PREFACE

I have always believed that architecture is more than just buildings. I believe though at its roots, architecture exists as a structure for physical environment, it is also a magnifier for social factors, a voice for a type of culture, and an apparatus for issues that we are facing together. The portfolio contents both my academic work and art piece, is a showcase of my understanding and investigation about architecture.

01 THE “MELTING ” A ND T H E “UNM ELTED ” Sydney public performance and exhibition space (Academic Studio Design -Individual Project) Time: September, 2021 Instructor: Emma Justine Anderson

By examining the meaning of floating theatre, where the roles of people and art are tied closely through the acts of viewing and moving, I have reframed the conception of spatial experience for performances. Establishing a dynamic entity which the architectural structure and contents metaphorically depicts the Sydney Coastal cultural identity through three principles: space, nature and technology. These accompany visitors on an emotional, tactile and visual journey, combining aesthetic and functional codes with those of innovation and sustainability. And my proposal reimagines the ruined cities and embodies the idea of dying architecture in the collective imagination. The design is trying to present a metaphorical image showing the vanishing of the coastal city and melting icebergs by combining the solidity of an architectural mass and voids of mesh structure. It is like a body in suspension that levitates between consciousness and unconsciousness, between the material and immaterial world. The dedicated structure demonstrates its monumental characteristics as melting, destroying, and fading. Moreover, the building provides a solution to digest greenhouse gases and a warning statement for the in-danger coastal city, it is actually fighting against destruction by digesting the greenhouse gases. Therefore, it is unmelted. The resulting design provides an internal coherence that is striking with different performing arts, resonating with the generous public space, and create a dialogue between the site and the city.

The floating theatre is one of Sydney's new cultural landmarks as Sydney strives to develop itself as a global maritime center. ”The melting and unmelted“ located at Mrs. Macquaries Point allows people to travel through the Royal Botanic Garden and CBD. The site (Coastal line) is already registering significant human disturbances to ocean ecology-extensive fish farming, power stations, factories are the embodiment of our environmental vulnerability and urgency of the crisis. The project is designed as a public space conceived for exhibitions and performances, on the western edge of the Sydney domain, as a dividing line between dense urban environment and the landscapes. It is overlooking the Sydney opera house and Harbour bridge.

CONCEPT -THE POETRY OF ABSENCE In this space, the poetry of absence reminiscent people of the melting icebergs and the loss of nature. The design is intended to raise awareness to the issues of global warming and marine environmental protection, while Icebergs bring a surprising and refreshing image to this hustle-bustle subtropical metropolis.

ABSENT MATTER

COLLAGE

MATTER

ABSENT MATTER Transparent architecture is pure structural essence, expressed through the lightness of the material and the use of iceberg archetypes, the base is its opaque imprint. The two elements are complementary and present one as negative of the other.

The diagram at the left depicting the chronological timeline of a building's deterioration and the "melting" image.

CONCEPT -THE POTOTYPE OF THE ARCHITECTURE

The use of wire mesh and the study of transparency delineate the space of Absent Matter, the representation of a mental projection, a filter and form through which to recount the mutual interfusion of the cultural landscape and the physical environment, both natural and built. A direct consequence of work in the field that weaves together transparency and the surrounding environment, the theory lays emphasis on a creative will that triggers an ongoing dialogue with space and history, and projects the sculptural object into a new temporal extension: what has faded away, or never existed, lives again in a time that is not its own. -The city might be drown one day? The language that transparency carries with it has the capacity to weave in space something that is not there; it renders the negation of matter plastic and reveals the result of an absence, and hence the abstraction of reality and its visual identity without references in time.

ORGANIZATION PLAN

THE NARRATIVE PATH OF MONTAGE The way we see human activities and performers is quite similar to how we watch different scene in the movie, this inspires the design of different expierimental space. There are different types of performance hold in various spaces.

MATERIAL TRANSFORMATION The material is transformed by CO2 through carbon-philic resins, which is air-captured, so the building is actually fighting against destruction by digesting the greenhouse gases. Employing such a material allows air capture of carbon dioxide and the resultant production of a solid construction material capable of supporting load. Channeling its properties, we propose a theatre that self-propogates, the required ingredients for material propagation are supplied through the scaffold, while its actual pattern of growth is defined by environmental factors.

galvanized steel wire mesh frame tubes traforms philic-resins from underground dissolved carbon dioxide reacts with the minerals in rock to produce carbonate, which is stable over a long period of time and can be used in construction. Transformed material will be bonded on the frame to form hard enclosed wall. concrete panels made in mold, and additives with marble dust aggregates and natural oxides walls with infill system secondary structure electrical and special mechanical system

Co2 conversion to building materials We use the Earth's natural process of storing CO2, which is called mineral carbonation or weathering. Dissolved carbon dioxide reacts with the minerals in rock to produce carbonate, which is stable over a long time.

it consisting of two elements: an architectural base, which contains all the functions and services, and a transparent structure made of metal mesh, with an iconic and climatic function, which constitutes the shading of the open spaces of the pavilion.

Each interior spaces creates unique experience. The darkness provides disguise and the materiality cohere the spirits of public architecture. Furthurmore, in these undeground spaces, people can have more immersive experiences, the manager can hold any exhibition about marine exvironmental protection, which is a space gives the visitors different narratives based on the way they choose to go through.

02 URBAN OASIS Public swimming pool design (Academic Work - Individual Work) Time: February, 2021 Instructor: Cristina Aranzubia

The URBAN OASIS – a place for exercise, relaxation and entertainment in a club-like atmosphere operating from 5am till Midnight bringing the restorative qualities of water to a dense urban area with a mix of swimming, floating, eating, drinking and relaxation. The design aims to integrate nature into the urban area, expressing the feature of “growing” in the structure. “Round Sky and Square Earth” is a philosophical thought in ancient China, and it is a manifestation of the theory of yin and yang. The sky and the circle symbolize movement; the earth and the square symbolize stillness; the combination of them is the balance of yin and yang, and movement and stillness complement each other. Among them, water is an element that balances yin and yang and stimulates vitality, bringing humanity and nature together. On the other hand, It brings the indigenous Greenland back to the site, raising people’s awareness of environment preservation. The essence of the”urban oasis” is the landscapes. The existing plants are moved to the rooftop so that clusters of vegetation can build a natural screen, releasing stresses. And it provides shading and direct sunlight for people to avoid excessive sun exposure. Imagine you sit in a hot-spring bath in a grove fragrant with leaves and moss.

Located between two subuerbs, Surry Hills and Redfern, the scheme featured as public space but hidden in the busy urban area. The vernacular architectural language is traced from neighbouring entity that brings diversity to the site. Besides, consideration of the local Australian beach culture and lifestyle is embodied in introducing public landscape and outdoor swimming pool.

Natural Self-Purification of Water

CONTEXT The people traveling around the site are mainly residents, passengers on the train and tourists who live in the Harbour Mill Hotel. The Ultimo Center and terrace houses are known as heritages. The site is the only relaxation space the locals can take a breath from.

The benefits of rooftop gardens is they positively affect the Urban Heat Island effect in the city. Bioremediation and Phytoremediation are ecological infrastructures to improve water quality. It also improve visitors' experiences quality by providing oxygen. Accounting for these factors would enhance the thriving of the Environmental potential context in a sustainable urban landscape.

03 REVERSIBLE DESTINY Multifunctional building design (Individual Academic Work - awarded the 1st place of studio course 2020) Time: Febuary, 2020 Instructor: Jason Dibbs

During 2019 - 2020, Australia experienced a national wise bushfire, and millions of people became homeless and have been experiencing depression due to the uncertainties of life. Many people have been burned by the fire. I realized that their mental trauma still needs to be healed even if the body is healed. The site is located at the CBD of Sydney, where crowds of people pass by. The “reversible destiny” is a proposal trying to establish a vital and metabolism architecture for people to look forward to the future. Therefore, the architecture is designed as a para-functional “machine”, combined with recycling and reusing clothes industry and mental therapy center, in order to heal those victims emotionally. At the same time, the funds made by the industry can support the mental health program. Moreover, re-spun and recycled fabrics are not only significant to environmental protection, but also of great social significance to the spiritual reconstruction of fire victims. The mental therapy center focuses on meditation and art therapy, which is participating in the refabrication of the cloth industry. A wide-open space and facade structure with green plants promote emotional health and enhance self-awareness. The organic structure divides the building into rational spaces and it is expressing biological growth. The form represents the cell division and fabric texture, challenging and stimulating the senses of the refugees. They are given the unlimited possibility to discover the change in bodily perception, which would lead to changes in consciousness.

THE SITE AND THE FACT

The site is in the historical area of central Sydney and surrounded by apartment, office building, hotels and many small restaurants and cafes, but there are limited greenery and activities that cheers people up. Urbanization and heritages swallowed all the vatlity and making people even more anxious. Thus it is important to bring a mental health center to urban life.

anger

As the right figures shown, refugees and their clothes are destroyed by the disasters. In fact, their mental health is shattered in the fire as well. Therefore, we need a factory that can rebuild their soul in a therapeutic way of reweaving fabric. Whatsmore, the thread, and fabrics are freely shuttled over the Voronoi structure. The soft texture of the material is a part of art therapy, which embedded into the architecture. Breeze floats gauze, elegant and practical; soft and strong are the words for the streamy sheer. People enjoy the fairyland atmosphere in the building and experience relief.

The shape of voronoi allows reflecting sunlight from a different angle. And people who walk by can be attracted to it. According to the equilibrium of forces at the node in space, the structure has higher stability because all branches have equal proportion and stress.

The building is a fusion of recycling programs and mental support. The visitors can do handcraft with fabrics and some can work as formal members from the industry. Making art pieces stimulates the unconscious conscious and the process itself has healing power. It arouses innermost thoughts and a feeling of being needed by producing.

04 TAWA STREET HOUSE ALTERATION AND ADDITIONS Architectural professional practice (Academic Work - Selected Work) Sydney/Group Project: Research with Tiffany Liu (5%), Complete individually by Keyu Deng (95%) Time: September, 2021 Instructor: Robert Chan

This is coursework that requires students to rebuild a townhouse for a family in Sydney. The renovation of the existing house is in line with the local council requirements and resident’s complaints. The proposal aims to redesign the demolition of rear space of the dwelling to create a more spacious living space for the family, reduce wall from the entrance to the living area for achieving better circulation, ventilation, improve space usage and achieve transitional space resulting from improved permeability. Moreover, one of the dominant targets is incorporating green roofs, with installation of new water harvesting systems and solar panels for sustainability and contributing a better connection with the environment. Inspired by Oscar Wilde, We often only appreciate nature and seldom consider coexistence with it. The concept design of alteration and addition of the house allows a more proximate connection to the environment. In that sense the house is outward looking, able to be tuned to prevailing characteristics. But also the house will be inward looking, to be complex and rich enough for clients to live a fulfilling life within its enclosure. The main concept of bringing nature elements into living space and embed environmental sustainability design into the house, achieving net zero carbon lifestyle.

Restoring Indigenous and Endemic Landscape The Green Roof is covered large areas with native heathland plants, most of which are endemic to the area. The native plant species play an extremely important role in relation to ecological connectivity and create a sanctuary for the native fauna and residents in the area. Reducing some of the out-of-play ground areas, and adding the native landscape will be more sustainable with a reduction in water and fertilizer use in these areas. Ideally, the endemic plants recall the re-imagination of indigenous homeland whilst drawing visitors closer to the local nature.

05 THE ROARING LIGHT INSTALLATION ARTWORK (Selected Individual Work - artwork for exhibition) Time: September, 2020 Instructor: Mimi Tong

The sculpture represents an over-lighting phenomenon and provokes everyone to protect the night sky from light pollution. (Light pollution is the exacerbated presence of artificial light in the night environment caused by obtrusive use of light.) The main material-glass, represents products of rapid industrialisation. The act of breaking expresses an anxiety against it. The sharpness presents a harmful side and advantage side of both the glass and overdeveloped-industrialisation. I have made a deadly atmosphere by damaging the glass, reassembling it and freezing the exploding moment. This spatial arrangement is inspired from Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View by Cornelia Parker. The performance allows the audience to witness the dazzling reflection and to feel the depression. My work aims to demonstrate the specular glare results in misuse of glass and excessive illumination in order to criticize the aesthetic culture of the industrialized West.

A blare of sound, a roar of life, a vast array of human hives, appeal to the astonished senses in equivocal terms.
