Submission. EGRD3015 Independent Practice 3B: Final Major Project ‘Inspiration from Travel’ Yukina Narita

Beginning Travelling is a big part of my life and it always gives me inspirations when I create something. So I would like to make a clear statement to represent it using my illustration skill.

within a day using the time and money effectively..

Normally when people decided to go somewhere, they will bring a guidebook or some resources that is explaining the local information usefully. Sometimes they even suggest the best plan which is making us to be able to visit around the essential landmarks and places

-Travel without plan and guidebook is more exciting and full of surprises.

But through this project, I would like to make statements of my point of view for the traveling:

-Going on a travel makes your mind full of inspirations, new experiences

Research I researched a few artist in order to know different style of illustrations, and the medium that they use. Also I looked into the design souvenir market in London, and found a few nice goods talking about the action of travelling.

Quotations I found useful quotations about the travel, and I used them to place in the quick illustration of mine, which are drawing my ideas and the meaning of the quotations. “I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” –Robert Louis Stevenson “Life is short and World is wide.” –Simon Raven “The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” –St.Augustine “The use of travelling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things maybe, to see them as they are.” –Samuel Jhonson

“A traveler without observation is a bird without wings.” –Moslih Eddin Saadi “Tourists don’t know where they’ve been, travelers don’t know where they’re going.” –Paul Theroux “Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen.” –Benjamin Disraeli

A page drawing After the meeting with Mike, I decided to draw small sketches about how I felt before and after I came to this country. In a way, the life so far away from my home in Japan can be a long long journey. And this is the biggest experience to know the difference by researching the place before I come to prepare, and experiencing it actually after I come here to study.

I filled up a page in the sketchbook with these small sketches, it was nice to draw each scenes one by one, to know the process of culture observation in my mind.

Before/After drawings Now I drew 4 sets of illustration which is illustrating the contrast between before and after I go on the travel.

Using different letters I tried to use different country’s languages as well for the experiment. Using languages as an asociation with the illustration is always nice, but my subject is about travel, so I used languages not only English. Foreign languages are always looks mysterious and exotic.

Using different letters 2 On the next stage I used photographs that I took during the travel, and write down the foreign letters on each, saying: ‘Life is short and World is wide.’

Drawings using photos To find the good technique to illustrate the idea of ‘vague image will turns to real’, I used photographs to do the collage and write texts onto. And also paste the white pieces of paper on the photo and did the hand-drawing sketch to show the contrast. I think using pencil is working effectively because it is totally opposite from the photographs.

What I will do next Next, I will use my photographs which is taken by toycamera to do the illustration experiment more. Because the style of toycamera is more unique and gives an impression of one’s original work. And use more my line-drawing skills which is using in everydaysketches.

Also I want to go on a short travel for a day, and record my journey with the sketchbooks and illustrations to observe the place I’ve never been.
