WELCOME TO ALFF INDUSTRY Welcome to the Available Light Film Festival 11th annual Industry Conference! This year’s conference features a diverse mix of workshops, masterclasses and panels spread over four days. As always, we aim to develop Yukon filmmaker’s skills as producers and directors, build connections with filmmakers across the country and inspire creators. We’re excited to welcome more than 40 visiting guests who will gain first-hand knowledge and understanding of the Yukon, its filmmakers and the stories and experiences that make this region so unique. This year’s conference features sessions on directing, screenwriting, acting, cinematography and distribution. We’re pleased to be welcoming representatives from Crave, Absolutely Canadian, CBC Creator Network and VUCAVU who will be joining the festival for the first time. Each year, the energy at the Industry Conference grows and we’ve seen exciting partnerships emerge between Yukoners and producers across the country. The Yukon is home to some of the most remarkable stories in the world. It’s a place of plentiful talent and passionate storytellers. The northern film scene may be small by comparison to other parts of Canada, but it punches far above its weight for a territory of only 37,000 people! Yukon filmmakers continue to receive recognition on the national and international stage and we’re pleased to offer continuing professional development opportunities at ALFF Industry. And of course, we couldn’t make this conference happen without the incredible support from the Government of Yukon’s Department of Economic Development. A huge hats off to them for supporting Available Light Film Festival and local creators! Enjoy the festival and conference. Vivian Belik ALFF Industry Programmer

ALFF Opening Film: Red Snow 6PM | YUKON ARTS CENTRE

Dylan, a Gwich’in soldier from the Canadian Arctic, is caught in an ambush in Kandahar, Afghanistan. His capture and interrogation by a Taliban Commander releases a cache of memories connected to the love and death of his Inuit cousin, Asana, and binds him closer to a Pashtun family as they escape across treacherous landscapes and through a blizzard that becomes their key to survival. Filmed on location in Canada’s Northwest Territories and the desert interior region of British Columbia, Red Snow paints the story of a Gwich’in man who must contend with his past in order to find his way to freedom. A story told in three languages – Gwich’in, Inuvialuktun and Pashtun – Red Snow binds two distant cultures together in this fast-paced thriller. Winner of the Best Canadian Feature prize at the Edmonton Film Festival and nominated Best Film at the American Indian Film Festival. Director Marie Clements and actor Asivak Koostachin in attendance. Opening remarks by Yukon and visiting dignitaries. Presented in partnership with Telefilm Canada and Canada Media Fund.

Marie will work with a small group of screenwriters and filmmakers to shape existing or early-stage outlines and give tips on developing a script that clearly tells readers and collaborators the film you want to make. As producer of Edge of the Knife Frantz worked intimately with the Haida community to create a narrative film entirely in Haida, an endangered language with less than 20 fluent speakers. In this informal conversation, Frantz talks about this and his experiences producing One Day in the Life of Noah Piugattuk (ALFF 2020) which is based on a real-life event that happened in director Zach Kunuk’s home community of Kapuivik, NU.
