01 [ VERTICAL COMMUNITY ] A SHARING HOUSE IN AN INTENSIVE RESIDENTIAL AREA | TOKYO, JAPAN

My works are inspired by the collective tactics from various perspective, such as community relationship and urban context, which show the complex and dynamic power emerging from the interaction between elements instead of designing from the whole. Through my architecture study in different projects, I attempt to learn from the rules of the complex system in the existent context and adopt it to my design.

01 [VERTICAL COMMUNITY] A SHARING HOUSE IN AN INTENSIVE RESIDENTIAL AREA

Project Type: Shared House Site: Tokyo, Japan Building Area: 700 ㎥ Date Of Project: Feb. - Apr. 2016 Instructor: Zhang Xinnan (pavilion_artisan@tju.edu.cn) Wang Di (didarch_tju@163.com)

The shared house is located in the high-density residential area of Japan, Tianmen District. Because the government adopt a land management of dividing the land into small pieces, it strengthens the intensive land use pattern and creates a unique urban context in Tokyo. The project site is 9m*12m and has a height limit of 31m. In this design I attempt to apply the small-scale urban context to the vertical dimension. The combination of the vertical structure and the circulation system is used as the basis of framework, and the unified modules that makes full use of the tiny building space according to the furniture scale are attached to the structural system. The changeable and flexible units can be used in different combinations according to different residents. Under the condition of ensuring ventilation and lighting, the private space can be combined according to personal preference. The public space in the building can be arranged according to the preferences of the surrounding residents, so the building can produce rich and responsive neighbor relationships.

Room Of Furnitures

Flexible modules are designed based on the study of human activities with a furniture scale. The study explore various possibilities of the occupation of two size units, the intimate interaction between human occupants and module space.

After figuring out the two sizes of the modules, I try to combine modules to hold various activities of life and working environment. It not only meets the need of individuals but also creates in-between space, providing share space and communication opportunities.

Mobility of Modules

Modules are made in advance and hanged to the core structure on the site.

Public & Private Cluster

Surrounded by sharing space, activities in the public space can be seen by people in their private space, providing the interaction and communication between private and sharing space.

Public spaces on different levels have different hobby themes and are surrounded by different groups of private rooms. People can choose to build private modules on different level and get close to people who share the same interests.

Sharing Space Between Private Modules By adding and moving flexible modules, residence will have different space combinations, which will introduce new personal and spatial relationships.

02 [ STATION PARK ] A MODERN TRAM STATION ADJACENT TO THE ANCIENT CITY WALL

Project Type: Tram Station Complex Site: Rome, Italy Building Area: 7000 ㎥ Date of Project: Oct. - Dec. 2016 Instructor: Sinan Yuan (yuansinan@tju.edu.cn )

Dating back to 2500 years ago, Rome has various remarkable history heritage and relics. These historical components establish the fundamental city impression of Rome and still play an important role in contemporary design of the city. However, the ancient city wall in Rome was a boundary to define the ancient city while in the contemporary society it become an obstacle blocking the connections of different areas and is prevented from the modern life with passive protection of historical relics. This project is located on one of the important node of the city wall, Porta Maggiore, which I attempt to design with the respect of. This project attempts of revive the original function of Porta Maggiore by creating a new tram station underground and transforming the traffic island into a station park. The project offers a new travel experience as visitors will go through the park first when they go in and out of the city by tram.

03 [ MEMORIAL CRATER ] A CULTURE CENTER IN WAR-BOMBED RUINS

Project Type: Design Center Site: Baghdad, Iraq Building Area: 2000 ㎥ Date Of Project: Aug. 2018 Academic Individual Work

The site, as a remnant destroyed by the war, exists in the state of ruins, inviting people to think about history and the future. In stark contrast to the lively atmosphere of the surrounding lively city, the remaining walls seem to define the opposite of the surrounding atmosphere. The project aims to preserve and strengthen the spiritual atmosphere, providing people in the city a place to temporarily be separated from daily life. It is the response to the loss of Baghdad in the war that building a commemorative and spiritual art gallery on the ruins after the explosion and providing people with a commemorative history and a place to examine the heart.

04 [ LIBRARY PLUS ] LIBRARY RENOVATION TO ELIMINATE THE OLD BUILDING ALIENATION

Project Type: Campus Library Site: Tianjin China Building Area: 4000 ㎥ Date of Project: Mar.-May 2016 Instructor: Zhang Xinnan (pavilion_artisan@tju.edu.cn) Wang Di (didarch_tju@163.com)

Campus should be full of vitality, but many old buildings in campus are monotonous and closed because of the limited conditions when they are built. Built in 1975, the space of old library in this project is organized in a mechanistic way and the rooms are separated by solid walls from each other. The study space in the library is also separated from the nature surroundings, where there are many tall trees providing comfortable atmosphere for reading. Thus, a new library attached to the old one is designed to eliminate the alienation of the old library and turn the library into an active cultural place in the campus. The new library adopts the way of creating multiple activities space in the new library and on the multi-level connection of the two library to change isolation into openness. The transition in the project is not only applied between the old library and the new one, it also exits between the library zone and the campus.

Eliminate the Alienation of the Old Library The old library, built in 1975, is organized by simple corridors. The small and mechanistic rooms are separated by walls from each other. The library now does not provide poetic reading spaces nor active group room. It is also isolated from the lively surroundings, where there are some tall trees

Except for the main courtyard space, the undefined outdoor space offers possibilities of people's way of using it. The flexible organization of volumes also invites people's creation of the use of space.

05 [ BOUNDLESS GALLERY ] A GALLERY FOR AN ABSTRACT PAINTER, JACKSON POLLOCK

Project Type: Gallery Site: East Hampton, Long Island Building Area: 2000 ㎥ Date of Project: Jun.-Jul. 2016 Instructor: Zhang Xinnan (pavilion_artisan@tju.edu.cn) Wang Di (didarch_tju@163.com)

When I attempt to use architecture language to translate artwork, I try to focus on the feeling and message that is conveyed from the artwork to the audience. Jackson Pollock is one of the major figures in the abstract expressionist movement. His painting technique of pouring and dripping enables the work reflects the overlap of his various movement over time in one piece. Besides, by defying the convention of painting on an upright surface, he added a new dimension by being able to view and apply paint to his canvases from all directions, which makes his painting seem boundless. With the combination of arc surface, the project attempts to create an architecture which overlaps layers itself and has endless surface to reflect the impressive characteristics in Pollock’s painting.

Volume Within one continue surface, the project attempts to create overlap layers without clear definition among floor, ceiling and wall, which reflects the characteristics of boundlessness of Jackson Pollock's work.

1:50 Detail Section Model The project attempts to utilize the modern material, steel construction to create a continuous surface, which form the wall, roof and floor of the building. To enhance the ambiguity and the feeling of overlapped layers, the project also adopt glass in various part of the building, such as insulation and floor.

Spatial Ambiguity Although the wall is a solid boundary, an interface to define an area, modern material such as glass provides an opportunity of creating an ambiguous boundary, an interface allowing the overlap of the visual image.
