MIT INFINITE CORRIDOR

Water collecting system

Boston, MA Graduate Design Studio l UPenn Professor: Marion Weiss l Manfredi Structural plug-In system l

The recent territorial merging of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the city of Cambridge has crystalized the potential of an ideal incubator for academic research and entrepreneurial productivity. MIT, unlike many urban institutions, has embraced the notion of a more porous delineation between campus and city. This outlook has stimulated the creation of a new special use district at the east edge of campus and south edge of Cambridge, designated as a new high density live/work research district that is simultaneously urban and academic. This MIT special district occupies a finite footprint but has unparalleled views of the city and river, bounded by the core campus to the west, Main Street to the north, the Sloan School of Management to the east and the Charles River to the south. Currently a collection of surface parking lots, this recently rezoned area has the potential to become a city within the city, a campus within the campus, and an extension of the university itself.

Building system l

A new territory of Innovation MIT and the city of Cambridge are often described as synonyms for innovation. Perhaps the most compelling evidence of the symbiotic relationship between academic research and entrepreneurial enterprise is the presence in Cambridge of nearly every globally recognized technology company as well as countless spin offs and emerging enterprises. This merged territory also includes an equally impressive density of research laboratories pioneering breakthrough discoveries in medicine and now exceeds Silicon Valley in the creation of patents and companies per regional square foot.

Challenging an uneven architecture Challenging new meanings of academic campus design, two different architectural typologies from Ewha Womans University and Archigram PlugIn city are comingled into a new paradigm for MIT’s East Campus. Ewha Womans University designed by Dominique Perrault represents landform building strategy that could bring landscape and ecology design into the campus. The other architectural typology from Archigram Plug-In city by peter cook represents renewable building system to reshape obsolescence in campus.

New Plug-In System for Future City Instead of separating academic and entrepreneur, city and campus, water and land from design, I aim to design a new infinite corridor system not only enhance current campus circulation but also to be resilient for social and cultural shift, and even for catastrophic disasters by nature in future institutional city.

New Infinite Plug-In City On behalf of making synergy between city and campus, academic and entrepreneur, the new design creates flexible indoor space with receptible space frames to accommodate diverse programs which are frequently changed every year. Modules inside the buildings can combine and interact with other modules to meet demands from various programs. Offices don’t tie with floor, and lab can integrate with residential space. New design for MIT East Campus will provide fixable freedom for future students, researchers or start-up entrepreneurs to explore their discovery without limitation by their surroundings.

[NEW INFRA] FUNGI BRICK Graduate Research Studio l UPenn Professor : Reinier de Graaf Laura Baird (OMA/AMO) Fungal technology It could provide better drugs, building materials and even fuel. Fungus can be used to make bread and beer, but few people might imagine it could play a key role in creating safer insecticides, medical implants or green fuel. Most of a mushroom’s power lies beneath the soil in a bundle of filaments called that mycelium that secrete enzymes capable of breaking down soil and rocks. They also produce potent chemicals to defend their territory, and release nutrients into the soil.

Fungi brick Mushrooms are harvested by hand throughout a 16-35 day cycle. So it can be used as renewable material. Mushroombased material like fungi brick can be used to replace a variety of manufactured materials, including plastics, concrete, and engineered wood.

NEW PARADIGM FOR FUTURE

Waste + Pollution Solution

One day, we can grow our building with fungi or We can eat the building

Main concept of new paradigm for the future is developing solutions for Fast growing urbanization through system which combines formal and informal technologies. Building can be not just efficient but essentially Waste free and have developed solutions for Compostable future city. Whole building can be compostable, and whole city can be compostable in natural way. Aiming to ‘zero’ construction demolition waste, toward ‘zero’ problem in Waste + Pollution for future.

Future Building Material

Within 5 days, we can make building

After 7 days, we can get food from building, which is mushroom.

Fungi Brick is 10 times lighter and stronger than concrete. From my research and experiment on Fungi brick, we can make sustainable building material within 5 days, and we can get mushrooms within 12 days. As building material for future, fungi brick has great potential to be renewable material for future city.

BHALSWA LANDFILL SITE New Delhi, India Graduate Research Studio l UPenn Professor : Reinier de Graaf Laura Baird (OMA/AMO) Current problem in trash land In the trash land, only 13.6% of trash can be recycled, and the rest of 86.4% of trash will be remained in the trash land. Only 28% of trash in the world can be recycled, and 60% of trash will go the trash land. In the landfill site, almost 90% will be piled up in the trash land, and make pollution and water resource contamination. Among the total waste, Construction and Demolition waste is more than 30% of global waste. If we reduce Construction and Demolition waste, then we can reduce more than 30% of waste in the world. Landfills are currently leaking toxic materials into lakes, streams, and aquifers. Once groundwater is contaminated, it is extremely expensive and difficult, sometimes even impossible, to clean it up. If we recycled the materials in the trash land, we can reduce the air and water pollution.

YUNSUKIM DESIGNPORTFOLIO ysdstudio@gmail.com l 215.808.5090

Waste + Pollution Bhalswa Landfill Site

Trash = Treasure Turning waste into building blocks for the future city. Currently, waste metals are crushed into cubes, but in the future they could be cut into shapes which could then be used to build structures. So the solution for waste land, we can use trash for the building blocks with fungi technology. Urban air quality is a major concern throughout the world. In developing countries, migration from the countryside to the megacities has brought as a consequence greater emissions into the atmosphere. From my research, earth could be covered by trash around 2100 and we will live on the top of trash. If we do not make a smart solution for trash, megacities will produce more trash than we expect, and most of the megacities in 2025 will face the trash problems seriously in future.

Renewable Plug-In Fungi Structure New buildings and all roads become aged and useless after losing their functions. Somehow we need to use old infrastructures. Instead of demolishing all of old infra, we can replace them through Renewable Plug-In Fungi Structure by demands. If we use trash to build new infrastructure with fungi tech, we can

FUNGI TOWN Bhalswa landfill, New Delhi, India Graduate Research Studio l UPenn Professor : Reinier de Graaf Laura Baird (OMA/AMO)

Today, Bhalswa landfill site is full to the brim, the MCD was supposed to stop dumping any more garbage here in 2005, But due to lack of an alternative site the MCD has continued to dump garbage here. Delhi always had a problem with garbage disposal, with carrying capacity of the city having been exhausted years ago. If we use fungi technology at trash land, the benefits will enhance to make environment better. It will impact to Reduce Slum, Air+Water+Waste Pollution, delay climate change, and create New Infrastructure. Finally, the environment keep getting better from those benefits, then there will be zero waste and pollution, then zero problem in future. The main idea of the trash land development project is to make waste cubes from waste land, and apply the waste cubes to building blocks, and apply the building blocks to old infrastructure and main structure of buildings. If land is already contaminated, instead of using the toxic chemical, use fungi to clean it up and then create new infrastructure with informal technology.

SOLUTION l GARBAGE DUMPING On the way to Delhi via National Highway-1, the Bhalswa dumping site can be seen from as far as 5 km. In the 22 years of its existence, the landfill, which is the size of four international sports stadiums, has become almost 15-storeys high. Within 2km, two main road, Grand Trunk and Outer Ring Rd cross over the site. Bhalswa Lake and nature Park get contaminated as well.

Sky Park Condominium Tower New York, NY Graduate Studio l UPenn Professor : Jonas Coersmeier

The site is located in the New York City High Line, which is a main growth area for new housing towers around the Chelsea district. Actualizing a combinatory logic for ultra luxury and low-income housing models, this project proposes advances a new prototype for mixed urban housing towers along the High Line urban park in New York City. The new condominium tower is designed to be accessible and affordable for both luxury and low income housing units. There are two different levels of street access. One accessing High Line, which is the high level and the other is from 10th Ave, which is the low level. These two public streets merge within the ‘Sky Park Condominium Tower’ as infrastructure that creates an unexpected moment

Challenging the traditional notion of the condominium, the primary goal of this project is to create unexpected and unforeseen experience within the tower, which is derived from the concepts of bifurcation and of continuity of surface. When the ultra-luxury and low-income housing units are entwined, Sky Park Condominium Tower progresses vertically to share views of the cityscape, river and light between classes. In this tower, residents can enjoy the views and socialize together in activity spaces with green parks situated between floors.

POST-SCIENTIFIC MUSEUM OF GEOLOGY New York, NY Graduate Studio l UPenn Professor : Ferda Kolatan A Post-Scientific Museum of Geology will represent nature as how we generally perceive it and will suggest different ways of observing that relationships between nature and the material world. This museum will present a new way that realism could be formulated by challenging the existing and conventional way of thinking in designing museums. Mission The museum will provide unforeseen and extraordinary experiences by revising the traditional role of current museums. To immerse an audience in the natural beauty of ambiguity, speculative realities would be turned into perceivable realities in unique way of geological formulation in design. The otherworldly affects of the museum will drive the formal language within the unforeseen experience of the spectacular sublime. In this museum, the audience will perceive the ambiguity of natural realism, producing obscure moments that blur the boundaries of what is viewed and what is not being viewed.

Instead of capturing “reality just through conceptual reductions, the formal language of minerals creates the characteristics of the museum. The characteristic of the museum consist of three different parts: Roof, Structure, and Body. HEALTH-i-CITY WATERFRONT CENTER Boston, MA Graduate Design Studio l UPenn Professor: Claire Fellman Situated on a post-industrial lot on the Schyulkill River, in the vicinity of an active petrochemical refinery and adjacent to multiple and varied residential neighborhoods, the site provides a rich ground to explore the complex intersections between urban systems, ecology, and health. In a dynamic environment, with rapid population growth and relocation, a shifting climate, and an economic system that produces constant change, interventions must engage the fluid edge of these transformations. The site uses the space as a beer market, a parking lot, and temporary office for a children’s hospital. The site is undergoing a transformation from an industrial, residential and transformational junction into the city’s cultural and social health center. While adhering to practical needs of public accessibility, safety and programmatic demands, the site has potential to be the transition from land to water as an environmentally friendly.

YUNSUKIM DESIGNPORTFOLIO ysdstudio@gmail.com l 215.808.5090

Building Formation By the view of Schyulkill River and the relationship between water and the land, the site is transformed to act as an icon of the new possibilities of the leisure and water culture in the heart of the Philadelphia in providing high qualities of sustainable urban life.

Physical Models

The design process of this project investigates the tension between formal strategies that attempt to optimize urban systems in terms of usefulness, productivity, and efficiency, and the informal tactics of occupation and appropriation that inevitably alter these systems in often unpredictable ways.

HEALTH- i -CITY

Water is the healing center to this health facility. Rather than just a swimming pool for exercise, the water is a space in which to play, enjoy and socialize, and finally heal mentally and physically. This means that not only should the water be able to accommodate more interactive and playful activities than the focused (and lonesome) swimming back and forth,

YUNSUKIM DESIGNPORTFOLIO ysdstudio@gmail.com l 215.808.5090

but this project should be geared towards providing a generous environment that accommodates more interactive and playful activities than solitary lap swimming. Therefore, this project acts more as a public place to gather and interact together.

From ancient times, old civilizations have treated WATER with the highest respect. When I researched the Mission Bay area in San Francisco, the industry has depended on the port and water. Water was critical for the abalone people, who were native tribe in mission bay, in order to fish and trade. Water is meaningful for the mission bay in San Francisco. Today’s life is also very much dependant on a secure and steady supply of fresh water. WATER is the most important raw material for the 21st Century, even more important than oil.

First of all, the site has a sports atmosphere by AT&T Park. When sports are held, the sound of cheering dominates the atmosphere of the area. It makes the site a more sports-related. Secondly, The Mission Bay area is under construction except the site I chose. There is a temporary parking lot by AT&T Park and nothing special there. From the city redevelopment-planning department, the surrounding area of the site will include a hotel, commercial space and residential space, so I think some kind of Active Park is needed in this area for residents and visitors. Finally, this is a site located in the harbor and near the water sports club.

2nd Floor Plan

Facing to the south, there are lots of water sports clubs for boating, surfing and diving. From that reason, the site has great potential aspect for a water related aqua adventure. Part of the fun and delight of visiting the aqua adventure will be the element of discovery and surprise.
