01 HUTONG REHABILITATING TRADITIONAL COMMUNITY BASED ON MODERN SOCIETY
INSTRUCTOR: SUNGDUCK LEE TEAMWORK: YUQI SONG | PEIZHOU YUE | WEIJIE LI MEMBER 2017 SPRING IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY SITE: YAOWU HUTONG AND ITS SURROUNDINGS, BEIJING, CHINA A ‘Hutong’ is a unique kind of urban residential fabric in China, especially in the north part. It is constructed by a lot of narrow lanes and residential courtyards. The passage between courtyards is Hutong. Hutong lanes provide shelter from the wind and give a strong sense of privacy. It first appeared in Beijing in Yuan Dynasty, and has more than seven hundred years history.Maps from the Qing dynasty and the Republican Era show that large numbers of important historic buildings, such as temples were once active throughout the hutong areas. Many of these still exist today although many have been converted into housing. Today, in contrast to other highly developed urban area in Beijing, most of Hutong are undeveloped with poor living conditions, similar to slums. We want to change the status of Hutong, make it a more comfortable neighborhood.
THE DISTRIBUTION OF HUTONG IN BEIJING Hutong are now concentrated in downtown of Beijing. Our base is in one of these areas, only 1.5 km from Tiananmen Square, the center of Beijing. The white part shows the existing Hutong distribution. The yellow part is the site.

Hutong first appeared in Beijing in Yuan Dynasty. Bureaucrats and nobles built houses and courtyards in the capital. Hutong formed, but the number was small.
In Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty(1403), Emperor establish the capital in Beijing and made great efforts to build it. The Hutong also developed.
I n Q i n g D y n a s t y, t h e ruler inherited the former system. Due to the unprecedented economic prosperity, the number of Hutong reached its peak.
The Wars and indeed the Culture Revolution, all have a negative effect on Hutong. The original appearance was destroyed.
Now China is trying to move toward modernization society. Where should these historical blocks go?

PEDESTRAIN BICYCLE CAR
The traffic situation inside the lanes was not rated well. More and more residences start to own cars. They wanted to see some form of traffic control. Too much car traffic into the alleys, causing noise and air pollution, danger from accidents, traffic jams and general disturbance of the otherwise serene environment.
Problem One: Traffic can't meet the need

PUBLIC GREEN
Although there are a great variety of trees in the Hutong area, both in the lanes and within the courtyards. The green and public space are still not sufficient for community use. Many materials are occupied public space, need to be cleaned up and get more open space.
Problem Two: The green and public space are still not sufficient for community use
P RE S E RVAT I ON PRESERVATION RESORATION
The Japanese War and Civil War, and indeed the Culture Revolution, all have a negative effect on Beijing’s cultural heritage. Over the past 40 years, especially during the Cultural Revolution, 22.5 kilometer of city wall, 22 turrets towers, and many famous courtyard buildings, were damaged.
Problem Three: Traditions and cultures are vanishing
BUI L DI NG US E RESIDENTIAL COMMERCIAL GREEN SPACE PUBLIC SPACE RESTROOM
There are some retails for local residence, but, there is lack of infrastructure. Improvements of water supply and sanitation facilities are dependent on the area’s overall infrastructure.
Problem Four: The functions of buildings are scarce
NO DE S NODES PROPOSED PUBLIC SPACE
Based on the existing conditions and problems we found, we decide to develop several nodes at certain locations(avoid historic house), to improve living qualities and sense of community.
Problem Five: The structure is too homogeneous

NODE TRANSFORMATION In this project, we want to add more energy to the homogeneous Hutong area, break the limitation of the original walls.
On the basis of not destroying the historical characteristics as far as possible, we integrate the connection of original buildings, add new functions, create community centers include more services for residents.
8
IN THE PROCESS OF REHABILITATION, WE WANT TO KEEP THE ORIGINAL SENSE OF THE HUTONG AS FAR AS POSSIBLE.
STREET RECONSTRUCTION
VARIATIONS IN STRUCTURE In Hutong, there used to be clear seperation between private and public space. Now, road and courtyard are blended together, becoming public/shared space. Courtyard house used to be owned by one family. Courtyard was private space. Now, it is usually owned by several families. Coutyard is shared space. In order to adapt to these changes, we adjust the structure of the Hutong. The expansion of space can provide more choices for activities. We use the overlapping vertical structure to achieve space expansion and add more semi open spaces so that residents could use these public spaces freely.
OPEN MARKET
VARIATIONS IN FUNCTION After solving the structural problems, we began to think more deeply about how to improve the quality of life of the residents. The new functions should be adapted to the needs of the local residents. Through investigation and research, we combine the previous reform projects to enrich the comprehensiveness of the block, such as food market, kindergarten, gym... hope to enhanc the vitality of Hutong regions.

02 CO-GREEN URBAN FARM LAB CHICAGO NORTH BRANCH INDUSTRIAL CORRIDOR
INSTRUCTOR: SUNGDUCK LEE TEAMWORK: YUQI SONG | YOUEUNl LEE | ILARIA MATTIOLI LEADER 2017 SPRING IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY SITE: CHICAGO NORTH BRANCH INDUSTRIAL CORRIDOR The site belongs to an industrial area and is close to the Chicago River. With the relocation of Chicago's industry, a new planning is needed to develop this area. After investigation, we found that there are a large number of people living around the base, but the green space is not sufficient. We want to plan a park that not only can be enjoyed, but also enable residents to participate in the process of natural development. How about grow your own food in Urban? The food is not born on shelves, but on earth.
"Let citizens eat the freshest food"
Through the study on the base and the surrounding areas, it is found that the green area is not enough.

We want to develop the North Branch Chicago River into Urban Farming zones and make the site become an important node.
ŪŪ Build a large food market, direct sales, do not consume freshness
ŪŪ Build a catering street along the coast, cook fresh food at once, eliminate the troubles caused by cooking
ŪŪ Build greenhouses to ensure that the food can grow throughout the year
ŪŪ Construct a square where can provide a more friendly and open space for leisure as well as the outdoor market
ŪŪ Use roof gardens and vertical farming techniques to increase greening area and increase food production
ŪŪ Design slow traffic roads and water bus terminals along the river to let people feel natural beauty in different ways

INSTRUCTOR: XIN HOU TEAMWORK: YUQI SONG | YOUDAN ZHANG LEADER 2017 SPRING TIANJIN UNIVERSITY SITE: YUANSHAN, XISHAN ISLAND, SUZHOU, JIANGSU, CHINA In China, settlements vary widely. There are many contradictions between history and modern times, Taihu Lake is one of the biggest inland lakes in China and our site is on an island of it. The island is called Xishan, which originally developed by Taihu Stone industry since Song Dynasty(960—1279). The oldest town has now nearly a thousand years of history. Now, the reserves on the island have dried up and the ancient villages have began to decline. We hope that through the planning we can rejuvenat the local villages and avoid the disappearance of the ancient villages.
