SOLAR STUDY 6

Analysis The weather of Oakland is warm and dry in the summer, and mild and damp in the winter. The wind comes from West in the winter and comes from North in the summer. In the summer, Oakland has a long daytime, so this building has enough sunshine, like the map show. However, in the winter, the daytime is short. According to the solar study, I will apply it in my floor plan because the natural light is more important for some space like restaurant, office, ballroom and banquet room. All of them required natural light.

CONCEPT

Oakland is the largest city in Alameda County in California. This city began developing what is now downtown Oakland by three men in 1851. Until now, Oakland has a history of 166 years. In these years, Oakland is developed from small country to large city. Moreover, During this time, Oakland has also experienced a lot of reform, disaster, and war. Now, however, Oakland is developing better than that time because people who live in Oakland never give up to create a beautiful city and a harmonious social environment.Even though the city experienced some wars, it still has vigor, so that is a positive power of the people. Also, because they continue to adhere to the direction of good development, Oakland has such a good development now. That is the power of perseverance which is a spirit of this city. Therefore, my concept related to the spirit of the Oakland. Power, vigor, and life are keywords of my concept, so powerful and lively will be indicated in my project. Vigor also represents in the public spaces. The main idea will be applied to the shape. In addition, application of the materials and colors can represent the main idea as well.

M & G GAME DESIGN COMPANY

18

CONCEPT

M & G is a unique game design company. The name include my whole idea. “M” represents the mysterious, attractive atmosphere, and “G” represnts the galaxy. It is created by the use of lighting and the galaxy elements shape. The interior design of this company is inspired by the mystery of the galaxy prompting human beings to explore and discover its uniqueness and charm continually. In this process, human beings’ knowledge of science and technology and outer space are constantly increasing. M & G Game Design’s management theory coincide with it. Because the game also has its mysterious charm, like the Milky Way that need human to discover. Therefore, the company hopes that people can explore and entertain themselves while learning about the mystery and fun of game design. The concept will be reinforced through the use of vivid color lighting, like the polar lights and dynamic shape like the star catcher, to create a mystical environment.

Opportunity Has enough Sunshine. Near the main street, so tansportation is convinient. There are many windows on the Nortwest and sourthwest’s wall, so the daylight is enough.

Challenge The northwest side of the building face to the main street, so there will be noisy at that side. The northeast and southeast of the building have the adjacency building, so there are no windows on the two side. There are two entrances face to the main street, but the pedestrian way is too narrow. If I design a main entrance here, it will influnce the peple walk.

REFUGEE CENTER

34

STATEMENT

This project is a new hope refugee center which is located in Little Ethiopia, Los Angeles. Moreover, this project is designed for most people who comes from Somalia. This building icludes a restaurant, the residential area, classrooms and an office suit. Reguges can living and working here, but the restaurant is open to the public. This building has two floors and a courtyard. The totally area is 22,000 square feet. Furthermore, this project is a sustainable design include a water circulation system and the green roof.

35

Rebirth

This project concept is related to the climate and plants of Somalia. Most areas of Somalia have desertification, and extreme lack of water. In this situation, however, we also find some insistent life in here, like the picture shows of a green plant growing from a rock. I hope refugees of Somalia are persistent and brave like the plant grown from the rock. Therefore, I chose the elements like green plants, rocks and raindrops. The raindrops symbolize hope and best wishes. In this project, nature elements are main ideas. For example, stones, plants and water are used to decorate the interior space. Moreover, the color of nature elements are main hue in this project, and they also will be used in materials and furnitures. Through this way, this project will represent a “greenenvironment, and it can makes people who live in here have the new life’s feeling. Furthermore, this project will be a sustainable design.
