‘House F’ located in a lively downtown alley, surrounded by densely populated residential area in Tainan, a cultural city in southern Taiwan. This site oriented northsouth direction, while the building gets west exposure under tropical afternoon sun as a challenge, it also has a magnificent view of urban greenery and wide open view to the city as an advantage. This building layout represented a stereotypical challenge of traditional single-family residence in Taiwan, on the ground floor functional staircase dominated the core of interior and caused issues on ventilation, lighting and disconnection between spaces.

Concept_ Intertwined layers and partitions During the process of renovation, we redefined concept of a wall. Derived from the idea of separating in and out, we used different materials or shapes as the medium/walls between spaces to create variations of depth and layers in space.

Aperture defined by these medium/walls leads each circulation movement though levels of transparencies, sometimes concrete, glass or sometimes even as an aperture on floor that guides dweller to explore this place with uninterrupted flow. These circulation arrangements not only connected each unique space to another, but also allowed dwellers to associate their environment to emotional state with every turn and view.

Construction

Construction To reduce the overall construction time and the structural weight, we mainly use the steel construction, pour concreate in the floorslab and bathroom. The outer walls are build by metal plate dry wall.

Air Introducing breath of fresh air is one important task. After renovation, circulation of air flow has been significantly improved by reorganizing bath, sundeck and organic shaped rooms. The new layout allows each room to have ventilation windows for natural breeze from horizontal direction; the apertures between floors, also increases vertical aero dynamic and effectively refreshes air flow within the building.

Light Additional two meters of space set a sequential setback from sundeck, staircase and a framing wall at the western facade, this is build to resolve the problem of western exposure under tropical afternoon sun. This generous sundeck not only harvests sun and dries clothes effectively, but also lighten up the bathroom while keeping privacy and reduces humidity. It also made this meridional house to catch light from west side, turning the disadvantage of the western exposure as an advantage to improve lighting condition and microclimate of this building.

A scenery looks like natural phenomenon, when we get closer, we feel the differences consciously. Except the scale and the image of the object (cloud and column), we also feel the relationship of spaces, from general to every individual. We walk through the cloud columns, the columns still have its extensity, but reduce its materiality and the sense of presence. By transmitting and layering, the cloud is sometimes thick, sometimes light, it become a changeable and connected, clear but blurred scenery.

Concept We shifted the static exhibition into a dynamic space that response to the wave of coordinates. By creating a sense of movement into multiple directions, visitors can flow through various scale and space. This space is defined not only by figurative objects, but also the definition given by light , space (environment) and movement (people), the abstract space. It is not purely a concise simplicity, but a coordinate given by all angles that maps different richness of complex landscapes. By experiencing this wave coordinates with Mr. Chen ChengPo’s creation and favorite saying (such as: nature is my classroom; I believe we merely need to ponder upon as long as our mental state of innocence can be.) in the visitors’ mind, we hope to raise the sense of exploration, and extending a new axis into the pursuit of future. Natural light casting atop of the ‘Wave Coordinates’ exhibition shifts the aperture and focus between the illustrated coordinates.

Prototype This installation is the result of composing different L-shaped wooden structure unit, each varied in height ( 210,180,150,120,90,60 cm). From ground up, each layer diminished in size and shift in different direction. On structure design, we studied the layering procedure and space concept with model building. The structure started with five points from the ground, and formed its organic growth upward; the structure came total stability when top layer is completed. Due to the irregularity of the structure, we tried to eliminate structure hinges and points, and reinforced the structure with metal pieces to achieve this fluidity in stability.

Graduation Design- City of Living Book

Location Taichung, Taiwan Year 2010 Design Team Lee Yun-Chen, Chan Hui-Yu Program Urban object design

Taichung was once acclaimed as “City of Culture”. But due to urban development, and the relocated of the central business district, the old Taichung central town is turning into a declining area day by day. What can we do to strike a balance between the new and old central business district? How to reactivate Taichung city and redefine “City of Culture”? We view Taichung city in a new perspective from the past until now in the part of the landscape of culture, path of culture, nodes of culture, and area of culture; we found a brand new area that is between the new and old Taichung business district. This area may connect the new and old town, and reactivate Taichung city as well.

Concept City of Living Book is taking advantage from its characteristics of accessibility, knowledge and culture. Gather these elements into city space and create new sparks. Books not only carries the historical significance of the Taichung culture, but they also convey new message as a media. In our opinion, the area between books and living space should not be limited only to libraries or bookstores. Instead, it should be enlarged to the whole city. Street furniture, city furniture, and all visual opportunities of open space in the city then become the connecting points of City of Living Book.
