This is the industry-academic cooperation with hospital during my third year of university. Because of the collaboration, we do learn a lot apart from the lectures and it is the worthiest project that I have ever done. Here is our process!
National Taipei University of Technology
Taipei Veterans General Hospital Su-Ao & Yuanshan Branch
13
Who needs the urine bag?
Target User Neurogenic Bladder With the different parts of injury, neurogenic bladder patients can be divided into two types:
Spastic Neurogenic Bladder Because the central nervous system or peripheral nervous system upon the sacral vertebrae damage, patients will release the urine unconsciously. The bladder is in the spastic state.
Sacral Vertebrae
Flaccid Neurogenic Bladder Because the central nervous system or peripheral nervous system below the sacral vertebrae damage, making bladder muscle loses the contraction. As a result, the bladder starts to swell and the urine only releases a little when accumulating lots of urine.
14
Interview The first time to visit Taipei Veterans General Hospital and interview the nurses about the catheter usage, urine drainage bag and patients' daily life which makes us understand more deeply about the target users and so does the design definition.
Definition Thank to the previous research and interview afterwards, not only the problem but also the design definition become more clear than before. Because of the exposure of the urine drainage bag, we want to make it hidden in the pants. With this feature, patients are no longer worry about other people's perception and suffering from the self-esteem. Futhermore, wearing the pants with such the function let patients free to move. In addition, we also take the usage of releasing the urine into account to make our design meet the real need.
+ Make urine drainage bag hidden in the pants.
Free to move.
Easy to release the urine.
15
Prototype In this stage, we keep doing prototype for several times in order to find the better solution such as imitating the urine releasing from the bladder and the position of catheter.
Using paper to do the first prototype help us try more in the short time.
16
Test Both my teammembers and our professor have tried the pants; therefore, we got some suggestion to improve our design after duscussion.
Feedback Because most of the urine bag users are the elderly, we asked teammember's grandmother to help us test the feasibility and comfortable or not. It helped us breakthrough the blind spots and the textile choosing afterwards. After this valuable testing and experience, we have changed our design based on the convenience for elder people: 1) much softer textile 2) the type of side zipper 3) use elastic band and clip instead of the rope to tighten the pants
17
Modify After testing for couple of weeks, we confirmed the functions, the appearance and the texitle.
Then, we went to Yongle Market which sells a variety of clothes and texitle to buy the materials we need. After that, we discussed our prototype with the professional tailor and she helped us make the real pants.
18
U-pants You're in pants.
Final Design
U-pants is a trouser for urine drainage bag users. They can place the urine bag inside the pant and hide it entirely. It consists in a sided zipper, facilitates the patient urine bag placement and removing. When releasing the urine from the urine bag there is no need to take out the pants, U-pants has a small pocket so you can pull out the urine bag tube and easily discharge the urine from the urine bag. As well helps the nurse control the amount of urine gained in the day, by peeking a small pocket through a transparent plastic.
19
Design Features

20
Make U-pants better Because patients need to wear U-pants for a long time in a day, choosing the comfortable textile is our priority consideration to prevent two problems happened:
1
2
Preventing the users from suffering the cloth friction with skin.
The bag inside might gets wet after releasing the urine if the users do not keep valve dry.
Therefore, we tried to use the different materials to make U-pants better.
More comfortable texitle We found the company, Singtex, which focused on the development of functional textiles and truely have the materials we need after visiting. One textile enables to have more than two functions such as low friction with skin, breathing and waterproof which is the suitable material for the bag inside.
Seam Sealing Tape Using waterproof textile needs the seam sealing tape or it won't protect pants from getting wet absolutely. We visited the company called Taiwan Hipster that manufactures excellent waterproof materials. After discussion with them, we started to do the prototype with the view to comparing each feasibility.

Waterproof Test Testing which seam sealing tape has the best waterproof with specific textile. After that, we found out the best one which maintain dry for 4 hours!
Prototype multi-function textiles & three types of seam sealing tape
For leisure use U-pants is especially designed for stay-in-hospital patients. In the meanwhile, considering not all users of urine drainage bag stay only in hospital, we also designed it for stay-home users who can easily wear the pants with the urine bag hidden in the pants without people noticing it.
It originates from the same idea of U-pants and the main differences are only in the material and the exterior look of the pants.
The appearance which hides the urine bag valve become concise and the function for observing the amount of urine was removed.

Putting mycelium powder to accelerates its rotting process and deodorant.
During this stage, people can collect the liquid fertilizer from the leftover and use them to wash the plant and clean the pipes after diluting with water.
Second Stage: Solid Fertilizer After 60 days, the leftover will become the soil and it still needs some process to turn to the solid fertilizer.
4 Mixing it with auxiliary material such as coffee grounds and wood chips.
3 Pouring the leftover into the bigger container.
120 days
5 Poking the holes on the cover and stirring them regular.
When the soil become soft, brown or black color with good fragrance, it means that the solid fertilizer is done.

31
Modify In this stage, I learned a lot from the factory and the veterans that shool didn't teach us such as the level of mesh and polish. The veterans were really nice and patient to discuss with me. Fuethermore, they even gave me suggestion and other methods to make my design.
Vive is a compost equipment for residential use. It integrates three features of leftover composting, making whole process much easily and smoother, including the mycelium powder which is needed in process, the liquid and the compost make from leftovers. Through the three design features of Vive: mycelium powder, watering can which stores the liquid from process, and composting bag which collects the leftovers that will make recycling leftover the most organic way to improve the environment.

Technology Analysis the sleeping conditions and help sleep by measuring physiological sensor and sound waves.
NPNS sensor Nanosecond Pulse Near-field Sensing, a low-power radar, detects the user’s heart rate by non-contact sensor. When people fall asleep, the pulse signal from heartbeat will slow down so that the send and return pulse signal time span will follow the changes. Therefore, it can detect the heartbeat and analysis the sleep status further.
1-3 Hz sound waves The researchers used electroencephalogram (EEG) to show that people sleep with 1-3 Hz sounds wave which frequency is same as the brain wave can effectively improve the sleep quality and have the better sleep.

60
How does it work
1
Attract and catch mosquitoes It adopts photocatalyst and the CCFL producing intermittent light to attract mosquitoes which will be sucked in the container by super fan.
2
Scan mosquitoes It'll calculate the number by infrared rays and take the pictures to analyse the mosquitoes.
Technology Photocatalyst Photocatalyst coating (TiO2) would generate -O2 and -OH ions after exposure to light. And then, it would react with organic matter in the air and conduct redox reaction in order toto produce CO2 to attract mosquitoes.
CCFL Ultraviolet Lamp CCFL UV lamp simulates human body temperature to attract mosquitoes while lighting. Then, the inner elements collide with each other to produce ultraviolet light. After hitting the wall of lamps, UV phosphors will converted into visible light.
