Service Design

The local people consider that the refugees place a large burden on society and have no contributions to the country. As a result, the residents take to the street to protest against influx of refugees.

Because of the aging population, some country such as Germany desperately needs to accept more refugees than other countries. It means that they are becoming more and more reliant on workers from abroad.

Let refugees work Many are pointing to the fact that Syrians coming to the West are potential professional workers, desperately needed to sustain Europe’s aging population.

Background Nowadays it is possible to travel to distant parts of the globe in a matter of hours and traveling has been the frequent event in our life. It brings the jet leg problem for travellers, especially a long-haul flight and they end up in a part of the world where time is out of synchronicity. This affects the Circadian Rhythms which regulate our sleep patterns. Also, the cabin seats are not comfortable to rely on. As a result, they have bad sleep quality after arriving the destination.

E-Sleeping, the neck pillow with the built-in technology, solves the fatigue from jet lag in the long flight. Helping users have better sleep on the plane by 1-3 Hz sound waves. Moreover, it will analysis the sleeping conditions by measuring physiological sensor and then provides the sleeping suggestions when arriving the destination. As a result, users can have a wonderful journey there!

Technology Analysis the sleeping conditions and help sleep by measuring physiological sensor and sound waves.

NPNS sensor Nanosecond Pulse Near-field Sensing, a low-power radar, detects the user’s heart rate by non-contact sensor. When people fall asleep, the pulse signal from heartbeat will slow down so that the send and return pulse signal time span will follow the changes. Therefore, it can detect the heartbeat and analysis the sleep status further.

1-3 Hz sound waves The researchers used electroencephalogram (EEG) to show that people sleep with 1-3 Hz sounds wave which frequency is same as the brain wave can effectively improve the sleep quality and have the better sleep.

Mosquito Warning is a public warning device to prevent Dengue Fever and placed in the area where is easy to breed mosquitoes. It will calculate the number of mosquitoes and take photos of mosquitoes. Finally, they will send information to the public health bureau. The Government will clean the risk areas and change the color of light to warn residents not to stay here.

43

44

How does it work

1

Attract and catch mosquitoes It adopts photocatalyst and the CCFL producing intermittent light to attract mosquitoes which will be sucked in the container by super fan.

2

Scan mosquitoes It'll calculate the number by infrared rays and take the pictures to analyse the mosquitoes.

Technology Photocatalyst Photocatalyst coating (TiO2) would generate -O2 and -OH ions after exposure to light. And then, it would react with organic matter in the air and conduct redox reaction in order toto produce CO2 to attract mosquitoes.

CCFL Ultraviolet Lamp CCFL UV lamp simulates human body temperature to attract mosquitoes while lighting. Then, the inner elements collide with each other to produce ultraviolet light. After hitting the wall of lamps, UV phosphors will converted into visible light.

Problem

1 The urine drainage bag tends to be hanging around and exposed outside which affects the patients' mobility and others' perception.

2 The exposure of the urine drainage bag makes it to be moving around and pulled easily which could hurt the urethra.

Product Design

Research

1

The target users With the different parts of injury, neurogenic bladder patients need to carry the urine bag.

2

The reason for carring the urine bag It can be divided into 2 types due to the damage of the central nervous system or peripheral nervous system upon/ below the sacral vertebrae.

Spastic Neurogenic Bladder Patients will release the urine unconsciously. The bladder is in the spastic state.

Sacral Vertebrae

Flaccid Neurogenic Bladder The bladder muscle loses the contraction that make the bladder starts to swell and the urine only releases a little when accumulating lots of urine.

55

56

Interview To visit Taipei Veterans General Hospital and interview the nurses about the catheter usage, urine drainage bag and patients' daily life which makes us understand more deeply about the target users and so does the design definition.

Definition

+ Make urine drainage bag hidden in the pants.

Free to move.

Easy to release the urine.

Because of the exposure of the urine drainage bag, we want to make it hidden in the pants. With this feature, patients are no longer worry about other people's perception and suffering from the self-esteem. Futhermore, wearing the pants with such the function let patients free to move. In addition, we also take the usage of releasing the urine into account to make our design meet the real need.

Product Design

Prototype In this stage, we keep doing prototype for several times in order to find the better solution such as imitating the urine releasing from the bladder and the position of catheter.

57

58

Feedback Testing the function of prototype helped us breakthrough the blind spots and the textile choosing afterwards. Also, we have changed our design based on the result of testing from the target user and the nurse:

1

much softer textile

2

the type of side zipper

3 use elastic band and clip instead of the rope to tighten the pants

Product Design

Modify After testing for couple of weeks, we confirmed the functions, the appearance and the texitle. Then, we went to Yongle Market which sells a variety of clothes and texitle to buy the materials we need. After that, we discussed our prototype with the professional tailor and she helped us make the pants.

59

60

U-pants You're in pants.

Make urine drainage bag hidden in the pants.

Free to move.

Easy to release the urine.

U-pants is a trouser for urine drainage bag users. They can place the urine bag inside the pant and hide it entirely. It consists in a sided zipper, facilitates the patient urine bag placement and removing. When releasing the urine from the urine bag there is no need to take out the pants, U-pants has a small pocket so you can pull out the urine bag tube and easily discharge the urine from the urine bag. As well helps the nurse control the amount of urine gained in the day, by peeking a small pocket through a transparent plastic.

64

For leisure use U-pants is especially designed for stay-in-hospital patients. In the meanwhile, considering not all users of urine drainage bag stay only in hospital, we also designed it for stay-home users who can easily wear the pants with the urine bag hidden in the pants without people noticing it.

It originates from the same idea of U-pants and the main differences are only in the material and the exterior look of the pants.

Product Design

The appearance which hides the urine bag valve become concise and the function for observing the amount of urine was removed.
