TERM 4 SHOPHOUSE, 105 AMOY STREET The brief requires various programs inside one shophouse, which brings the challenge of proper planning. There are other aspects that we should also look at, such as the five-feet setback due to regulations.

TERM 4 MEMORIAL Located at Marina Bay East, it is the first landscape project, and the first group project that we get our hands on. Interesting series of experience demonstrated by the film strip. Our concept comes from the Chinese phrase 饮水 思源, which means not forgetting the foundation as the society prospers.

TERM 5 MEDITATION CENTER@ONE NORTH First time of doing a project of such type. I need to focus on what kind of experience the building brings to the users, and also how the building responds to surrounding environment and traffic.

It is also the first time for me to start exploring parametric design. Initially I want to create the lighting and shading effect from the image below

Rhinoceros in this case allows me to play with the surface to create similar effect, at the same time leaving some room for spatial arrangement.

In the next phase of the project, my experiment with parametric forms continues. Eventually, the design is settled in harmony with the context.

TERM 6 HOUSING@PUNGGOL The most challenging project so far as the site is 1.25 hectares in size. With the unique position with the MRT and LRT station in the center, my initial idea is to locate commercial programs in the center while push the residential buildings to the boundary of the site. The layout of the entire project is to direct traffic flow into the center.

TERM 7 OPTION STUDIO ‘CONTESTED TERRITORIES’ Group project with Puja Shome & Sandra Chan The project aims to design a research facility for the Orangutan Heavan located in Sumatra. The research facility should be able to allow tourtists to learn basic knowledge of the orangutans, provide research facilities for researchers and local students and provide accomodation for the staff.

Term 9 Option Studio Reinvigorating and Redensification of a Vertical Urban Shophouse

The project seeks to take the concept of vertical building to relate people to the architecture and also direct them to relate with the surrounding urban environment. Singapore is blessed with enriched urban environment, a vertical building has great potential in such context. As land is scarce In Singapore, space created in a vertical building is precious. The combination of multiple programs in one building extract the maximum value of the building.

Site Condition Site is located at Arab Street, in the middle of rows of shophouses, surrounded by elegant architectural designs, such as Duo towers and the Concourse. Next to the site is Haji Lane, a famous commercial street which is also a tourist attraction. The Sultan Mosque sits near the site. Overall the site is enriched with various urban elements. 1. 6. The Gateway

The overall design concept is to withdraw potential users from surrounding urban environment, elevate the programs using the idea of vertical building, so that while people experience the architecture they can also appreciate the surroundings.

GYM/BAR

To bring out the maximum value of the building, the programs are a result of a hybrid operation mode - bar + gym, where gym operates in day time and bar operates during the night. The combination makes the project economically more feasible, especially when relating to the Covid-19 situation, where places like bars are not generating enough profits for the business owners due to regulations.

Reception/Entry

Programs with similar demands for space could be sharing the same space, makes it more convenient to convert from gym to bar.

Drink counter/ Bar counter

Boxing+martial arts/ Live performance

Equipment+cardio/ Drinking game +open booth

Washroom

Yoga+meditation/ Private booth

Storage

Programs such as boxing, martial arts and live performance all require a ring/stage, and also attention from audience, therefore in program layout they are placed in the center. A central atrium is open up to the top to provide space for visual connections and also introduce more natural light into the vertical building.

In conventional building layout, movement is linear. Gym and bar usually has open floor plan and the movement is more random. Based on this idea the programs are to be distributed in a more vibrant way that can guide flexible circulation.

As most of the shophouses in the region only have three floors maximum, a vertical building up to six floors might seem bulky and intimidating in the context. For facade treatment the building is broken down to smaller fragments and the language is following the unique horizon formed by the rooftops of the shophouses.
