them. Bianca was part of the team that interviewed the nine Star Magic girls on that epic cover seven years ago, the one we recreated just recently with the next 12 girls that will shape the industry in the years to come. It seemed like such a long time ago for Erich, that’s for sure. Seven years ago, she was fresh off the heels of her lauded performance in Katorse, a remake where she played the complex role of a teenage mother, Nene. This was also the part that launched Dina Bonnevie’s career, one that requires a newfound maturity and mad acting skills. Two years after, we saw her again, just as she was just starting her international movie with Mario Maurer, her character Joey afraid to fall in love until she meets this Thai actor—two people seeking to find themselves because of their past, eventually falling for each other. Even then, at age 22, she has known love and its vicissitudes, and has been hurt by it. “Lahat naman tayo, once in our lives, nagmahal
tayo, nasaktan na rin. I draw from my own experiences. Experienced heartbreak, no; but love, yes,” she clarifies. “But I still believe that there’s someone out there meant for you.” Which is why it is all the more interesting that Erich, who was guarded about her life during the first two days of our shoot, would suddenly, among strangers, begin telling bits and pieces of how she had come to this point in her life—a single girl in New York City, still bleeding from the wounds of heartbreak but hoping for something else, for something more. She began talking about her most recent relationship and how she has moved on. The setting of Erich opening up was Milon, an Indian restaurant Bianca picked among the four other colorful restaurants in its environs. It had no more than 15 tables, and was decorated in the most insane manner possible—its ceiling was full of Christmas lights in orange, yellow, red, green, and white. One could not tell where the ceiling ended and the lights began—it was electric, it was absurd, it was New York City at its loudest. And Erich was our dear special guest, because, we told the server, today was her birthday. Now birthdays in Milon were special, the entire restaurant celebrated it with you—flashing Christmas lights set on an EDM version of “Baar Baar Din Yeh Aaye,” or Happy Birthday in Hindi, and with the dim restaurant, the lights crawl up your skin like little fireworks. Erich found herself clapping, beaming, enjoying her “cake,” a mango sherbet on with a candle on top. “It’s my birthday!” she beams at the occupants of another table, a rowdy group of tourists from Australia. The group kept saying how pretty she was. We said, of course she’s an actress. “Have we seen her in anything,” they asked. We doubted it, but still attempted to give a semblance of an explanation. Not convinced of our claim to associated fame, we showed them Erich’s Instagram account, all 2.4 million followers of it. Scrolling through it, they were impressed, fascinated even. They wanted to say more but in the city of movement and dynamism, we were already on our way to our next adventure.

I
t’s 10PM and I’m surprised at Erich’s energy across all this. Three days ago, we were hanging out in the airport lounge, waiting for the famous arrozcaldo of Philippine Airlines, treading slowly with our conversation to figure out each other. I wonder if she’s in a good mood, I thought to myself, my priority was making sure everything in the shoot would go as planned. It won’t be easy—we had multiple locations across the city and only two days to shoot, a challenge for any creative team. Turns out, Erich was a consummate professional. It didn’t matter if she was jetlagged—she was; or that she was tired—that much was also true. By the first day of the shoot, without any sleep and squeezing in an hour of work out in the gym, she was up and sitting on Jigs Mayuga’s makeup chair, with a view of Wall Street down below. That day meant walking a total of 14,595 steps across the Brooklyn Bridge, to Dumbo, to Fulton Pier, to finding that link to walk up Manhattan Bridge, to Marcy Avenue, and then back to city as we waited for the evening lights to come up in Times Square. “We started in the morning, rested in the afternoon, and finished at midnight—but it didn’t feel like work at all,” she said earlier, relieved how the shoot went smoothly. This was a major moment for Erich, who hasn’t been seen on Metro in such a long time, a solo cover at that. She repeated this sentiment on our way to East Village, obviously still on a high from the events of the previous days. “When I first found out about the shoot, I was so happy. I told Ate Love [Capulong, her handler], really? A cover? Walang bawian ha!” she says. “I was so excited!” Though it was not her first visit to NYC, this would be the only time she’ll really get to explore the other boroughs and even meet the locals. “It’s like I’m seeing New York with fresh eyes. Every experience was worth it. It’s parang my first time na rin to go around New York City,” she says of the shoot. “I became a tourist all over again.” She was a stylish tourist, that’s for sure. On the Brooklyn Bridge, she walked in killer boots and a Patty Ang skirt, then changed into a fancy Rhett Eala white and nude gown which glistened against the morning sun. In Dumbo, she was stomping around in a black Edwin Tan top, gathering stares and meaningful glances as she posed against the Manhattan Bridge. In Marcy Avenue, she rocked in a Tommy Hilfiger ensemble, standing out against the artful graffiti and grime, the city’s artwork. She was truly embracing New York—all of its nooks and crannies, the grease and the gentrification, the glamour and the golden dream—as a girl willing to be transformed. She was a girl seeking to be made new. “In every place you travel to, you get to discover something new about yourself—you get to see the big picture. The big picture,” she says, her eyes likewise bigger, emphasizing her point.
After all, Erich was at an intersection of her life. She was far gone the ingénue that broke out winning Star Circle Quest in 2005 which jumpstarted her career, from her hits Katorse and Magkaribal, from her films I Do and Noy with Coco Martin, which became the country’s first entry into the Best Foreign Language Film category of the Oscars. It has been years since her role in the Filipino film adaptation of Maria La Del Barrio, or her Suddenly It’s Magic with Thai superstar Mario Maurer. And it has been a year since Be My Lady, which had her with her real-life sweetheart, now ex-boyfriend, Daniel Matsunaga. She was the Pinang to his Phil, but though it extended beyond the series, that relationship is no more. The Erich now has moved on towards something better. She has just finished three movies this year and is about to work on another teleserye and a horror film with Director Dondon Monteverde. The first is Siargao by Paul Soriano, which required her to learn how to surf. “It’s a love story, a story about finding yourself, learning or realizing what’s really important for you and what matters,” she says, again, portraying a woman in search of something—their selves, their truth, their meaning. In a way, this has been the narrative of her life, one she also cannot escape just as easily. This month alone, she’ll be starring in the Significant Other, under the direction of Joel Lamangan. This will give her another opportunity to portray a complex strong woman, much like who she is now. Her third film has extended far beyond her capacity as an actress. We Will Not Die Tonight is a highly visual and highly stimulating flick—action, suspense, thriller. It was so edgy that it was difficult to find someone who’ll take a risk on it. But Erich, saw value and promise in Richard Somes’ vision that she offered to produce it. “I believed the story so much that I wanted to share it with everyone else,” she says. Not only was it her first time to be involved as a producer, it was her first major action role as well, one that required a great many stunts, and difficult scenes—all of which she preferred to do everything by herself. “It gave me a different satisfaction,” she says, going home with cuts, bruises, scratches, and even bumps on the head. The set was also different because most of them were working out of love for the project. “It’s good to work with people who share the same passion as you.” Indeed, it has been a very different year from the last. If 2016 was a good year in terms of project, where she top-billed a teleserye, 2017, though somber, came with many epiphanies. “This year is all about realizations, there were so many lessons learned. It’s also a year of transformation,” she says. When she says transformation, she also meant physical. Erich is at her peak right now. She is at her METRO

most beautiful—her long hair chopped into a modern one-cut bob, a post-breakup look that worked so well on her it inspired many copycats; her body at its best, sixpack abs and a physique so toned that merits a web article every time she posts anything showing her midriff. And for our shoot, we gave her that last piece of the puzzle— the clothes that transform you to be someone you never imagined yourself to be. That is one of fashion’s greatest power: The ability to make a profound difference in someone’s life and outlook with just a change of clothes. Somehow, putting on that Gigi Hadid and Tommy Hilfiger ensemble set her off on the road to cool girl New York chic, the sticker and graffiti-lined streets as her runway. Or how the innate femininity of the Tory Burch florals gave her a little taste of New York elegance, or how the Michael Kors sleeveless trench, when pictured against the Metropolitan Museum, turns into a scene right out of Gossip Girl. Erich might have grown up watching Sex and the City, but today, she is more than imagining it, she is living it, breathing it—the dream and the hope of New York for any girl. For single girls.
W
e reach Mona’s after a few minutes of walking. I promised Erich I would take her to a jazz club, and here we were. But both of us weren’t drinking, we didn’t need to. Instead we both got a natural high, experiencing live music, letting vibrations seep through the bench where we were sitting, bringing us to sway and bob our heads as we keep up with the beat. It was the last performance for Evan’s brother, Jared, to play strings for the bar’s Tuesday Night Hot Jazz. Like Erich, he was moving on to another gig, to better things. But Erich, right beside me, was just getting started with her night. It was then that she started talking about her relationship, her failed romance, and somehow, with the loud music that seemed to play at your emotions, the brassy wail of the trumpet and the thumping of the upright bass, gave her the push to let the dam break, to let all emotions run lose, to tell it all. We didn’t stop talking. Not after settled our bill. Not after we took a yellow cab home. I wish you could have been in that room with us, to hear everything she said. How all hopes were dashed, how a beautiful love story crumbled under the mess of reality. How it is really to fall in love without a safety net, and realize that it was a mistake to bet so much into something so ephemeral and volatile. To wonder whether there should have been regrets, but still, trying hard not to think about it, too much. The Erich I met that evening was brave. It takes a brave person to see themselves for what they really are, to talk about the past as if it is lesson and not a pain point.
In our formal interview, she was less candid. Yet she was speaking from a place of truth. “Pain changes people. Pain is inevitable, but I feel like it’s necessary for you to grow.” She was very mature in saying that, even as she is just on the verge of recovering. In a way, she thinks it turned out well, everything. Because she was able to inspire other women who have gone through the same ordeal. The Erich that night was also unguarded. She wasn’t an actress, she was just a girl, telling her story to a rapt and captivated audience of one. She was just being herself.
T
he next day, Erich and I walked around the city, she insisted on taking me to go maternity shopping. In between grabbing feeding bottles and onesies, she would read her script, a new project she was keen to take on. This would be her next step to a transformation back in Manila. After this she had so many plans, she has a bucket list of things to do, things to learn. See the Northern Lights. Go bungee jumping and scuba diving. Find her own happiness. It’s a process, you see. “I learned that you shouldn’t really depend your happiness on other people, or with anything. It should come from within,” she says. Though our story was centered on Erich, the single woman in New York City, this was not her narrative alone. Her story always involves finding herself, and then making that into something better. “For now, I’m focusing on self-love and self-improvement. The only thing I’m committed to right now is bettering myself. I keep telling myself that every day is a new day; an opportunity for you to be better,” she says, a little more upbeat this time. We were at the crossroads of One World Trade Center, cutting across the pool memorial as we make our way back to our hotel. We were quiet for a while, both of us thinking, knowing we are nearing the end of our time together. When we go home, Erich would be embroiled in a storm not of her making, of someone asking her out on a coffee date via a billboard—the only way you can call the attention of someone as big of a moviestar as she is. I didn’t worry about her, not a bit. I knew she was a fighter, and that she’ll just shrug it all off. But there was one image that stayed with me. A few streets down our hotel is an image of a Bull of Wall Street, with a little girl facing the menacing creature. That girl is Erich, and the bull is the world. That’s how she stares at it, with conviction and with a steely heart. And everywhere around her is New York. That city, no, this city, is part of her journey, the city is the final step to her redemption. To her survival. To her freedom. METRO

Sometimes fate brings you to a completely new environment, one where you have to begin all over again. Such is the story of Sarah Meier, Metro editor-at-large, who left her beautiful life in Manila to follow her heart. She takes us around her new ‘hood in Brooklyn, as she shares her inspiring story of making the bold move to choose love, amidst everything else.
CONQUER THE BOROUGH Sarah has always been fascinated with Brooklyn—for her, this borough represented creativity, freedom, and self-expression. It was a place for artists, a place where you get the spirit of New York City and its infinite possibilities, but with a more intimate, neighborhood feel. Top, SM Woman; jacket; H&M.

ROAD TO YOU Sarah lives in Bedford-Stuyvesant, also known as Bed-Stuy; located in central Brooklyn and linked to the hip Williamsburg. This historic neighborhood has picturesque brownstones and quaint storefronts, showing the dynamism of the old and new. Bed-Stuy is also known as the heart of hip-hop, where Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z once lived.
“I can absolutely say that I already found love in Brooklyn. I like to have that sense of being in a community where everybody goes through a struggle, and you know they’re able to come out of it validated.” SMUDGED LINER Nothing makes the eyes look bigger, brighter and more lifted than a flick of black liner. Elegant and sophisticated, Revlon ColorStay Liquid Eye Pen glides on effortlessly for a thin or thick line and lasts all day long. Top, SM Woman; trousers, H&M; jacket, Rajo Laurel.

THE LOOK OF LOVE There are many places in Brooklyn close to Sarah’s heart. She loves going to the library of the Brooklyn Museum, then there’s Prospect Park, which she considers a chill version of Central Park. There’s also McCarren Park, where she used to write notes and poems in pencil to her husband, Jon, notes and poems on the bench, in pencil. Rain would often wash away whatever it was that she wrote, but that was the beauty of it.
WASH OF PINK
“This was really the setting of 95% of our love story. A lot of the falling and the trying to fight it… just realizing that we wanted to be together. It all happened here.”

HEY SAY YOU SHOULDN’T meet your idols in real life, but Maureen Wroblewitz definitely qualifies as an exception. The 19-year-old FilipinaGerman model took the world by storm after being crowned Asia’s Next Top Model (AsNTM), bringing pride to the Philippines as the contest’s first Filipina winner after five seasons. Beyond her cool, flawless exterior is a goofy, charming sweetheart very much worth getting to know. INSTA-GRATIFICATION
Born in Riyadh, Maureen spent 12 years in Saudi Arabia, the very place where her parents first met. Her father’s career eventually brought their family to Germany, where her three sisters and stepbrother still reside. “I’ve wanted to be a model since I was 13,” says Maureen, remembering how she’d watch Germany’s Top Model and dreamt of joining one day. Not expecting to grow any taller than 5’6, Maureen started letting go of this dream—until her then soon-to-be-manager, Chinie Go of Prima Stella Model Management, stumbled across a photo of her while scrolling through Instagram’s Explore Tab. “It just happened,” Maureen says. “By that time, I didn’t know that people got discovered on Instagram.” At 15, her dream was finally on its way to becoming reality—on one condition from her father: That she begin only after finishing her high school education. Chinie shares that while the waiting game is usually the tough part, Maureen was definitely worth the three-year wait. A month into life and modeling in Manila, Maureen was given the chance to try out for Asia’s Next Top Model—an opportunity she took with zero expectations. “I was thinking, ‘Oh, they’re not gonna take me anyway.’ That was how I went into the casting, and I didn’t feel nervous at all. I was super casual, and that’s why I was so shocked that they liked me.” THE GIRL WHO THREATENS THE COMPETITION
Finally wrapping her head around the situation, Maureen was more than happy to represent the Philippines and in a way connect to her Filipino heritage, which she gets from her mom. At 11, Maureen was heartbroken after losing her to breast cancer. “My mom, she’s always been my role model and motivation. She was very strong as a person.” It was this very strength that she turned to during an unforgettable moment on AsNTM. “I got confronted by three of the girls, and they were telling me I was just a pretty face with no skills,” she shares. “It was scary because I’m not a person who fights back. So I just said, ‘Okay, that’s your opinion—but I feel like everyone deserves a place here,’ and I tried to stay METRO

strong, even though that hurt me a lot.” The episode, aptly entitled The Girl Who Threatens the Competition, ends with Maureen winning the best photo of the week, proving everyone wrong—and gracefully at that. MODEL OFF-DUTY
“I’m pretty weird—I think everything [I do] is weird,” Maureen quips, dropping the model persona for one second. One of her quirks, she shares, is dramatically reciting lines from movies when watching them a second time around with her sisters or friends. “When I watch a movie, sometimes I like to act it out. I just say what they’re saying, how I would say it if I were them. I try to copy their accents! One time I did that, and the person I was with was just looking at me like, ‘What are you doing?’” she laughs. Maureen is also a big fantasy geek. “I’m a super fan of The Vampire Diaries, and when it ended I cried a lot. I also like The Originals, Shadowhunters... So many!” She tells us about the TV shows she enjoys binge-watching—a pastime she misses, as she now juggles her busy schedule. “And there’s this book series… Oh my, I love it really, I cried a lot also when it finished. It’s called The Lunar Chronicles. I really recommend it!” On free days, she’s happy to just take it easy at home. “I don’t have pamper days, but then I just listen to music and I just lie in my bed, think about life,” she says with a laugh. “I like alternative music—The Japanese House, Howard, 1975, Bastille.” While she currently plans to focus on her career, Maureen still intends to finish studying. “In a few years, I’m thinking about studying abroad and doing something connected to design because I’m a creative person. Fashion, interior, or something in that direction. It might change also, though.” TAKING LONDON BY STORM
On becoming the next ‘it’ girl practically overnight, Maureen says, “It just feels weird because I feel the same. But I try to stay like that—grounded and approachable. I don’t want people to think I’m better than everyone else; just because I won a title, it doesn’t change who I am.” As the AsNTM winner, Maureen was ecstatic about winning a title for her country—the grand prize package was a generous plus. Apart from a cover and fashion spread with an international fashion magazine and a brand new car, she also got to sign with London-based Storm Model Management—the very agency that discovered icon Kate Moss and marked the beginnings of Cara Delevingne’s career, one of Maureen’s idols. “I’m really excited, but then again, I’m also nervous because it’s a lot different in London. It’s very tough. It’s scary, but I’m still excited.” Maureen Wroblewitz has officially stepped into the scene, and all of this is just the beginning.

WHAT WE LEARNED FROM MAUREEN 1.
Be patient. She waited two years to be discovered, and another three years to finally kickstart her modeling career.
2.
Face your fears. She started out hesitant about the idea of joining a reality show and compe tition, but in the end, it paid of f.
3.
Be yourself. She embraces her quirks instead of hiding them.
4.
Haters are your motivators. Instead of fighting back, she took other people’s criticism as motivation. The best revenge is massive success!

I
N THIS CRAZY-COMPETITIVE,
ever-changing world of fashion, the Professional Models Association of the Philippines (PMAP) is a much-needed bastion. Gone are the days when brands were beholden to fashion models for the right image; today Instagram stars and young influencers abound, offering a new proposition. Digital media and fast fashion are at their peak, and new models can only overcome these challenges with mentors, teammates, and guides they can trust. Contrary to first impressions, PMAP is not a modeling agency. Instead, it occupies a unique place in the fashion and modeling world: It’s both a union and an association, founded in 1987, a pioneer in the global modeling industry. As PMAP celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, it remains the sole non-profit organization run by models, for models. Since its establishment, PMAP has come far in empowering its roster to plan and manage their careers through in-depth workshops and training. With household names such as Kelsey Merritt, Phoemela Baranda, Tweetie De Leon, Rissa Mananquil, Hye Won Jang, Hannah Locsin, and Jach Manere in the PMAP roster, the association has a stellar track record of guiding its models to success, most critically now, as aspiring models often start young. IT BEGINS HERE
Twelve years old. That’s how young Kira Manansala was when she was introduced into the modeling business. On the other hand, Mauro Lumba was a freshman student when he submitted his first model’s portfolio. Jach Manere, too, was in college when she went to her first go-see. Fresh, new faces barely in their twenties are plucked from different walks of life; but in order to thrive, they need to put up with the demands of fashion, now both online and offline. Aside from putting models on the ladder to success, PMAP leads through its ideals and aspirations for the modeling industry. Through the years, PMAP models have consistently been outspoken in claiming their rights and advancing the PMAP vision of reasonable working hours and standardized compensation in the industry. “Kaya nabuo ang PMAP,” says PMAP treasurer Ana Sideco. “Because [most people] saw modeling not as a profession, but as a sideline. Our vision is to protect, uplift, and professionalize the modeling industry.” She cites the need for standards in terms of compensation, reasonable working hours, and contracts, demanding that models be treated just like any working professional. Another advocacy where PMAP succeeded was in the push for more diversity in modeling. Ana relates that prior to PMAP, only fair-skinned models got jobs, but after the organization’s advocacy to “love your own,” morena models were more appreciated and soon became in demand. METRO

SEPTEMBER 2017
Members are unanimous in saying that PMAP is very different from modeling agencies because of the strong mentorship found exclusively in their organization. In addition, the strong relationships in PMAP are based on trust. “PMAP is a family built on trust,” says Ralph Kiefer, the current president of the association. The organization emphasizes teamwork and unity, as models guide each other throughout the stages of their careers. “It’s a really nice system because it’s always the seniors, the ones with the most experience, who teach the [younger models].” Ralph continues, “When you’re on the board of PMAP, you don’t get paid. It’s all voluntary. I think that is our strength. [Trust] is something you can’t break. And I think this is very good for the Philippine modeling industry because it can be quite chaotic.” Angela Lehman shared these sentiments, stating that PMAP truly cares for its models and never takes a cut from talent fees. “Aside from sending me to go-sees and sending my cards to all these clients, [PMAP] also makes sure that I get paid properly. It also makes an effort for me to meet important people in the industry. I would never have been able to network well without PMAP.” UPLIFT, PROTECT, AND PROFESSIONALIZE
Angela also shares how PMAP involves itself in elevating the standards of the modeling industry, especially since professionalism and its related qualities are given for any PMAP member. “PMAP makes sure that its models are more than perfect. [Models] get there on time—not just on time, but even before the call time! PMAP makes us come in the most presentable attire from head to toe, even if it’s just for a fitting.” Opportunities to learn in PMAP abound, and though it encourages models to treat modeling as a career, not a side job, mastering the art of modeling is definitely not the end-all. As Wilma Doesnt shares, members become versatile and confident in their social skills through lessons on fine dining, walking, and grooming. There are also workshops for more obscure matters, such as paying taxes. Through training and teamwork, PMAP has catapulted countless models to great heights. The hundreds of determined members who have undergone a rigorous entry process can attest to that. The pride and fulfillment that comes from becoming a member is priceless, explained Brent Javier. “Being associated with PMAP is a great thing. It speaks volumes of the Philippine fashion industry.” The influence PMAP has on the fashion and modeling industry is undeniable—from empowering morenas and professionalizing the art, to advancing calls for unity in compensation and job security. What more the influence it has on the lives of its members, who are now more empowered than ever? In a saturated industry, where things can change in the blink of an eye and competition can be cutthroat, fashion models can be sure of success with one thing: A timetested, consistent support system that trains, mentors, and adapts to changing trends. A family they can trust.

EDITOR’S DIARIES
NEW YORK, NEW YORK The Metro editors explore a different side of the city that never sleeps, this time focusing on downtown Manhattan and the edges of Brooklyn—spots that mix the old and the new
Views of the Manhattan bridge from DUMBO.
BROOKLYN Many of our stories revolved around the borough of Brooklyn, where a hip, youthful energy permeates. From the neighborhood of Williamsburg, to iconic sights like the bridge, to beautiful open spaces like Prospect Park, it’s a great counterpoint to the steady mania of Manhattan life.
SEE
Brooklyn Bridge. When it opened in 1883, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, and though it has since given way to longer span bridges, this Gothic landmark that looks over the East River used to be the only land passage between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Every day, more than 100,000 cars, and thousands
of pedestrians cross in what seems to be one of the unifying symbols of America. Williamsburg. One neighborhood that has put Brooklyn in the consciousness of every Instagram and image-conscious millennial is Williamsburg, which borders Greenpoint to the north, Bedford-Stuyvesant to the south, and Bushwick to the east. Because of gentrification, the area has been infiltrated by hipster culture and a vibrant retail scene with restaurants, galleries, and bars for indie and jazz. Dumbo. Short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is a neighborhood in Brooklyn that gives excellent view of the bridge, now home to art galleries and tech startups. Walk around the area for picture-perfect views of the bridge, the best of which is on Washington Street. METRO

While you’re in Brooklyn, make sure to try Ample Hills ice cream, the rainbow cream bagel at The Bagel Store, and take your pick from the best pizzas in the ‘hood: Di Fara Pizza and Roberta’s.

Or you can cross over to Westlight, just across the street in the William Vale building. Breweries. Checkout The Brooklyn Brewery and Greenpoint Ale House for tasting, or head out to The Diamond or Brouwerij for its extensive beer menu.
EAT
There’s plenty to eat in North Brooklyn but we like Lilia for its pastas, Rye for its Long Island Duck Breast and Meatloaf Sandwich, which you can gobble up while chilling in this speakeasy, SEPTEMBER 2017
You don’t have to wait until Saturday for Smorgasburg on the Waterfront, you can explore the chic little boutiques around Williamsburg like Brooklyn Industries, vintage clothing stores, or ID New York, or Joinery, or In God We Trust.
HEAR
Head out to Brooklyn Bowl on Saturdays for some fun evening with classic R&B and retro music, or go out dancing in Output or Verbotem for some EDM. The indie band scene is mostly in Music Hall of Williamsburg, and Knitting Factory, so you’ve got to check that out early.

Financial District. Further up from Brooklyn is lower Manhattan, composed of Wall Street, the business district, and the World Trade Center site which is now developed into a complex with One World Trade Center, and the “Reflecting Absence” memorial that honors the WTC bombing on September 11. The most gorgeous addition is the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, which features high end retail stores as well. Chinatown. RADAR BOOK TOUR DIARIES
THE POWER OF THE READER How social media is ushering in a new age for writers and readers BY JENICA CHUAHIOCK
VEN IF YOU HAVE never heard of
Lang Leav, you probably would have read, or seen, her work as you subconsciously scroll down your feed. That occasional, plain page image, with a parchment-like background; a block of verses nestles at the center, once in a while with a very detailed caricature of a girl, or fauna. Perhaps you’ll ignore it, and then curiosity will compel you to read after it appears on your homepage for the fifth time. You might love it, or be incredulous by it; but you can’t deny it, that diary-like page is viral. When Lang first posted her poetry in 2012, she had not the slightest inkling how far a few words would take her; indeed, she’s not even quite sure of herself what moved her to share something so personal in the digital void. But in just a year’s time, and a million of shares after, Lang is suddenly the most buzzed name in the ‘Instapoets’ movement, an online phenomenon of rapid-sharing poetry. So rapid that she has since published four books of poetry, all of which are top-sellers; and as of this year, she has written her debut novel, Sad Girls, which topped the bestseller charts in its first month. “It’s really weird about the whole ‘Instapoets’ thing,” admits Lang, as she recalls her quick rise to social media stardom. Lang actually posted her first poems in Tumblr, where her initial following quickly ballooned, prompting her to get an agent for a publishing deal. She points out, she was a published poet
even before she joined Instagram. But somehow, her reputation rode with the rise of other online poets using the platform. “It’s really a strange thing. I don’t think we should have labels for writers, I think it’s quite restrictive,” she says, who has successfully transitioned to writing novels along with her poetry. Critics will shake their heads and call the likes of ‘Instapoets’ as mere fad, a trick of internet popularity and not literary merit. Yet, Lang and many other viral poets have effectively debunked the notion of poetry dying in the digital age. In fact, a new wave of writers, like Lang, have actually started with a global fan base before officially publishing in print. Perhaps with social media, gone are the days of a reclusive writer becoming famous only after her death, and subsequent discovery of her hidden work; one could even be an established writer before her name is actually published in print. “I think now it’s more about the people’s choice, rather than the publishers having all the power and all the say.” Lang weighs in on the writers’ future in a hyper-connected world, where writers and readers can interact more personally than ever before. “It puts the power into the hands of the readers, and the content that they would like to see, instead of [readers] being dictated to what they should be reading. I think it’s a fantastic thing.” Sad Girls is available at National Book Store.

WHAT’S NEW, NEW YORK?
New York, so aptly named, never runs out of anything modern and innovative. To keep up with New Yorkers, here’s everything trending in lifestyle, beauty, and fashion in the concrete jungle BY ABBY ARANDA
T
HERE’S NO CITY in the world quite like New York. It has an inherent energy that keeps creative juices flowing, and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there’s often something brewing in every corner. New Yorkers are always busy, but they always have something to show for it. For years, the Big Apple has been the pioneer in redefining anything from fashion and lifestyle to technology. There’s just something about this city that excites people. Here are six of the latest in fashion, food, and lifestyle in this fast-paced jungle that never sleeps:
PHOTOGRAPHS (REBECCA MINKOFF) ABBY ARANDA / (LEAD AND OTHERS) MR. PURPLE, SPYGLASS ROOFTOP, PARDON MY FRENCH, BOMBFELL, BY CHLOE ON INSTAGRAM
1. ROOFTOP BARS
New York boasts of a magnificent skyline that makes a great backdrop for most selfies. There’s nothing like basking in this spectacular view with a cocktail in hand, too. There are bars for every personality and budget—from sleek and sophisticated rooftop lounges in swanky hotels to low-key ones tucked away in an up-and-coming neighborhood. Mr. Purple in the Lower East Side is one of the most popular rooftop bars in the city. No matter what time of day, there’s always a line forming outside.Another spot to check out is Spyglass Rooftop Bar, they have specialty craft cocktails that you can enjoy with the Empire State Building right in front of you. 2. BOOZY BRUNCH
Brunch in this city is a much-anticipated weekend activity. This kind of brunch is extra special because New Yorkers love their booze. Enjoy your waffles, bacon or eggs Benedict with alcohol for the better part of your morn-
ing (or in our case, afternoon)—brunches here last until 5PM! Pardon My French in the East Village offers the option of having unlimited mimosas with a Parisian-style dining experience. How often can you say you had breakfast in Paris in New York? 3. FASHION SUBSCRIPTION BOXES
Subscription services are becoming a necessity these days (Netflix is proof of that). Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, along with endless to-do lists, social commitments, and work responsibilities, New York women somehow make it out alive in style. Because of that, fashion subscription services are popping up everywhere. Just fill out a style questionnaire and a personal stylist sends you a set of clothes that fits your lifestyle, personality, and needs. There are a few that are in the market already: Stitch Fix gives you five pieces of clothing per month with the option of returning unwanted pieces. Bombfell is a subscription box just for men. They let you know the items you are about to receive before they send it to you and you can always cancel before shipping and adjust it based on your preferences. This is a great way to save time and effort shopping. 4. HIGH-TECH STORES
Retail may be dying but technology has found a way to resuscitate. Now, stores are trying to incorporate online shopping into brick-and-mortar stores. Imagine a mirror in a fitting room that you can use as an iPad to get a different size or color. Stores like Reformation and Rebecca Minkoff already have smart METRO

mirrors that bring the convenience of online shopping to the store. Zara is trying to hop in on the trend by having self check out and minimizing time wasted lining up. Once you are ready to purchase an item, you can scan the barcode and swipe your credit card yourself. This is a perfect union of fashion and technology. 5. VEGAN ICE CREAM
Vegan Ice Cream may sound like an oxymoron, but restaurants are popping up with this healthy treat on the menu. Ice cream with no animal products means no dairy at all! Soho, Williamsburg and East Village all have their own unique flavors for you to hit that sweet spot. Van Leeuwen in the East Village has vegan and non-vegan options, but their vegan coffee-flavored ice cream tastes so rich and creamy even without the cream. How does organic kale ice cream sound? This is probably one of By Chloe’s best-selling ice cream flavors. Their menu is strictly for the health conscious, but don’t be fooled because you’ll keep coming back for more. 6. VITAMIN C SKINCARE PRODUCTS
Because women in New York are always so busy, they are starting to go bare faced with minimal to no make up. It’s easier to pull this off with close to perfect skin. Anti-aging products have been around forever but vitamin C, in particular, also lets your skin become brighter. It can be used in serums, facial cleansers, SPF, and moisturizers to give your skin a natural glow. One product to consider is Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum. It’s infused with collagen that helps lighten dark spots and makes your skin brighter with every use.

HEN YOU’RE ON a quest for Chinese food, it is highly likely that you already know where to get them. In the Sacai Fall RTW ‘17 Philippines, some of the best Chinese restaurants are located in Binondo, Manila, but the city also offers a lot at par. City of Dreams Manila’s newest casual dining restaurant Jing Ting is simply something for those looking for Oriental fare. If you’re craving for the familiar dim sums and seafood, you can’t find those here. Rather, you’ll discover the taste of Northern China in mostly meat dishes with wheatbased dumplings and noodles. Compared to the flavors of Ssouthern Chinese cuisines, Northern China’s taste is generally richer, more aromatic, and a little spicier. Through homegrown spices, ingredients, and traditional cooking
methods, Chef de Cuisine Yang Chen Fei, or Chef Allan, makes sure that the guests get to experience utmost authenticity. Here, you’ll come across dishes that are unlike anything you are used to—there’s the Genghis Khan Roasted Prime Beef Short Ribs, “Xinjiang Style” Spicy Lamb Skewer with Cumin Spices, and Pan-Fried Grains and Bacon Pancake Roll, just to name a few. From the Oriental-themed interiors of red lanterns and cherry blossoms, to its open house kitchen where chefs whip up hand-pulled noodles from scratch, and of course, the flavorsome dishes—all of which make up the reasons why dining at Jing Ting is something to add to your list. Visit Jing Ting at Upper Ground Floor of City of Dreams Manila, Asean Avenue cor. Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City. For more information, visit cityofdreamsmanila.com

RED ALERT
TWO OF THE MOST recognizable logos in fashion converge into a collaboration that is in all
ways cool. The Louis Vuitton x Supreme collection is where luxury meets streetwear—a feat done in so many other iterations but has never been this relevant. The much-hyped Supreme brand has become a go-to for street enthusiasts but adding the Louis Vuitton touch paves the way for a new market for both brands: The cool high fashion maven. While the collection is primarily menswear, the bandoulière, monogrammed leather belts, statement eyewear with gold details, bandanas, and even the signature LV trunk are meant to tap more devotees regardless of style and gender. Besides, if you have something this cool, who sets the rules? Randz Manucom
