ABSTRACT

In the first tutorial class, my most impressive activity is to think as many ideas as possible for a given topic in two minutes. I have learnt from this experience that I should be able to have a brainstorm when people ask me to give ideas. This is also the skill of giving professional suggestions to the client which could be applied in my future career path. In this studio, I realised that it is important to have an innovative mind and to use my creativity at the beginning of my work. On top of creativity, I reckon communication skills and analytical skills are also the requirements for the design process since design is not only about how to create, but also why to create. Appropriate reasons and analysis for the design and how to present my ideas are the most important things to be success in the logic of designing a meaningful piece of architecture. This journal record the design process and the personal reflection of my design of the project. Several skills and creativity is demonstrated in this journal.

Reflection Bases on the programe brief, I have created a schedule of accommodation that shows some special room requirements for different functions of rooms. Bubble diagrams are continuously developed and reflected to discover the relationship between the different types of spaces and they eventually helped my development of floor plans and my program design. Evaluating from the bubble diagrams, I think I need a better use of spaces to enhance the experience of the occupants so as to achieve the feeling of grand and intimate that I want to give to the users of the motel. In order to show the relationships and connections between the rooms, several options of the room arrangements are tesed and selected by drawing bubble diagrams. Below is the lattest development of my spatial arrangements.

ontext analysis

1. FORM The numbers in the map shows the newly developing buildings surrounding the site as the urban environment has been changing consistently. The new buildings are mainly high rise buildings with modern design of faรงade and structures. However, the old buildings are mainly made of bricks. As the old buildings surrounding the site are mainly made of bricks, I would like to create a building which has a stronger contrast between the old buildings and the new building. Also, I would also like to create a form that is consistent to the native urban environment rather than contradicting to the forms of the surrounding buildings.

3. FUNCTION As the buildings in the future will be mainly high-rise residential buildings as shown in the pictures, more restaurants and more buildings for the function of public amenities will be built. Therefore, I have shown the restaurants and garden in the site area. The amount of people walking the streets near the site will increase in the future thus I want to attract the attention of the people by creating more open public area and outdoor green environments to contribute to the public amenities of the urban environment. At first, I used the restaurant as the main attraction but later on, I choose to focus on green spaces as the attraction of both the local residents and tourists.

2. FLOW The traffic flow is mainly from the Batman Street while the pedestrian flow is mainly from the Spencer Street. Thus, I placed the car park entrance at the Batman Street for the convenience of drivers to facilitate circulation flow. Also, I have put the main faรงade facing the Spencer Street to make my design to stands out as a focus point when people are walking or driving along the roads because the views from flagstaff garden or far away will first see its east faรงade.

Studio Fire Journal 2015 Semester 1

4. CLIMATE Since the north facing faรงade can receive the most sunlight, I have placed the area for largescale activities on the north while the core is placed at the center. The lobby of the lift and the outdoor space can receive morning sun and is more suitable for people have exercise in that orientation. The green house on the north-east faรงade can also receive sufficient sunlight for the growth of plants. As daily activities are mostly happening in outdoor or public area, I have placed the bedroom on the south which can receive less sunlight with 3 meters set back from the building on the south to allow fenestration.

concept development

At first my idea came from the stacking ideas of bricks, the stacking volumes was continuously being explored but the idea was not strong enough as it is not being evolved with deliberate consideration of the form. From the model making experience, I have come up with three different ideas, the first one is the chimney idea which is shown in the photo of the model with black color because I want to create a more industrial feel building with heavy metal and black color. The second one is a Bunsen burner idea the building is long and narrow with a green roof on top to mimic the fire of the Bunsen burner. The third one is having three volumes that separate into public, semi-private and private areas with three different colors and materials. Finally, the third idea is continuously refined and evolved. The diagrams below shows the evolution of idea.

Reflecting from the programe use of the three Dispersed Special interest groups, I have designed several special spaces for accommodating the activities for the three special interest groups. However, I would like to focus mainly on the Yoga group beacuse my main focus is the connectioin between the outdoor environment and the indoor environment. For the Yoga association, I have provided a green roof garden for people to enjoy doing different stretching activities and a spacial cicular green house that runs through two volumes. This is next the the exhibition hall which is designed for the arts group for displaying art works or other large-scale activities. The exhibition hall is designed with fleibility when moving the partitions and furniture. The flexibility in removing the partitions for seminar rooms are also workable to fits the activities of the three interest groups.

ATMOSPHERE

Based on the precedents I have found, I would like to create a motel with grand and modern feeling to the occupants while at the same time with the appropriate use of lights by having a double facade with the cladding being a filter of lights. At the same time, I think the feeling of modern can also be combined with the nature environments which makes people feel relax and comfortable. Other than very bright and spacious quality, I has want to create a contrast by having some experience in dark rooms like the seminar rooms and the corridors.

Interim-Crit I presented my ideas of the three volumes including the public, semi-private and private area and the use of different materials to represent the three volumes. Getting feedbacks from the tutor and classmates, I realized that I should explore by studying precedents about the use of materials, Merits: 1. Evocative design ideas 2. With good consideration of site context 3.

Professional layout

4. Good use of materials Improvements: 1. To be cautious about the choice of materials 2. Rendering images can be improved 3. Can include more hand-drawings rather than computer 4. Model should be used for better communication 5. Use of scales should be more cautious

Reflection The floor plans are continuously being refined and evolved to better fit the program brief. I have thought of using a ground floor car park but I have chosen to use basement carpark finally because that will allow better design of the building rather than using a lot of space for the ground floor. Getting feedbacks from both the tutor and students, I have made the following improvements from the interim to my final design: 1. The facade pattern can be changed to other shapes instead of triangle. 2. The name of my design is changed from Tri-angular to the SPOT because my idea is that the facade will be in circular pattern. 3. The floor plans can demondtrate more architectural thinking Merits that I should keep up for this interim: 1. Good to show sections with montage 2. Renderings of the building with surrounding site environments . 3. Interior renderings of the fabulous spaces of the design. 4. Good to show design ideas with simple diagrams with elaboration.

SKIN + ENTRY

Harold Street Residence “The original building on the site was a double-storey 1930s cream-brick apartment building that sat as an island on the site and within its wider context,” said architect Graham Burrows. “Our response attempts to engage with the site’s heritage context through its architectural form and detailing, to explore the public/private nature of the corner site, and to complete the fourth corner of the intersection.” “There is no screening in this section of the house. The clients are very comfortable with the openness,” Materials: •

Reflection: A building can say to the neighborhood in terms of context and color. The first impression of my motel will be grand and modern. I also want to give the last impression of the building that people would like to come again and think that my building is a fabulous design. People can experience light in the main entrance of the building, views in the hotel suits rooms and the difference of materials when moving from the main lobby built with glass to the private area, suits room which is built with more concrete materials. People circulates from the main entry to the internal with vertical and horizontal pattern. The occupants can enjoy the view created by the outdoor garden on the second floor and can see the flagstaff garden with the motel suits facing the west. For my design, I would also apply that the main entrance is punched into another volume to create negative spaces and apply the transition of materials.

The colured pink is columns locations that i have used a 5m x 5m structural grid for the building beacuse I ewant to use more columns as a part of my design to give a spatious feeling to people. The pink colured area is the fire exit and the yellow coloued area is the building services area. Refuge room and fire exits are connected to the laneway directly to allow access.

1. PRECEDENT CASE STUDY

FORMOSA 1140 Architect: LOHA Architexts Location: West Hollywood, California, USA Project year: 2008 Area: 1486 sqm Project type: Apartment The eleven unit apartment project focuses on the central importance of shared open space for the residents and the community. Formosa takes what would be the internalised open space of the courtyard and moves it to the exterior of the building to create a park. The units are orgainsed linearly allowing for the view of park and cross- ventilation for every unit by shifting the common open space to the exterior and pushing the building to one side. External circulation is used as a buffer between public and privare realms and articulated through layers of the perforated metal and smalll opening . The placement of the external faafe peforated red metal panels and the inner skin fenestration creates a choreographed effect and has a unique expression of form and materials. The external skin also helps to keep the west facing units bu acting as a sun-shading device The building includes an urban park which is aacessible to the publicthat contributes to the public open space in the urban context .
