Welcome to the 9th Annual Available Light Film Festival Industry Conference! As always, this year’s ALFF Industry Conference aims to develop Yukon Filmmakers’ skills as producers and directors, create new networking opportunities, and inspire creators. We’re excited to welcome more than 40 visiting guests who will gain first-hand knowledge and understanding of Yukon culture, its filmmakers, and the stories and experiences that make this region so unique. We’d also like to extend a special welcome to all the filmmakers and industry personnel from the Northwest Territories who have made the trip to ALFF. This year, the conference features sessions on distribution and marketing, festival strategy, financing and networking. There will be master classes with award-winning film industry talents: director and producer Mila Aung-Thwin and veteran narrative filmmaker Ingrid Veninger. The conference will also feature a keynote address from esteemed broadcaster and curator Jesse Wente and a special presentation about the National Film Board of Canada featuring Government Film Commissioner and NFB/ONF Chairperson, Claude Joli-Coeur. The Yukon is home to some of the most remarkable stories in the world. It’s a place of plentiful talent and passionate storytellers. This year’s festival features the greatest amount of northern content ever presented at the Available Light Film Festival. The northern film scene may be small by comparison to other parts of Canada, but it is strong and vibrant. Yukon filmmakers continue to receive recognition on the national and international stage and we’re pleased to offer them continuing professional development opportunities at ALFF Industry. Enjoy the festival and conference! Vivian Belik ALFF Industry Producer

1 – 4pm | Hot Docs Budgeting for Emerging Filmmakers Workshop VENUE: KDCC ARTIST STUDIO
NOTE: SPACE IS LIMITED!
The budgeting and financial needs of each documentary project are completely dependent on the needs of the subject and style of a particular film. As such, the Budgeting for Emerging Filmmakers Workshop is not step-by-step, but offers an overview of best practices to guide you through your next project. Preparedness and adaptability are the most vital tools when maintaining a budget over the lifecycle of a film, and this workshop was prepared in consultation with some of the most experienced creative and line producers working in documentary production today. In this workshop, emerging filmmakers will learn which bare bone member of a production is necessary to keep track of your financials, the most important line items to budget accurately, shooting with crews abroad versus at home, the expenses that raise flags with financiers, how to budget in partnership with your co-production partners at home and abroad, how and where to allocate your tax credits, and best practices for clearing music and archival rights. We will also review key lines within a sample budget template that is specific to Canadian filmmakers. Exercises include reviewing sample budgets, and one’s own budget, based on learning from the workshop. Please bring your top line budget with you! Ontario singer-songwriter Jim Bryson and Yukon musician Rob Dickson in an intimate concert that also serves as an informal showcase to visiting ALFF Industry delegates. Jim Bryson is from Canada’s small town capital city, Ottawa. His songs are flush with endearing tales culled from the town he calls home. They have been described as “folk songs played with rock instruments” and “rock songs played with folk instruments”, while in truth they consistently lilt and sway between the two. Opening for Jim Bryson is Whitehorse’s Rob Dickson. Rising from the quiet reflection of his debut, Dickson is charged with emotion, and armed with lyrically dense songs referencing elements of folk, post rock and art pop. Accompanying both singers will be Jordy Walker on drums and Micah Smith on bass.

This comes through on each song of Said Little Sparrow.” ~Fervorcoulee Composer, guitarist and improviser Justin Haynes (Toronto) opens and accompanies Kim. Although his own collaborations with artists such as Ryan Driver, Stephen Parkinson, Jean Martin, Nick Fraser and Brodie West, live firmly in the worlds of experimental/improvised music and free jazz, Justin Haynes has also worked with folk artists Kim Barlow, and Oh Susanna; and is a member of songwriter John Southworth’s band The South Seas.

Saturday, Feb 10 10 – 11:30am | Producing/Directing Science Documentaries for CBC VENUE: YUKON ARTS CENTRE STUDIO THEATRE
The Yukon is fertile ground for northern-based science stories. Producer Andrew Gregg discusses how to turn these stories into documentaries for the CBC’s The Nature of Things, Canada’s leading science-based television show. Andrew got his start making documentaries in the 1980s with Northern Native Broadcasting Yukon which spring-boarded him into producing for CBC. As an independent producer he’s traveled the world gathering stories for CBC, CTV, National Geographic, Discovery, History Television and more. In 2017 he released three films: The Tea Explorer (Documentary Channel), Secrets from the Ice (The Nature of Things) and most recently, Skinhead (CBC Docs POV).
Sunday, Feb 11 10am – 12pm | Directing and Acting with Ingrid Veninger VENUE: YUKON ARTS CENTRE STUDIO THEATRE
In her feature film, Porcupine Lake, director Ingrid Veninger skillfully builds a touching relationship between her two lead characters: one who is a formally trained actress (who was recently nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for her role in Porcupine Lake) and the other who has never acted before on-screen. In this workshop Ingrid discusses her process in directing Porcupine Lake and pulls examples from previous narrative films she’s directed. Ingrid’s work delves into the mechanics and mysteries of human intimacy. Her films are cinematic explorations of characters engaged in searches—literal and metaphorical—for themselves and for what binds them to, or drives them away from others. She takes inspiration from Canada’s ‘direct cinema’ documentary legends: Don Owen, Claude Jutra and Allan King. Her earlier films include: He Hated Pigeons, The Animal Project, i am a good person/i am a bad person and Modra. This workshop is meant for both actors and directors.
