He traveled to the United State and Mexico in 1949. In America, he visited Frank Lloyd Wright’s home Taliesin West in the Arizona desert and met Charles and Ray Eames. (wiki)And during his trip to Mexico, he was enlightened by the “platform” from the study to the Mayan pyramids. For Utzon, the power of the Mayan temple complexes resided not so much in the articulation of the buildings themselves as in their ability to transform the experience of the landscape. The platform literally elevated everything up above the dense forest and made the Mayan more close to the sky and God.

The geometry was developed through a grid and defined courtyard space by use of a module. This module was essential due to the limited number of materials and adheres to an industrial context. Characterizing the structure and appearance of the church the module is a clear 2.20m by 2.20m square, which is repeated ten times widthways and thirty-six times lengthways.

Utzon captured his inspiration for the church from the vast sandy beach on one of the Hawaiian islands Oahu. He said: It’s a natural space that gives a profound spiritual peace, and spiritual peace is just what it is. So he turned the nature that carrying the spiritual peace into the body of the church.
